The first part of the essay contains a reviews of Clara Maffei’s published correspondences. The second part of the essay studies the use of the letters in Maffei’s biography. The third and longest part of essay identifies and analyses unpublished letters written by Clara Maffei. These letters are preserved at A. Mai Library in Bergamo, at the National Library in Florence, at the Parish Archives of
Clusone, at the Municipal Library of Riva del Garda, at the Mosconi’s private archive of Sandrà. Clara Maffei’s biographies ignore a great number of these letters, written to Andrea Maffei, Emilia Peruzzi, Giacomo Mosconi, Giovanni Visconti Venosta.
