Guitar Electric

This article offers a bird's-eye view of the evolution of guitar learning and pedagogy in the XX and XXI centuries, supported, and often propelled by emerging popular musical styles and new technologies. Specifically, the article discusses how learning to play guitar has evolved from formal teacher-student lessons in private and academic settings, to informal and self-guided forms of learning through books, magazines, and DVDs. Starting in the late 1990s, technological advancements and the diffusion of high-speed internet brought about technologies and social spaces that contributed to innovating guitar pedagogies and disrupting traditional approaches to teaching and learning the guitar. These technologies include, but are not limited to online archives and communities, social media, apps and software, subscription-based services, augmented reality, virtual worlds, and digital games. Es en el instrumento donde se da el uso y abuso específico,
o el rechazo explícito de diversas tecnologías, dependiendo
de su sonido particular, induciendo a la construcción de distinciones entre los géneros que conforman la música popular (Théberge, 2006). Dichas distinciones pueden deberse a
elementos tonales, rítmicos y melódicos, pero pareciera que
pocas veces se reflexiona o analiza el estilo musical desde los
sonidos que lo integran, el sonido como lo que representa en
sí, y el instrumento como el artefacto que da vida a dicho sonido. Todo ello delimitado por la tecnología y las capacidades
y habilidades físicas del intérprete; el sonido es el objetivo del
instrumento y del intérprete, en este caso la guitarra eléctrica
es un instrumento que se rige por leyes, por lo que todas están diseñada bajo cálculos específicos que permitan obtener
resultados idénticos, es decir, están diseñadas para que en afinación estándar la quinta cuerda siempre de una nota La. Los
intérpretes instrumentistas, en cambio, son todos diferentes
y es imposible que dos lleguen a tocar de forma idéntica, es
más, ni siquiera es posible que un mismo intérprete toque de
forma idéntica dos o más veces una misma pieza musical.

Desde una hermenéutica analógica (Beuchot, 2018), la
guitarra eléctrica es lo unívoco, mientras que el intérprete es
lo equívoco.
Es importante señalar que el público también es intérprete, porque hace su interpretación de lo que escucha, por ejemplo, el baile. El instrumentista también hace una interpretación de lo que escucha, ya sea de lo que va tocando él solo
o en conjunto, y de lo que escucha del público, como gritos,
aplausos, cantos, etcétera, pero lo que quizá marca la verdadera diferencia entre el intérprete instrumentista y el público, es
que el instrumentista debe saber con anticipación qué es lo
que va y cómo lo va a hacer. Es decir, el instrumentista es una
especie de actor, en el sentido que debe evocar las emociones
que quiere plasmar en el sonido, y debe poseer el conocimiento y la práctica necesaria de la técnica para poder hacerlo y
transmitirlo con la mayor naturalidad posible, con más razón
si se habla de improvisación.
Esto querría decir que el guitarrista, cuando se escucha,
evalúa el sonido resultante con el que se pensó previamente,
mientras que el público no vive esa primera experiencia que
anticipa al sonido, por ello, son expectadores, que no espectadores. Se entiende por espectadores quienes presencian un
espectáculo, mientras que expectadores es un término ficticio
que hace referencia a que el espectador en realidad está en
constante expectativa, pues tiene la esperanza de escuchar en
algún momento esa frase, ese riff, ese sonido distorsionado del
solo de guitarra eléctrica, principalmente bajo el contexto de
un concierto.

Entonces, si la guitarra eléctrica es unívoca, y el instrumentista y el público como intérpretes son lo equívoco, el
sonido distorsionado de la guitarra eléctrica, como el resultado de la acción conjunta entre lo unívoco con lo equívoco, es
lo analógico. Dicho de otra forma, el ruido está en la guitarra
eléctrica y el sonido en la mente de los intérpretes, por lo que
el sonido distorsionado es la media justa de la unión entre la
tecnología como ciencia exacta y la creatividad como abstracción de la mente humana, donde a través de la música ambas
partes tienen su lugar en un tercer sentido o forma de ser, ni
ruido ni sonido, un ruido-sonido, diría Russolo (1913), ambos
en un tercer contexto diferente. El ruido habita en el mundo
externo, mientras que el sonido en un mundo interno (mente),
por lo que el tercer contexto a donde ninguno de los dos corresponde originalmente es la música, pues está en el mundo
externo y en la mente al mismo tiempo.

La presente tesis trata sobre la investigación de la guitarra eléctrica en Chile en las décadas de 1950 a 1970, tomando tres casos de estudio –guitarristas eléctricos– que dan la panorámica general de la historia del instrumento en nuestro país. La guitarra eléctrica, instrumento musical que mezcla la tecnología acústica con la eléctrica, se instala y difunde por los medios de difusión como los espectáculos musicales, la radio, el tocadiscos, la televisión y el cine sonoro, a través de las nuevas músicas que se imponen en una incipiente juventud, como el rock and roll. Este instrumento musical funciona como un aparato transculturizador (Madrid, 2003) en el momento que es apropiado en/por una localidad generando hibridismo (Farias, 2011) producido en el encuentro de dos culturas, espacio donde adquiere marcas locales obteniendo un nuevo significado –siendo resignificado (Citro y Cerletti, 2006), convirtiéndose en un instrumento musical que permanece en constante diálogo cultural entre lo global y lo local: lo glocal (Bennett y Dawe, 2001). El análisis musical de canciones y solos ejecutados por estos guitarristas ayudarán a la descripción de su "estética sonora‟ particular, generada por la sinergia entre su equipamiento –gear–; sus referentes musicales y los repertorios interpretados, realizada mediante transcripciones del repertorio con notación especializada para guitarra eléctrica.

Le possibilità donate dall’arte musicale elettronica combinate con quelle tradizionali hanno portato la composizione per strumento solo a crescere per importanza e creatività, sia per l’interesse mostrato dai compositori, che per la dedizione degli esecutori allo sviluppo di un nuovo linguaggio oltre quello proprio del repertorio tradizionale. Questo atteggiamento è particolarmente visibile nell’ambiente chitarristico, nel quale non solo compositori di professione, ma anche gli strumen- tisti hanno iniziato a porre la questione del come possa essere interpretata la loro performance all’interno di un discorso musicale contemporaneo. La chitarra, che di sua natura si presta a vari utilizzi, viene dunque paragonata spesso a soli gesti virtuosistici che non nutrono un vero senso compositivo ma solamente muscolare alimentando un discorso compositivo che porta la qualità dei manufatti musicali sempre più verso la semplicità e immediatezza di esecuzione. Il compositore contemporaneo osservando l’ambiente che lo circonda, annotandosi i punti di forza della musica attuale ed estendendo le possibilità pratiche che un esecutore gli propone deve quindi cercare di implementare il suo modus operandi alla scrittura non limitandosi ai confini imposti dall’esecutore. Il seguente testo mira dunque ad avviare una ricerca scientifico-compositiva volta a donare nuovo splendore alla chitarra classica, mostrando ed ampliando le capacità espressive dell’esecutore estendendole attraverso l’utilizzo di adeguati mezzi elettronici.

This article builds a theory of enviromateriality through a global ethnography that engages both the material culture and materiality of a tree species, Honduran mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla), and the global political ecology of forest conservation. The author seeks to understand what Adorno calls the ‘constellation’ between people and mahogany by tracing human–nature relations through the global commodity chain focusing on one particular artefact, the Gibson Les Paul, an iconic solid wood electric guitar made primarily of mahogany grown in Mexico and Fiji. Enviromateriality considers three phases in which to examine the material and materiality in a variety of processes that are interconnected. These phases allow for an examination of local community relations with mahogany as trees and products, and whether certified mahogany helps create sustainability and social justice. The author also examines guitar players’ relations with their mahogany guitars, particularly focusing on the aesthetics that make the Les Paul desired, as well as the sonic and tonal agentic force that they consider mahogany to have.

Solo guitar music is primevally prototypical. Wind-blown brass and reeds are pretty much what they’ve always been, putting aside their obvious technical improvements and genealogy of players—but the stretched string is at the heart of war (the bow), mathematics, science, and music (the Pythagorean monochord, the first solo polyphonic lyre, the keyboard as composer’s tool). Solo music itself is foundational to all made by two or more. Amplified in the 1930s, the guitar broke the conceptual and sonic ground of the electronic music to follow. It covers the aesthetic spectrum from the most amateur populist/improvisational to (as lute and classical acoustic) most composed and refined.
