This paper investigates a fragment of the Itineraries by William Worcestre recorded on the 25 of August 1479, and reflecting memories from the 30s of the same century. In the fragment the hermit of Elsing, who claims to have accompanied the Queen Philippa (1394-1430) in her Scandinavian lands, also provides some information regarding Novgorod the Great. These scattered passages are analysed against the data obtained from other European authors who wrote about this Russian city in the fifteenth century. The Flemish knight Ghillebert de Lannoy was the first in this century to provide some testimony on Novgorod, and this fragment appears now to be chronologically the runner up. Although it is comparatively short, it offers some pieces of important information about Novgorod noticed only by later observers. The editions of the text by J. Nasmith (1778) and J. H. Harvey (1969) were checked against the manuscript source (Cambridge, Corpus Christi MS 210), and some new readings have been suggested. The text contains a number of examples of code-switching, and they are also discussed as well as cases of acculturation and accommodation found in the fragment.

Alexey Gippius has shown that the text of the First Novgorodian Chronicle for the 12th – the early 14th centuries can be divided into segments written by archiepiscopal annalists who changed at approximately the same times as archbishops themselves. Alexander Bobrov made similar observations concerning the annals for the 15th century. The period between 1331 and 1421 is the least studied. The author makes observations concerning the content of the annals for those years (reporting certain kinds of events, mentioning certain kinds of details, etc.) which, in total, lead to the same conclusion: between 1331 and 1421, as earlier and later, the annals were patronized by Novgorodian archbishops, and changes of annalists probably followed in most of the cases the changes of their patrons. А.А.

S. M. Mikheev. Two recensions of the Načal’nyj svod in Novgorod chronicles of the 12th and 15th centuries (on the textual history of the Primary chronicle) The article explores the textual history of the 11th and early-12th century Old Russian Primary chronicle. The author examines the following issues: the reconstructed textual source for the protograph of the so-called Novgorod-Sophia group of chronicles for the years 1018–1070; the textual source for the Younger recension of the Novgorod first chronicle for 1045–1074; the source for brief reсоrds of the events of 1020–1115 in both recensions of the Novgorod first chronicle. As an interim result the author proposes a new stemma reflecting his reconstruction of the history of the Primary chronicle. The last part of the article deals with issues related to the study of the narrative text that the Primary chronicle had been based on. The article proposes and substantiates the hypothesis that there had been two versions of the Načal’nyj svod (lit. “Initial compilation”) and that fragments of both texts are present in the existing manuscripts: the older “original” version had served as a source for the protograph of the Novgorod-Sophia group of chronicles for the years 1018–1070, whereas both recensions of the Novgorod first chronicle can be traced back to a later (“second”) edition of the Načal’nyj svod.
