Democracy in Times of Crises: Challenges, Problems and Policy Proposals (with Emmanouil M. L. Economou, Nicholas C. Kyriazis)2022 •
Inspired by the democratic origins of the Greek naval victory at Salamis, the book discusses the current pressing issues of democracy worldwide. In 12 carefully selected chapters, well-renowned scholars from around the globe discuss topics such as Brexit, Euroscepticism, or the rise of populism. The authors further analyze various aspects of democracy, as well as various types of democratic regimes, such as mixed government, direct democracy, and cases of quasi democracies. While doing so, they relate this discussion to the pivotal question of how the quality of democracy today can be improved, seeking answers and solutions to current pending problems at the global level. This book is the second out of two edited volumes as a sequel of an international academic conference titled Salamis and Democracy: 2500 Years After that was organized on the occasion of the 2500th anniversary of the great historical event of the Battle of Salamis, which saved Greek culture and the newly founded democratic regimes throughout the Hellenic world during the Classical period (508-323 BCE). The book is a must-read for scholars and students of political science, economics, and law, as well as policy-makers interested in a better understanding of democracy, governance, populism, social choice, and constitutional law.
This week, two thousand five hundred years ago, a Greek fleet, off the waters of Athens, defeated a much larger Persian one. This naval victory against the odds put an end to the long-term plan of the Persian empire to subjugate all the Balkans. It began the decades-long war that Athens would lead to expel the Persians entirely from the Dardanelles, Anatolia’s coasts and the Aegean Sea’s islands. Salamis, in 480 BC, is thus, probably, the turning point in the history of classical Greece. At the time, the Greeks agreed that the Athenians had contributed the most to this unlikely victory. This battle was possible only because the Athenian dēmos (‘people’), a few years earlier, had decided to build Greece’s largest fleet of state-owned warships. Their decision to put every last Athenian on their decks gave the Greeks a fighting chance. Yet, these innovative and courageous decisions by the dēmos were not one-offs. They were part of a remarkable record of military success that dated back to their foundation of Athenian democracy a few decades earlier.

Democracy and Salamis-2500 Years After the Battle that Saved Greece and the Western World (with Emmanouil M. L. Economou, Nicholas C. Kyriazis)2022 •
In this book, well-renowned international scholars discuss topics related to various aspects of the history of the Battle of Salamis, inspired by the democratic origins of the Greek naval victory at Salamis. They present deductions from the battle that can be useful for today, and seek answers for a more prosperous and brighter future for our societies. Their analyses are divided into five parts in the book: 1) The democratic implications of the Battle of Salamis; 2) The strategies that lead to monumental naval victories; 3) The institutional implications of the Battle of Salamis; 4) Various societal aspects of the Athenian democracy; 5) The interconnections between two glorious battles: Thermopylae and Salamis. This book is the first out of two edited volumes as a sequel of an international academic conference titled Salamis and Democracy: 2500 Years After that took place between October 3rd and October 5th, 2020, on the occasion of the 2500th anniversary of the great historical event of the Battle of Salamis, which saved Greek culture and the newly founded democratic regimes throughout the Hellenic world during the Classical period (508-323 BCE). The book is a must-read for scholars and students of history, political science, economics, and law, as well as policy-makers interested in a better understanding of classical, ancient, and political history, democracy, strategy, governance, and social choice.
The employability of higher education graduates is nowadays one of the first priorities in Greece and last but not least in Europe. A smooth and successful vocational socialization of higher education graduates-future workers or entrepreneurs-is a substantial goal of educational systems and policy makers. The contribution therefore of higher education in entrepreneurship and consequently employability can be both a teaching effort (as possible) and the organized transfer of experience and reflection. But because entrepreneurship is not taught ex cathedra, is necessary to operate structures, through which the above mentioned could be done. The creation, operation and further development of Liaison Offices is crucial for the accomplishment of many goals from Higher Education Institutes and as a result its graduates success. Liaison Offices play a vital part by linking the University with society and market through their activities and ‘the good practices” they apply. This paper presents the results of the study which was done in the frames of the "Tempus IV-6TH “UNITE PROJECT Τ.Ε.Ι. ΟF PIRAEUS”, concerning the good practices in European Universities and especially the case of Liaison Office T.E.I. of Piraeus. The scientific team of the Liaison Office attempts to analyze and present the supporting structures to promote employment and entrepreneurship educational information as offered and developed in Greek and European universities to accomplish their function as channel of communication between institutions and industry. The structure of T.E.I. Piraeus is presented and the services offered in particular, by the Liaison Office. Last but not least, this paper analyzes the results and impacts of the operation of these structures such as Liaison Offices, creating tools that lead to useful conclusions for further development and optimal deployment of networks pursuing partnerships based on the role they perform. KEY WORDS: Liaison Offices, Good practices, Sectors, Mission, Code of Ethics.
