This paper profiles multidisciplinary team activity (MDT) in a typical teaching hospital setting and reports on a survey conducted among the teams to establish the information needs and constraints which affect their interaction. Support for pre-meeting work and post-meeting responsibilities is considered important in enabling the interaction at team meetings to be effective. Acoustics in the meeting room have higher priority over visual displays, although both ‘hearing the discussion’ and ‘seeing images and colleagues’ is important at meetings. Issues of time include scheduling and timing and are difficult to manage, particularly when individual roles belong to several MDTs and span more than one hospital. The potential is identified for automatic processing of some decisions by simple algorithm, which potentially will allow for more time at meetings to discuss complex patient cases in more detail.

ABSTRACT

This study focuses on the deformation behaviour of organic materials under a drop case. A Golden Delicious
apple was chosen as the sample organic material. A three-dimensional (3D) scanner, high speed
camera and finite element method (FEM) simulations were utilised to investigate drop case deformation
events of the organic material. In total, 22 steps after impact were set up in the simulation by comparing
high speed camera screen steps. Maximum equivalent stress of 0.416 MPa and maximum contact force
(resultant normal force from rigid plane at impact) of 250.980 N were obtained from simulation results.
Visual investigations and simulation results relating to deformations observed under the drop case,
agreed well. This study contributes to further our understanding of fruit and vegetable damage/deformation
by using computer aided engineering applications.

An Analysis of Kath-khuni Architecture as a Sustainable Humane Habitat in Himachal Pradesh

Abstract

The publication of “Matra: Ways of Measuring Vernacular Built Forms of Himachal Pradesh” by SID Research Cell in 2008 is the culmination of three years of research and writing of fieldwork concerning ‘kath-khuni’ buildings by students, faculty and research scholars at School of Interior Design (SID), CEPT University, Ahmedabad. The vernacular architecture of the Sutlej valley, locally called ’Kath-khuni’ is constructed out of local deodar wood and slate stone and it is an example of an empirical seismic design in earthquake prone mountainous region of Himachal Pradesh.  This paper discusses the findings of our research as it supports the concept of humane eco-architecture. While ‘Kath-khuni’ architecture is demonstrated to be sustainable but at the same time it is vulnerable to social, political, environmental and inter-community forces. How can a comparison between the sustainability and the threat to continuity of ‘kath-khuni’ architecture be applied to similar situations in urban and regional sectors?

In 2009 we presented a paper at the EAD conference in Aberdeen, UK, that, recognising a growing impetus in supporting designers’ input into business ventures, called for a collaborative design and business education providing a new platform of communication and expertise. A module from the BA (Hons) in Global Business and Design Management at Regent’s College was used to explore this question. Two years on we have developed our initial premise into a more in-depth focus on the experiences and processes that our business students go through in order to explore new opportunities using design thinking. Business students often perceive this as making them very uncomfortable, however this is also the time where both strategic thinking and design thinking can come together to contribute to generation of new ideas.

The initial approach to the delivery of the module concentrated on providing students with a series of tools from both the business and design domains. However further investigation of the student learning experience showed that, to develop students ‘creative confidence’ (Kelly, 2010) it is important to focus much more on facilitating their journey and fostering their decision-making at those critical points within the zones of discomfort. Therefore, this paper considers how undergraduate business students can be better helped to create truly innovative and viable business opportunities in an era of multiplicity and open creativity.

The paper draws on roundtable sessions with design and business academic and professional community, interviews with students as well as experience gained from teaching the module in order to substantiate the analysis. The paper concludes with a consideration of the appropriateness of current teaching methods and the implications of providing students with a ‘route map’ to help them integrate, in a much more productive way, design and strategic thinking in order to respond to the ever changing user needs and business context.

This research project is a first-person, practice-led endeavour which contributes to the fields of both medical humanities and the sonic arts. Through a reflexive, auto-ethnographic process, employing a wide range of audio-visual methods, I set out to explore a range of possible creative strategies that might be available to the ‘artist in extremis’ – i.e. the artist working under conditions of illness, confinement, restriction or limited energy. This process was distilled down, over five years, to three conceptual vehicles in the form of vinyl records which sought to offer openings, strategies and responses to conditions of extreme limitation. 

From 2009-2014, the three vinyl record projects were developed by myself, an ex-broadcast filmmaker continuing to navigate a life under Chronic Fatigue Syndrome / Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (CFS-ME) since 1998. Each vinyl record project contains strategies across a given stratum of life of the ‘exhausted artist’. The project created a body of both methodological and practical outputs, aiming to bypass the exhaustion, poor cognition and pain associated with CFS-ME.

Through ‘triangulating’ a series of sonic projects, each of which was created in a ‘modular’ or ‘bricolage’ process, the resultant trilogy of interrelated 12” vinyl records created a kind of ‘cinema for the ears’. The recordings (with their sleevenotes and graphics) were subsequently published by both external record labels and also self-released via the University of the West of Scotland.

The Idioholism Vinyl Trilogy became an appropriate autoethnographic framework containing exercises towards a personal, ‘idio-holistic’ existence for a filmmaker who could no longer produce intensive film work. The expansive and attractive format of the 12” record, under the doctoral praxis, allowed for a more ‘modular’ approach and format than in formal filmmaking. As an ex-filmmaker who is now an exhausted artist, I postulate that a trilogy of vinyl records could hone and home the divergent media (i.e. soundtracks, spoken word, music, text, photography) – which, taken together, might have previously resulted in a complete film in my ‘past’ life.

Verhelderd wordt hoe Optimaliserend Onderwijs gelijkere onderwijskansen en minder schoolproblemen kan bevorderen bij vooral de risicoleerlingen. Landelijk onderwijsbeleid en schoolbesturen kunnen met deze informatie het risicovolle reguliere leerstofjaarsysteem transformeren in Optimaliserend Onderwijs voor elke leerling.

This research, conducted by the author when a Senior Researcher at Newcastle University, UK, was funded by a UK governance organisation to help them assess, integrate and improve their understanding of the governed population.

ABSTRACT: Governance organisations have been urged to develop more holistic evidence-based approaches with partners to better deal with issues affecting the governed population. This presupposes an understanding of the population, yet there has been little research work addressing how governance organisations come to understand their governed population, nor how this understanding can be improved upon within such organisations.

This case study examined in-depth how understanding of a governed population was developed within one UK local governance organisation and it explored how such understanding might be developed and improved through more holistic and evidence-based organisational learning within the organisation and its governance partnerships.

The research methodology involved placement within the governance organisation, participant observations on several projects and innovative initiatives, observations within, across, and outside the organisation, and also interviews with varied key stakeholders.

The study examined:

- stakeholder engagement and networks
- current and varied understandings of the population
- mechanisms actually used for developing understandings
- the influence of context on organisational learning

and analysed these to arrive at a recommendations to improve organisational understanding of the governed population.

In the case studied, significant strengths were found: including innovative past learning trials for development, extensive ongoing networking activities, and many varied and accumulating quantitative datasets available across partnerships.

However, entrenched organisational approaches and practices constrained the development of holistic evidence-based understanding, for instance: the absence of systematic maintained collective learning processes; weak recording and forgetting of understandings; methodological exclusion of stakeholders from the development of understanding; the relative neglect of qualitative data, explanations, investigations, interpretations, and reflexivity; and also implicit organisational acceptance of such limitations and low aspirations.

Nonetheless, untapped opportunities existed to enable change including: latent practitioner knowledge and innovative management champions, the desire for improvement and raised aspirations within learning networks, and the development potential of alterative learning approaches.

It was concluded that more holistic evidence-based understanding was possible, but required new learning approaches beyond those then in use in both local government or academia.   

Recommendations are made to utilise and develop improved organisational learning approaches trialed and reported in the case study.

It is argued that the case study findings, conclusions, and recommendations may be applicable to other similar local governance organisations and partnerships that seek to better understand local populations, services and interventions.

Kashmir was a pivotal point, through which the wealth, knowledge, and products of ancient India passed to the world although Islam and its enduring influence in Kashmir took root only in the 14th century. By the time of the Mughals the influence of Persian and Middle Eastern arts was considerable and is still evident in Kashmir's crafts. Kashmir was most famous for its intricately woven and embroidered shawls, which for centuries were a cornerstone of European fashion until the invention of Jacquard looms enabled the production of less expensive paisley shawls. Thirty thousand rural workers still weave and embroider Kashmiri shawls, which remain a status symbol in India. Another forty thousand weavers produce hand-woven fabrics, and the total output makes Kashmir one of India’s leading producers of handloom textiles. Men wear shawls with patterns expressed in tapestry weave over a twilled ground, mostly made of Pashmina, goat's wool.

The Corona Virus rapidly spread around the world like wildfire and grossly affected the realm of the academe. COVID-19 as it is commonly used has caused many schools to consider the option of conducting online-learning modality to make education move on despite the pandemic. However, there have been various of complaints from the learners about the holding of online classes and the Bicol College, Inc. students are not excluded. Therefore, the faculty and students, the researchers of this paper pursued this study to evaluate the challenges encountered by students in online learning amidst the global pandemic and recommended actions to minimize the problems. This paper used the qualitative-quantitative method to describe the challenges met by the learners in their online sessions despite the COVID-19 crisis and the non probability and purposive sapling technique to choose the participants that served as the respondents in this research. The researchers collaboratively conducted a survey and an interview with the third year English major students of Bicol College, Inc and gathered the data as basis of their offer of the possible results to solve the identified problems. Seventynine (79) challenges were identified and there were divided according to their categories, namely, Technological (32), Household (12), Environmental (13), and Personal (22). The team of researchers concluded that there numerous of challenges met by the learners as they engage in online learning, such as: poor internet connection, non-conducive surroundings, doing household chores, financial difficulties, mental/health dilemmas, among others, and these challenges were purposively categorized and comprehensively discussed.

We live in a hyper-competitive world, where whole industries either shift towards services or become obsolete due to new market entrants, technologies or even social practices. A world, where permanent interactions with customers, fast time-to-market, and the ability to innovate »right« (e.g. the right thing or value) are the key to corporate success. On that score the business sphere isn't getting tired of emphasizing the need for strategic innovation (which means »creating superior customer value«, business model innovations or even the disruption and creation of new markets).

This paper uncovers some of the often overlooked links of design (design thinking, design- driven innovation and service design) to strategic innovation through the lens of »customer value«. It will do so by ...

1) Disenchanting the big corporate rhetoric on above claims by showing that prevailing and too one-sided understandings of strategy and innovation, rather reinforce than escape old industry paradigms.

2) Examining designs still undervalued contributions to strategy-making by approaching business challenges with a user/value-centric and radical service logic.

3) Showing that every dimension of strategic innovation culminates in the concept of perceived user value and meaning, which gets reviewed in detail (dimensions, forms, proper- ties), especially with regards to constructing value propositions.

4) Arguing that the current service design and business model innovation discourses cannot be negotiated separately, as they may be good methodological complements.

So when speaking about the innovation of value for the customer, the paper argues, the above stated and seemingly separated fields intersect. Therefore their most apparent systemic connections and the facilitation of value creation by design are outlined and discussed.

Academic focus on contemporary western tattooing is primarily from the disciplinary perspectives of the sciences, economics, history, and anthropology. With few exceptions, attention is placed on the modified body and the recipient of the tattoo rather than the tattoo producer or the processes of production. Though tattooing is an important creative industry, the occupational role of the tattooist and the processes and development of practice is yet to receive academic investigation from a practice-centred perspective. This has led to understanding of tattooing that is either absent entirely, partially informed, or flawed, from a range of perspectives. This AHRC/NPIF funded research is conducted in partnership with Sunderland (England) based tattoo studio Triplesix Studios, where the researcher has worked as a tattooist. A multi-method methodology was created with practice at its core combined with a contextual overview and autoethnography to contribute insight into tattoo production, the role of the producer and stylistic development that is largely absent in academia. It is suggested that the processes of tattoo production are inherently collaborative between tattooist and client. The tattooist’s role is proposed as both material (provision of medium) and non-material (provision of service). The material facet of the tattooist’s role in the provision of the medium is presented as contingent in accordance with the tattoo brief. Autoethnographic accounts of tattooing practice are utilised to generate insight into the non-material facet of the tattooist’s role in the provision of service. Stylistic development with tattooing as a medium through practical investigation that is informed by design training is then presented, illuminating factors that affect the approach of the tattooist. This is the first piece of research to be conducted using tattooing practice as a core methodological approach and demonstrates that understanding of contemporary western tattooing more broadly can be enriched as a result. Through the contribution of a novel methodology, frameworks and documentation offered by this research, it is proposed that tattooing may be better understood from the perspectives in which it has previously been studied and be introduced into broader arts and design scholarship.

Jamdani is a technique
mainly used for sari in its borders, body and pallav. Great skill is required. First the motif is drawn on graph paper, the size of the motif varies depending on the count, if the count is fine, the design on the graph paper is big, and if the count is coarse the design is small. Only new motifs are drawn on the graph paper. Traditional motifs are executed from memory.

Tangil
The muslins of, Dacca have been famous for centuries and have been considered the masterpieces of the Indian weavers in cotton. The Tangail woven today originated from these Daccai muslins.

As chair of a workshop in this year's national AI conference (AAAI/IAAI-22), I have been thinking about why its so important to draw attention to the ideas and innovations of a diverse community with under represented minorities. It has to do with the same importance as Multi-Disciplinary Research.  Multi disciplinary research can lead to large strategic pivots in the way we currently do things because information is combined in new ways yielding new perspectives and breakthrough results. However  most academic research is created by careers built from incremental progress and peer recognition within a specific area of expertise in their “field”.  Federal governments support research directions suggested to them by “leaders of the field”.  Like multi-disciplinary research, being an under represented minority or "outsider" in a field also often means it can feel like pushing boulders uphill to get your unusual way of seeing things heard or accepted.  To move into the future, we need to see new perspectives.  Many solutions are likely to come by lifting our heads from a singular outlook and building bridges across diverse concepts and ideas.    These may need to come from people who think, act and look differently from ourselves.  Can you handle it?  If you have you done multi-disciplinary research,  what was your experience?

The Definition, Categories and Constraints of the Hybrid Genre.

Sprinkled with quotes by such luminaries as Marcel Duchamp, Andre Breton, Victor Shklovsky, Luis Bunuel and Maya Deren, this polemical essay defined and assigned constraints and categories to differentiate the various manifestations and specificities of the emerging hybrid genre of videopoetry.  As the title suggests, it was also conceived as a provocation, an avant-gardist gesture to revivify a conversation between two competing signifying systems.

Its insistence on the presence of displayed or voiced text and the renunciation of illustration was a timely response to Ron Silliman’s call for vidpo (videopoetry) and vispo (visual poetry) to ‘define their  territory as distinct from the various other art forms that often influence & inform them.’ The “territory” defined by the Manifesto invited poets to seize the “means of production” – technology – for redefining the role of poetry in the 21st century.

Convergence, the process of bringing together traditionally distinct disciplines for creative and innovative purposes in various aspects of life, is nowadays a sweeping reality in the job market, professional R&D organizations, and new majors and departments at prominent universities around the globe. Educational institutions of all levels should follow suit, including K-12 general education. Differential convergence is hereby proposed with five modalities that can be accommodated in any educational system, like in any non-educational sector, including traditional discipline-based systems. Modalities distinguished in terms of specific theoretical and practical criteria are, in increasing order of cohesiveness and productivity, pluridisciplinarity, multidisciplinarity, interdisciplinarity, crossdisciplinarity, and transdisciplinarity. These modalities, like discipline-based curricula, become particularly efficient when designed and implemented under systemic theoretical/pedagogical frameworks that consider the physical world around us, as well as the conceptual realm of our thoughts and academic disciplines, to consist of well-defined systems. Convergence in education is thus hereby advocated as systemic differential convergence education, with crossdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity to be gradually attained in secondary and tertiary education respectively.

This episode identifies different types of online resources including scholarly material available online through libraries, and highlights copyright considerations for using existing material from the Internet in your teaching. It also discusses the benefits of Open Educational Resources (OER), where teachers can freely access and contribute to a wide range of learning and teaching resources from institutions around the world.

Primeramente se presenta el triángulo como una estructura sólida e ideal para fundamentar la serie del Tlahuitlayolleohuilli, la cual coincide con la estructura de la Ciudad de Uxmal. A partir de esta reflexión se presenta esta solides en el ‘Triángulo de Pascal’ la cual es una estructura fundamentada en el principio de Fibonacci.

Posteriormente se hace un análisis sobre la importancia de la simetría del tiempo en la rueda del Tlahuitlayolleohuilli y a partir de esta simetría se establece una gran coincidencia con las estaciones del planeta Tierra. De esta manera se vincula la serie con el movimiento de traslación del planeta Tierra y se explica cómo a través de este movimiento se puede comprobar la serie incluso análoga a la inclinación del planeta y por tanto coincidente con las estaciones temporales de cada año sideral.

Haciéndose una reflexión sobre el tiempo de traslación se comprueba la posición de las Parcas del tiempo asignadas a la dirección del planeta. Se comprueba que la rueda contiene en sí al sistema completo y que esta cualidad convierte al planeta Tierra en un organismo consciente de todo el sistema entero.

Al coincidir en esta revelación es que continuamos en la búsqueda de coincidencias con el registro del tiempo en las culturas de Mesoamérica. Para este efecto se analiza el calendario de dieciocho meses de veinte días y el pequeño mes de cinco días aciagos. Posteriormente se hace un análisis del tiempo de los días divididos en dieciséis horas de noventa minutos cada una y se establece ahora una coincidencia entre el Tlahuitlayolleohuilli y el reloj del movimiento de rotación del planeta.

Finalmente se hace una reflexión sobre los distintos diseños de relojes que podrían servir para establecer una nueva manera de contar el tiempo de nuestro planeta. Entonces vemos que el Tlahuitlayolleohuilli es una herramienta muy útil para medir el tiempo en los movimientos de rotación y de traslación del planeta Tierra; uno de los trabajos más importantes que hasta ahora he realizado en cuanto al empalme del sistema del Tlahuitlayolleohuilli y el comportamiento real del sistema de tiempo y espacio en nuestro planeta.

The traditions of Indian culture on the other hand are beautiful but their urban and modern interpretations have been devoid of the exquisite qualities that the Eames’s saw in the “Lota” that symbolised for them the elegance of Indian design as it had evolved over the ages. This serious absence of the use of Design as a critical discipline that supports the development agenda of a nation struggling to find a foothold in a global marketplace is truly appalling. I propose the term “Designification” as a counterpoint, and call for a serious use of design as a tool and a strategy for the development of all sectors of the Indian economy particularly since it is so sorely missing from the nations policy frameworks in almost all of these sectors of the economy, quite unlike the prominent position given to the fields of Science, Technology, Management and to some limited extent, the field of Art.

There is a pressing need for the “Designification” of our economy through a rapidly expanded use of design in almost 230 sectors of the Indian economy. The means to achieve this is limited by the current framework of Institutions that can provide the human resources, the research initiatives and the sustained knowledge resources that are needed to support this massive but achievable task. Design in India is sorely under invested in and much change is needed to mobilise the power of design for the development of so many sectors in need. The current levels of investments in design are at appallingly low levels when compared to the investments being made in science, technology and management institutions in the past and as a continuing activity today. It is argued that the such investments made in the past have failed to solve the critical need of creating the required innovations and while a number of technological innovations have resulted from these investments very little of this has been translated into useable products and services primarily because there has been a corresponding lack of investments in design.

Contemporary western tattooing can be understood as transactional in nature, requiring a paying client to utilize the services of a professional practitioner, in the production of a tattoo outcome. The growing tattoo marketplace results in a variety of clientele, with practitioners utilizing the medium in a range of ways. Much of the academic literature focuses on the tattoo outcome and its significance from the perspective of the client, with limited attention paid to tattoo production, from the perspective of the practitioner. Drawing from my professional tattooing practice, this chapter presents the processes of tattoo production as inherently collaborative between practitioner and patron. A framework for understanding the shifting degree of authorial input of the tattooist is proposed, highlighting that collaboration remains consistently present. By better understanding the collaborative nature of practice, a more informed discourse surrounding how tattoos can be “read” may emerge.

Multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) are conventionally recommended in mental health
care literature as an important way to offer holistic treatment provision to patients. This
study aims to explore multidisciplinary teamwork in contemporary mental health
settings, particularly what aids and hinders the process of multidisciplinary teamworking,
and the social work contribution in such teams. In order to attain an in-depth
exploration of these phenomena, a single case study design was employed. Within this
design, data were generated through semi-structured interviews and structured
observation of a mental health MDT in Ireland. These data were analysed using
interpretative phenomenological analysis. The research highlights how the concept of
mental illness is contested within this MDT, with the medical model dominant within
an environment of fluid working arrangements. Professional role blurring and
stereotyping were found to impact the division of labour on this team, with role
negotiation found to be an integral part of retaining a professional’s practice identity.
This research raises concerns for social work’s capacity to function within mental
health MDTs in Ireland, and highlights ways in which social work educators might
respond in order to empower Irish social workers to meet the challenges of mental
health multidisciplinary teamworking.

Switching from the function-object to the speculative-object transforms the meaning of the object, in so far as it is no longer a passive element of the discourse, but the triggering actor of an embodied reflexive process. In this perspective, the object transforms itself, from a functioning commodity to an open minded "thing" full of meaning. (Bodei, 2009). Understanding it as a device of thought, the speculative-object, becomes the narrating subject for a cultural reflection on humankind and it definitively changes its ontological status. (Harman, 2018). It imposes itself as a cognitive trigger of emancipation compared to a predeterminated thought, toward a deconstructive logic that does not give absolute solutions. In this context, the designer transforms himself from the one who solves problems (problem solver) to the one who identifies problems (problem-finder), through an investigative approach oriented towards evolving scenarios. Speculative objects therefore connect subject and thought and the more they exhort a disruptive vision, the more they demonstrate their intrinsic capacity to produce change.

Industrial Design scenario in India saw a tremendous transformation in the last three decades. The large spike in technology development and vibrant entrepreneurial business climate has seen disrupters driving the need for Industrial Design. Industries are now ready to invest in design. Clients now understand the importance of research, usability, and innovation. Every step of the design process is being followed to a large extend. Design is now accepted here as a thought than merely a skill. The size of a typical design project has grown multifold. Product development cycles have reduced and project deadlines have halved. And the projects are more and more systemic. Industrial Designers are today sought to deliver solutions to platforms, critical red ocean challenges, and future scenarios. There is a growing sense of dissatisfaction among the industries concerning the skills and capabilities of the upcoming graduates of the design schools. Lack of practical knowledge among these fresh graduates is the main concern of the industries. The transition for these young design graduates, from their academics to professional life is still 4-5 years. The small and medium scale industries, the main source of employment for the industrial design graduates in India, prefer performers from the word go. The design here is a high-speed creative thought process, and it can be learned only through hard work. Design institutes need to revise and update its curriculum to meet with these increasing and changing expectations of the new-age digital and innovation economy. Designers are now expected to bring in some innovation or technological change in their projects. Sharper understanding of new materials, technology, shop floor based processes as well as business concepts are now critical to Industrial Design. And with the large portion of the product development process being digital, intense knowledge of the digital development phase is essential to project execution. UI, UX, Service Design, Experience Design, are the areas of demand and popular career options for industrial design students. With the emphasis now on elements and process of design, a deeper understanding of design research is crucial for these budding industrial designers.

Abstract: The dissertation attempts to historicize the invention of the modern notion of "gambling" from the end of the 19thcentury to mid 20thcentury. The text tries to articulate the most frequent themes related to the questioning of games that speculate with the odds, around two theoretical axes (objectification and subjectification). Ramdomly connected by the connective AND, the thematic nodules emerge from an analysis of some social and cultural flows: the process of civilizing habits and costumes; the search for intensity in the economy of emotions; the adjuration of the odds in the process of rationalization of culture; the denial of the expenditures by the bourgeois economic moral,; the criminalization and control of popular playful practices; the renitency of nonproductive life and of the dissipating excesses; the internalization of time schedule and the appearance of leisure as hygienic use of free time; the lines of flight of the game as transcendence from everyday life in a disciplined society for the capitalism of production

This paper reports on the author’s ongoing Arts and Humanities Research Council’s (AHRC) Design Research Fellowship that aims to explore how design can contribute to the design and development of a range of enhanced products, services, and systems for people living with dementia. The fellowship, undertaken in collaboration with Alzheimer Scotland, adopts a range of disruptive design interventions for breaking the cycle of well-formed opinions, strategies, mindsets, and ways-of-doing, that tend to remain unchallenged in the health and social care of people living with dementia. Disruptive design is an approach that the author has developed over several years in conjunction with other members of the Design Disruption Group (Rodgers et al, 2013; Rodgers and Tennant, 2012). The key aims of this work are to develop a series of disruptive design interventions (e.g. products, systems, services) that will help change the perception of dementia by showing people with dementia can offer much to UK society after diagnosis. Also, the designed interventions will help reconnect people recently diagnosed with dementia to build their self-esteem, identity and dignity and help keep the person with dementia connected to their community, thus delaying the need for formal support and avoid the need for crisis responses. The paper reports on an initial intervention where the author has worked collaboratively with people diagnosed with dementia across Scotland in the co-design and co-production of a “live project” – a new signature tartan for Alzheimer Scotland.

This report analyzes how the public can be effectively engaged in democratic decision-making and implementation of technically complex transportation policies. Its contribution is to compile and analyze strategies for enhancing public engagement specifically in transportation planning and policy via a review of the literature, identification of key design choices in organizing public engagement, a case study, and recommendations for further research. It incorporates the following sections:

- Highlights from existing knowledge about the benefits, purposes, and challenges of public engagement.

- An assessment of the state of public engagement in transportation and an evaluation of participatory designs
currently being used in the sector.

- A framework that we suggest transportation policy-makers utilize in deciding how to design public engagement
processes.

- Description and analysis of two cases of participatory transportation planning efforts in Grand Rapids,
Michigan.

- Recommendations for further research and proposals for how to engage the public in several current transportation policy issues in Minnesota.
