Medieval Epigraphy

La scrivente, nella sua veste di curatore del volume, traccia le linee di sviluppo della ricerca intorno al tema della rifunzionalizzazione del documento epigrafico, a partire dal contesto originario per giungere al suo reimpiego nelle età successive. L'intenzione è quella di illustrare “la vita dopo la vita” delle iscrizioni, in altre parole la loro forte e vigorosa ricomparsa al di fuori e al di là del contesto primario, legato all’incisione e all’esposizione originarie. In un ambito che può anche essere definito para-epigrafico o meta-epigrafico, infatti, l’iscrizione continua a giocare un ruolo da protagonista, divenendo un oggetto di riferimento storico o artistico o semiotico o culturale e continuando in ogni caso il proprio ciclo vitale in contesti che trascendono la funzione iniziale.

In the Church of the Archangel Michael in Markušovce an exceptional collection of sepulchral monuments has been preserved. They are remarkable not just because there are so many of them, at a number never before seen elsewhere in village churches in the Spiš region, but also for the information that they offer us as researchers. The church dates from the second half of the 13th century and since its origin served not just as the parish church but also as the estate church of the Markušovský branch of the Mariáši family (Máriássy, Markušovskí), which derived its predicate from the village that
was in its possession for centuries. This family was one of the oldest and most prominent noble families in the Spiš region. The inscriptions on the sepulchral monuments were copied in the late 18th century by the Spiš historian Carolus Wagner and later by other researchers. Despite this, more in-depth research was never carried out and the study at hand is the first ever analysis and contextual evaluation. Epigraphic study helped to fill in some dynastic prosopographic information and identify who commissioned the sepulchral monuments and how they came into existence. The oldest surviving sepulchral monument was created before 1516, when Štefan VI Mariáši, who both commissioned and ultimately occupied it, died. Besides this, there are also seven surviving inscribed heraldic
tombs or epitaphs(?) and one tombstone with just the inscribed segment, part of which is still in its original location. The sepulchral monuments of Žigmund I, Pavel II, and František V Mariáši all suggest they were the work of a local,
domestic workshop. On top of this collection of surviving sepulchral monuments is knowledge of several no longer existing monuments that were used in burial rites and the related but today little known heraldic slabs that belonged to Lucie Čaholi, the wife of Štefan VI Mariáši, and the latter’s patrons Ján and Juraj Zápoľský and their mother Hedviga, a Tešín princess and the widow of the Palatine Štefan Zápoľski. A larger and more significant collection of sepulchral monuments in Spiš can be found in the town parish Church of St Jakub in Levoča and St Martin’s Cathedral in Spišská Kapitula, but these are different types of church artefacts used also for different functions as the Markušovský church.

Given the iconographic and thematic similarity of the tympanum of Moradillo de Sedano with those of Santa María y San Nicolás de Tudela, Santo Domingo de Soria, San Miguel de Estella y con el convento de La Concepción de Berlanga de Duero, this article is about defining the iconographic sources of this representations and defining their historical chronology.

L’argomento presentato nasce da un dottorato di ricerca svolto presso l’università di Roma Sapienza sulla tipologia epigrafica delle chartae lapidarie quali strumento di indagine sulle elargizioni territoriali di privati e autorità ecclesiastiche nell’area di Roma e del Lazio. In questa sede si vuole proporre un’analisi del rapporto tra queste iscrizioni e i documenti da cui scaturiscono.
Controllo e registrazione dei benefici ottenuti, elementi fondanti di qualsiasi tipologia contrattuale, si arricchiscono in questo caso della capacità di eternare su un supporto meno fragile e soprattutto estremamente più visibile, sia per le dimensioni che per il luogo deputato alla sua conservazione, di quello su papiro o pergamena. Ecco così emergere un tratto fondamentale delle carte lapidarie: la loro capacità di pubblicizzare il messaggio scritto presso un pubblico molto vasto, sia esso alfabetizzato o semplicemente in grado di cogliere il valore iconico della scrittura.
Per il periodo in esame si contano 15 chartae lapidariae provenienti dalla città di Roma e 7 distribuite nel resto del Lazio. In ambito regionale spicca la città di Anagni che custodisce ben due iscrizioni della categoria in esame, una delle quali presenta la peculiarità di essere incisa su diversi supporti dell’arredo liturgico della cattedrale altomedievale.
La confluenza di dati materiali e documentari e il confronto fra gli elementi intrinseci ed estrinseci di ciascuna epigrafe sarà quindi utilizzato per analizzare i modi di pubblicizzare l’attività di registrazione e controllo dei beni acquisiti delineando quali siano le componenti formali e sostanziali ereditate dall’originale su supporti molli, quali di essi siano i più ricorrenti e caratterizzanti, quali siano assenti e le implicazioni delle riformulazioni epigrafiche dei documenti originali.

Il contributo ha lo scopo di fornire un'aggiornata rassegna bibliografica delle principali fonti e strumenti per lo studio del volgare esposto in Italia, sia come testimonianza linguistica, sia come documenti di storia culturale. Le autrici sono impegnate in un progetto di ricerca dottorale presso "La Sapienza", che ha come obiettivo la formazione di un corpus di iscrizioni in lingua volgare per l’intero territorio italiano relativo ai secoli IX-XV.

In this paper, the epigraphy of the Coimbra coins of the first kings of Portugal, including the "dinheiros velhos" and the "morabitinos", is deconstructed. Also the results of the silver percentage of a sample of 44 rare dinheiros of D. Afonso Henriques, D. Sancho I and D. Afonso II are presented.

The type with the "cruz cravada", attributed by some authors to D. Sancho I, has the same epigraphy and chemical composition as the Sancho II dinheiros. We hope that this analysis finally ends the dispute about the attribution.

En este artículo se da a conocer un tenante de altar monolítico con una inscripción de dedicación a San Marcelo hallado en el coto redondo de Herrera, entre las localidades de Proaño y Villar (Hermandad de Campoo de Suso, Cantabria). Fue hallado en 1845 entre las ruinas de una ermita y recuperado por Ángel de los Ríos, quien realizó un primer estudio que nunca vio la luz. Se encuentra depositado desde entonces en la capilla de la Torre de Proaño junto con una parte de las conocidas estelas de Espinilla, con cuyas inscripciones comparte algunas características que pueden ayudar a definir un núcleo epigráfico altomedieval en el sur de Cantabria.

Medieval tomb slabs have aroused, during the Modern Age, a varied interest (of historical, genealogical, epigraphic, antiquarian nature), which found in Rome one of its main centres. The paper deals with the most important steps of this reception, between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries. A turning point in the direction of a more complex interest in these artifacts and their more accurate reproduction can be identified in the unpublished treatise by Francesco Gualdi "Delle memorie sepolcrali" (1640-1644), which had to be illustrated by a hundred woodcuts reproducing almost entirely tomb slabs. On the wake of Gualdi other authors, Roman (Gigli, Valesio) or foreigner (Millin), were engaged in the documentation of plates preserved in the churches of Rome, up to the great scholar of Roman inscriptions, vincenzo Forcella, whose monumental catalogue was originally intended to be accompanied by printed reproductions of tombstones.

Prendendo spunto dalla descrizione di un disegno finora sconosciuto, datato 14 maggio 1832 e raffigurante l'antica borgata di San Gavino, l'Autore analizza diversi aspetti inediti legati alla basilica romanica omonima ed alle architetture del compendio di Monte Agellu, all'epigrafia, alla storia ed all'abbigliamento tradizionale della città di Porto Torres (SS).

En el exconvento agustino del pueblo de Tiripetío, Michoacán, construido por los agustinos entre 1537 y 1540, se encuentran diseminados por todos los restos de los aplanados originales, más de 300 grafitos con motivos que cubren muy diversos temas; flora, fauna, arquitectura, geometría, personajes, escrituras, y otros más. Se trata de una obra pionera en México en el estudio de los grafitos históricos, sustentada en el estudio del propio edificio y del desarrollo social del pueblo a lo largo del siglo XVI.
A lo largo de sus páginas, el lector encontrará los criterios metodológicos que se pensaron exprofeso para esta obra, teniendo presente que los grafitos no son un fenómeno novohispano sino que puede rastrearse al Viejo Mundo. Por ello, se existe una bibliografía de grafitos medievales que sirvieron mucho en su estudio. En este libro, el lector encontrará las imágenes de los grafitos más representativos que se registraron, descritos e interpretados cuando fue posible.
Se tomó la decisión de subir el libro en formato PDF dada la imposibilidad de conseguir ejemplares en el mercado y que el conocimiento que generan las Universidad públicas debe difundirse y llegar a todas las audiencias bajo todos los medios disponibles.

The book deals with the results of archaeological and epigraphic investigations carried out in 2007-2009, in connection with the construction of the Tovuzchay reservoir in Qaziqulu village of Tovuz district. As a result of archaeological explorations in more than 160 ha of the flooded area the prospecting party found and registered archaeological and epigraphic monuments. The registered monuments include the late Bronze - early Iron Age (end of the II - early 1st millennia B.C.) necropolis, the late medieval (XVII-XVIII centuries) settlements and the Qaziqulu Muslim cemetery covering end of the 18th - 20-30s of the XX centuries. Fundamental archaeological excavations were carried out in the necropolis and medieval settlements, considerable material samples were obtained, burial customs were studied and Muslim cemetery was moved to the suitable area.

Kitab Tovuzçay su anbarının tikintisi ilə əlaqədar olaraq Tovuz rayonunun Qazıqulu kəndində 2007-2009-cu illərdə aparılmış arxeoloji-epiqrafik tədqiqatların nəticələrinə həsr olunmuşdur. Arxeoloji kəşfiyyat işlərinin nəticəsi olaraq ümumi sahəsi 160 ha-dan çox olan subasar ərazidə kəşfiyyat qrupu tərəfindən arxeoloji və epiqrafik abidələr tapılmış, qeydiyyata alınmışdır. Qeydə alınmış abidələr son tunc-ilk dəmir dövrünə aid (e.ə. II minilliyin sonu - I minilliyin əvvəli) nekropol, son orta əsrlərə aid (XVII-XVIII əsrlər) yaşayış yerləri və XVIII əsrin sonu – XX əsrin 20-30-cu illərini əhatə edən Qazıqulu müsəlman qəbristanlığından ibarət olmuşdur. Nekropolda və orta əsr yaşayış yerlərində əsaslı arxeoloji qazıntılar aparılmış, xeyli maddi nümunələr əldə edilmiş, dəfn adətləri öyrənilmiş, müsəlman qəbristanlığı isə ayrılmış müvafiq sahəyə köçürülmüşdür.

The cloister of San Pedro el Viejo de Huesca displays an organic and united iconographical program which claims for a lecture in topographical and cartographical terms. Its paschal sense is highly related with the main use of the cloister as graveyard and integrates two capitals with historical and baptismal themes that could be also connected with the aims, temporal and spiritual, of the priory. The article includes some precisions on the cronology and autorship of the work, and a paleographical transcription of its monumental necrologium.

This dissertation examines some 300 signatures and inscriptions from sculptors working in the Late Middle Ages and Renaissance in Italy. The project discusses the signatures broadly in order to provide a context with which to study individual cases in detail. To that end, my analysis begins with a short breakdown of the signatures’ basic information: geographic distribution, date, artist, material. In separate chapters I then devote considerable attention to issues of textual content; placement and location; lettering style; audience and reception; and fundamental social factors, such as the status of sculptors and their works. Ultimately I bring together the information on signatures and related sources to describe some of the notable trends in signing practices during the Middle Ages and Renaissance and what the implications and significance of those trends may be. In particular, I discuss how the increasing standardization and simplicity of many sculptors’ signatures—especially in central Italy—illustrates a sense of collective and communal identity that counters some of the usual assumptions about Medieval collectivism versus Renaissance individualism. For sculptors of fifteenth-century Tuscany, for example, the common motif of signing with “opus + name” (“the work of…”) gave artists the ability to reference both antiquity—as this form of signature survived on the classical Dioscuri statues in Rome—as well as their fellow craftsmen, creating for them a group identity that complemented their status as individual artists. Later, toward the end of the fifteenth century and into the sixteenth, the popularity of signing with the imperfect verb faciebat (“was making”), as Michelangelo did on his St Peter’s Pietà, offered similar possibilities for artists wishing to express their links to both classical antiquity and the best artists of their own time. Through my analysis of individual cases situated within a large body of data—presented in the dissertation’s appendix—I illustrate how Medieval and Renaissance sculptors conveyed identity via a range of signature types. My findings and data thus lay a foundation for future research into artists’ inscriptions.

La iglesia de San Pedro de la Nave es conocida por ser uno de los ejemplos paradigmáticos del arte de época visigoda. Sin embargo, su cronología ha sido recientemente cuestionada desde múltiples perspectivas. Este artículo se centra en definir el estado de la cuestión y el papel que ha tomado la epigrafía en este debate. Finalmente, se intentan dar nuevos argumentos en defensa de la datación de San Pedro de la Nave como iglesia del s. VII.
The church of San Pedro de la Nave is known as one of the paradigmatic examples of Visigothic era’s art. However, its chronology has been recently questioned from multiple perspectives. This article focuses on defining the state of the issue and the role that epigraphy has taken in it. Finally, it tries to give new arguments in defense of the chronology of San Pedro de la Nave as a church of VII century

C’est seulement depuis le milieu du siècle dernier que quelques historiens ont cherché à mettre en chantier une étude de l’écriture latine dans ses formes qui aille au-delà de la description, de la nomenclature et de l’expertise, pour construire des faits plus généraux et identifier de possibles causalités. Ce fascicule de la Bibliothèque de l’École des chartes voudrait renouer avec de semblables perspectives, trop délaissées pendant plusieurs décennies, en réunissant des travaux nouveaux menés notamment autour du Séminaire permanent sur les écritures cursives (Paris, Cambridge et Florence).
Comme toute production conventionnelle, l’écriture est fondamentalement conservatrice et son existence n’est possible que grâce à des traditions, assises sur un enseignement dont les recettes ont remarquablement peu évolué depuis des millénaires. L’imitation est au coeur de ces traditions, mais elle est en même temps ferment de diffusion des changements. Quant à l’invention proprement dite, l’aspect le plus mystérieux sans doute, elle ressortit à des facteurs tout à la fois matériels et culturels, physiques et psychiques, qu’il nous faut oser imaginer.
L’histoire des formes graphiques ne peut être la chronique d’inventions successives ; plutôt l’analyse d’un paysage mouvant, où interfèrent sans cesse, comme dans toute langue, comme dans tout système de conventions sociales, une diversité plus ou moins structurée et son évolution dans le temps. Non pas un arbre généalogique de variétés clairement identifiées, donc, mais plutôt la cartographie d’une tectonique, avec ses dérives insensibles, ses chevauchements, ses failles et ses fractures, ses phases d’immobilité apparente et parfois ses séismes. De cette carte qui reste en grande partie à dessiner, on explorera ici quelques régions, suffisamment diverses, veut-on espérer, pour baliser ou suggérer l’ensemble : par les types d’écriture comme par les époques, les milieux, les matériaux, les techniques, les problèmes.

Cet article propose une synthèse des inscriptions réalisées sur les lames des épées médiévales du XIe au XVe siècle. Y sont notamment abordées les techniques mises en œuvre pour leur réalisation et les différents types d'inscriptions rencontrées sur ces armes.

Viene presentata ai lettori la Colonna Santa, oggi al Museo del Tesoro di San Pietro. La Colonna – considerata nella sua molteplice natura di raffinato elemento architettonico, di oggetto di devozione e di strumento taumaturgico – viene descritta e per quanto possibile contestualizzata. Si illustra il percorso di ricerca di cui essa è stata oggetto a partire dalla fine dell’Ottocento e se ne riassumono per intero tutte le vicende note, dai tempi in cui essa giunse a San Pietro (sec. VIII), fino al momento della sua musealizzazione, intorno ai tre quarti del Novecento. Riguardo a queste vicende si forniscono alcune precisazioni ed elementi di novità. Si pone l’accento sui motivi da cui dipesero tutti gli spostamenti subiti dalla Colonna in Età Moderna, sottolineando il significato dell’accostamento ad essa di altri tesori di devozione della basilica vaticana. Si coglie infine l’occasione per seguire le vicende delle altre colonne vitinee che insieme ad essa componevano la cosiddetta Pergula dell’antica basilica Vaticana, nonché di quelle ad esse affini, un tempo parte della decorazione dell’Oratorio di Giovanni VII.
