Although a majority of countries in the Middle East show intermediate or high endemicity of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, which clearly poses a serious public health problem in the region, the situation in the Republic of Syria remains unclear. The aim of this study is to determine the hepatitis B vaccination status, to assess the number of vaccinations administered, and to estimate the annual incidence of needlestick injuries (NSIs) among healthcare workers (HCWs) in Aleppo University hospitals. A cross-sectional design with a survey questionnaire was used for exploring details of NSIs during 2008, hepatitis B vaccination status, and HBV infection among a random stratified sample of HCWs in three tertiary hospitals in Aleppo (n = 321). Two hundred and forty-six (76.6%) HCWs had sustained at least one NSI during 2008. Nine (2.8%) had HBV chronic infection and 75 HCWs (23.4%) were never vaccinated. Anesthesiology technicians had the greatest exposure risk when compared to office workers [OR = 16,95% CI (2.55-100), P < 0.01], doctors [OR = 10,95% CI (2.1 47.57), P < 0.01], and nurses [OR = 6.75,95% CI (1.56-29.03), P = 0.01]. HCWs under 25 and between the age of 25 and 35 years were at increased risk for NSI when compared to HCWs older than 45 years [OR = 3.12,95% CI (1.19-8.19), P = 0.02] and [OR = 3.05,95% CI (1.42-6.57), P < 0.01], respectively. HCWs at Aleppo University hospitals are frequently exposed to blood-borne infections. Precautions and protection from NSIs are important in preventing infection of HCWs. Education about the transmission of blood-borne infections, vaccination, and post-exposure prophylaxis must be implemented and strictly monitored.

The article discusses the current risks of a limited nuclear war and its consequences for humanity. It presents a critical analysis of the difference between the strategy of global destructive warfare as a result of the classical use of standard nuclear weapons on the one hand and the new political-military plan of a limited, small-scale nuclear war (without global expansion) on the other. The paper clarifies the problems associated with the new US strategy documents that are advancing a line of argument in favour of a limited nuclear war in the context of conflicts of political, corporate and military-technical interests in the global capitalism. It also analyses the background to the current state, i.e. the history of strategies of the possible nuclear war and potential actors of this kind of threat. It draws attention to the current real danger of locally waged limited nuclear warfare and its possible escalation on a global scale.

This article fills a need in the entrepreneurship literature by investigating the finances of entrepreneurship centers throughout the world. Entrepreneurship center directors were surveyed (249 U.S. and 111 Global) about the various facets of their center’s finances. We received 174 responses for a 49% response rate (U.S. 49%, international 49%). We explore the financing of entrepreneurship centers and the relationship between U.S. and international centers. The results of this research project can be used as a benchmark for entrepreneurship center directors in understanding the financial challenges confronting their centers.

This dissertation aims to critically examine lecturers’ discursive statements in interviews and English Language Teaching (ELT) classroom practices in Indonesia, primarily in the teaching of Argumentative Writing (AW) and Cross Cultural Understanding (CCU) courses at two universities (Multi-Religious and Islamic University) in Java. 90 years ago – in October 1929 - the crash on Wall Street created chaos in the financial markets. The Great Crash of 1929 led to the Great Depression the longest period of unemployment and contraction in modern history. The market crash of 1929 is considered a unique, five sigma event, occurring only once-in–a-lifetime. Seventy nine years after the Great Crash of 1929 (GC), the financial markets collapsed again in the Global Financial Crisis of 2008 (GFC) and threatened the financial stability of the world like in 1929. Explanations for the causes of a market crash can range from over-indebtedness, asset bubbles, speculation to massive leverage in the system. Crises can have different forms ranging from classic hunger crises to modern forms of demand crises, corporate crises and financial market crises. While the causes of a hunger crisis is often the result of a series of poor harvest, the causes of a financial market crisis can be complex and are not always easy to identify. In this paper I focus on the worst financial market crisis in history the GC in the USA. It was argued that funds and short sellers were the culprits of the crisis, and that they benefited from it. This paper covers the speculators in the GC by analysing their role, their strategies and their returns. I introduce an analysis of the role of speculators in their function as either liquidity providers or liquidity takers. As far as the theory of speculation is concerned I use Minsky’s Financial Instability Hypothesis. The analysis shows that in a systematic crisis there are no winners and there is no place to hide.

At the end of the first decade of the 21st century, newspaper copy/sub-editing is undergoing a series of changes that may eventually have more impact than the technological transformations of the 20th century. This article assesses current challenges to the craft, using information from interviews with current and former copy editors and sub- editors in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and South Africa. It concludes that although there are differences across national boundaries and publication types, copy/subs desks are threatened by job losses, clustering, outsourcing, and failure to integrate print and Web work. Some of the changes threaten to de-skill editors in the manner that Braverman (1974) described. Others can be explained by the power of media routines as outlined by Shoemaker and Reese (1996).

This paper focuses on global diversity management, outlining its differences to single-nation diversity management and explains the unique features of both forms of diversity management. The single-nation diversity management debate is first unpacked in terms of the way it has been defined, contested and developed, in the mainstream literature. These elaborations then lead to a discussion of how global diversity management is different from its single-nation counterpart. Subsequently, a conceptual model of key influences on appropriation and development of a global diversity management approach is offered. This model is described with its key components. While the single-nation diversity management literature was driven by academic theory paving the way for policy and practice, global diversity management is an emergent academic concept, the substantive body of knowledge for which comes from practice.

The origin of the stock market in India dates back to the end of the 18th Century after the enactment of the companies Act in 1850 which introduced the feature of limited liability. The Native Share and Stock Brokers’ Association, now known as Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) was formed in Bombay 1875. This was followed by the formation of association /exchange in Ahmadabad (1894), Calcutta (1908) and Madras (1937). In order to promote the orderly development of the stock market the central government introduced a comprehensive legislation called the Securities Contracts (Regulation) Act, 1956. According to section 2(3) of this Act the stock exchange has been defined as “anybody of individuals whether incorporated or not, constituted for the purpose of assisting, regulating and controlling the business of buying, selling or dealing in securities”.
