St. Mary's County - REAL PEOPLE - Kevin Thompson THOMPSON >> I started out with my dad, and I worked on the river first, crabbing and crab pots, we did like 500 pots every morning, we'd start at 3 or 4 in the morning, be done by 9 or 10. And then my dad had a market in Mechanicsville, a fresh fish market we sold crabs, shrimp, all different sizes, crab meat, and I worked there for 27 years. Of course when we got finished Friday with crabbing we went to my grandmothers house and whatever our catch was that day, she cooked it. That was the best part of the trip. This is where we did all our shopping, there was a Ben Franklin, there was a pharmacy, a grocery store. This is where everyone came on Saturday, even the movie theater, growing up this is where I went to the movies, right here in Leonardtown. When you went somewhere on a Saturday, it was a big day to go to Leonardtown. My dream was always to open up a sit down restaurant instead of the market. And I believe the building is about 83, and I aw no this is a fish market, this is what it has to look like, it has to have that shabby look to it. Fresh fish everyday, rockfish, perch, of course crabs just started, they started April 1st. Soft crabs starting about 3, 3-4 more weeks. Soft shell crabs we fry them, we sauté them, we stuff them. Our crabs have a nice yellow mustard, sweet, where'er your crabs that aren't local have a green mustard inside the fat, and they just don't have that good sweet flavor like ours do. I get all mine local, if it's not local, I don't buy them. I'll sit down and show you how to pick'em. Make my special dip with vinegar, and crab season, chopped onion. Sit down and show you how to do 3 or 4, and of course if the conversations good, I'll pick ‘em for you [laughs]. Here's it's where all the locals come. You get that home feeling here, a lot of home cooked food. If someone wants an extra sauce, someone needs an extra piece of fish, whatever the case is you make the customer happy. Everyone's really down to earth, good eatin', just good people. Unbelievable [picks up cake] As you see [eats a bite of cake] and they're all made from scratch. Just make sure you eat at Kevin's Corner Kafe in Leonardtown, number one seafood place in Leonardtown. And the only one! but it is hidden. [laughs] You'll find it. Just ask someone on the street side, they'll get you here. [music]
