Despite their historical significance to the UK's nursing profession, numbers of registered male nurses here have seldom exceeded 10% of the total. This is not an immutable principle, given that countries such as the Netherlands manage to attract males to the profession in much greater numbers. This paper examines and critiques the available literature on males in nursing from both a historical and present day perspective. In so doing, it discusses factors such as caring, over-performance and career progression, and, notions of masculinity. It then moves on to outline and discuss an on-going pilot study specifically designed to examine the motivations and experiences of a sample of preregistration and postregistration male nurses in the UK, across a range of ages and ethnicities. The aim of this paper was to explore the patients' experiences of hope during the first months following acute spinal cord injury. This qualitative study has a descriptive and explorative design. Data were collected by personal interviews (N = 10) at a rehabilitation centre in Norway. A phenomenological-hermeneutic approach inspired by Ricoeur was used to extract the meaning content of the patients' experiences. The findings revealed one main interpretation; the awakening of hope, expressed by two themes: hope and despair, and uncertainty. Awakening hopes, even sometimes silent hopes, constituted a contextual background in the immediate aftermath of spinal cord injury.

U.S. military forces are increasingly involved in a variety of multinational peacekeeping and humanitarian assistance missions. How well combat-trained units and soldiers adapt to these new roles will determine U.S. success in such operations, as well as the future health and readiness of the force. In preparing soldiers for such missions, it is critical that leaders and health care providers have a clear understanding of the nature of the stressors they are likely to encounter. This report summarizes findings from a longitudinal, descriptive case study of a U.S. Army medical unit performing a peacekeeping mission in the former Yugoslavia. This article briefly outlines the structures and practices of Italian military discipline during the First World War. The Italian army became known for the harshness of its repressive policies, even by the standards of other contemporary armies. Italian troops continued to assert their own agency in a variety of forms of indiscipline throughout the war.

This descriptive study was based on Dimond's Bereavement Adaptation Model; investigation was made of the relationship between hope, concurrent losses, coping style, setting (hospital, hospice, nursing home), and grief resolution. Seventy-five elderly persons who had been widowed 12–18 months completed the Herth Hope Scale, the Jalowiec Coping Scale, and the Grief Resolution Index by mail. A significant positive relationship was found between effective grief resolution and a high hope level; 0–1 concurrent losses; the use of confrontive, optimistic, palliative, supportant, and self-reliant coping styles; and the death of the spouse within a hospice setting. The importance of the type of setting, hope level, and specific coping styles on grief resolution in the elderly widow(er) is suggested by the findings.

Social support research has been hampered by a lack of clarity both in the definitions of social support and in the conceptualization of its effects on health outcomes. The present study compared social network size and three types of perceived social support—tangible, emotional, and informational —in relation to stressful life events, psychological symptoms and morale, and physical health status in a sample of 100 persons 45–64 years old. Social network size was empirically separable from, though correlated with, perceived social support and had a weaker overall relationship to outcomes than did support. Low tangible support and emotional support, in addition to certain life events, were independently related to depression and negative morale; informational support was associated with positive morale. Neither social support nor stressful life events were associated with physical health. It was concluded that social support research would benefit from attention to the multidimensionality of support and greater specificity in hypotheses about the relationship between types of support and adaptational outcomes.

Depuis son premier ouvrage, Descartes parle souvent de la musique, et sa théorie musicale occupe une place non négligeable dans sa philosophie. La musique est considérée depuis l’Antiquité grecque comme science de la mathématique appliquée, et Descartes, en suivant cette tradition, fonde sa théorie musicale sur l’arithmétique, avec le style de la démonstration mathématique. Mais pour les questions abordées, il faut considérer aussi l’esthétique, la physique, la physiologie, et la morale. D’ailleurs, l’argument de Descartes est infl uencé par les domaines divers de son intérêt du moment. Il faut donc suivre le développement de sa philosophie entière pour comprendre sa théorie musicale. Quoique celle-ci reste inachevée, une conclusion hypothétique serait supposable d’après les thèses de ses dernières années. Cet article a pour but d’envisager le sens philosophique de la musique chez Descartes.

RÉSUMÉ

Pessoa n’a jamais écrit de texte sur Baudelaire à proprement parler, et pourtant toute sa poésie est nourrie de celle de l’auteur des Fleurs du mal. Du spleen baudelairien à la saudade et au desassossego pessoens, c’est tout un jeu intertextuel qui s’est installé, fait d’emprunts précis comme d’allusions plus vagues. Deux poètes, deux écritures que tout sépare, mais une parenté secrète et douloureuse qui unit l’un à l’autre.

ABSTRACT

Pessoa never wrote, strictly speaking, a text on Baudelaire, and yet all his poetry is nourished by that of the author of Les Fleurs du mal. From the Baudelairian spleen to the Pessoan saudade and desassossego (disquiet), a whole intertextual game has been set up, made of precise borrowings as well as more vague allusions. Two poets, two writings that everything separates, but with a secret and painful kinship that unites one to the other.

Les traces d’un temps perdu, comme de nombreuses autres expériences vécues sont présentes à Montserrat. Elles se logent pour notre propos dans le portrait du moraliste Jean de La Fontaine (1621 – 1695) qui se trouve ici en compagnie de son épouse Marie Héricart (1633-1709). On peut considérer que La Fontaine se trouve exilé en Catalogne comme dans une tragédie, et là il ne vieillit pas, notamment lorsqu’il dénonce les injustices comme dans la fable Le Loup et l'Agneau (1668) proposée aux enseignants pour l'éducation morale et civique des enfants. La monarchie a été balayée par le temps alors qu’il se trouve des siècles plus tard étonnamment présent en Catalogne victime d’une juridiction composée de juges serviles comme l’ont été de nombreux catalans.

This paper explores the role of Italian generals in the opening phases of the battle of Caporetto, 1917. While mass surrender has traditionally been read as a symptom of defeatism and low morale, there are other possible interpretations. By analysing incidents of mass surrender the article offers an operational and institutional explanation for the Italian defeat. Poor leadership and panicked decision-making by senior Italian officers played an important part in the outcome of the battle.

The present study tested both a stress-problem-solving model and a stress-social support model in the etiology of depressive symptoms, hopelessness, and suicide ideation for a group of Asian international students in the United States. Problem-solving skills and social support were hypothesized as two mediators between life stress and depressive symptoms, hopelessness, and suicide ideation. The results from a series of stepwise regression analyses and a path analysis support the hypotheses, indicating that these models generalized to a sample of Asian international students. The roles of social support and problem-solving skills in depressive symptoms and hopelessness are discussed. The results also suggest that hopelessness may serve as a cognitive factor directly affecting depressive symptoms and indirectly affecting suicide ideation.

Research has identified a number of negative societal perceptions of nursing related to gendered stereotyping, subordination to doctors, low academic standards, limited career opportunities and poor pay and conditions, and importantly how these perceptions may affect levels of recruitment into nursing. Focusing specifically on nurses, research has also considered the extent to which these societal perceptions are realities in their workplaces, and the direct experiences that contribute to attrition from both nursing courses and jobs. However, to date, few research has actually bridged the above approaches and considered the perceptions that nursing students hold as they first enter their education and how these change, or are confirmed, as a result of their experiences. Several studies have found the antecedents of conflicts and its impacts on many aspects of the organizations e.g. performance, environment and productivity etc. The goal of this study was to find which of the interpersonal conflict resolution approach has significant relationship with morale of the academicians of the universities in Pakistan.
