In this episode we look at two different types of online learning environments: a centralised Learning Management System (LMS) and free, open access social media. We discuss the benefits of each and highlight some important issues that need to be considered when using each of them.

This episode aims to give you an introduction to the Learning to Teach Online project, define its aims, and explains how you can use these resources to help you get started with online teaching, or improve your existing practice. Web 2.0 tools can be useful for any situation where discussion and content sharing is desired, and where accessing current information in certain topic areas can be advantageous for learning. This case study examines how and why Lubna Alam from the University of Canberra used the Moodle Learning Management System (LMS) as a central hub that both provided her students with easy access to the class blogs, wiki and Twitter, and a place where information from the different technologies was amalgamated. The integration of web 2.0 technologies into the learning process is examined, highlighting how this can improve student engagement, communication and collaboration.

Если десять лет назад ещё можно было сетовать на бедность специализированных исторических электронных ресурсов, то сегодня речь уже идёт о правилах отбора, умении найти необходимое и отделить «зёрна» от «плевел» . Разнообразие существующих сегодня во Всемирной паутине оцифрованных архивов, электронных библиотек и научных справочников ставит серьезный вопрос об их полноценном использовании в преподавании. Более того, если для самостоятельного исследования только оцифрованных исторических источников и литературы может не хватить, то для задач обучения – их в избытке. Раз так, то необходимо сформулировать принципы, на основе которых получится мобилизовать информационные богатства, уже сейчас доступные онлайн. В данной статье рассмотрены вопросы отношения учащих и учащихся к разнообразным электронным ресурсам исторической тематики, а также предложены способы их включения в интерактивные формы преподавания истории.

The pervasive use of Internet and ICT (information and communication technology) in many learning and research settings has greatly enhanced the phenomenal growth of a wide array of digital applications and utilization to expand significantly throughout the chain of eLTR (e-learning, e-teaching, and e-research) arenas. The DL (digital library) primarily benefited the most from the powerful capabilities of the Web to enhance friendly search and retrieval across multidisciplinary domains to promote e-information dissemination within networked environment. Concomitantly, scholarly use of Internet has facilitated the Web-based research (e-research), which furnished a platform for developing innovative research practices, modelling, simulation, and quality test within virtual laboratory environment. Should the DL view e-research as a new domain of information service? Many studies on using the Web for scholarly research have provided strong evidence to consider e-research as a new challenging domain for DL services, since the DLs have become more obligated to answer the growing information needs of the e-research community over 24×7. Integrating DL resources with e-research process has therefore, become, a highly urgent necessity in e-learning environment. The knowledge economy requires that social science researchers start questioning the type of knowledge
they are producing and the type of methods they are using to produce this knowledge. This chapter
explains how the knowledge economy is linked to creativity, innovation, and qualitative research. This
chapter aims specifically to highlight the need and importance of innovative research methodologies in
a knowledge economy. Emerging innovative qualitative research methodologies in social sciences are
briefly identified, and arguments for and against methodological innovation are explored. The stages
of creativity and phases of innovation are highlighted in a research environment to show social science
researchers that innovative research methodologies can be generated and that barriers to creativity and
innovation can be overcome using various techniques. After reading this chapter, the reader will be able
to apply creativity and innovation to identify new and novel ways of undertaking qualitative research,
as well as being able to integrate innovate methodologies with existing methodologies.

While developing effective teamwork and collaboration skills are considered important to the learning process, many students find group work challenging and difficult. In this episode we explore how Internet technologies can improve the collaborative process within online teamwork, and offer some useful strategies for facilitation and assessment.

Knowing which technology to use for your online teaching can be difficult and sometimes overwhelming. This episode highlights issues you should keep in mind when making this decision. These include the importance of considering pedagogy before technology, the benefits of starting with something simple, and the need to provide adequate technical support and training for your students. To help you get started, it also includes links to a matrix guide, which outlines the educational application of different technologies in more detail.

This case study aims to describe how a blog was used in one particular teaching context to promote peer- to-peer interaction, feedback and discussion. While the case study does examine one particular teaching application of a blog, the principles discussed can just as easily be applied to any teaching situation where the ability for individuals to chronologically record a learning process, collate different learning resources such
as text, video and audio, and increased peer feedback or discussion between students is desired. This episode will examine the context, planning and teaching within the case study, and highlight any issues that were encountered, and benefits that make this type of online teaching worthwhile.

The reader of this debunking article will notice that the author does not write about what is basically wrong with China (a subject certainly worth dealing with), but about what is fundamentally amiss with THE STUDY of China, this being a subject of utmost, not only academic importance. In the author's view, it is time to take the study of China to a higher level, to go to the root of the matter, to consider China, indeed each and every country, to be a 'holon' (not: a 'pan'), a - what modern brain scientists call - 'dynamic functional connectivity'. Big, small or medium-sized, a country should be studied by professionals (political scientists, jurists, economists, linguists, sociologists, educationists, ecologists etc) prepared to work together (in a country-project) and well-informed about the latest developments of the behavioural and social sciences and the humanities. The logic behind this view must appeal to all those in favour of cross-disciplinary (as distinct from international) collaboration. The author hopes that readers having closely looked at the whole paper will ask themselves one question: how would this deeply troubled world look like if Western statesmen, politicians, and captains of industry were effectively advised on the policy to pursue towards China, Russia, or - lumping essentially different countries such as Egypt, Iran, Israel, Saudi Arabia and Turkey together - the Middle East by COLLABORATING SCIENTISTS of the kind profiled in the paper?!  Tenured professors of China/country studies, used to carve their material object (explanandum) up into parts the dilettante explanations of which they cannot but leave to their students/listeners to make chocolate out of them, seem to be opposing the dangerous, life-changing idea here advanced. They do not want their comfortable boat being rocked, seeing the argument for truly interdisciplinary China/country-research as threatening to their privileged position rather than as providing a great opportunity for them to do some soul-searching and to rethink thoroughly the way they have been working. Perhaps the author should resign himself to this situation and accept that man wants novelty but cannnot take, and gets disturbed by, too much of it.

Engaging students in online learning is critical for success. In this episode, we examine strategies for improving engagement and motivation in online learning environments. Issues such as effective facilitation, creating learning communities, strategies for motivating students, and encouraging and sustaining participation are discussed from a variety of viewpoints.

This case study aims to give you a basic understanding of the website Flickr, and how it was used to teach photography in a blended (face-to-face and online) class. It discusses the benefits of using an online community for submitting, organising and giving feedback on images, and the impact on student learning. Key issues surrounding pedagogic planning and teaching with Flickr that were encountered in this context of the case study will also be examined, highlighting the benefits and potential issues of adopting this approach.

En la enseñanza de lenguas y en la investigación lingüística, como en todas las actividades académicas, hoy en día resulta imprescindible localizar, organizar y compartir materiales en línea, una actividad que se puede llegar a convertir en un obstáculo metodológico y una pérdida de tiempo. Esta “sobrecarga informativa” se puede gestionar con la ayuda de unas aplicaciones denominadas gestores de marcadores sociales, cuyos orígenes, tipos y usos se analizan en este trabajo, siempre a partir de la experiencia de la autora en clases de ELE, de grado y de máster.

In this heavily annotated article the provocative thesis is submitted that there is something fundamentally wrong with Western Sinology, or 'Chinakunde', or 'Zhongguoxue' (as distinct from 'Hanxue', which is a kind of old-fashioned philology). 'China experts' either pretend to be knowledgeable about everything related to China, in which case they cannot be taken seriously, or - eventually - admit not to be scientific all-rounders with respect to the country, in which case they cannot be called 'China experts'. The author, who graduated in Sinology from Leyden University and in economics from Erasmus University Rotterdam, not only believes that the study of China has to be taken to a higher level (a belief he expects few tenured professors of Chinese Studies/History will share); he also explains how this long overdue task can be accomplished. Sinologists should take the complexity turn. They should treat China as a 'Ganzheit' (not: 'Gesamtheit'), as a territory-bound, history-moulded and culture-soaked totality of identifiable yet interdependent (f)actors, as a whole intimately interconnected with its numerous parts, as a hypercomplex system of complex, adaptive and non-linear systems of political, military, legal, economic, financial, social, medical, educational, artistic or other nature. Firmly distancing itself from multidisciplinary research (which in practice is a matter of juxta- rather than composition), the new study of China requires a well-thought-out, balanced division of labour. Close collaboration with ICT-driven, China-oriented experts in the natural, social and human sciences willing to co-operate with each other is a sine qua non for comprehending the country that seems to be moving to the centre stage of world politics. The study of China should be mile-wide and mile-deep. The heyday of Sinology is yet to come!
An earlier version of this highly critical but undeniably constructive paper was rejected out of hand by the editors of leading 'Chinese/Asian Studies' journals. The author claims to have reason to suspect them (and other so-called China experts) of being 'bought by China'!

This case study examines the use of simple audio podcasts in a fully online distance education class, as part of the DUCKLING research project conducted by the Beyond Distance Research Alliance at the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom. It discusses the benefits of using podcasts as part of an integrated online learning strategy in a distance learning context, and gives an overview of how podcasts were used to introduce concepts, provide support for assignments, and to give students direct feedback on their work.

This episode will highlight several strategies to help you manage online discussions more effectively, and make them more beneficial for your students.

This episode identifies different types of online resources including scholarly material available online through libraries, and highlights copyright considerations for using existing material from the Internet in your teaching. It also discusses the benefits of Open Educational Resources (OER), where teachers can freely access and contribute to a wide range of learning and teaching resources from institutions around the world.

This study investigates the contemporary role of electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) in business exchanges through buyers' signaling of observable and unobservable supplier characteristics on the Alibaba e-commerce platform. Utilizing a qualitative pre-study of 20 interviews (five buyer-supplier dyads with two interviews per firm) and more than 8,000 buyer reviews on Alibaba, we identify characteristic patterns of this type of B2B eWOM. Signaling Theory and Social Exchange Theory underpin the empirical investigation. To enable further conceptualization, the study distinguishes between online B2B reviews based on the extent to which they are controlled by organizational partners. Unlike some other forms of B2B reviews, reviews on Alibaba are uncontrolled and comprise a form of eWOM. Findings indicate that the relational patterns of B2B eWOM shared on Alibaba can be aggregated into three categories: human touch, responsiveness, and resilience. Besides these new categories, the importance of product/service quality has been confirmed. Through Alibaba reviews, buyers' signals are sent not only to suppliers as feedback, but also to other prospective buyers to influence their purchase decisions. Our study aims to contribute to the B2B literature on eWOM and signaling in business relationships. By showing that human touch occurs even in online-only buyer-supplier relationships, the study provides evidence that bonding, the development of mutuality, and relationship intimacy in buyer-supplier relationships does not always require in-person contact. Managerial implications are offered with a focus on the signaling of unobservable qualities, such as human touch, with the help of B2B eWOM.

This case study examines the use of eBooks and eReaders as an extension of the usual Blackboard Learning Management System (LMS). This initiative was undertaken as part of the DUCKLING research project (Delivering University Curricula: Knowledge, Learning and Innovation Gains) conducted by the Beyond Distance Research Alliance at the University of Leicester in the UK. While the context of this study involves distance students, using electronic books can have applications in any discipline where students are required to undertake a significant amount of reading. This case study discusses some advantages of using eBooks, and outlines the process involved in creating and uploading them to an eReader device.

In this paper the thesis is submitted that the study of China (indeed of each and every country) is wrongheaded in its methodology and should be fundamentally redesigned. Readers are kindly requested to notice that the author distinguishes between two kinds of 'China experts': 1) Those (tacitly) claiming to be knowledgeable about everything related to China, a - thank God - dying but by no means extinct breed of scholars mainly active in Europe; and 2) Those not CLAIMING to be China experts (that is, those eventually admitting not to be scientific all-rounders with respect to the country) but - and herein lies the crux of the matter -  not shying away from entering, without announcement or permission, a domain outside their own field of expertise, SHOULD THEY HAVE ONE! Many American and other 'China experts' can be blamed for this. 'China expert' is a misnomer, grossly (and dangerously) misleading politicians, captains of industry and the general public, as the author argues at length in the paper, which sums up a great deal of his research over the last few years. Scientists (e.g. demographers, economists, sociologists, psychologists, political scientists, jurists, linguists, literary theorists/critics and 'Kunst- und Kulturwissenschaftler') may have research interest in a particular, their discipline related aspect of China; they can never be justifiably called 'China experts'. Throughout the article, particularly in the text under the subheading Scientific Collaboration, the necessity (and possibility!) of academic teamwork is emphasised, that is to say, the need for interdisciplinary (as distinct from multidisciplinary) research of China. The political, legal, military, economic, financial, social, educational, ecological, religious and other kindred affairs of China are inextricably intertwined, forming together a complex system of complex systems. Consequently, the country should be studied (as it has never been done!) by specialists closely working together and being aware of the historical as well as the geographical dimension of their 'material objects' (explananda). Briefly, the paper pleads for gaining EMPIRICALLY AND THEORETICALLY BASED knowledge of CHINA AS SUCH.

In this paper (last update)  the thesis is submitted that there is something fundamentally wrong with the  Western study of China (Zhōngguóxué, as distinct from Hànxué, which is nothing but a kind of old-fashioned philology aggrandised with quasi- if not pseudo-philosophy): ‘China experts’  either tacitly pretend  to be knowledgeable about everything related to China, in which case they cannot be taken seriously, or reluctantly admit not to be scientific all-rounders with respect to the country, in which case they cannot be called China experts. The author expects no tenured professor of Chinese Studies/History and none of his/her devotees to share this view. Having exposed the weakness, indeed the scandal, of the study of China as practised thus far, in Europe, the U.S.A. and elsewhere, he also points out the way future generations of China (not: Chinese) students should go. The fork in that road is two-pronged: translating or collaborating. 'CHINA ORIENTED EXPERTS FROM ALL DISCIPLINES, UNITE!' should be the battle cry, particularly at the time China seems to be moving to the centre stage of world politics, be it for better or worse.

Deciphering ancient and damaged documents is a complex investigative task that papyrologists routinely undertake to extract meaning from the script.
Perception and interpretation play an essential role.
In this paper, we present methods for transferring to the digital world some of the processes that experts draw upon when interpreting a text, with the ultimate aim of constructing an Interpretation Support System (ISS) for papyrologists.
Image-capture and image-processing approaches that reflect real-world perceptual processes have been implemented.
In addition, we propose an expansion of a previously built model of papyrological reading and transcription.
We make explicit some of the implicit processes involved in an interpretation effort, using an example where papyrologists developed hypotheses for the identification of a puzzling letter form.
Two distinct yet not mutually exclusive approaches to the interpretation task have been identified: the kinaesthetic/palaeographical strategy and the cruciverbalistic/philological strategy.
The ISS will have to facilitate both approaches.
Mechanisms triggering the emergence of working hypotheses of interpretation, which we call percepts, have also been pinpointed; they include skilled vision, scholarly expectations, aspect shifting and local-global oscillations.
Working hypotheses being triggered by such mechanisms can then be exposed as an explicit network of sourced percepts; these mechanisms also confer a qualitative well-foundedness to the percepts and hence help us to retrace and assess the rationale leading to a specific interpretation.

In this update, new material  is presented that supports the  author’s (as of yet not refuted) statement regarding the current state of ‘Chinakunde’ (‘Zhongguoxue’, as distinct from ‘Hanxue’, which is nothing but a kind of old-fashioned philology aggrandised with quasi- if not pseudo-philosophy). The opportunity has been taken to rephrase the passages that might be misunderstood. Readers of the article will notice that the criticism levelled at  the so-called China/country /area experts is also constructive: from page seven onwards (THE WAY AHEAD),  the sweet is added to the sour, so to speak.

When teaching larger classes, an online environment can provide many opportunities for increased student engagement, group work and self testing. In this case study Professor Alan Crosky, from the University of New South Wales,  explains how he uses a blended learning approach in his Engineering Materials and Chemistry course with 700 first year students. He highlights the importance of providing student orientation and support when first introducing an online component, and discusses the benefits of integrating online tutorials and resources, group work, peer assessment and self-testing into the course.

This chapter is concerned with questions of inclusion and participation in the scholarly use of technologies, with the changing alignments of agency and the nonhuman made possible in contemporary research practices. In particular it explores the use of databases in academic research and their consequences for the configuration and character of recent humanities and creative arts scholarship. What positions might databases assume in the production of knowledge? How have changes to the nature of data itself also changed databases and their roles? How do debates about databases implicate the practices of digital humanities and creative arts scholars? This chapter explores these questions in detail through two case studies that exemplify some of the ways in which digital research technologies might bear on the practices of contemporary research scholarship—and vice versa.

This case study aims to show how simple and powerful using audio feedback can be. While the context of this case study is in art and design, the use of audio files for giving students feedback is applicable to any discipline or almost any type of student work, even in 100% face-to-face classes. This case study will examine some of the motivations for adopting the use of audio feedback, the benefits for students and teachers, and some key considerations to keep in mind.

We examine some of the different license terms and combinations, and offer some insights into which might be better suited for educational purposes. We also discuss how to generate your own creative commons license and what to do when your work is not attributed by others.

El presente trabajo explora los avances realizados en la gestión de datos científicos y su publicación en Acceso Abierto, en el contexto de la iniciativa Plataforma Interactiva de Investigación para las Ciencias Sociales (PLIICS), considerando además enfoques innovadores detectados en el plano internacional. Se analiza en primer lugar experiencias de la Prueba Piloto PLIICS, divididas en una primera etapa de prueba y la segunda de maduración. En segundo lugar, se presentan tendencias innovadoras internacionales, centradas en la aplicación de tecnologías de la información y la comunicación (TIC) en la investigación científica, y en la influencia del movimiento Open Source. Estos aportes conceptuales, junto con las experiencias realizadas, permiten identificar dos enfoques para publicar datos científicos, y sugerir cómo éstos podrían influir en futuros lineamientos para la gestión de datos científicos nacionales.

This case study examines the use of online asynchronous discussions as part of a large professional practice class for primary mathematics teachers. Online forums within Blackboard are used to host discussions about video lectures, support assessments and to enable students to ask questions and receive advice about content. The realities of managing large scale online discussions are discussed, along with strategies for effective facilitation.

Databases are vulnerable. Public statements by Target, Home Depot, and Anthem following their extremely advertised data breaches are each uniform and succinct on how their breaches unfolded: unauthorized access to those systems that ultimately led to the extraction of sensitive information. A comprehensive strategy to secure a database is over data security. Usually, security events will be related to the later action: illegitimate access to data confidentiality damage, injury to the integrity of knowledge, and loss of data accessibility (Discover). Loss of privacy of data, creating them accessible to others without a right of access is not visible within the database and does not need changes deductible database. This paper addresses these events to confirm database security.

New digital and web-based technologies are spurring rapid and radical changes across all media industries. These newer models take advantage of the infinite reproducibility of digital media at zero marginal cost. There is an argument to be made that the sort of changes we have seen in other industries will be forced upon higher education, either as the result of external economic factors (the need to be more efficient, responsive, etc.) or by a need to stay relevant to the so-called ‘net generation’ of students (Prensky, 2001; Oblinger & Oblinger, 2005; Tapscott & Williams, 2010).

This article discusses the impact of digital technologies on each of Boyer’s dimensions of scholarship: discovery, integration, application and teaching. In each case the use of new technologies brings with it the possibility of new, more open ways of working, although this is not inevitable. The implications of the adoption of new technologies on scholarship are then discussed

Este artículo muestra las principales bases de datos donde los investigadores pueden localizar los trabajos académicos relacionados con cualquier aspecto del ELE. Nos encontramos en un momento en el que está creciendo la producción científica en esta área de especialización, pero, paralelamente, no resulta fácil localizar en las referencias. Se verá que esta dificultad radica, por una parte, en el desconocimiento por parte de los investigadores de las diferentes bases de datos a las que pueden acudir y, por otra, en la falta de unidad en las etiquetas o palabras clave que sirven para localizar las referencias.

Uso de TIC en investigación cualitativa: discusión y tendencias en la literatura

Este artículo es una revisión temática sobre la discusión del uso de TIC en la investigación cualitativa, resultado de la primera fase de un trabajo más amplio cuyo objetivo fue caracterizar los usos de TIC en las prácticas investigativas de docentes – investigadores y su relación con los procesos de formación investigativa en la Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana (UPB) de Medellín, Colombia. Inicialmente se hizo una caracterización cuantitativa de una base de 263 artículos. Se utilizaron descriptores en español e inglés y distintas combinaciones de los mismos: qualitative research, e-research, research computing, e-social science, technology, QDA, Caqdas, software computing, ICT use, research process, data analysis, uso de TIC, investigación cualitativa, tecnologías, proceso de investigación, análisis de datos. La captura de los datos se realizó con el apoyo de software para gestión bibliográfica (Zotero y EndNote) y de distintas bases de datos como Ebsco, Science Direct y Jstor. A partir de esta sistematización se seleccionaron 166 artículos en los cuales se analizó el contenido para establecer las temáticas correspondientes a procesos investigativos y el uso de software asociado a ellas. Así se pudieron confirmar algunas tendencias ya enunciadas en la literatura y en otros casos, observar prácticas emergentes, asuntos de los que se muestra aquí una discusión vigente para entender los procesos de apropiación de TIC en la producción de conocimiento.

This episode highlights some important issues regarding managing your teaching time online. It examines some of the benefits and potential pitfalls of online teaching, and offers some practical tips and suggestions on how teachers can make their time teaching online more effective and productive.

L'evento prevede anche la presentazione e discussione di buone pratiche di innovazione didattica sperimentate presso l’Ateneo fiorentino, con una particolare attenzione al progetto DIDeL (Didattica in eLearning).

In the changing environment of the 21st century, universities should develop very innovative ecosystems by doing right investments on human capital, research and development, buildings, laboratories, dorms, and other facilities on the campus while decreasing their costs and expenses in order to increase scientific and technological oriented innovations and outputs. For that reason, most of them are looking toward Big Data Management (BDM), which is a very new and dynamic subject to conduct properly and to make right decisions at the universities.Data analytics and data mining have increased and attracted the attention of most of the leaders, managers, administrators, researchers, and even educators who try to make massive data-related investments and decisions. More importantly, since the funding of higher education has become important issues for most of the governments and higher education management, the importance of BDM will increase in higher education much more than ever before. However, not all the universities are so successful in managing their small or medium-sized data.In this research, how universities are investing by improving their data was analyzed in three different universities in Istanbul.More strategically, how data analytics and mining can make changes and transformation higher education institutions by investing right resources under the promise of Big Data Management was critically studied. In this study, the impacts of big data mining and management on higher education institutions’ sustainable funding, financing, planning, success, research and development, and innovation were critically studied. By taking into account the perceptions and the experiences of the experienced experts (6), faculty members (12), managers (4), and technical people (12), who were charged in using data analytics and mining at two state and one private universities, the investment of the universities had analyzed in order to understand critically the effects of the BDM. In the study, the phenomenological analysis was used by asking thirty-one research questions in the semi-structured interviews. While taking into account the observations of the researchers, the collected data of this study were systematically studied in data analysis software-program NVivo 10. The results showed that a few number of the investments had correctly done by using data mining and data analysis. As the participants had mentioned that the data would not have done anything if the higher education management had not taken into account and applied.So, according to the participants (75%), the university management understanding and policies should be changed in order to take in consideration the results of the big data.Even though a great amount of data had produced through the systems of the universities, the analysis, the segmentation, and the selected attention of the data had become dependent on the higher education management.The participants (28%), who were active in planning, funding, and investing, agreed that the investments done according to the results of the big data had better educational, financial, socio-economic, cultural, technological,environmental, and even individual benefits and outcomes. In conclusion, although a little data mining and analysis has properly used in making right investments, the universities are highly convinced on the positive effects of the BDM in their short-term and long-term investments in order to increase their impacts.

The web and the digital devices indisputably have become integral components of the e-library services as they provide smarter and convenient ways of making research information easily accessible and retrievable at a real-time. This survey seeks to shed light over the newly introduced e-research
consultations as a new genre of expert library service to support postgraduate studies and research projects. We diagnosed the potential factors responsible for query processing prior to suggesting a model for improving the process of answering research inquiries and consultations. Analysis of the research queries and consultations, received via various routes of communication, revealed that the research desk can conveniently handle a wide range of information needs, such as encompassing short-answer factual information and guidance about search strategy, and offering in-depth research consultations and expert assistance in tracking down hard-to-find information. It can formulate advanced search strategies, providing guidance in using specific library e-resources and e-services, and assisting in thesis writing. The study argues that as the research devoted library moved its user centred research reference services into web-based, the research librarian should have to adjust to the new e-research paradigm and should excel in answering the needs of research students and faculty.
