Martin Heiddeger

Richard Wolin is Distinguished Professor of History, Political Science and Comparative Literature at the CUNY Graduate Center. He is been Professeur Invité at the University of Paris-X (Nanterre) and the University of Nantes. Among his books, which have been translated into ten languages, are:Heidegger’s Children: Hannah Arendt, Karl Löwith, Hans Jonas and Herbert Marcuse, The Seduction of Unreason: the Intellectual Romance with Fascism from Nietzsche to Postermodernism, and The Wind From the East: French Intellectuals, the Cultural Revolution and the Legacy of the 1960s, which was listed by the Financial Times as one of the best books of 2012. He frequently writes on intellectual and political themes for the New Republic, the Nation, and Dissent.

Mucho se ha escrito a propósito de la frase heideggeriana “el animal es pobre de mundo”. Por lo general se ha interpretado como enunciado autónomo y definitivo. En otros casos, se ha propuesto como enunciado provisional. En este texto se pretende comprender dicha tesis desde el con-texto en el que fue enunciado, esto es, como parte de las lecciones que Heidegger impartió entre 1929-1930, de tal forma, se pretende llevar a cabo una deconstrucción de los términos que en dicho enunciado están en juego con el fin de mostrar su sentido en el horizonte de los textos heideggerianos dedicados a la pregunta por la metafísica.

This article frames Pope Francis' encyclical Laudato Si' as papal media ecology, religious communication that invites interpretations using media ecology. First, a media ecological analysis of Laudato Si' articulates concerns about the global, environmental impact of the technocratic paradigm. Second, Martin Heidegger's definition for ge-stell is examined to consider the effects of technology on existence. Third, Heidegger's methods for rejecting ge-stell are compared to Pope Francis' plans for replacing the technocratic paradigm. Pope Francis offers a superior approach because a combined top-down and bottom-up approach in a community committed to social change is more likely to enact a paradigm shift.

Mit der Veröffentlichung von Martin Heideggers »Schwarzen Heften« hat sich die Debatte zur Verstrickung von Philosophie und Nationalsozialismus erneuert und verschärft. Offen antisemitische Äußerungen in diesen Denktagebüchern haben auch in der nichtakademischen Öffentlichkeit für Empörung gesorgt. Die entscheidende Frage ist jedoch, welche Veränderungen der Perspektive auf Heideggers Denken insgesamt sich dadurch ergeben und ob damit zugleich eine Neubewertung des Gesamtwerks eines der einflussreichsten Philosophen des 20. Jahrhunderts nötig ist. Die Beiträge in diesem Band erkunden Heideggers philosophische und politische Aussagen sowie seine Selbstinszenierung und seine Verwendung von Ideologemen seiner Zeit.

El libro que a continuación se presenta contiene desarrollos de las tesis doctorales de los estudiantes del Énfasis de Lenguaje del Doctorado Interinstitucional de Educación (DIE). Corresponden, de igual manera, al desarrollo de algunas de las líneas de investigación en lenguaje y educación: argumentación, discurso y discriminación, mejoramiento de la calidad de la enseñanza de la lengua materna, y didáctica y pedagogía de la literatura. Por tal motivo, las temáticas, marcos teóricos y metodológicos son diversos, aunque convergen en algunos puntos.

The mind knows things and entities, the mind knows beings, infinite numbers of beings and things. The mind knows difference. The mind thinks conceptually, feels affectively, imagines through imagery, the mind has sense and the mind has memory. The mind knows dualistically.

Nel presente lavoro si analizzano i concetti principali che concorrono alla definizione della natura dell'essere umano come essere sessuale, tra i quali: coscienza, intersoggettività, corpo e desiderio. Partendo dall'esistenzialismo di Jean-Paul Sartre si delinea mano a mano una fenomenologia che mette in risalto la sessualità come qualcosa di connaturato all'essere umano tanto quanto la razionalità. La sessualità infatti non è un accessorio aggiunto ma è 'coestensiva' all'uomo, sessualità ed esistenza si compenetrano mantenendosi entro un'unità che tiene insieme i diversi aspetti dell'essere umano.
La sessualità rivendica la sua importanza, soprattutto negli ultimi cent'anni che è stata esposta senza pudore e coinvolta in qualunque aspetto della vita dell'uomo, non vive più nell'ombra, e non è protetta dalla discreta intimità di una relazione, è uscita allo scoperto e i discorsi scientifici abbondano e hanno portato in vita una disciplina dedicata ad essa: la sessuologia. Il ragionamento filosofico non può essere escluso dal momento che accettiamo l'uomo come essere sessuale dobbiamo analizzarne le implicazioni che ne conseguono nella relazione con il mondo e con gli altri. La sessualità non è solo sesso e non è solo amore, è tutto, è uomo, corpo, desiderio, rapporto con l'altro, è esistenza.

It is not easy to understand the nature of the guru and understanding the nature of the guru can be bewildering. There is often bewilderment about the guru. One source of the bewilderment is that people think that the guru is an individual person and for most people the understanding that the guru is not a person has been foreclosed. The guru is not a person. And when people see and believe the guru is a person, such a belief will create illusions about the person whom they think is the guru, and their own relationship with the person whom they see as the guru will fall into various forms of the psychology of transference. Moreover, the true and pervasive nature of the guru will be concealed and the power of the guru limited and anthropomorphized, and politicized. To use Heideggerian language the ontic dimension will become the focus and the ontological dimension becomes foreclosed. In fact, the guru is not an entity, the guru is not a thing, and the guru is not even a being. The guru is the field of Being. The guru is the field of Being's manifestation of understanding, manifestation of protection and manifestation of self-revelation. The guru is the radiance of primordial awareness. The contemporary master of Kashmir Shavism, Swami Muktananda would teach, using the language of theology, " the guru is the grace bestowing power of God. " He would also say " The guru is your own innermost awareness and you must get beyond your mind to experience the guru as your own awareness. The light of the guru can manifest and shine forth through you and me, and through everyone. El llamado transhumanismo es un proyecto antropotécnico que pretende aumentar las facultades físicas y cognitivas del ser humano mediante el empleo intensivo de las nuevas tecnologías. No obstante, examinado bajo la lente del pensamiento de Heidegger tal proyecto confirma la idea del filósofo alemán de que la técnica moderna es un dispositivo ontológico en el que la totalidad de los entes es emplazada como existencias o recursos explotables. Así pues, en un primer momento el artículo se sirve de la reflexión heideggeriana sobre la técnica para exhibir el peligro de deshumanización que envuelve al proyecto transhumanista. En un segundo momento, en cambio, se pone al descubierto la limitación de su pensamiento para salir al paso de manera aún más eficaz frente al peligro del transhumanismo al rehusarse a afirmar el carácter esencialmente viviente del ser humano.

The present study investigates the concept of humanism in terms of the two forms of contemporary humanism, namely Sartre's existentialist humanism and Heideggerean humanism. The aim is to explore the concept in detail and to present the views of Sartre and Heidegger on humanism and to shed a light on the discrepancy of the two views and disprove the arguments of some of the critics who claimed their similarity. Firstly, the concept is explained in terms of different classifications according to the historical era they became prominent and the philosophers or philosophical movements the concept was associated with. Then Sartre's existential humanism is discussed in relation with his " being-for-itself " and idea of human freedom. Sartre's view of humanism is followed by Heideggereanhumanism which isstudied in association with Heidegger's concepts of Dasein and Being. The investigation ends with the emphasis of the difference between Sartre's and Heidegger's views of humanism.

The purpose of the present essay is an attempt to establish a parallel between Heidegger's and Guardini's views, starting from the value both attributed to images. In their research upon the essence of art and poetry, both philosophers inevitably came across the presence and use of images, posing questions about their role and function. Different concepts emerged, since according to Guardini images play a pivotal role because of their ierofanic and symbolic nature, while according to Heidegger – who strongly criticizes them – images are traditionally metaphysical instruments. However, a point of convergence between the two unexpectedly brings them near, and poses a new question about the possibility to acknowledge images to have a positive role even in the context of Heidegger's views, thus avoiding to fall back in the – strictly metaphysical – oblivion of being.

Scopo del presente saggio è il tentativo di realizzare un confronto tra il pensiero di Heidegger e di Guardini a partire dal valore che essi riconoscono alle immagini. Nell'ambito della loro riflessione sull'essenza dell'opera d'arte e della poesia entrambi i filosofi si imbattono inevitabilmente nella presenza e nell'utilizzo delle immagini interrogandosi sul loro ruolo e sulla loro funzione. Ne emergeranno concezioni differenti in quanto per Guardini le immagini svolgono un ruolo centrale per la loro natura simbolica e ierofanica, mentre per Heidegger, che le critica in maniera decisa, sono uno strumento della visione metafisica tradizionale. Tuttavia, tra le concezioni dei due pensatori emerge un punto di contatto che li avvicina inaspettatamente e apre l'interrogativo circa la possibilità di riconoscere alle immagini un ruolo positivo anche nel contesto del pensiero heideggeriano, evitando di ricadere nell'oblio dell'essere proprio della metafisica.

La Lettera sull'Umanesimo di Costanzo Preve è dunque un antidoto e un invito. Un antidoto contro ogni forma di dogmatismo del pensiero e l’invito a mantenere vivo il desiderio di verità che necessariamente conduce ad un bisogno di giustizia e di equità.

Following from an earlier study of ‘literate technologies,’ the present volume continues an exploration of the discursive character of time, mediality, representation and the technologisation of presence.

In this work, we attempt a philosophical approach to the measurement process motivated by the comments of Martin Heidegger on the poetry of F. Hölderlin about the relationship of the measure with poetry and human dwelling. We start with discussing the question “what is a measurement” in the context of the fundamental human effort to get familiar with the unknown world surrounding him/her. Then we focus on two fundamental features/limitations of the measurement process: a) the inevitable influence of the observation act and the design of measurement process on the results of measurement and b) the unattainable goal of the fully accurate measurement due to the omnipresence of noise.  These two features/limitations motivate us to investigate broader considerations and interpretations of the notion of measure and act of measurement. We initiate such an investigation based on a) the philosophical comments of M. Heidegger on the poetry of F. Holderlin and c ) the concept and role of measure and measurement in art and artistic practice in general. Our ultimate goal is to prepare and cause a cross-fertilization of the scientific with the philosophical/artistic approach to the measure and measurement process.

Lyotard raccomanda, obtorto collo, non di affidarsi al relativismo, ovviamente, ma di imparare a convivere con esso e dunque a ripensare realtà e supposizioni, in quanto l’essere è tramontato e il divenire ha mostrato le sue carte. La convivenza con il relativismo, aggiunge modestamente l’autore dell’articolo, ha il pregio di stimolare la ricerca e, grazie agli strumenti nuovi (il computer, internet) di porre sotto discussione i progressi scientifici e culturali, di farlo, per lo meno, da un punto di vista della dignità intellettuale e morale che appartiene ad ognuno di noi, altro che Orwell 1984!

Superato l’esame d’abilitazione all’insegnamento, nell’anno scolastico 1936/37 Cioran, allora venticinquenne, ottenne la nomina come professore di filosofia al liceo Andrei Şaguna di Braşov. I pessimi rapporti con il preside, i colleghi e gli studenti, renderanno l’esperienza “catastrofica”.
All'infuori di quello scivolone giovanile, l’abiezione del lavoro non gli avvelenò mai più la vita. Il mondo, forse, avrà perduto un docente, ma i suoi lettori hanno guadagnato un prosatore impareggiabile e un provvidenziale medicatore dell’anima, e il vantaggio, lasciatemelo dire, è inestimabile.

1. El libro de claro designio hermenéutico examina la relación, crítica, deudas e influencias entre Sloterdijk y Heidegger. La recepción filosófica se concentra en las declaraciones de Peter Sloterdijk en torno a la obra temprana de Martin Heidegger para -desde esta acotada perspectiva- dar cuenta de la compleja recepción filosófica que la obra de Heidegger ha tenido entre los pensadores alemanes que le preceden.
El libro analiza el caso de Peter Sloterdijk, quien a la vez retoma y critica a su antecesor, Martin Heidegger. Aun cuando el término 'maestro' no sea el que más convenga para caracterizar a Heidegger en relación con Sloterdijk, claramente entre ambos autores hay preocupaciones y problemas filosóficos compartidos; de allí que se justifique relacionarlos en una línea de sucesión. Además, Sloterdijk ha declarado que Heidegger -sin lugar a dudas- se encuentra en la primera línea de la filosofía europea, "quizás el único en nuestro siglo que, mirando con cierta amplitud, podría aspirar a codearse con Platón, San Agustín, Tomás de Aquino, Spinoza, Kant, Hegel y Nietzsche" (Sloterdijk y Heinrichs 2004, p. 104). Sin embargo, Sloterdijk no repara en objetar a Heidegger el haberse dejado arrastrar por la marea de la política, comprometiéndose con el nacionalsocialismo -cuestión tratada exhaustivamente por una copiosa literatura previa-, criticándole además por sus preferencias localistas, provincianas y nacionalistas, todas las cuales le habrían impreso un talante anacrónico, no solo a su personalidad, sino fundamentalmente a sus doctrinas y a sus obras.

Pese a todo, la relación de Heidegger y el nacionalsocialismo puede ser entendida como de hecho lo intenta Sloterdijk a través de un concepto heideggeriano -la "errancia"- sobre la que se profundizará luego. El punto aquí es que Sloterdijk califica a Heidegger de una suerte de "Empédocles político", el filósofo presocrático que según la tradición saltó al volcán Etna para probar su linaje divino. Para explicar este hecho, Sloterdijk, según la referencia de la profesora Cordua, nos dice que el silencio de Heidegger: "Después de 1945 solo puede ser comprendido como un gesto de vergüenza empedocleana; si el cráter no devora al sabio sino que lo devuelve, condenándolo a la ignominia de la sobrevivencia, entonces el sujeto recibirá una lección importante de ello, pero la humillación es demasiado profunda como para que pueda ser discutida en público. Solo al borde del cráter se aclara el sentido de la frase: Pensar en grande significa errar en grande" (Cordua 2008, p. 31).

Heidegger impresiona a Sloterdijk por su incomprensión del mundo moderno, incomprensión, piensa, ligada estrechamente a su rechazo de la racionalidad técnica, su conservadurismo político y su apego a la tierra (Cordua 2008, p. 28). De allí que el claro -die Lichtung- de Heidegger sea una metáfora forestal, propia del imaginario filoagrario (Vásquez Rocca 20086) que no evoca el ámbito de las discusiones ciudadanas, entre las que cabe considerar, por ejemplo, el mercado. Por ello, Heidegger no avanzó hasta la ciudad y su centro, hasta la plaza, el agora o el foro, resultándole aún más ajeno aquello a que se llega trascendiendo la ciudad: el espacio político del Estado, las relaciones internacionales, el cosmopolitismo moderno. Heidegger, como el último cerebro de la era agraria, reaccionó contra la modernidad industrializada. "Nunca entendió ni supo apreciar la navegación ultramarina, ni el capital, ni los medios de comunicación", que son precisamente los temas que hoy ocupan a Sloterdijk (2007). Así, en la perspectiva de Sloterdijk, el rechazo heideggeriano de la antropología no solo separa a la filosofía de fuentes de información indispensables, sino que, peor aún, es una actitud que excluye la posibilidad de que el pensamiento pueda nutrirse del rico saber empírico acumulado en las ciencias especiales.
De este modo, como se puntualiza en el libro, Sloterdijk critica a Heidegger su concepto de mundo y particularmente el modo de concebir la entrada del hombre en él. Según Heidegger, somos arrojados en el mundo, cosa ominosa que tiene el acento de un un oscuro castigo; de este modo, el mundo moderno, hogar largamente preparado por la historia de lo monstruoso violento y arbitrario (das Ungeheure), es el lugar en el que luchan los gigantes poderes impersonales ligados a la técnica apocalíptica. "En el universo del conocimiento moderno predominan los bastidores, los suelos dobles, los panoramas, las imágenes engañosas, los gestos torcidos, los sentimientos secretos, los motivos ocultos, los cuerpos envueltos" (Sloterdijk 2003a, t. II, p. 604).
