В статье рассматриваются события, связанные с основанием Свияжска и началом присоединения Чувашии к Московскому государству летом 1551 г. Придерживаясь точки зрения о насильственном включении чувашских земель в состав России, автор тем не менее признает благотворное влияние этого события на становление чувашской нации.

Introduction. The visit of the Russian envoy Osip Nepeya to London in 1556-1557 is usually considered as the beginning of the official relations between Russia and England. In the light of modern views about the sixteenth-century diplomacy, this event requires a more thorough research. Methods. The Nepeya's trip was traditionally viewed as an insignificant episode in the context of general reviews of bilateral relations concentrated mainly on trade. The reasons and possibilities of the military and political rapprochement between England, Spain and Russia in the 1550s, which was the most likely goal of the Nepeya's journey to England, have never been investigated. Therefore, this article is based on an analysis of numerous multilingual sources. Analysis. The author clarifies the Nepeya's diplomatic rank and certain previously unknown details of the Muscovites' stay in London. He analyzes Nepeya's mission to England in the context of foreign affairs of Ivan IV, Mary Tudor and Philip II Habsburg. Results. It is concluded that the rulers of Spain and England could provide military support to Ivan IV, but they were not interested in military and political alliance with the Muscovy and the war against Turkey. However, establishing official equal relations between England and Russia at the highest level, as well as obtaining trade privileges for Russian merchants was the main result of Nepeya's trip. This allows us to conclude that the first Russian diplomatic mission in London was successful.

Since Lucian’s "Conversation in the realm of the dead" each historical epoch tries to invite a dialogue of different generations of rulers. So people want to grasp the reasons of the similarities and differences in their policies and to understand their worldview and value systems.
In this book two Russian sovereigns "met": Ivan IV Vasilievich - the first tsar and the penultimate ruler of the Rurik dynasty and Alexis Mikhailovich - the second representative of the Romanov dynasty on the Russian throne. In the historical memory they were opposites: one is known as the Terrible, another - as the Most Peaceful.
Their "dialogue through time" shows that there were many similarities between them, from the property relationship (Ivan the Terrible married Anastasia Romanovna Zakharina-Yureva) to the issues of policy, the attitude toward the Orthodox Church and country residences. The political symbolism is fed, when Aleksei Mikhailovich appealed  to the memory of his "great-grandfather."
The book invites to dialogue not only kings, but also artefacts of the XVI and XVII centuries from the collections of the Moscow State United Museum Reserve, the State Historical Museum, the Sergiev Posad Museum Reserve, the Museum Reserve "Aleksandrovskaya Sloboda" and Zvenigorod Museum.
Начиная с «Разговоров в царстве мертвых» Лукиана из Самосаты, каждая историческая эпоха старается пригласить к диалогу правителей разных поколений. Таким образом человек хочет уловить причины сходства и различия их политики, понять их мировоззрение и систему ценностей.
В этой книге «встречаются» два российских государя: Иван IV Васильевич — первый царь и предпоследний правитель из династии Рюриковичей и Алексей Михайлович — второй представитель династии Романовых на российском престоле. В исторической памяти они оказались антиподами: одного потомки запомнили Грозным, другого — Тишайшим.
Их «диалог сквозь время» демонстрирует, что было много общего между ними, начиная со свойственных отношений (Иван Грозный был женат на Анастасии Романовне Захарьиной-Юрьевой) и заканчивая вопросами внутренней и внешней политики, взглядами на Православную церковь и загородные резиденции. Политический символизм обрел почву в практике обращения Алексея Михайловича к памяти своего «прадеда».
Книга приглашает к диалогу не только царей, но и памятники XVI и XVII веков из собраний Московского государственного объединенного музея-заповедника, Государственного исторического музея, Сергиево-Посадского музея-заповедника, Музея-заповедника «Александровская слобода» и Звенигородского музея-заповедника.

Russian historian Sigurd Schmidt elaborated the systemic conception of absolutism in Russia as “normal” European political regime, which underwent fatal changes during Ivan the Terrible’s reign. Schmidt overcomes lack of historical sources – a majority of which was destroyed in fires and by official decisions – dealing with the mainstream questions of the world historical science on the development of the political system in Russia since the end of the 15th century up to the time of Joseph Stalin. He shows how the early evidence of the popular movements, the state advisory councils, the bureaucratic apparatus and the state chancellery allows determining the Russian state system and political culture before the triumph of the autocracy.

The article for the first time analyzes innovative and traditional trends in the works of modern art devoted to the image of Ivan the Terrible. On the basis of art history and cultural-historical approaches the author reveals and analyzes the continuity of art of XIX and XX centuries in formal and substantive aspects. The subject of the study are the following trends: the similarity of the figurative language of the works of the Russian school of painting XIX and XX centuries; allusively as the iconic feature of the artistic thinking, the coexistence of the salon-academic and democratic lines of painting for two centuries, interest in the heritage of the “Russian style”, leading from the origins of the middle Ages; the interaction of religious and secular origins; themed community art, past and present. Particular emphasis is placed on the search for new themes in modern historical painting. The author considers as works of the leading masters of a modern era, and beginning painters and sculptors. The article analyzes the relationship between fine arts and historical science. The article is based on works of art kept in various museums (fine arts, local history, historical, military, Museum-reserves), private collections displayed at temporary exhibitions.

В статье впервые анализируются новаторские и традиционные тенденции в произведениях современного искусства, посвященных образу Ивана Грозного. На основе искусствоведческого и культурно-исторического подходов автор выявляет и анализирует преемственность искусства XIX и ХХ веков в формальных и содержательных аспектах. Предметом исследования выступают следующие тенденции: схожесть образного языка произведений русской живописной школы XIX и
XX веков; аллюзивность, как знаковая черта художественного мышления, сосуществование салонно-академической и демократической линий живописи на протяжении двух веков; интерес к наследию «русского стиля», ведущего истоки от Средневековья; взаимодействие религиозного и светского начал; тематическая общность искусства прошлого и настоящего. Особый акцент сделан на поиске новых тем в современной исторической живописи. Автор рассматривает как произведения ведущих мастеров современной эпохи, так и начинающих живописцев и скульпторов. В статье анализируется взаимосвязь изобразительного искусства и исторической науки. Статья основана на произведениях искусства, хранящихся в разнообразных музеях (изобразительного искусства, краеведческих, исторических, военных, музеях-заповедниках), частных коллекциях, демонстрируемых на временных
выставках.

Рецензия-обзор на главный интеллектуальный бестселлер этого года - книгу Михаила Крома "Рождение государства", в которой сформулирован убийственный для целого ряда историографических и историосфоских ересей тезис о том, что Россия в XV-XVI веке развивалась как нормальное раннемодерное государство, а всевозможный ивантеррибль был отклонением, а не магистральным путем.

Полностью соглашаясь с автором в этом тезисе, я не могу принять только его попыток уклониться от признания этого раннемодерного русского государства полноценным ранним национальным государством. И во всех подробностях опровергаю попытки "денационализации" Руси иванов и василиев. Ну и некоторые другие мои тезисы тоже имеют значение - например постановка под сомнение общего места о некоей "династической войне", якобы терзавшей Москву большую часть правления Василия II.

The author of the essay reflects on the attitude in today's Russia to the
personality of Tsar Ivan IV the Terrible, reverence for him in certain circles of Russian society and analyzes the commemorative practice associated with this. Most of all he is occupied by the problem of the relationship between academic knowledge and public perception of the figure of the first Russian Tsar.

В статье переписка между Иваном IV и властями Короны Польской и Великого княжества Литовского изучена как источник по истории политической мысли. Особое внимание уделено формированию образа врага в лице унийного государства Ягеллонов и их наследников в Речи Посполитой. Ход переписки показывает, как замыслы Ивана IV, дипломатическая борьба и война меняли риторические стратегии, направленные на вычеркивание польско-литовской унии из истории и с политической карты современности. В общей сложности изучено 306 посольских посланий, не считая сопроводительной дипломатической документации и других источников. Целесообразным было разделить их по 10 периодам и представить общие тенденции в переписке в рамках предложенной периодизации.

"The Kazan Khanate has been founded in 1446 by Mahmutek Khan. The Khanate kept its policital, military and economical relations with Moscovy Principality from its founding until its falldown. These relations which lasted for about a century can be divided into three periods.
At beginning of the first period which lasted until 1518, both states had equal status. Although Kazan became a satellite of Moscovy between 1487 and 1505, it still did not put itself under the yoke of Moscovy. The second period started with admission of the Kazan khanship of Shah Ali in 1518 and witnessed the standoff between Crimea and Moscovy over Kazan. During this period, the Khanate of Kazan lost its independence and found itself under the yoke of said two states from time to time. This period came to an end when Ivan IV, has declared himself a Tsar. And the third period witnessed the falldown of the Kazan. Khanate. Most distinctive feature of this period was the Militarist Orthodox Ideology put into practice by the Tsarist Regime of Moscovy as a state policy. Acting in this direction, Moscovy became an imperial power.
One of the most important military – political figures of the last two periods is Shah Ali. During his first khanship in Kazan (1519 – 1521), Kazan has officially yielded to Moscovy’s sovereignty. He administered the construction of Vasiligorod of strategic importance in 1523 and inspired the idea of construction of Sviyajsk in 1551. These are the first two steps towards the fall down of the Khanate of Kazan. And the construction of these castles had been followed by the invasion of the Kazan by Moscovy in October, 1552, as the third step."

В статье рассматриваются новейшие архивные находки, относящиеся к двум эпизодам служебной карьеры кн. М.И. Воротынского. Первая из них, запись Колюбакинского списка Разрядной книги 1478–1603 гг., проясняет роль князя в местническом конфликте декабря 1544 г.: Воротынский отказался быть «сходным» воеводой в отряде кн. П.М. Щенятева, что парализовало действия русских частей во время набега крымских татар на южные рубежи России. Вторая – митрополичий летописец кануна опричнины – раскрывает причину опалы князей М.И. и А.И. Воротынских в сентябре 1562 г.: летом этого года армия Воротынского не смогла настичь отступавших от Мценска крымских татар, после чего высший командный состав был обвинен в государственной измене.

Статья посвящена визуализации методом мультиспектральной съемки с последующей программной обработкой единственного прижизненного портрета Ивана Грозного, выполненного в технике тиснения на коже верхней крышке переплета Апостола Ивана Федорова. The article is devoted to the visualization by the method of multispectral shooting with the subsequent program processing of the only lifetime portrait of Ivan the Terrible, made using the embossing technique on the binding of the Ivan Fedorov's Apostle.

В статье рассматривается дискутируемый в историографии вопрос об антиопричном демарше казанского архиепископа Германа (Садырева-Полева). Опираясь на свидетельства современников этого события, автор доказывает, что Герман поддержал митрополита Филиппа (Колычева) в его выступлении против углубления опричной политики осенью 1567 г. Вскоре Герман скончался в Москве от мора. С течением времени поступок Германа начал обрастать церковными легендами. В Житии святого, написанном в 1660-х гг. по заказу казанского митрополита Лаврентия II, впервые говорится о том, что Герман защищал митрополита Филиппа на соборном суде осенью 1568 г. После осмотра мощей Германа в 1889 г. в церковной печати появляется версия о его гибели от рук опричников. Таким образом, к началу XX в. казанское епархиальное начальство представило Германа в роли мученика, заступившегося за опального митрополита Филиппа и казненного по приказу Ивана Грозного. Источники XVI в. полностью опровергают первую часть этого образа, протокол освидетельствования мощей Германа Казанского в мае 1923 г. — вторую.

Unter den Quellen fremder Herkunft, die das Thema Rußland in der Zeit Ivans des Schrecklichen behandeln, nimmt der Bericht Albert Schlichtings eine besondere Stellung ein. Der literarisch ansprechende und durch eine Fülle von Einzelheiten beeindruckende Bericht des aus russischer Gefangenschaft Entflohenen, der nicht nur die Gelegenheit gehabt hatte, sich einige Jahre in der russischen Hauptstadt aufzuhalten, sondern während dieser Zeit auch dem Zarenhof nahe gestanden war, hat die Aufmerksamkeit der Forschung von dem Augenblick an auf sich gezogen, als dank dem Fund PIERRE PIERLINGS im Vatikanischen Archiv die lateinische Fassung De moribus et imperandi crudelitate Basilij Moschoviae Tyranni brevis ennaraüS dem Vergessen entrissen wurde. Der nächste Forscher, der viel zum Bekanntwerden des Berichts beigetragen hat, war der Russe EVGENIJ SMURLO; ihm verdanken wir den ersten Versuch einer Analyse von Schlichtings Schrift sowie die Herausarbeitung ihres Zusammenhanges mit der bekannten Darstellung der Verbrechen Ivans des Schrecklichen in dem Werk von ALESSANDRO GUAGNINI Sarmatiae Europae descriptio, das um die Wende des 16. zum 17. Jahrhundert in Europa sehr populär war. Namentlich geht es hier um dessen Kapitel V: De Magni Moscoviae dueis Joannis Basiliadis tyrannide. В статье рассматриваются обстоятельства местнического конфликта князей А.Б. Трубецкого и П.М. Щенятева на полоцком воеводстве весной 1564 г., а также причины окончательного перехода князей Трубецких на государеву службу. Вплоть до 1560-х гг. Трубецкие занимали военные и административные посты эпизодически и не были прочно встроены в систему служебных отношений Московского государства. Принятие в начале 1560-х гг. нового земельного законодательства поставило под угрозу дальнейшее существование удела Трубецких и вынудило их активизировать служебную деятельность. Конфликт в Полоцке стал первой попыткой Трубецких выяснить свой настоящий местнический статус. Князь А.Б. Трубецкой руководствовался старыми представлениями об исключительной роли служилых князей, характерными для первой трети XVI в. Он вступил в местнический спор с заведомо превосходящим противником и не вышел из него победителем. Столкнувшись с новыми реалиями государевой службы, Трубецкие, вследствие своей служебной пассивности уступавшие в местническом отношении многим менее знатным родам, пожертвовали своей относительной независимостью и всецело перешли на царскую службу. В годы опричнины они активно служили в опричном уделе царя Ивана Грозного, снискали его расположение и смогли повысить свой местнический статус.

Rome hérétique ? Sur les décisions des conciles de Moscou et de Constantinople (1589, 1590 et 1593), in: A. Girard et B. Schmitz (éd.), De l’Église aux Églises : réflexions sur le schisme aux Temps modernes, [= Mélanges de l’École française de Rome, 126-2 (2014)], p. 275-288.

The article reexamines the question of the foundation of the patriarchate of Moscow (1589), endorsed by the councils of Constantinople in 1590 and 1593. This problem has been treated as a purely Russian matter, and as a natural extension of imperial claims after consecration of Ivan IV as tsar in 1547. Historiography has focused on the claims of the Russian Church to occupy third place in the pentarchy and the refusal of the Ecumenical Patriarchate to give it any other place than the fifth. But this also implied that the first place of the pentarchy was now occupied by Constantinople, excluding completely and definitively the Church of Rome, considered to be fallen in the Apollinariste heresy. The article analyzes the circumstances that forced the Patriarchate of Constantinople, in the second half of the 16th century, to take the irremediable nature of the schism with the papacy into account and to exclude the Church of Rome out of the pentarchy.

Статья посвящена рассмотрению исторических обстоятельств появления соборного Приговора о белом клобуке 9 февраля 1564 г. (краткая история бытования белого клобука на Руси, причины возвращения московским митрополитам утраченной ранее «древней почести», значение Приговора в контексте церковно-государственных отношений сер. XVI в., а также последствия его принятия).

This article examines the factors that influenced the creation of the first Russian (so-called “anonymous”) printing press around 1553. The article shows that the first attempts to introduce printing took place as early as the 1540s (as seen in the Hans Schlitte mission and in a letter from Ivan IV to the Danish King Christian III). Thus the Sloglav Council (1551) or the conquest of Kazan (1552) could not be the immediate reasons for the introduction of printing in Russia. The direct reason was the need to standardize church service books. The article argues that the production of printed books in Russia also greatly accelerated as a result of the fire in Moscow in 1547, which destroyed an enormous quantity of books in the libraries in the capital. The capacities of the existing scriptoria in Moscow at the time were insufficient to restore quickly the large quantities of books lost in the fire. It became necessary to employ new methods for replacing the lost books (first and foremost, liturgical books). This study is based in a wide range of sources, including materials connected with the so-called “Viskovatyi Affair,” chronicles, the Tale of the Moscow Fire of 1547, the Book of Degrees, marginalia and other inscriptions found in some books, inventories compiled by the scribal staffs in chanceries, the colophon of the 1564 Apostol, and other sources.
В статье рассматривается вопрос о факторах, оказавших влияние на создание первой русской (т.н. «анонимной») типографии около 1553 г. Показано, что первые попытки введения книгопечатания предпринимались уже в конце 1540-х гг. (миссия Г. Шлитте, письмо Ивана IV датскому королю Христиану III). Соответственно, Стоглавый собор (1551 г.) и присоединение Казани (1552 г.) непосредственными причинами начала книгопечатания являться не могли. Главной причиной являлась необходимость унификации богослужебных книг. Высказывается предположение о том, что процесс печатного производства книг в России значительно ускорил разрушительный Московский пожар 1547 г. С ним были связаны серьезные потери в книжном фонде библиотек столицы. Возможностей книгописных центров Москвы было недостаточно для восполнения утрат в кратчайшие сроки. Было необходимо использовать новые методы тиражирования книг (по преимуществу, богослужебных). Исследование основано на материале «дела И.М. Висковатого», летописей, Повести о Московском пожаре 1547 г., Степенной книги, записей на книгах, писцовых описаний, Послесловия к Апостолу 1564 г. и иных источников.

Cтатья посвящена шлему Ивана Грозного — одному из наиболее известных памятников защитного вооружения, сохранившихся от эпохи Рюриковичей. В работе поставлен ряд источниковедческих
и методологических вопросов, связанных с изучением владельческой и псевдоарабской надписей на шлеме, а также с особенностями декоративного оформления и метрических параметров шлема. Анализируя ключевые признаки, лежащие в основе атрибуции предмета, и рассматривая существующие концепции, связанные с вопросами его датировки, происхождения и предназначения, автор констатирует противоречивость и недостаточность научных знаний об этом памятнике и невозможность его корректной атрибуции на данном историографическом этапе. Автор выдвигает предположение о том, что шлем Ивана Грозного был редекорирован и золотой декор на нем относится к более позднему времени, чем сам шлем, и предлагает пересмотреть устоявшиеся в научной традиции
выводы об этом предмете. ****** The article is devoted to the helmet of Ivan the Terrible, one of the most well-known piece of armour, which has survived to our days since the time of the Rurik dynasty. The article deals with a number of issues of source criticism and methodology regarding the study of the possessory and pseudo Arabic inscriptions on the helmet, as well as the particularities of its decorative design and physical characteristics (size, weight). On the basis of the analysis of the key features for the attribution of the helmet and the existing concepts concerning its dating, provenance and the intended purpose, the author points out the inconsistency and the lack of scientific data on the monument, which makes it impossible to attribute it correctly at present.
The author hypothesizes that the helmet of Ivan the Terrible was redecorated, and that its gilded decoration dates back to a later period than the helmet itself. The author suggests that the traditional scholarly views on the helmet of Ivan the Terrible should be reconsidered.
