Intension

La Préface rédigée par Leibniz vers 1670 pour sa réédition de Nizolius a suscité, depuis plus d’un siècle, un intérêt considérable dans le commentaire leibnizien de langue française. L. Couturat a considéré que Leibniz posait dans ce texte les fondements ontologiques propres à garantir, contre l’empirisme, la « valeur objective » des « idées générales » et la possibilité de la connaissance « a priori » (La Logique de Leibniz, 1901, p. 468-469). Relayée en 1993 par R. Bodéüs (Leibniz-Thomasius. Correspondance, p. 233), cette interprétation a eu récemment une double postérité. Pour J.-B. Rauzy, la rédaction par Leibniz de cet opuscule participe de « la genèse du calcul en intension » en déterminant, sous l’appellation de totum distributivum, le corrélat ontologique des notions universelles (La Doctrine leibnizienne de la vérité, Paris, 2001, p. 177-203). Ch. Leduc, dans un article paru en 2008 (« Le Commentaire leibnizien du De Veris principiis de Nizolius », Studia Leibnitiana 38-39), dont son ouvrage récent reprend en partie les conclusions (Substance, individu et connaissance chez Leibniz, 2010), insiste quant à lui sur le rôle décisif que jouent pour Leibniz des « processus de conceptualisation » constituant la signification des termes généraux. C’est l’importance qu’accorderait Leibniz à ce travail de l’esprit qui le distinguerait d’un « nominalisme radical », avatar moderne du vocalisme médiéval, qu’il imputerait non seulement à Nizolius, mais aussi à Hobbes. Contre cette seconde interprétation, nous nous efforcerons de montrer que l’hypothèse vocaliste n’est pas en cause dans les critiques que Leibniz adresse à ces deux auteurs. Son propos est ici de défendre l’autonomie de la science, comme ordre discursif, par rapport à l’existant. Mais pour fonder cette thèse, largement empruntée à Hobbes, il n’a pas recours à des instances psychologiques engendrant un universel in mente, pas plus qu’il ne parvient à la détermination cohérente, sous le nom de totum distributivum, d’un universel in re. Entre les différentes solutions élaborées par ses prédécesseurs pour fonder la prédication nécessaire sur les classes vides, Leibniz n’a pas alors su choisir. Il est ainsi bien loin de la doctrine de la vérité de sa maturité.

Crispin Wright hat die bislang beste Rekonstruktion von Putnams Beweis gegen die skeptische Hypothese vom Gehirn im Tank vorgelegt. Aber selbst in Wrights Fassung hat der Beweis einen Mangel: Er wird mithilfe eines Prädikates wie z.B. "Tiger" geführt und funktioniert nur, wenn man sich darauf verlassen kann, dass es Tiger wirklich gibt. Aber die Skeptikerin bestreitet, über die Existenz von Tigern bescheid zu wissen. Das Problem lässt sich dadurch beheben, dass man den Beweis – statt mit dem extensionalen Begriff der Referenz (wie bei Wright) – mit Intensionen führt. Zudem sollte der Beweis transzendental laufen, also einzig und allein auf den sprachlichen Voraussetzungen beruhen, die auch die Skeptikerin zur Formulierung ihrer Tank-Hypothese benötigt.

This special issue of Cognitive Linguistics explores the linguistic encoding of events of cutting and breaking. In this article we first introduce the project on which it is based by motivating the selection of this conceptual domain, presenting the methods of data collection used by all the investigators, and characterizing the language sample. We then present a new approach to examining crosslinguistic similarities and di¤erences in semantic categorization. Applying statistical modeling to the descriptions of cutting and breaking events elicited from speakers of all the languages, we show that although there is crosslinguistic variation in the number of distinctions made and in the placement of category boundaries, these differences take place within a strongly constrained semantic space: across languages, there is a surprising degree of consensus on the partitioning of events in this domain. In closing, we compare our statistical approach with more conventional semantic analyses, and show how an extensional semantic typological approach like the one illustrated here can help illuminate the intensional distinctions made by languages.

Abstract: The rapid technology developing of mobile phones and other mobile devices has created a new channel for marketing. The use of short messaging service to access customers through their handheld devices is now popular and making the mobile phone as an ultimate tool for one-to-one marketing.
