Change of State

This thesis studies a specific relationship between matter and form which can no longer be related to stability, solidity and objectuality, as it has been traditionally interpreted. To this aim, it firstly explores the plurivocity in the concepts of 'matter' and 'artistic material'; and secondly it examines a case study about water as a material presence in contemporary art. Over the course of the study, certain issues arise, such as the problematic use of notions like form, information and memory in the specific context of the artwork .

The  methodological lines of this thesis are an alternative approach to the artwork technical and material system, this understood as a synergistic and complex structure of symbolic, technological and imaginative relations. This methodology focuses on the evolution of the technical and technological thinking in the 20th century, establishing the connection between past and current uses of media and materials. Based on the principle of transversality, this study contributes to the expansion of the Third Culture by visualizing the dialogical relationship between art, science, technology and aesthetics. Thus, its starting point is the states of water (solid, liquid, and gas) as well as the technical and conceptual operations associated with this specific material. A selection of 258 artists or working groups and more than 500 works have been gathered along diverse actional and conceptual tendencies of water in its three states.

Archeology, technological thinking, anthropology, and material imagination are the key epistemological elements used to reflect on the encounter between the so-called traditional art mediums and new media in the 20th century —or from a broader perspective, between both the deterministic-mechanistic and the systemic-cybernetic currents of thought. In this context, water provides a paradoxical and exemplary temporal connectivity.

Resumen
La presente investigación tiene por objeto definir una zona muy poco tratada dentro de la historia del arte, en la que la relación entre materia y forma deja de poder aprehenderse como un fenómeno vinculado a los sentidos de estabilidad, solidez y objetualidad tal como se ha interpretado tradicionalmente. Para ello explora la plurivocidad de los sentidos de `materia´ y `material artístico´, confrontando esta perspectiva con el estudio del agua como presencia material en el arte contemporáneo, de lo que se derivan una serie de problemáticas respecto a los conceptos de forma, información, y por extensión memoria de la obra de arte.

Paralelamente se dibujan las líneas metodológicas de la semántica material como alternativa de aproximación al sistema técnico-material de la obra de arte, entendiendo éste como una estructura sinérgica y compleja de relaciones simbólicas, tecnológicas e imaginativas. La metodología propuesta pretende incidir en la evolución del pensamiento técnico y tecnológico del siglo XX, estableciendo puntos de conexión entre el uso actual de los medios y materiales artísticos, y sus antecedentes. Partiendo de la transversalidad, esta investigación se propone en última instancia contribuir a la expansión de la tercera cultura visibilizando las relaciones dialógicas entre creación artística, ciencia, tecnología y estética. Su puesta en práctica toma como punto de partida el agua en todos sus estados y las operaciones técnico-conceptuales asociadas a este material concreto. Una selección constituida por 258 artistas o grupos de trabajo y más de quinientas obras han sido recogidas en torno a las tendencias accionales y conceptuales del agua en sus estados sólido, líquido y gaseoso.

En definitiva, arqueología y antropología del pensamiento tecnológico e imaginación material son los elementos epistemológicos clave utilizados para reflexionar acerca de las cuestiones que definen el encuentro en el siglo XX entre los medios artísticos llamados tradicionales y los new media −o en un plano más amplio entre el pensamiento determinista-mecanicista y el sistémico-cibernético−, vehiculizadas por la paradójica conectividad temporal que ofrece el agua.

The aim of this paper is to compare two different responses to informings in Icelandic talk-in-interaction: the response particle nú and the minimal clausal er það 'is it'. The two tokens can occur in similar environments, and they often co-occur in the same sequence. The empirical data comprise around 15 h and 15 min of naturally occurring conversation including everyday conversations, phone calls, and phone-ins on the radio. The theoretical and methodological framework is interactional linguistics. The study shows that nú and er það respond to informings that are somehow significant in the given context, and, in that way, they contrast with the acknowledgment tokens já 'yes' and mm that avoid treating the prior turn as informative. However, despite these similarities, nú and er það also have a clear distribution of labor: while nú indexes the content of the previous turn as new and unexpected, er það receipts the informing with an indication that a confirmation or an elaboration is needed before it can be fully accepted. Furthermore, the analysis shows that an overlay of prosodic cues can shape the function of the response and index an affective stance.

The present article considers change-of-state predicates in Livonian and their possible development into future copulas. The focus is on the verbs īedõ ‘remain, stay; become’, sǭdõ ‘get; become’, and līdõ (synchronically a future copula), but also the verbs tūlda ‘come’ and lǟdõ ‘go’ are included for comparative purposes. The results show that all five verbs can be used for expressing change of state, but it depends on the particular verb and underlying construction, whether conveying the sense ‘become’ is a central or only a marginal function. This study shows that Courland Livonian fits well to the general picture of Northern Europe where the present tense form of a verb with meaning ‘become’ can be used for marking the future time reference, and at least one verb – līdõ – also appears as a future copula.Kokkuvõte. "In this paper, we argue that by making a careful distinction between the notions of inchoativity and telicity, we can gain new insight into how changes of state can be expressed in natural language. Our argument is based on an analysis of Spanish reflexive psychological verbs (SRPVs) such as aburrirse ‘to be/become bored’ and enfadarse ‘to become angry.’ We present diagnostics that clearly support the claim that while these verbs are inchoative, they are not telic, nor do they denote changes of state. Additional tests indicate that these verbs are not dynamic, either; however, we show that they lack dynamicity for different reasons: aburrirse verbs, because they are stative; enfadarse verbs, because they denote truly punctual eventualities.
We present a formal semantic analysis using the event ontology proposed in Piñón (1997). This analysis allows us to capture very naturally the similarities and differences between the two subclasses of SRPVs, to characterize their inchoativity, and to distinguish it from telicity. In addition, it supports a view of the Vendlerian aspectual classes on which the achievement class describes truly punctual eventualities and excludes certain predicates commonly (if not universally) assumed to belong to this class, such as the so-called degree achievement verbs."

The present study mainly aims to describe the mechanics of causative-inchoative alternation in modern Persian as well as the causative structure of its verbal system. In this scope, we provide a brief description of the phrase structure of the modern Persian and discuss its main causative-inchoative codification strategies: morphological, lexical and analytic causatives. When giving Persian examples, we use the Transcription procedure for Iranian toponymic items implemented by the Iranian National Committee on the Standardization of Geographic names and subsequently adopted and approved by the United Nations in 2012.

Este trabajo de investigación, que se inscribe en el marco teórico de la lingüística cognitiva, responde al objetivo de repertoriar y caracterizar los recursos necesarios para la expresión del evento de cambio emocional en español (L1 y L2) y en francés (L1), bajo un enfoque tanto descriptivo como contrastivo. Los resultados obtenidos han permitido formular algunas recomendaciones didácticas para la enseñanza de las nociones de cambio y emoción en lengua extranjera.

ABSTRACT To design a stable global computing environment supporting reliable job execution and covering unanticipated state changes of hosts, the dynamic characteristics (i.e. volatilities) of hosts should be considered. Since a host is not dedicated to the system, voluntary hosts are free to leave and join autonomously in the middle of execution. As current systems do not relate volatility to a scheduling procedure, global computing systems suffer from performance degradation, reliability loss, job interruption, and execution time delays. For dependable computation, we propose Advanced Stochastic Host State Modeling (ASHSM), which is based on Markov model relating to execution availability quantifying duration and regularity of execution patterns of each host. Through the model, the system predicts desktop activities and allocates jobs according to the host features. Furthermore ASHSM alleviates unreliability due to unstable resource provision and job suspension during execution.

Web-winding systems, such as tape drives, are often modeled as linear and time-invariant, but at least two nonlinearities are common in these systems. First, the reel radii and moments of inertia change as web media spools from one reel to another. Second, friction can draw a thin layer of air between the layers of web media wrapped on the take-up reel, making the system’s spring and damping characteristics nonlinear by allowing a greater length of media to vibrate freely. In addition to these nonlinearities, there is often uncertainty in the motor parameters. In the first part of this paper, feedback linearization ideas motivate state feedback and changes of variables that transform the system into decoupled and intuitively meaningful tension and velocity loops. For the case where tension measurements are available, Lyapunov redesign techniques are then used to develop control laws that are robust with respect to these nonlinearities and uncertainties.
