Background Suppression of immune system in treated cancer patients may lead to secondary infections that obviate the need of antibiotics. An indirect enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed and its diagnostic potential evaluated for rabbits infected by Trichophyton mentagrophytes. Within-run and between-run coefficient of variance varied from 2.3 to 7.7% and from 5.9 to 8.5%, respectively, indicating satisfactory reproducibility of the ELISA. There was no significant cross-reaction with antigens of Microsporum canis, Malassezia pachydermatis and Aspergillus fumigatus. The level of specific IgG to Trichophyton mentagrophytes was measured in sera of 25 11-week-old and 12 younger infected rabbits. There was no significant difference in the IgG level between 12 5-week-old infected rabbits and controls (p = 0.38). The antibody response was higher in 12 7-week-old rabbits compared with controls (p = 0.001). The IgG level in 25 11-week-old rabbits differed from the controls very significantly (p < 0.0001). The challenges which the large scale microalgal industry is facing are associated with the high cost of key operations such as harvesting, nutrient supply and oil extraction. The high-energy input for harvesting makes current commercial microalgal biodiesel production economically unfeasible and can account for up to 50% of the total cost of biofuel production. This study investigated the dynamics of Aspergillus fumigatus azole-resistant phenotypes in two compost heaps with contrasting azole exposures: azole free and azole exposed. After heat shock, to which sexual but not asexual spores are highly resistant, the azole-free compost yielded 98% (49/50) wild-type and 2% (1/50) azole-resistant isolates, whereas the azole-containing compost yielded 9% (4/45) wild-type and 91% (41/45) resistant isolates. From the latter compost, 80% (36/45) of the isolates contained the TR46/Y121F/T289A genotype, 2% (1/45) harbored the TR46/Y121F/M172I/T289A/G448S genotype, and 9% (4/45) had a novel pan-triazole-resistant mutation (TR46(3)/Y121F/M172I/T289A/G448S) with a triple 46-bp promoter repeat. In-vitro antifungal activity of acetone, methanol and chloroform extracts of Parmotrema tinctorum (Despr.ex.Nyl.) Hale. was investigated against ten plant pathogenic fungi viz. Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus fumigatus, Alternaria alternata, Fusarium oxysporum, Fusarium solani, Fusarium roseum, Ustilago spp., Albugo candida and Penicillium citrinum , with reference to commercially available synthetic antifungal drug Ketoconazole (positive control) using disk diffusion assay. Methanol extract was most effective against all investigated fungi followed by acetone and chloroform extract. Principal component analysis (PCA) concluded that though Ketoconazole was effective against five of the investigated fungi, the extracts of Parmotrema tinctorum were more effective against rest of the five broad spectrum plant pathogenic fungi (Aspergillus fumigatus,Fusarium solani, Fusarium roseum, Penicillium citrinum and Ustilago spp.).
