Pronephrium is a genus of ferns in the family Thelypteridaceae in the family Thelypteridaceae, subfamily Thelypteridoideae, in the Pteridophyte Phylogeny Group classification of 2016 (PPG I).[1] Other sources sink Pronephrium into a very broadly defined genus Thelypteris.[3] Some species were split off into the genera Abacopteris, Grypothrix and Menisciopsis in 2021 as a result of a phylogenetic study of the family Thelypteridaceae.[4][5]

The genus was first described in 1851 by Carl Borivoj Presl.[6][7]
