Il Charroi de Nîmes è una delle chansons de geste del cosiddetto ciclo guglielmino, in cui si narrano le imprese di Guillaume d'Orange, personaggio storicamente riferibile a Guglielmo di Tolosa, il cugino di Carlomagno preposto nel 789 all'amministrazione della Contea di Tolosa, che rientrava nel regno di Aquitania retto dal debole figlio di Carlo, Ludovico il Pio (il Louis del testo). Argomento principale del Charroi (sempre affiancato nei manoscritti da altri due esemplari del ciclo, il Couronnement de Louis e la Prise d'Orange, chiamati in causa da alcuni riferimenti interni) è la spedizione capitanata da Guillaume, che porterà all'affrancamento della città di Nîmes dal dominio saraceno. L'impresa è resa possibile da uno stratagemma militare analogo a quello del cavallo di Troia: i guerrieri cristiani penetrano nella città nascosti in botti caricate su un convoglio di carri (un charroi appunto), condotto da Guillaume ed alcuni compagni in abito di mercanti. Una cospicua parte della chanson, quella che precede le vicende della spedizione, ruota intorno a un secondo tema: il rapporto feudale fra il re di Francia Louis e il suo maggior vassallo Guillaume, con preciso riferimento ai diritti e ai doveri reciproci. Guillaume, dimenticato nell'annuale distribuzione dei feudi da parte del sovrano e non placato dai suoi ripetuti tentativi di risarcirlo per i grandi servizi prestati facendogli altre concessioni, giunge sull'orlo della ribellione al suo signore legittimo; la mossa, che romperebbe l'equilibrio feudale, è sventata ricorrendo a una soluzione ingegnosa del conflitto: l'attribuzione a Guillaume delle terres d'Espaigne, i territori del Midi dove si trova Nîmes, che dovrà conquistare perché occupati dai Saraceni e solo formalmente in possesso del re di Francia. In tale prospettiva è centrale il tema del dono: dono come obbligo, dovere, impegno, che nel rapporto feudale vincola reciprocamente il superiore e l'inferiore. Attribuire a Guillaume le terres d'Espaigne lo risarcirà per le mancanze di Louis, senza però intaccare i beni territoriali su cui si fonda la sovranità di questi. V'è infine nel Charroi un aspetto importante, che lo allontana in qualche misura dall'idea di chansons de geste intese esclusivamente a celebrare grandi imprese guerresche compiute da personaggi eroici, sul modello inarrivabile della Chanson de Roland e di simili prodotti 'alti' delle culture del passato. Il tessuto espressivo dell'opera, riportato in più punti a dimensioni di quotidianità fattuale , intrecciando la trama primaria del testo con l'ordito di contenuti riferiti all'esperienza comune e al basso materiale-corporeo e inserendovi momenti apertamente comico-grotteschi, al limite del serio-comico, ne rivela l'appartenenza a uno standard di narrazione definibile come 'mediano': che è poi quello che, sottendendo al portato epico 'alto' dei testi il 'basso continuo' di toni alternativi, caratterizza di norma le chansons de geste come genere. ,

This paper reworks a chapter of my PhD thesis where I discussed some emergences of carnival fights in Moniage Guillaume long (MGl); the imagery was linked to ritual anthropogenetic practices, finally refracted in “archetypal” plots. Here, it is more specifically identified as the reverberation of Carnival-Lent fights. On this basis I carefully propose to predate such representations, shedding new light on some remarks by Le Goff and nuancing the majority position in this regard (e.g. Bertolotti 1991). Furthermore, a glance on Enfances Guillaume provides a new framework for MGl. The fight with the double is seen as à deux tranchants: 1) heroic initiation; 2) potential of a parodic dialogue: co-essential polarities in the dialectic identifi cational process of a complex character-sign.

Rather than being a somewhat inept literary work, as it is sometimes thought to be, 'La Chanson de Willame' is rather a cohesive expression of the same strong orally-based epic tradition that produced 'La Chanson de Roland' and other chansons de geste. Its mixture of the sublime and the obscene is suggestive of a relation to a lively popular tradition. Its apparent narrative anomalies disappear when the poem is considered in that light.

Dating texts is one of the most important challenges for research into literary history. Only through a chronological ranking of texts, one can gain insight into the development of literature through time. Dating Middle Dutch chivalric epics is a complex issue, on which little agreement has been reached. Situating texts is often difficult because the original authors’ texts rarely survive and researchers have to work with much younger, often fragmentary copies. In this contribution, we present a critical state-of-the-art of recent research into dating
Middle Dutch chivalric epics. After a short discussion of the main dating methods, we present a chronological overview of Middle Dutch chivalric epics, based on a critical scrutiny of secondary literature. We hope to reach a synthesis as a point of reference for future research.

L'extrait qu'on va analyser est tiré par Le Couronnement de Louis, chanson qui appartient au Cycle de Guillaume d'Orange, l'un des cycles les plus importants et célèbres de la littérature médiévale, datant du XII e siècle. Il s'agit d'un passage très emblématique du fait que l'exploit, ici représenté, est systématiquement rappelé dans tout le cycle, notamment quand on fait l'éloge du héros Guillaume, loyal vassal du roi.
Après avoir permis le couronnement du fils de Charlemagne, Guillaume part en pèlerinage vers Rome, laquelle est, au même temps, menacée par les visées destructrices du roi sarrasin Gallafre. Celui-ci propose au pape que le sort de la cité soit décidé par un combat entre deux champions: le roi Corsolt, un géant terrifiant, d'un côté, et Guillaume, choisi par le pape lui-même, de l'autre.

This paper, a sequel to the one published in Vertigo 1-2/2018, presents a Slovak translation of the famous "Ubi sunt?" scene from the second part of La Chanson de Guillaume. Almost each stanza (laisse) is accompanied by extensive commentaries.

The transfer of Saracen arms into Frankish ownership is a leitmotif of many chansons de geste, but one whose significance for inter-imperial translation or translatio imperii has yet to be elucidated. In this essay, I focus on the Chanson d’Aspremont, a twelfth-century epic set in Calabria that narrates the pre-history of Durendal, Roland’s sword of Song of Roland fame, as an object inherited by Roland from its former royal Muslim owner. Drawing on cultural history and object-translation models derived from material and spolia studies, I read the sword’s symbolic transfer as evidence of Norman desire for and appropriation of former Fatimid imperium in Sicily.

The writing, reading and reception of a crusade-story in medieval Flanders, Norway, and Iceland.

This book relates a story about the writing, reading, and reception of one text in three different cultural and political contexts across Europe. The focus is on the story of the Christian knight Elye and his Saracen princess Rosamunde, which was translated into Old Norse in the thirteenth century. This is a study of three of the manuscripts in which the work is preserved: one Old French manuscript from Flanders (BnF, fr. 25516, c. 1280) and two Old Norse manuscripts, one from Norway (DG 4–7 fol., c. 1270) and one from Iceland (Holm Perg 6 4 to, c. 1400). These manuscripts represent three different rhetorical and communicative situations and show how the writing and reading of the same text was conditioned by the respective cultural and political environment. The book innovatively conveys Old Norse culture as an active respondent, participant, and thus modulator of European literary tendencies. Tracing the translation, transmission, and transformation of the text throughout Europe redefines aspects of the Latin-vernacular nexus in the Middle Ages, and thus presents a new and valuable voice in the discussion of medieval European literary and cultural systems.

Histories of the Crusades have moved away from characterising the conflict as a civilisational clash between Christianity and Islam, highlighting instead the porousness of religious and geopolitical boundaries in Iberia and the Levant. Yet twelfth-century sources in Old French and Arabic rarely present such a nuanced view outright. Reflecting on the constructedness of the motif of the female Other, I argue that these texts enacted and reinforced a Christian–Muslim dualism in the face of contrary realities of coexistence, fascination and even temptation. Religious difference was constructed and reconstructed through the prism of racial forms, thus facilitating the perpetuation of military conflict. In particular, the motif of the white, sensual Christian woman was used to exclude the enemy in repeated attempts to construct a coherent in-group identity that was, for all that, under constant threat of destabilisation.

My research is on the development of the horse as a status symbol in western Europe during the Middle Ages. Horses throughout history have often been restricted to the upper classes in non-nomadic societies simply due to the expense and time required of ownership of a 1,000lb prey animal. However, between 1000 and 1300 the perceived social value of the horse far surpasses the expense involved. After this point, ownership of quality animals begins to be regulated by law, such that a well off merchant or a lower level noble would not be legally allowed to own the most prestigious mounts, despite being able to easily afford one. Depictions of horses in literature become increasingly more elaborate and more reflective of their owners’ status and heroic value during this time. Changes over time in the frequency of horses being used, named, and given as gifts in literature from the same traditions, such as from the Waltharius to the Niebelungenlied, and the evolving Arthurian cycles, show a steady increase in the horse’s use as social currency. Later epics, such as La Chanson de Roland and La Cantar del Mio Cid, illustrate how firmly entrenched the horse became is the trappings of aristocracy.

L’elaborato ha come obiettivo l’analisi dei toponimi calabresi presenti nella Chanson d’Aspremont, una chanson de geste risalente al XII secolo scritta in francese antico. Quest’opera fu scritta e recitata ai soldati di Riccardo Cuor di Leone che sostano tra Reggio Calabria e Messina in attesa di partire per la terza crociata tra il 1190 e il 1191. Ambientata in Aspromonte, narra delle imprese di Carlo Magno in lotta contro il re africano Agolante e suo figlio Almonte, e dell’uccisione di quest’ultimo per mano di Orlando, che verrà iniziato cavaliere proprio sulle montagne aspromontane.

Nel primo capitolo è stato delineato tutto il profilo storico-politico dell’Europa e della Calabria in particolar modo. L’excursus storico effettuato descrive le invasioni e i cambiamenti che hanno interessato i territori europei e, parallelamente, la fine della dominazione bizantina nel
Sud Italia a favore dell’insediamento normanno; il capitolo si conclude con la fine della monarchia normanna e i preparativi per la terza crociata.
Nel secondo capitolo è stata analizzata in tutti i suoi aspetti la Chanson d’Aspremont, evidenziando gli obiettivi e le funzioni del testo, e la sua fortuna e posterità nel panorama letterario italiano durante l’Umanesimo.
Nel terzo capitolo, infine, dopo aver offerto una panoramica dei manoscritti che hanno tramandato la tradizione della Chanson e delle edizioni che ne sono scaturite, si è proceduto verso un’analisi storica dei luoghi che sono stati lo scenario d’azione della Chanson d’Aspremont e della loro importanza tanto dal punto di vista storico quanto geografico. È seguita poi un’analisi più specifica dei toponimi calabresi presenti nei manoscritti con codice “W”, “C” e “L3” ; i toponimi sono stati elencati e comparati nelle tre diverse edizioni che fanno riferimento a questi manoscritti. Infine, è stato analizzato il gradiente di realtà geografica correlata ai toponimi per verificare se i luoghi calabresi citati nell’opera sono reali oppure inventati dall’ignoto autore della Chanson.

The halo of mystery that surrounds the knight's sword in the Middle Ages corresponds to an ancient mythology echoed in the chansons de geste, Arthurian novels and Scandinavian sagas, as well as in iconography and archaeology. The sword is certainly a functional tool, a technical prowess and an object of art, but it is also an animated artefact which, by giving off a supernatural force, makes the knight invincible.
The fighter, the smith and the loving fairies who pass on their swords are at the heart of this book, which explores the mentalities of a bygone era whose stories continue to inspire heroic fantasy today. The sword is also the sign of the knight's social preponderance and the symbol of war, which he reserves exclusively for himself. It embodies all the intellectual abstractions surrounding the use of legitimate violence in society.

RESUMEN: El Cantar de mio Cid, una de las principales obras del canon literario español, es también una de las más importantes en el ámbito de la poesía épica medieval por sus valores estéticos, su influencia histórica y su fundamental papel en la conversión del Cid en un héroe del imaginario universal de la literatura. Aunque la bibliografía sobre esta obra resulta casi incontable, una obra de tal riqueza no se agota jamás a ojos de la crítica. En particular, los estudios comparativos relativos a la misma no han adquirido un desarrollo proporcional a la importancia y la influencia de este cantar de gesta. El objetivo de este libro es, entonces, tratar de nuevo algunos de los temas clave del poema y de su descendencia ibérica en las crónicas de la Edad Media (algunos de ellos bastante descuidados por la crítica precedente, como la dimensión simbólica del poema o sus aspectos hagiográficos), pero sobre todo profundizar en la comparación de su voz épica con la de otras literaturas heroicas, desde la épica románica hasta los gunki monogatari japoneses.
RÉSUMÉ: La Chanson de mon Cid est l’un des principaux ouvrages du canon littéraire espagnol est aussi une des pièces les plus importantes dans le cadre de la poésie épique médiévale, par ses valeurs esthétiques, par son influence historique et par son rôle capital pour faire du Cid un héros de l’imaginaire littéraire universel. Bien que la bibliographie sur cette œuvre soit presque innombrable, un ouvrage d’une telle richesse ne s’épuise jamais du point de vue de la critique. Spécialement, les études comparatistes à son égard n’ont jamais acquis un développement proportionnel à l’importance et à l’influence de cette chanson de geste. L’objectif du livre dont on propose l’édition est, alors, de revenir sur quelques-uns des thèmes clés du poème et de sa postérité hispanique dans les chroniques du Bas Moyen Âge (certains négligés en grande partie par la critique précédente, comme la dimension merveilleuse de la chanson ou ses aspects hagiographiques), mais surtout d’approfondir dans la comparaison de sa voix épique avec celle d’autres littératures héroïques, depuis l’épopée romane jusqu’aux gunki monogatari japonais.

Part of the geste du roi, the Chanson d'Otinel had not been the subject of an edition since the pioneer work of  F. Guessard and H. Michelant in 1858. Starting with the tangible objects that manuscripts are, and proceeding to the study of the tradition and work itself, this study aims to provide a new examination of all the available data, in order to enable a restoration of a song that has know an important diffusion in Medieval Europe, but whose scattered remains only are available to us.

This study is given a firmly methodological orientation, and searches to apply to the edition the epistemological progresses brought by recent contributions in the field of textual criticism and ecdotics, as well as by what is now called “Digital Humanities”. It aims at overcoming the debate between “New” and Traditional Philology, based on the common errors method or of Bedierist inspiration, to place itself in the perspective of a “Fourth Way” and of an edition “oriented towards the tradition”.

Digital scholarly editing and Digital Philology techniques are used in order to provide a full edition of the manuscript corpus, with “layered” transcriptions that give access to different representations and to the graphic system of all witnesses. The edition aims also at the study and description of the links between these witnesses, by suggesting a method of representation of textual variance and by rooting genealogical analysis in a global consideration of the tradition, including medieval translations (in Welsh, Norse, English) and derived versions.

The modelling and description of manuscripts and their texts – formalised by an xml/tei model conceived for this edition but seeking to be of more general interest – is clearly oriented towards data mining, and computational as well as traditional analysis (Palaeography, Scriptometry, Stemmatology). Methods from the fields of mathematical modelling, statistics, algorithmic, and artificial intelligence are put to use, as well as processes seeking to allow interoperability, scalability, and systematisation of editorial work (optical character recognition, linguistic tagging, collation), in a workflow centred on analysis. Main used languages are xml (tei, xslt), R and Python.

Several medieval texts tell the story of an imaginary voyage of Charlemagne to Jerusalem and Constantinople. Among them, the Latin Descriptio qualiter... (11th-12th century) contains several odd features, analyzed in the present paper: two curious letters, one of them containing a sequence of gobbledygook phrases. The present paper revisits the Descriptio qualiter...’s already known sources of inspiration, the Translatio Sanguinis Domini from the Benedictine abbey of Reichenau and an account by a certain monk Benedict from the monastery saint Andrew on Mount Soracte (both of them dating back to the 10th century). The analysis then explores the transliteration of Greek texts in the various manuscript variants of the Descriptio qualiter..., the use of voces magicae and rudiments of spoken Greek, as well as the possible misreading of a real 9th century Byzantine imperial letter on papyrus kept in the monastery of saint-Denis.

ITALIANO - Attraverso la presentazione e l’analisi – ovviamente parziali e circoscritte ad alcuni passi-campione, opportunamente scelti – di quattro testi variamente afferenti alla produzione epica di età normanna, in volgare e in latino, in Francia (la chanson di Gormont et Isembart), Inghilterra (il Carmen de Hastingae proelio attribuito a Guy d’Amiens) e Italia meridionale (i Gesta Roberti Wiscardi di Guglielmo il Pugliese e il Liber ad honorem Augusti di Pietro da Eboli), tra la seconda metà dell’XI secolo e l’ultimo scorcio del XII, si tenta di enucleare alcune delle modalità e delle tipologie distintive di tale produzione epica. Si tratta di un gruppo di testi, che si caratterizzano infatti per taluni elementi costitutivi e ricorrenti: 1) il richiamo alla tradizione epica classica (da Virgilio a Lucano a Stazio), tardo-antica (da Claudiano a Corippo) e medievale (da Ermoldo Nigello ad Abbone di Saint-Germain), non disgiunto talora (soprattutto nel caso del Carmen de Hastingae proelio) da evidenti e innegabili contaminazioni con le tipologie della saga e/o della leggenda “popolare”; 2) la forte componente encomiastica e celebrativa – unita alla dimensione di committenza e di “ufficialità” – rilevabile, soprattutto, nella raffigurazione di personaggi, a loro modo, “eccezionali” per coraggio, valentia nelle armi, forza morale e carisma psicologico; 3) l’impostazione talvolta “provvidenziale” e salvifica che gli autori desiderano imprimere alla loro narrazione e, in particolare, ai protagonisti che in essa si muovono e agiscono (tematica, questa, soprattutto evidente nella figura di Roberto il Guiscardo così come delineato e presentato da Guglielmo il Pugliese nel suo poema); 4) il gusto “moderno” – di una modernità, però, certamente non dimentica delle scaturigini dell’epica classica – per un componimento in genere e tendenzialmente “breve” (il più ampio dei poemi esaminati sono i Gesta Roberti Wiscardi, in ogni caso quantitativamente assai più ridotti non solo dell’Eneide, della Pharsalia o della Tebaide, ma anche della Iohannis di Corippo), racchiuso attorno a una singola geste (come in Gormont et Isembart e nel Carmen de Hastingae proelio) o a un singolo personaggio che assume un rilievo protagonistico (Roberto il Guiscardo ed Enrico VI, rispettivamente in Guglielmo il Pugliese e in Pietro da Eboli), ancorché non esclusivo.

Le fragment de Bruxelles, découvert au XIX e siècle, connu généralement sous le titre Gormont et Isembart, relate une bataille entre un roi païen, Gormont, secondé par un renégat, Isembart, et une armée franque sous le commandement d'un roi Louis. Ce texte, écrit dans la dernière moitié du XI e siècle ou la première du XII e , développe des péripéties présentant des similitudes avec des événements survenus dans la bataille d'Hastings telle que décrite par Guy d'Amiens dans le Carmen de Hastingae Proelio. Guy d'Amiens at -il écrit le texte à l'origine du poème à l'origine du fragment de Bruxelles en empruntant aux thèmes du Carmen ? Le poème, auquel appartient le fragment, est-il le résultat d'un remaniement anglo-normand ? Abstract : The Brussels fragment, discovered in the 19th century, more often titled : Gormund and Isembart, recounts a battle between a heathen king, Gormund, assisted by a renegade, Isembart, and a Frankish army, lead by a king named Louis. This poem, written in the second half of the 11th century or the first half of the 12th century, elaborates on episodes similar to the events of the Battle of Hastings, as described, in Carmen de Hastingae Proelio.

The article aims to outline aspects, features and functions of a cluster of characters in some chansons de geste, in particular Yon and Gaifier, both designated often as rulers of Aquitaine (or Gascony). Around these characters, we can individuate a pattern, in which the Aquitanian lord gives the hero his daughter’s hand, which means power and sovereignty; other features linked with Yon and Gaifier are wealth and treachery. Some features of the pattern can be rooted in the 8th-century struggle of Aquitanian dukes to remain independent from the Carolingian centralization of the power. In the second part, some hypotheses will be advanced about the relationship of the “Aquitanian pattern” with the plot of the Medieval Latin text Waltharius and of the Spanish romancero commonly entitled Gaiferos.

Il ms. Venezia, Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana, Fr. Z 13 (siglato V13 dagli specialisti) conserva, acefala e in attestazione unica, la Geste Francor, opera di un ignoto rimatore veneto attivo intorno agli anni Trenta-Quaranta del XIV secolo. Informata da un'impostazione squisitamente lignagère, questa monumentale compilazione - nella quale trovano posto, in una veste largamente rimaneggiata, le chansons di Bovo d'Antona, Berta da li pè grandi, Karleto, Berta e Milon, Rolandin, Ogier le Danois e Machario - spicca nel panorama epico franco-italiano non solo per originalità, ma anche e soprattutto in virtù di una natura sfuggente e problematica. La Geste Francor pone infatti un cospicuo numero di difficoltà filologico-interpretative, che spaziano dalle componenti prosodiche, stilistiche e tematiche ai rapporti che essa intrattiene con le fonti perdute, giungendo infine alla singolare ambiguità della scripta, contraddistinta da un marcato ibridismo tra francese antico ed italiano. Allo studio di questi tre versanti - stile, tradizione e lingua - è dedicato il presente volume, nel quale, partendo dalle caratteristiche materiali del codice, ci si addentra progressivamente tra le maglie del testo per indagarne le strutture più profonde, con l'ambizione di restituire la Geste Francor e il ms. V13 al loro primitivo contesto storico-ricezionale e di delineare per questa via le strategie compilative e le competenze linguistiche dell'anonimo autore/rimaneggiatore.
