ENGLISH: When the name Carlo Borromeo turns up in musicological contexts, it is invariably associated either with the ‘textual intelligibility’ issue (the Cardinals’ Commission, Vincenzo Ruffo, etc.) or with the liturgical repercussions of the reforms he carried out in Milan (the disciplining of church musicians and the clergy, the revision of the Ambrosian rite, and so on). This stereotyped view has obscured many other aspects of Borromeo’s experience of music. Following clues contained in recent interdisciplinary literature on the Milanese scene, and browsing through Carlo’s early biographies and other documents, one can gain a much more vivid and accurate picture of the future saint’s ‘sonic life’. His music therapy sessions as a (worn out) student in Pavia, the musical homages he received during his life and after his death, the impressive details on the soundscape of Borromean Milan given by his biographers, all suggest that the relation between this key figure of the Italian Cinquecento and the musical civilization of his time was rich and complex, well beyond the clichés, and that it deserves to be studied with fresh interest.

ITALIAN: «Carlo Borromeo e la musica»… Ancora? Un argomento del genere rischia di essere liquidato con un’alzata di sopracciglio. Il Concilio tridentino e la commissione cardinalizia, Vincenzo Ruffo, l’intelligibilità delle parole, l’inasprimento delle norme disciplinari per i cantori e il clero, la valorizzazione della liturgia ambrosiana: temi già trattati più e più volte, seppur non certo esauriti. Ma perché insistere? Perché, rileggendo documenti e biografie antiche e compulsando la letteratura interdisciplinare, ci si imbatte in aspetti cui finora i musicologi hanno prestato poca attenzione. Alla «vita sonora» di Carlo Borromeo si aggiungono così tasselli insospettati, e il rapporto fra la sua figura e la civiltà musicale del Cinquecento inizia a ritrovare, lontano dai cliché, tutta la sua complessità e ricchezza.

Ambrogio Figino’s late-sixteenth century portrait of the future saint Carlo Borromeo (1538-84) has long been revered for its subtle naturalism. Art historians place its fictions within a certain stylistic timeline, and beholders prize the work’s ability to capture the spirit of its pious sitter. Yet this portrait simultaneously participated in a different register of value. Borromeo passed away in 1584, precisely as the legal process of becoming a saint was being revived and revised in the name of Catholic reform. In this world of church bureaucracy, Borromeo’s portraits functioned first and foremost as measurable proof. Their ubiquity and multiplicity proved the power of his cult, and their intercessory efficacy was carefully calculated. Borromeo’s legal trial for sainthood is filled with stories of devotees supplicating before his likenesses and pressing his portraits to ailing body parts in hopes for a cure. Artistic concerns of quality fall away in these thousands of pages of quantifiable evidence. This paper argues that rubrics of artistry and cultic value did, however, collide in late sixteenth-century Italy. From this vantage point, the new impulses of church reform are seen to increase the authority of the artwork and its maker.

This paper retraces the presbyterial transformations of Milan Cathedral during Carlo Borromeo’s episcopate (1564-1584), suggesting new observations on their conception. Following copious documentation (mainly in the archive of Veneranda Fabbrica), the author then traces the building history of the wooden choir, which hosts a vast cycle of carved scenes of the patron Ambrose’s life as well as figures of saint bishops, martyrs and relics, most of which were drawn by Pellegrino Tibaldi. This documentation allows to know new information about carvers, such as Riccardo Taurino’s year of birth, and to attribute to Tibaldi a capital unifying the three architectural orders. Letters consent to better know the long research for subjects to be carved in the choir (traditionally entirely attributed to Carlo Bascapè, but concerning Pietro Galesini and the Jesuits Francesco Adorno and Manuel de Sá) and prove a strict relationship with the Tabula Archiepiscoporum, the newly edited Breviary and Liber Notitiae Sanctorum Mediolani. The figurative cycle of the wooden choir – whose centrality in Carlo Borromeo’s cultural politics emerges in ephemeral decorations for the translation of Saint Simpliciano in 1582 – provides the occasion for new iconographic observations about histories of saint Ambrose, figures of martyrs and grotesque mascarons under the upper trabeation of stalls.

The Path of Humility: Caravaggio and Carlo Borromeo establishes a fundamental
relationship between the Franciscan humility of Archbishop of Milan Carlo
Borromeo and the Roman sacred works of Caravaggio. This is the first book
to consider and focus entirely upon these two seemingly anomalous personalities
of the Counter-Reformation. The import of Caravaggio’s Lombard artistic
heritage has long been seen as pivotal to the development of his sacred style,
but it was not his only source of inspiration. This book seeks to enlarge the
discourse surrounding Caravaggio’s style by placing him firmly in the environment
of Borromean Milan, a city whose urban fabric was transformed into a
metaphorical Via Crucis. This book departs from the prevailing preoccupation—
the artist’s experience in Rome as fundamental to his formulation of
sacred style—and toward his formative years in Borromeo’s Milan, where
humility reigned supreme.

Carlo Borromeo (b. 1538–d. 1584), who was a cardinal archbishop of Milan (1564–1584), represented a model bishop in the post-Tridentine Catholic Church and was a leading figure of early modern Catholicism. Born in Arona (Novara), he was the nephew of Giovanni Angelo de’ Medici, later Pope Pius IV (1559–1565), who made the young Borromeo a cardinal and nominated him Secretary of State (1560). Until 1565 he was in Rome; he served in the Curia during the last period of the Council of Trent (1562–1563) and conducted the papal correspondence with the legates in Trent. In 1563 he was ordained priest and received episcopal consecration. From the beginning of 1566, after the death of Pius IV and until the end of his life, he resided almost continuously in the archdiocese of Milan, where he started an ambitious program of reform. Following the decrees of the Council of Trent, Borromeo introduced systematic pastoral visitations and provincial and diocesan synods. He improved the education of the secular clergy and the control of the religious orders. He supported confraternities for lay people and reinforced the value of penance and confession. His patronage of arts and music and his care for sacred architecture also had a great influence beyond the archdiocese. This plan of reform created frequent conflicts both with the Spanish governor of Milan, since Borromeo refused to allow political authorities to intervene in religious matters, and with the papacy, because of Borromeo’s insistence on episcopal rights. He became the model of the post-Tridentine bishop in Italy and beyond. On 22 October 1569, while he was praying in the chapel of the episcopal palace, Borromeo escaped an assassination attempt. A member of the Brothers of Humility (Humiliati) who was opposed to Borromeo’s reforms fired a shot that grazed Borromeo’s side. His survival was considered a miracle and bolstered his saintly reputation. He died in 1584 and was canonized in 1610. His feast day is 4 November.

The first part of this article examines different types of portraits in the guise of religious figures that came into existence, and sets forth the reasons why the appearance of these disguised portraits in a sacred context was held in abhorrence in early modern times. Various comments on this phenomenon by the most prominent theologians and polemecists of the sixteenth and seventeenth century (Murner, Savonarola, Erasmus, Molanus, Borromeo, Paleotti, among others) are drawn together in order to analyse the overall nature of the condemnation of portraits in the guise of holy figures. The scope of this paper is confined to the judgement of these particular portraits by ecclesiastic writers in Europe between 1500-1650, and more distinctively, to the restrictions imposed on portraits by local church authorities in the Southern Netherlands. In the second part these regulations will be connected to actual portrait conventions in Antwerp, Ghent and Bruges. Special attention is paid to the the Provincial Council of Mechlin of 1607 and subsequent synods and decrees that tried to put an end to the dipiction of private persons as part of a religious painting that served as an altarpiece.

This paper explains the biography, the artistic patronage, and collectionism of Count Pietro Antonio Lonati, a Milanese nobleman and parent in-law to the archbishop Carlo Borromeo. Lonati was a ‘man-at-arms’, who struggled at the battle of Lepanto, nearest to the general captain Don Juan de Austria. He was also a fine connoisseur of art, and he knew painters like Bernardino and Antonio Campi, and famous embroiderers like Scipione Delfinone and Camillo Pusterla. In addition, he was patron of the architect and cartographer Giovanni Battista Clarici. In his art collection, which is described with an inventory and short text, there were paintings by Jacopo Bassano’s workshop, a rare painting by Mathis Gerung and a precious series of portraits of the Spanish royal family.

Devotional images in Renaissance Italy often compare divine visions to an enlivened statue or work of art, thereby heightening the effect of divine immediacy. Yet the early modern period also saw the emergence of another kind of picture that is much less studied. This alternative model favoured the apparent stoniness or emptiness of artistic simulacra – as seen in Cerano’s painted representation of the Virgin in the guise of a marble statue rendered in grisaille. It is a striking departure from Catholic reformers’ insistence on the mimetic naturalism of true images. As this paper shows, Cerano’s work went against the predominant paradigm of imitation, whereby artistic replicas acted as potent transmitters of divine presence inherent in the original cult image. The work presents an alternative to the true ‘living’ image by defending the artistic copy as an efficacious, but also inanimate, substitute for the divine prototype.

The years between 1560 and 1584 represent a turning point for the Sacro Monte of Varallo Sesia, one of the most important sanctuaries in Northern Italy. The Sacro Monte was founded in 1491 by the Franciscan friar Bernardino Caimi with the aim of recreating the sacred sites of the Holy Land in the Catholic Europe. Around 1560, as the Council of Trent was coming to an end, Giacomo d’Adda – a wealthy patrician from Milan – entrusted the Late Renaissance architect Galeazzo Alessi with the design of a renovation plan for the Sacro Monte. The project took form in a manuscript volume of drawings known as ‘Libro dei Misteri’ (Book of the Mysteries of the Life of Christ). Thanks to the Libro dei Misteri, Galeazzo Alessi introduced in the Sacro Monte a ‘nuovo miglior ordine’ (‘new better order’), that radically changed not only the artistic, architectural and devotional instances of the Fabbrica, but also its administrative organisation. This ambitious plan was marked by the continuous disagreements with the Franciscan friars of Varallo – who were in charge of the religious life on the Sacro Monte – and by the efforts to get financial aid for the accomplishment of Alessi’s ‘new better order’. Nevertheless, the local patricians (the ‘vicinanza’) welcomed the plan by Giacomo d’Adda and its architectural project, as presented by Galeazzo Alessi in the Libro dei Misteri. From that moment onwards – at least until 1584 – , the ‘vicinanza’ would undertake to transform the ‘Hierusalem’ of Bernardino Caimi in a pivotal monument to the Counter-Reformation.
This book investigates the administrative and building history of the Sacro Monte between 1560 and 1580. These were years in which the fame of the Sacro Monte bloomed, as it became a model of many others ‘Sacri Monti’ built throughout the Alps in the following centuries. The Sacro Monte of Varallo is a dynamic and complex reality, the scene of continuous administrative contrasts and of an intense building activity. A leading role in its history was played by Giacomo d’Adda, who was able to give form to his economic and political ambitions on the Valsesia region through his arts patronage on the Sacro Monte. Thanks to the analysis of previously unpublished documents, this book focuses on the role of the secular patronage, the religious institutions involved in the ‘new better order’ (Carlo Borromeo and the Order of Friars Minor), and Martino Bassi, who inherited Galeazzo Alessi’s position as chief-architect on the Sacro Monte between 1578 and 1583.

Gli anni che vanno dal 1560 al 1584 costituiscono una fase decisiva per il Sacro Monte di Varallo Sesia, uno dei principali luoghi di devozione dell’Italia settentrionale, fondato nel 1491 dal frate minore osservante Bernardino Caimi per riprodurre nell’Occidente cristiano i più importanti monumenti di Terra Santa. È proprio intorno al 1562-65, quando a Trento si stanno svolgendo le fasi conclusive del Concilio, che il ricco patrizio milanese Giacomo d’Adda commissiona all’architetto perugino Galeazzo Alessi un progetto di rinnovamento per il Sacro Monte, illustrato in un volume manoscritto di disegni chiamato ‘Libro dei Misteri’ (1565-72). Il progetto di Galeazzo Alessi dà vita a una radicale trasformazione del complesso francescano, a un ‘nuovo miglior ordine’ sia dal punto di vista artistico, architettonico e devozionale, che nell’organizzazione della Fabbrica. Tra i contrasti amministrativi con i frati minori – che gestiscono la vita religiosa sul Sacro Monte – e le difficoltà nel reperire le risorse economiche per la realizzazione del ‘nuovo miglior ordine’, il patriziato locale (la ‘vicinanza’) accoglie con entusiasmo il grandioso piano di Giacomo d’Adda e Galeazzo Alessi e, da questo momento in avanti, si impegna nella trasformazione della Hierusalem di Bernardino Caimi in un monumento esemplare della cristianità riformata.
Questo libro ripercorre la vicenda costruttiva e amministrativa del Sacro Monte tra il 1560 e il 1584, anni cruciali per il successo del monumento valsesiano, in cui si fondano le basi per un modello replicato nell’arco prealpino nei due secoli successivi. Il Sacro Monte di Varallo è una realtà dinamica e complessa, teatro di continui scontri amministrativi e intensa attività edilizia. In questo scenario spicca la figura di Giacomo d’Adda, che, per oltre un ventennio, riesce a dare forma alle sue ambizioni economiche e politiche in Valsesia attraverso il mecenatismo artistico e architettonico sul Sacro Monte. L’analisi di un ricco apparato documentario, in gran parte inedito, fornisce nuovi strumenti per valutare l’intera vicenda, riconsiderando il ruolo della committenza laica, delle istituzioni religiose coinvolte (l’arcivescovo milanese Carlo Borromeo e l’Ordine dei Minori Osservanti) e di Martino Bassi, l’architetto che dal 1578 al 1583 raccoglie la pesante eredità di Galeazzo Alessi nel cantiere del Sacro Monte.

Nel corso del Cinquecento e del Seicento le chiese del territorio sanfeliciano accolgono testimonianze d’arte che riflettono le contingenze culturali e spirituali ambientate nel clima antecedente e successivo al Concilio di Trento. Aspetti di una devozionalità riconducibile alla “riforma” cattolica – da intendersi come ricerca di una rigenerata dimensione spirituale nell’alveo della Chiesa romana – si rinvengono accanto al tono propagandistico dell’arte della Controriforma, che vede le immagini sacre divenire strumenti essenziali di pedagogia religiosa e di edificazione morale; così come testi visivi di un linguaggio semplice e piano, rivolto a un’utenza popolare, si succedono ad altri dall’eloquio aulicamente eletto, degno della più raffinata corte rinascimentale.
L’influsso della Controriforma sulla produzione sacra e l’arredo chiesastico naturalmente si protrarrà con vigore lungo il Seicento e oltre; infatti, anche nel contesto delle chiese rurali, avrà incisivi riflessi sulla fenomenologia artistica, dovuti a molteplici fattori fra cui l’istituzione della struttura parrocchiale, con la creazione delle scuole della dottrina cristiana, tesa all’istruzione catechistica dei fanciulli dei ceti popolari, che poteva rinvenire un supporto proprio nel medium delle immagini sacre; e ancora, la riorganizzazione della liturgia e dei riti, con l’impulso conferito alle antiche devozioni e l’introduzione di nuove, la costituzione ex novo o la “rifondazione” di confraternite e pie unioni, il rinsaldarsi degli antichi ordini religiosi e il sorgere e l’affermarsi dei nuovi.

Questo saggio è stato scritto prima del terremoto del maggio-giugno 2012, quando il “Duomo” dei Pico, insigne Collegiata dei Bernardi, dei Personali, dei Bergomi, dei Maffei, dei Rosselli, con opere dei Francia, Prospero Sogari Spani detto il Clemente, Sante Peranda, ancora s’innalzava solenne, scrigno grandioso dei valori artistici espressi nei secoli dalla devozione di tante generazioni, dei principi Pico e delle nobili famiglie della loro corte. Un patrimonio, nel senso di eredità dei padri, che certamente non potrà andare perduto, ma che rifiorirà qui, dove sono le sue antiche nobilissime radici.

This article examines a group of recently discovered drawings related to the construction of a new church in the Sacro Monte of Varallo. Over the last forty years, scholars have paid particular attention to the history of the Sacro Monte in the second half of the Sixteenth Century, especially on the leading role played by the Archbishop Carlo Borromeo, who visited the pilgrimage site four times between 1568 and 1584, and Galeazzo Alessi, entrusted with the job of redesigning the entire complex in 1565, a project described in a manuscript volume of architectural drawings known as Libro dei Misteri. Scholars, however, have never deepened the history of the Sacro Monte in the two decades after the conclusion of the Libro dei Misteri. The group of unpublished drawings previously mentioned was realized in 1572-1573 and shed new light on the history of the Sacro Monte after Alessi’s departure from Milan (1569). These documents describe the project of a new church commissioned by Giacomo d’Adda, patron of the Libro dei Misteri, in place of the Church of the Assumption, one of the most important and ancient buildings of the complex. The result is a new modern ecclesiastical building, in line with the most advanced architectural researches in the Borromean Milan and fully conformed to the Counter-Reformation ideas. As argued in this article, the design of the church offers an original solution to the ‘practical, liturgical and theological considerations’ emerged after the Council of Trent and set out in Carlo Borromeo’s Instructionum Fabricae Ecclesiasticae a few years later.

Il contributo si basa sullo spoglio dei Libri Mastri della Mensa Arcivescovile, conservati presso l’Archivio Storico Diocesano di Milano, per gli anni dell’episcopato di Federico Borromeo (1595-1631) e, in particolare, a ridosso della cerimonia di canonizzazione di san Carlo Borromeo (1 novembre 1610), mettendo in evidenza la committenza e la produzione di medaglie devozionali. Consistenti risultano i quantitativi e molte le maestranze coinvolte. Scarne invece sono le descrizioni degli oggetti, che ipoteticamente possiamo riferire alle celebrazioni per il nuovo santo. Tra questi è la notizia di una medaglia d’oro, realizzata da Gaspare Mola, donata dall’arcivescovo a Jan Brueghel il Vecchio.
I documenti sono accostati a due esemplari di medaglie in argento conservati presso il Civico Medagliere del Castello Sforzesco: due rare fusioni raffiguranti, sul dritto, l’immagine del santo e sul rovescio il motto Humilitas. A qualificarle come prodotto di rara raffinatezza è l’appensorio con i tre cerchi intrecciati, simbolo dei Borromeo. Le due medaglie sono poi messe a confronto con l’effigie del santo realizzata da Domenico Pellegrini per la pala d’altare della cappella dell’Arcivescovado e con alcune fusioni successive.

The paper is based on a complete examination of Libri Mastri (i.a. expense books), documents preserved in the Milanese Diocese historic archive, focusing on the time when Federico Borromeo was the archbishop of Milan (1595-1631) and, in particular, close to the ceremony for Charles Borromeo’s canonization (1st November 1610). One purpose is to underline the commission and creation of religious medals: their quantity is considerable and many craftsmen were involved. Bare, instead, are the objects described, and so we can only assume that they were all commissioned for the ceremony for the new saint. Among them, we have one piece of information about a golden medal by Gaspare Mola, donated by the bishop to Jan Brueghel The Older.
Documents are compared to two medal samples made of silver preserved in the Civic Medal Collection of the Sforza Castle: two rare meltings representing, on one face, saint Charles half-bust and, on the other, the motto Humilitas. The hang ring, that has the shape of three intersected rings, the Borromeo’s family emblem, qualify them as a rare and polished product. The two silver medals are at the end compared to the image of saint Charles depicted by Domenico Pellegrini for the Bishop Palace altarpiece and to other medals melted later.

Il primo contatto di Genova con la Compagnia di Gesù risale al 1552 ma solo nel 1623 l’ordine di Sant’Ignazio riuscì ad individuare in via Balbi la sede definitiva per il Collegio.
Questo lungo lasso di tempo trova spiegazione in un difficoltoso processo di insediamento che vide i Gesuiti scontrarsi non solo con gli altri ordini religiosi, ma anche con il clero e con il governo della Repubblica: oggetto di critiche furono non solo i metodi dell’ordine, ma anche la dottrina in materia di usura, la diretta dipendenza dal Papato e gli intensi legami con la nobiltà spagnola.

La mostra è la registrazione per immagini di alcuni fatti di rilievo per la prima volta accessibili al grande pubblico. Il parallelo tra documenti storici e materiale recente intende stabilire nessi tra la ricezione del San Carlone in epoche e culture diverse e porre
domande sul valore dell’opera nella contemporaneità. L’esposizione non si esaurisce in questa sede ma offre i riferimenti per successivi approfondimenti a chi volesse andare oltre il livello estetico-intuitivo.

Musiche per Carlo al tempo di Federico Il quattrocentesimo anniversario della canonizzazione di Carlo Borromeo rappresenta un'occasione preziosa per tornare a confrontarsi con l'eredità culturale e intellettuale di una figura che, pur fra i suoi molteplici interessi, ha dato un contributo indubbiamente significativo anche alla storia della musica sacra tardorinascimentale. In questo senso, la musicologia più recente ha contribuito a una più perspicua definizione del ruolo effettivamente svolto dal Borromeo nell'ambito della riforma della musica da chiesa, inserita nel più ampio quadro della riforma liturgica tridentina, mettendo a fuoco il suo contributo sia nelle fasi pre-paratorie del Concilio, sia nel successivo periodo post-conciliare 1. Vi è tuttavia un altro aspetto di quella che potremmo definire l''eredità musi-cale' di Carlo che merita di essere messo in luce, ed è quello che riguarda la proliferazione, soprattutto in àmbito milanese, di musiche di vario genere in qualche modo legate alla sua figura, che continuò indiretta-mente a esercitare un influsso significativo sugli sviluppi della musica liturgica locale anche dopo la sua scomparsa, soprattutto nei decenni successivi alla sua canonizzazione 2. Fra le musiche composte in onore di Carlo la prima (e forse la più nota) è il mottetto policorale a otto voci Deficit gaudium di Giulio Ce-1 Non è questa la sede per ripercorrere gli esiti raggiunti dai diversi studi sull'argomento. As part of a series of studies on the Tridentine pastoral, this article aims to analyze the main pedagogical directions which guided the education of the clergy in caring for souls in the ministry of the Word after the Council of Trent, by examining two works written by the bishop of Verona Agostino Valier, at the request of the Archbishop of Milan, Carlo Borromeo: the De rhetorica ecclesiastica ad clericos libri and the Homiliae in Evangelia secundum ritum Ambrosianum. The article reconstructs the genesis of these works through analysis of the correspondence between the two prelates and studies their contents and purposes, with attention to the more general process of the regeneration of preaching as praecipuum munus of the bishop and clergy in cura animarum promoted in the aftermath of Trent.

Soon after the canonization of St. Carlo Borromeo, Cardinal Benedetto Giustiniani commissioned Lorenzo Garbieri to create three paintings for one of the chapels in the newly-erected Barnabite church of San Paolo Maggiore in the center of Bologna, with scenes taken from the new saint's life. This was the first chapel to be decorated in the church. Here, as will be argued below, one may find the seeds of what eventually became common in representations of the saint: Barnabite propaganda meant to accentuate not only the saint himself and his important altruistic deeds, but also the order's part in those deeds, as well as the connections between the saint and the Barnabites. An emphasis is given to the Barnabites' participation in the very deeds that became associated with the saint and through which he became known during his lifetime as a living saint.

La cappella dei convittori del seicentesco Collegio dei Nobili o di San Carlo a Modena è episodio centrale nella cultura figurativa cittadina di metà Ottocento. Ultimata nel 1852, fu realizzata su progetto di Cesare Costa, che vi dispiega un dettato architettonico di classica raffinatezza, con il commento decorativo degli stucchi di Gaetano Venturi, titolare di un'alacre bottega che recuperava l'antica tecnica della scagliola. Nella volta, entro gli stucchi di Venturi, impreziositi da dorature, Ferdinando Manzini dipinge quattro medaglioni con le Virtù Cardinali, mentre sulle pareti  il celebre caposcuola Adeodato Malatesta compone una sorta di fregio con otto dipinti, raffiguranti Angioletti con simboli mariani e cristologici, ciclo completato ormai nel 1878. Dipinto in un arco almeno ventennale, il ciclo senz’altro accrebbe il prestigio culturale del collegio: anche le opere dell'autorevole Malatesta contribuivano, nel clima di generale laicizzazione di quei difficili anni settanta, a fare del San Carlo un punto di riferimento per la società modenese colta e liberal-moderata di cui lo stesso maestro era esponente. Sull'altare fu posta la Presentazione della Vergine al tempio, settecentesca tela ovale di Antonio Consetti, espressiva di un classicismo dal tono “recitato” e aulico, plasmato sugli esempi bolognesi di Gian Gioseffo Dal Sole e, ancor più, di Donato Creti, maestri dell'autore.

free access: Nelle sue opere Paolo Prodi ha indagato il costante conflitto tra Stati e Chiese per conquistare il monopolio nel modellamento dell’uomo moderno. Questo conflitto ha come esito la separazione mai definitiva e sempre mutevole tra diritto positivo e sfera della coscienza, tra pubblico e privato, in un processo storico in cui lo Stato moderno tende a sacralizzarsi nella misura in cui eredita le funzioni della Chiesa con un processo di osmosi. Partendo proprio dalle proposte prodiane, in questo contributo vorrei mettere in evidenza come nel caso dello Stato della Chiesa non solamente la separazione tra potere spirituale e potere temporale non si compie mai del tutto, ma questi due poteri trovano una sintesi peculiare nell’esercizio della funzione pastorale. Il sovrano pontefice, infatti, è anche “pastore” e la Chiesa, oltre ad esercitare l’autorità spirituale e il governo temporale, esercita un magistero pastorale che opera secondo economie di governo delle anime e dei corpi che le sono proprie. La disciplina dei sudditi e dei credenti, in altri termini, si affianca e s’intreccia alla cura del gregge. Nella prima parte del contributo ci si soffermerà sull’analisi prodiana del sovrano pontefice per ricostruire i tratti specifici del consolidamento istituzionale e dottrinale dello stato della chiesa tra Quattro e Seicento. Nella seconda parte si metterà in evidenza il ruolo svolto in questo processo da una civil conversazione cattolica intesa come modello di una “forma del vivere” cattolica . Nella terza parte si discutono i tratti della pastorale cattolica. Se il sovrano-pontefice rappresenta la modalità specificamente cattolica di intendere la sovranità politica ed esprime una sacralità “concentrata”, perché espressa nella gerarchia ecclesiastica e particolarmente nella figura del papa, la centralità che assume tra cinque e seicento la dimensione “pastorale” dell’impegno cattolico rappresenta la capacità della Chiesa, più che dello stato pontificio, di innervare il quotidiano dei fedeli attraverso la devozione, la preghiera, la confessione, le liturgie e le feste. Questa dimensione pastorale consente una presa sui corpi attraverso la forma della legge o i precetti della dottrina, e sulle anime per mezzo di una disciplina volontaria all’obbedienza e alla carità. Attraverso di essa il sacro si diffonde e pluralizza in una molteplicità di luoghi e di momenti che “riempiono” la vita del credente e lo vincolano alla ecclesia attraverso percorsi di adesione volontaria. L’Italia di prima età moderna costituirebbe, pertanto, un laboratorio particolarissimo in Europa nel quale la disciplina ecclesiastica e il controllo dottrinale esercitati dalla Chiesa si integrano con un governo pastorale disseminato e capillare.

It is well known that musicologists have already examined the relationship between Carlo Borromeo and music. However, the archbishop of Milan has been for a long time associated with a standard set of themes: actuation of musical decrees of the Council of Trent, intelligibility of the sung texts, discipline of church musicians and so on. In his first section, the paper demonstrates that this issue requires further investigation.
The following part of the research takes into consideration printed materials produced during Borromeo’s episcopacy to examine his personal musical theology and to confirm that music was important and meaningful for him.
In the last three parts of the work, attention is focused on Borromeo’s epistolary housed in Biblioteca Ambrosiana of Milan: starting from these documents, it is possible to discover, for example, new musical connections between Borromeo and Nicolò Sfondrati, bishop of Cremona or between Borromeo and Wilhelm V, duke of Bavaria; furthermore, these letters contain new details about Luca Marenzio, Gian Giacomo Gastoldi and new elements regarding Borromeo’s musical patronage activity as well.
