Cenete

El Gran Cardenal de España quiso, al legitimar a sus hijos nacidos de sendas rel-
aciones ilícitas, consolidarlos como miembros de la nobleza castellana. Así fue,
por ejemplo, con su primogénito Rodrigo, I marqués del Cenete y I conde del Cid,
emparentado por voluntad paterna con Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, el Cid Campeador.
Al apropiarse de esta ficticia genealogía, el prelado dotaba al mayorazgo legado a
éste de un simbolismo que, a medida que el marqués fue madurando y curtién-
dose en la guerra de Granada, las campañas italianas y las Germanías de Valencia,
cobraba mayor verosimilitud a través de sus actos y acciones. El objeto de este
trabajo es aproximarnos al perfil biográfico de Rodrigo de Mendoza y reseñar los
paralelismos que se observan entre su vida y la que llevó su pretendido y egregio
antepasado.

Abstract: The article follows the life journey of three generations of Barzanas during the Moorish
era within the Marquisate of Cenete (Granada). Lope de Barzana, a Moor who converted to
Christianity in the early sixteenth-century and who was bound to feudal power, came to control
the collection of state revenues as a “butler” (treasurer). His son Gerónimo, who was in his
mid-thirties, inherited the post and tried until the end of his life to keep an equidistant position
between his Moorish neighbors and the Governor. In his fifties, he confronted this power,
which led to his dismissal. Gerónimo’s children, along with other relatives, managed to stay in
the Cenete after the war in the Alpujarras and the expulsion of the Moors from the Kingdom of
Granada, while the others were welcomed into the Mendoza family’s holdings in Guadalajara.

En aquest treball transcrivim i, per tant, donem a conèixer l’elegia que el poeta i humanista valencià Joan Àngel González va compondre el 1523, la qual, a més, fou la seva opera prima, per tal d’introduir-nos no només en la producció literària de l’Humanisme autòcton sinó també per apropar-nos a la figura d’un noble, guerrer i humanista com fou el Marqués del Cenete, Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar i Mendoza.
