Государство, религия, церковь в России и за рубежом
Сенюткина О., Гусева Ю. Дискурс о российских мусульманах в материалах Особых совещаний 1905–1914 гг. [Discourse about the Russian Muslims in the Materials of the Special Meetings of 1905–1914”] // Государство, религия, церковь в России и за рубежом. 2018. №4. С. 231–254. (In Russian)2018 •
This article provides a short overview of the so called five “Special meetings” organized by various imperial ministries on the issues of faith tolerance and above all on the situation of Muslims in Russia, from 1905 to 1914. For each of these meetings, the authors give the names of the major protagonists within the imperial elite: officials, Church leaders, Orientalists/ethnographers, and then a short sketch of topics discussed. The conclusion is that over these ten years, the discourse became tougher, and switched from the discussion of religious freedom and Muslim education, to a direct search of the ways of containing the growing Muslim political intelligentsia. This trend culminated in an anti-Jadid policies and the turn towards “traditionalism” (keeping the Russian language and secular subjects out of the maktabs and madrasas; stopping the influx of foreign Islamic preachers, etc.).

He was one of the first Russian researchers, who described the syncretic religious beliefs and customs of the Ingrians Finnish ethnic subdivisions (Yevremeyans and Savakotes), as well as the Finno-Ugric peoples of Izhora and Vod. From the beginning of the 1920s Y.Lensu was actively working at the summer expeditions of the Commission for the Study of the Tribal Composition of the Population of the Borderlands of Russia (KIPS). Later he was working at the Institute for Studies of the Peoples of the USSR (IPIN), in which culture and the life of the USSR peoples were studying. The religious life map of USSR was also compiling there. Yakov Lensu was regularly participating the section of the study of religious beliefs of the peoples of the USSR, led by Nikolai Matorin. The section was functioning in the Museum of the History of Religion of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR for many years until N.Matorin was arrested. Y.Lensu was also engaged in different linguistic research. He was studying Izhora and Vod peoples’ dialects. In the appendix of this article the part of the manuscript of Y.Lensu’s research work “About Finnish people beliefs at the Leningrad’s environ” is published. Lensu described various mythological characters like a demons of natural loci and demons-assistants in this text. Among the demons-assistants an important place was occupied by Para: threelegged demonic creature, which helped housewives to increase milk quantity of cows. It was important because milk production was traditional for the Finnish people of Ingri. Texts of conspiracies from bleeding and from snake bites are also included in the manuscript.

The article explores a field quite new for Russian religious studies: research into the infosphere of religious institutions. In our case, the term “infosphere” defines a totality of institutions and informational resources of various origin, as well as channels of research communications, including verbal communication, those providing the development of this infosphere. At that, we rely on works by one of the creators of contemporary philosophy of information Luciano Floridi, who built that neologism according to the pattern of the term “biosphere” and put it in the research circulation in the mid 1990s, in the context of studying the new informational reality. In this work, we consider a small segment of the research of infosphere: studying the infosphere of the Orthodox theological schools of the Russian Empire of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. We analyze the main methodological approaches to studying the noosphere of seminaries and theological academies, the historiography, and the sources of that topic. The scale of the tasks requires the involvement of a wide range of sources. There are various written materials, both printed matters and manuscripts. There are catalogues of libraries collected in seminaries and theological academies, lists of personal libraries of teachers of theological educational institutions. Another valuable source of data on the infosphere of theological schools is a variety of notes and plans of lectures, journals of meetings of councils and conferences organized in theological academies, correspondence, and memoirs. Analysis of the content of periodicals makes it possible to reconstruct the informational field of teachers and students of theological educational institutions of the Russian Empire. It allows us to make a complex research of the circle of reading of representatives of the clergy, which played a significant role in the Russian culture of the pre-Soviet period.

The article offers an analysis of ethical concepts in Russian religious-didactic literature of the 17th century. The main sources are alphabets published in Moscow. There were two alphabets printed by Vasily Burtsov, and an alphabet by Karion Istomin, as well as “Azbuka s oratsiey” (Alphabet with Didactics), and the manuscript “Alfavititsy didaskala” (Small Alphabet of a Teacher). These alphabets can be considered as religious-didactic literature because in addition to grammar, these manuals included the narration “On the Letters” by Chernorizets Hrabar (Hrabar, the Black Robe Wearer), extensive religious-anthropological reasoning, prayers, the Credo, Decalogue (in the Alphabet by Karion Istomin only), the Beatitudes, and other texts which were presented in Catholic catechisms of that time, as well as in the “Profession of Faith” by Peter Mogila (he used the Catholic catechism in his “Profession”). The influence of Reformation ideas is obvious, too. Several works by Karion Istomin, the alphabet primarily, were written and illustrated under the influence of “Orbis sensualium pictus” by John Amos Comenius, the last bishop of the Unity of Brethen (Bohemian or Moravian Church). The content of these manuals (including visual content) allows us to conclude that their mass publication was induced by the disciplinary revolution that began after the end of the Smuta (the Time of Troubles) in Russia, which is associated with the House of the Romanovs coming to power. The creation of a new tsardom was impossible without new people whose education was based on religious ideas and regulations. Ethical concepts in these books were almost inseparable from religious regulations, which is explained by the doctrinal aims of primary education in Russia of the 17th century.
