En la antigüedad, se llamaba períbolo a cierto cercado de árboles y viñas que había alrededor de los templos y estaba en la antigüedad pagana consagrado a los Dioses del Lugar.
Las frutas pertenecían a los sacerdotes. Entre los cristianos, se componía el períbolo de pórticos y celdas, pequeños jardines o huertos y baños y todo el períbolo se juzgó en tiempo de Teodosio y Valentiniano, asilo inviolable de los malhechores que se refugiaban en él.
