Overpass is a digital typeface, derived from Highway Gothic, but instead with a focus on usage as a webfont on digital screens for user interfaces and websites. It was designed by Delve Withrington with Dave Bailey and Thomas Jockin between 2011–2015.[3] Overpass has 9 font weights and obliques for each weight (making 18 variants).
It was commissioned by Red Hat as a freely usable replacement for the commercial typeface Interstate. Interstate was Red Hat's corporate typeface at the time and the cost of licensing the commercial font was a motivator to commission Overpass. [4][5][6][7]
Overpass was originally released with just four weights, but more weights were added in 2016.[8] In 2021, the font was rebuilt and improved by Aaron Bell and Michael Luton with more font weights and Cyrillic characters: [9]
There is also a monospaced font called Overpass Mono that has 5 weights.
