Hello, and welcome back to TOPSweb. In this video we are going to review Project Designer module. Project Designer is a fantastic way to add tasks to your dotProject project. It is an add-on module that came out with dotProject version 2.1 It has been around for a long time, but since the release of 2.1 it became part of the standard install By default it's not turned on and so you have to go into system admin go to view modules click the install and right away you will see that it's disabled you can remove it or configure it and you can see that the menu items is hidden So we will enable it and then unhide it and quickly I'll show you the configurations screen, not much to configure. The configuration is only the description length You can show the full project description or only a set amount of charachters during the mouseover. then click Save We'll have to return back to the system admin I'm going to move the module up to change the order of your menu items by clicking on the arrows here. and I'm going to move project designer next to projects. OK so let's go there and take a look Right away, you can select from any of your active projects and here you can see the very familiar project view, except for as you go down you can see that you have a new menu for actions so just give you a quick overview this is your summary of your project, this is your gantt chart going down a little further you have a list of tasks that currently exist and then the actions that you can take upon those tasks and the ability to add tasks Let's start with adding a few tasks What is great, is that if I know I am going to add 3 tasks, I can right away click the add icon to add 3 place holders. Type: Add patches to server 3 Type: Add patches to server 3. Type Move ecommerce site to #3 Type: acceptance testing Before we hit the add button, we'll set the dates. we'll set the 3 tasks to August 16th except for the last one which we will make for the following day. Click the Add button and you can see within our project I should have set those to August 17th because now they show they are behind schedule. and ..it's after midnight now... so all we can do right away is to run an edit as an example we can do the right now we can go ahead and push these out for one day. click the update button And that's the date move - how many days. And as you can see everything has pushed out for one single day. We can perform these actions on any of the tasks even more than one and the time and make changes If you choose 3 tasks and set an action to move one day, it moves all 3 tasks one day simultaneously. So make sure you are careful in selecting multiple items because it affects them all. The best part about being able to make multiple selections is that you can make status or progress updates. You can move to another project As you recall without using project designer, adding a dependency to a task was very tedious to do in the normal view here acceptance testing should be a dependency of moving the e-commerce site so Task depends on the completion of moving the ecommerce site to server three and then click update Since we are only dealing with a time scale of hours here, (instead of days) not sure if this is the best example. as you can see there is an arrow right here.. and so it did build the dependency. and... now we have a bad finish date. so we can the select the end date only and change it to the 18th. and update there we go.. So there are an number of things you can do set the start and end date, the duration, change the duration of something, The acceptance testing task will take us four hours. and we can set the owner the type assign users and unassign users so if ther is somebody you want to take off of the list of who is performing work that's pretty handy as a normal priority set the progress I've showed you dependency already and you can move the tasks to another project and here under other is most importantly where you go to delete tasks which is typically all I use out of this list. But you can make tasks inactive, change them to milestones, change the task type, but if you need to remove a bunch of tasks at once, this is very useful. and I've already showed you the date move which is a very useful tool and click update when you are done. so you can see project designer is a very very very useful tool and it also has a great view too quickly see the the project and to make fast changes. I think it is an absolute must install on the dotProject install on web2project which a fork off of dotProject, that comes standard and this is already installed so that concludes this video for project designer Best of luck with your project! Thank you.

History

web2project started as a fork of dotProject in late 2007.[3]

Since the entire original team membership consisted of former dotProject contributors, the design and development decisions were quite similar to dotProject itself. As time went on, the systems diverged though web2project has maintained a "converter" which allows dotProject users to perform a one-way conversion to web2project. At present, the web2project community suffers from fewer add-on modules and a smaller community in general.

As of July 2010, web2project is available via RPM install for Mandriva Linux.[4]

Support and Community

The primary means of day to day support is provided free by volunteers in both the forums and via online documentation.
