BackgroundThe correlation between Zinc concentration in the prostate's peripheral zone to the onset or presence of malignant process needs to be evaluated in detail.MethodsZinc concentration was measured in ∼1–4 mm3 segments of fresh needle‐biopsy cores, with X‐ray fluorescence, and correlated with the histological findings of these tissue segments.ResultsLocal Zinc concentration is correlated with the presence of cancer (PCa); the higher the Gleason score the greater the Local Zinc depletion. The Zinc value averaged over the entire extracted tissue is specific only to Gleason score 8–9 PCa. The results refer to patients avoiding Zinc‐rich supplements since those show elevated prostatic Zinc concentration in identified cancer tissue. Prostate Cancer (PCa) is one of the most common malignancies in men worldwide, with 1.4 million diagnoses and 310,000 deaths in 2020. Currently, there is an intense debate regarding the serum prostatic specific antigen (PSA) test as a diagnostic tool in PCa due to the lack of specificity and high prevalence of over-diagnosis and over-treatments. One of the most consistent characteristics of PCa is the marked decrease in zinc; hence the lost ability to accumulate and secrete zinc represents a potential parameter for early detection of the disease. Background: Prostate cancer is the most common visceral cancer in males, ranking as the second most common cause of cancer-related deaths in men older than 50 years of age, after carcinoma of the lung. It is predominantly a disease of older males, with a peak incidence between the ages of 65 and 75 years. This study aimed to estimate the plasma zinc level and plasma prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level in patients suffer from prostate cancer. Materials and Methods: A case–control study was conducted in Khartoum on 100 males aged more than 50 years old which were divided into 50 apparently healthy as control and 50 with prostate cancer as case. A 5 ml of blood specimens was collected in lithium heparin anticoagulants for the estimation of plasma zinc level using Buck model 210 VGP Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (East Norwalk, CT 06855) made in the USA and the plasma total PSA that was measured by immunoassay Sandwich principle HITACHI ROCHE COBAS E 411 (serial number 04641655190 V 13.0). Results: The mean level of plasma zinc was 0.35 mg/L ± standard deviation [SD] 0.14 in case and in control was 0.68mg/L ± SD 0.13, so the P value was 0.002 and PSA was 43.08 ng/ml ± SD 20.08 in case and 3.53 ng/ml ± SD 3.90 in control, so the P value was 0.000, the correlation between the level of plasma PSA with plasma zinc in patients with prostate cancer give R was 0.01 and R2 was 0.001. Conclusion: This study concluded that PSA is significantly increased in patients with prostate cancer and plasma zinc level is significantly decreased in patients with prostate cancer. However, it is statistically significant.

Serum Zinc, Total & Free PSA, Free/Total PSA Ratio and Prostate Cancer Association: A Case Control Study2013 •
This case case control study was undertaken to see if there is any association of serum Zinc level with histologically diagnosed prostatic cancer patients. Also to re-establish the importance of estimation of serum Prostate specific antigen PSA, (Total, Free and ratio between free and total) in prostate cancer patients. It was evident from the present study that serum Zinc level has got statistically significant difference between control and prostate cancer patients (p<0.000),. Total PSA and ratio of free and total PSA was also significantly different between control and prostatic cancer patients (p<0.04 and 0.006 respectively). However no significant difference was observed in free PSA level between this two groups (p<0.282).It was concluded from the present study that serum Zinc level could be an adjuvant laboratory test in the diagnosis of prostate cancer and can be started as a routine test in case of suspected prostatic cancer.
