This paper investigates the seven English editions of Giovanni Botero’s Relationi Universali, produced by London merchant Robert Johnson in the context of the growing rivalry between Britain and Spain concerning international expansion, imperialism and trade. By examining each edition in its unique historical context, two important conclusions can be drawn. First, it becomes immediately clear that Johnson was doing much more than translating Botero; he was making a specific intervention in these debates, arguing for a British international presence to rival and curb that of the Spanish. Second, Johnson made elaborate changes to Botero’s work in order to present his case, and as such to treat these texts as translations of the Relationi, as many historians have done, obscures their rich contextual history.

Nicholson reveals their everyday world set out in early 14th-century records of the Templars’ estates. These records show us how the Templars operated, the men and women who worked for them on their lands and houses, their tenants and the people who owed them money. We can see what animals they kept, from warhorses to plough animals, with cattle, pigs and flocks of sheep. The accounts record fields of grain or hay, meadow and woodland, mills and fishponds. Drawing on these records, along with archaeological evidence and the Templars’ own regulations, Nicholson sets out to reconstruct how the Templars lived from day-to-day. The Everyday Life of the Templars: The Knight Templars at Home is a fascinating insight into the everyday lives of these pious men, who were not powerful nobles or great churchmen, yet held great influence in medieval Europe.

The Treaty of Amiens, which brought an end to almost a decade of Franco-British warfare in March 1802, has long been understood as a flawed attempt at peace making. The British government’s surrender of most of its wartime colonial acquisitions, combined with a failure to push for guarantees on the Continent, has been interpreted as a meek acquiescence in France’s domination over Western Europe. The recommencement of war in May 1803 simply seems to confirm the supposition that the treaty was fundamentally inadequate. This article questions that interpretation by examining Britain’s relations with and policies towards Europe, and above all towards the Netherlands, during the period of negotiation and subsequent peace, 1800-3. It suggests that the British government did not conceive Amiens as the surrender of key interests, but as a base from which British influence could be reasserted.
