This article describes an arts-based intervention program for seven care dyads of elderly persons and their caregivers who are foreign domestic workers (FDWs) in Singapore. The intervention aimed to introduce interdisciplinary tools of artmaking and mindfulness that could be used to improve the communication and relationship between the care dyad and to support the stress reduction and self-care of caregivers. Following a client-based approach, eight sessions were conducted, once weekly, over a 2-month period in hybrid structure, at the home of the care dyad and through the use of Google Meet. Qualitative data were collected in personal interviews, questionnaires, and visual data, and they were connected with art therapists' fieldnotes and reflection journals. At the end of the program, an online feedback session was offered to the elderly participants' family members, and their feedback was collected using a questionnaire. The data analysis confirms the impact of the artmaking intervention on the communication and relationship of the dyad. Participants reported that artmaking combined with mindfulness tools contributed to their understanding of their care-recipient (CR)/caregiver, improved their daily care activities, and helped caregivers explore new ways of self-care and stress relief. The hybrid model of implementation was effective and encouraged caregivers to explore and practice the tools learned independently between sessions. The results of this pilot program inform the development of intervention programs for care dyads as well as training programs for both caregivers, art therapists, and other care professionals. The intervention for care dyads highlights the importance of dyadic care as part of a holistic approach to caregiving. The inclusion of FDWs in the program suggests that both CRs and caregivers are one unit in which their well-being is interdependent. Further research may explore specific artmaking activities for other dyads of caregivers and CRs with differing care needs and backgrounds. Potential training activities and models could support the use of this intervention by therapists and other professionals.

This manual was developed for domestic workers, a growing category of care providers, in the context of the development cooperation project Decent Work and the Care Economy: Recognizing, Rewarding and
Redistributing Care Work (GLO/15/42/FLA), funded by the Government of Flanders. Initially intended for domestic workers working in the Middle East, the manual may be useful also outside the intended geographical scope.

The training manual is targeted to domestic workers’ organizations, civil society and not for profit organizations that provide skills to domestic workers for use with members or domestic workers in the communities where they live and work.

The manual aims to:
1. Empower domestic workers with new skills that will expand the employment opportunities available to them, enable their career progression towards higher complexity tasks within the sector, and mitigate the employment disputes that result from underperformance, excessive emotional attachment to the children in their care, and/or cross-cultural conflicts. It is worth noting here that employers’ perceptions about domestic workers’ performance can be subjective, rooted in classism, casteism or racism, and not solely related to
workers’ actual performance;

2. Build the capacity of domestic workers’ organizations and NGOs working with domestic workers to establish care centres for their members with a view to increasing their chances of engaging in full-time remunerated employment.
The manual provides guidance on setting up care centres that comply with hygiene and safety protocols and are conducive to the physical, economic and emotional development of children; and,

3. Strengthen the role of domestic workers’ organizations in their communities, build their capacity to reach out to new membership, and provide them with a platform to bargain for higher wages for higher skilled domestic workers.
The manual is meant to be accessible to a heterogeneous group of participants some of whom have a very limited educational attainment.
The modules are designed to build on the participants’ training and employment trajectories to identify their point of departure in relation to childcare and subsequently facilitate reflection on the role and competencies of a childcare giver.

"The Criminalization of Immigration: Contexts and Consequences explores these competing narratives and the consequences of criminalizing immigration in the United States and abroad. It examines the impact of national, state, and local legislation on the psychosocial well being of immigrants. The book explores key ways in which immigration is criminalized, and examines how the problematization of immigration becomes a political tool. The first chapters of the book explore the criminalization of immigration through the lens of pacification and the theater of cruelty. In both chapters, the authors seek to understand the process of “othering” members of the immigrant population to exact social control and to mollify the public. These front chapters set the tone for remainder of the book. They provide the impetus for why states have enacted, or have attempted to enact state level immigration laws that make it nearly impossible for the undocumented to live within the boundaries of these states. In section two, three U.S. states are highlighted: Arizona, Alabama, and Indiana. While the chapters on Arizona and Alabama summarize key aspects of state laws, author Sujey Vega highlights the life of one undocumented immigrant as she navigates life in the Heartland.

The book then turns its focus to the criminalization of immigration in a socio-political context. Here, four chapters provide explorations of the criminalization of immigration on labor standards enforcement, immigrant detention, the right wing perspective in the United States and in Europe, and white supremacy. Labor standards impact the rate by which undocumented immigrants are paid, which in turn impacts their health and safety within and outside the workplace, protections from workplace discrimination, and collective activity protections. The criminalization of immigration erodes many of the workplace and labor protections that we have come to view as essential. Similarly, the privatization of corrections has influenced the incarceration and detention of many undocumented immigrants and has even influenced the very laws described in section two of this book. If not for the possibility of profiting off of the detention of the undocumented, many of immigration related laws would not have come to fruition.

The next section of the book provides a transnational and international context to the criminalization of immigration. With chapters focusing on human rights violations, the transnational dimensions of Mexican migration, the making of the Maras, and the criminalization of immigration in the United Kingdom, these chapters ask the reader to examine the criminalization of immigration from a broader perspective. The reader learns how national issues become international and, likewise how international immigration issues influence national policy.

The final chapters of the book put the human face on the criminalization of immigration. Each chapter represents a case study of a specific aspect of the criminalization of immigration. They approach the issue from the viewpoint of a day laborer, an undocumented woman who has become a victim of domestic violence, a child whose parents are undocumented, and a detention officer who wrestles with his decisions to continue his job. Regardless of which chapters one reads, the raw emotion felt by placing oneself in each context is overwhelming.

Overall, The Criminalization of Immigration: Contexts and Consequences provides a complete examination of an issue that cuts through emotional value conflicts. It provides the facts and knowledge essential for a fair and balanced debate"

In June 2011, the 100th Session of the International Labour Convention adopted the Domestic Workers Convention (No. 189) 2011 (C189). C189 entered into force in September 2013.
Further to the entry into force of C189, this paper evaluates the regulation of domestic work. It approaches this topic from an international and national perspective. An international perspective in this context means the regulation of domestic work as an international labour standard by the International Labour Organization (ILO). Its national perspective entails the
various models of national regulation in three countries- South Africa, Namibia and Indonesia.

A distinct problem of regulating domestic work is the opinion in most societies that it is not a form of employment. This has been reinforced by early economic theories that portray it as
unproductive and non-contributory to the wealth of nations. This fosters its undervalued nature and poor regulation. Conversely, studies reflect that domestic workers have confidence in the dignity of their industry and labour. This necessitates recognition, respect, proper regulation and
protection. In giving credence to the notion that domestic work
deserves recognition, respect, proper regulation and protection, this paper focuses on the evaluation of the concept of domestic work;; its regulation as an international labour standard within the ‘social justice’ and ‘decent work’ paradigm of the International Labour Organization (ILO) and a comparative
analysis of national regulations on domestic work in South Africa, Namibia and Indonesia. It does this to give a general understanding of the subject.

In recent years, regulating domestic work has been a popular topic within international labour law circles. However, the popularity of this discussion is not reflected in the working lives of a majority of domestic workers worldwide. Therefore, this paper reiterates specific issues that affect the lives of domestic workers. The paper does this by highlighting the evolution of
domestic work, and its specificity in relation with inequality theories of Marxist feminists. It evaluates features such as the employment relationship and the live-in challenge, migration for
domestic work and the role of Private Employment Agencies (PEAs). It also highlights the size and significance of domestic work and its impact on the world economy and enumerates major issues related to the features of domestic work that pose a challenge for standard setting in the domestic work sector.

With reference to the work of Adelle Blackett and the ILO, the paper analyses the rationale for international regulation of domestic work. It gives a synopsis of the context in which domestic work is regulated as an international standard and enumerates Conventions relevant to its regulation. Based on C189, the paper enumerates core labour standards that are essential to the international regulation of domestic work.
With a view to acknowledging the importance of institutions that promote social justice, this paper contains a comparative analysis of the existing legislative framework available for domestic work regulation in South Africa, Namibia and Indonesia. The paper focuses on pieces of legislation as a means of regulation and assesses the mode of regulation in each country. These legislative frameworks are also compared with C189 to measure the extent of their regulatory
prowess.

This paper also deals with the quest for thorough compliance and queries the sufficiency of a legislative framework in domestic work regulation. It rationalizes the importance of the ILO Decent Work Agenda and Declarations for domestic worker protection. The paper concludes by highlighting that National legislation of ILO member states have to be fine-tuned or amended to accommodate the protection of domestic workers in line with ILO requirements. Domestic workers need to be enlightened to enable them properly understand their rights and seek protection and enforcement. Finally, this paper generally reaffirms the notion that domestic work can be properly regulated on the foundation of social justice.
