Often simply called the Holy Mountain, Mount Athos was the most famous center of Byzantine monasticism and remains the spiritual heart of the Orthodox Church today. This volume presents the Lives of Euthymios the Younger, Athanasios of Athos, Maximos the Hutburner, Niphon of Athos, and Philotheos. These five holy men lived on Mount Athos at different times from its early years as a monastic locale in the ninth century to the last decades of the Byzantine period in the early fifteenth century. All five were celebrated for asceticism, clairvoyance, and, in most cases, the ability to perform miracles; Euthymios and Athanasios were also famed as founders of monasteries.

Holy Men of Mount Athos illuminates both the history and the varieties of monastic practice on Athos, individually by hermits as well as communally in large monasteries. The Lives also demonstrate the diversity of hagiographic composition and provide important glimpses of Byzantine social and political history.

All the Lives in this volume are presented for the first time in English translation, together with authoritative editions of their Greek texts.

Această carte transcrie rezumativ predarea prin viu grai a vieţii monahale trăite de autor alături de Gheron Iosif Isihastul. Învăţătura orală a acestuia a fost esenţializată de Gheronda Iosif Vatopedinul în densele capitole care alcătuiesc volumul de faţă. În acest sens, aici găsim liniile principale ale învăţăturii Bătrânului Mănăstirii Vatopedului, testamentul său duhovnicesc, chintesenţa unei gândiri filocalice contemporane, formate din experienţă şi adăpate la izvoarele primenitoare ale marilor Părinţi duhovniceşti din toate vremurile. Toate atributele care pot fi acordate acestei scrieri se sintetizează într-o singură expresie: cuget patristic.

Leone il Grande fu abate del monastero da lui fondato per alcuni anni, non oltre il novembre 991. Gli archivi benedettini del X e XI secolo non menzionano il proprio cenobio sul Monte Athos. Tuttavia essi ci offrono precise, pur se indirette, informazioni sul periodo iniziale e preziosi indizi sul complesso rapporto che intercorse fra Benevento e Montecassino attraverso Apothikon. In particolare, veniamo informati che il trentesimo abate dell'abbazia laziale era stato in precedenza uno dei primi monaci di Apothikon, dove arrivò a causa di uno scandalo. Sappiamo infatti dalla Chronica monasterii Casinensis che, mentre il monastero benedettino athonita era governato dall'abate Giovanni, un altro Giovanni - Giovanni il Beneventano (Joannes Beneventanus) - vi trovò rifugio. La sua permanenza si protrasse dal 993-994 al 996. Giovanni il Beneventano era fuggito da Montecassino, in una data fra il 14 novembre 985 e l'8 maggio 986, non appena Mansone fu nominato ventottesimo abate con un atto di nepotismo.

東洋の修行法において、呼吸は極めて重要な位置を占めている。インド思想では、調気法prANAyAmaが成立する以前より、呼吸は生命の象徴としてとらえれ、ウパニシャッドでそれが成立して以降は、ヨーガや仏教において、心の働きを鎮め、解脱に導くものとして、多様に実践されてきた。
　中国の老荘思想でも、その意味こそ異なれど、健康を築く養生法としてさまざまに実践されてきた。我々日本人は、仏教だけでなく、大陸の文化、特に道教の思想的影響を強く受けている。そもそも、何気なく使っている「呼吸」という語そのものが『荘子』に由来するといわれている。
　また、呼吸のあり方を考えた場合、その属性について、胸式によるものか腹式によるものか（胸息－腹息）、腹息時の入息の際に腹部が膨らむか凹むか（順息－逆息）、出息の際に長いか短いか（長息－短息）、呼吸量が多いか少ないか（深息－浅息）、入息、出息それぞれを鼻孔を経て行うか口を経て行うか（鼻息－口息）、呼吸のテンポが速いか遅いか（速息－遅息）など、様々な要素を含んでいる(2)。
　本稿は、こうした基本的かつ重要な項目について、いくつかの思想、文化で重視されてきた呼吸に関わる実践(調気法や呼吸法等)について、統合的にまとめてみた覚え書きである。尚、インド・仏教思想と老荘思想では用語の概念に違いがあるため、一般的意味での息を表す場合は呼吸(呼吸法)とし、『荘子』にかかわるような道教的な養生法を表す場合には「呼吸」(「呼吸法」)、インド精神史におけるヨーガの行法のひとつとして表す場合は、調気法と記して区分することとする。

Статья посвящена изложению взглядов различных греческих православных богословов XX–XXI вв. на проблему влияния латинской богословской традиции на мысль преподобного Никодима Святогорца (1749–1809). Наиболее ярким критиком св. Никодима
выступил доктор философии Х. Яннарас в своей книге «Православие и Запад в Новейшей Греции». В работе приводятся оценки высказываний Яннараса со стороны других
исследователей творчества преподобного Никодима, а также их аргументы за и против
высказанной позиции. Изложению полемики вокруг наследия Святогорца предшествует небольшое историческое введение. В работе представлены взгляды двух групп
богословов относительно влияния латинской схоластики на творчество св. Никодима.
Одна, более многочисленная группа, считает это влияние незначительным и поверхностным, другая полагает, что латинская традиция оставила в наследии Святогорца
гораздо более глубокий след. Материал для обсуждения проблемы представлен главным образом текстами одной из самых знаменитых книг св. Никодима — «Руководство к исповеди» (Ἐξομολογητάριον). Русский перевод последней увидел свет в Москве
в 2017 г. В связи с этим проблема рецепции Русской Церковью богословия и аскетики
одного из виднейших деятелей движения колливадов стала для нас в полный рост.

Афонские монастыри с X в. были крупнейшими землевладельцами. В XVII–XVIII вв. они получили в дар огромные поместья в Молдавии и Валахии, доходы с которых позволили монастырям приобретать новые угодья в Македонии и на островах Эгейского моря. В монастырских архивах сохранилось множество договоров о купле-продаже земельных участков. В большинстве актов (как принято называть такие документы) указаны дата заключения договора и место расположения покупаемого участка. Как показывает пилотное исследование, проведенное на материале случайно отобранных шести документов (датируются от 1668 до 1727 гг.), в афонских актах встречаются интересные языковые особенности, которые могут быть важны и для исторической грамматики новогреческого языка, и для исторической диалектологии.

Monasteries from Mount Athos became rich landowners in the 10th century. About 700–800 years later rich lands were donated to them in Moldavia and Walachia. Because of the new income, it became possible for them to buy new terrains in Macedonia and islands in Aegean. Monastic archives still have many land sale agreements (so called “Acts”) in which the exact date of deal and location of the terrain is recorded. This paper presents some results of a preliminary study of six randomly chosen documents (dating from 1668 to 1727) and describes some linguistic features that are interesting and important for both historical grammar of Modern Greek and Greek historical dialectology.

At the end of Russia’s old regime, the transformation of society initiated
by the Great Reforms of the 1860s had also transformed the Orthodox
Church. After the Emancipation, former serfs found new opportunities
as laborers, factory workers, entrepreneurs, and even priests, monks, and holy men. Vasilii Karpovich Podgornyi was one such serf who, after Emancipation, became a successful businessman. Inspired by  traditional piety he used his entrepreneurial skills to create networks of religious communities, primarily composed of pious women. Podgornyi’s remarkable success sharply split the church hierarchy. Some conservative hierarchs regarded this former serf as a suspicious figure, a pervert who took advantage of his female followers. Because of such accusations, Podgornyi spent ten years in a monastic prison. Other clergy, including Podgornyi’s monastic jailers, became his strong  advocates and ultimately succeeded in seeing him freed from prison. Podgornyi’s movement, however, remained controversial and illustrates the sharp social tensions within the church before the Bolshevik Revolution.

  Cartea de faţă cuprinde Cuvinte ale Bătrânilor din Athos. Avem însă de-a face cu Părinţi din vremurile noastre, de curând mutaţi la Domnul, dar care, precum va şi vedea cititorul, sunt plini de buna mireasmă a lui Hristos şi a libertăţii duhovniceşti la care au ajuns plinind Evanghelia Lui. Trăitori cu toţii în Grădina Maicii Domnului, cuvioşii cuprinşi în acest volum au fost cercetaţi de monahul Damaschin din mănăstirea Cuviosului Grigorie, care, asemeni Sfântului Ioan Casian, a cules nectarul acestor flori şi, insuflat de Duhul Sfânt, l-a pus în scris, ca să se împărtăşească dintr-însul şi cei aflaţi în deşertul duhovnicesc al lumii.

This paper considers the emergence of Mount Athos' monk elders in Greek society in recent decades until the current economic crisis. Their social influence has grown over these decades, especially after some of them were recognized as charismatic and gerontismos (elderism) became one of the most important forms of religious discourse in contemporary Greek society. These elders were presented as a kind of cultural resistance in the service of an alternative economy of desire. This analysis suggests that they have ultimately worked in the service of a series of individual or collective fantasies of power and pleasure within Greek society. The theoretical tools informing this analysis are the product of a dialog between symbolic anthropology and Lacanian theory.

В истории «даров волхвов» из монастыря святого Павла на Афоне можно проследить по историческим источникам следующие периоды: 1) «дароносивые златые сосуды, иже принесоша Христу с дары волсви» в XI-XII вв. хранились в ризнице св. Софии; 2) в 1470 г. Мара Бранкович, дочь сербского деспота Георгия Бранковича и Ирины Кантакузины, жена османского султана Мурата II, принесла «дароносивые златые сосуды, иже принесоша Христу с дары волсви» в дар сербскому монастырю св. Павла на Афоне, о чем гласил турецкий фирман, утраченный во время пожара 1902 г.; 3) в XVI-XVII вв. «дароносивые златые сосуды, иже принесоша Христу с дары волсви» были переделаны в золотой пояс, насчитывающий 9 золотых пластин и 69 бусин из смеси ладана и смирны; 4) после 1744 г., когда монастырь св. Павла вновь заселили греки, число пластин увеличилось до 28, а бусин убавилось на 7.

Дисертація є дослідженням історичних духовно-культурних зв’язків України і Афону та діяльності українських духовних осередків на Афоні як в середньовічні, так і ранньомодерні часи, зокрема у XVII – перш. трет. ХІХ ст.
У рамках дисертаційного дослідження на основі аналізу широкого кола архівних джерел та опублікованих матеріалів у роботі розкрито специфіку зародження та розвитку українсько-афонських духовно-культурних зв’язків, їхній вплив на відродження православного руху в Україні та подальші церковні, культурні і політичні процеси в Україні протягом XVII – XVІII ст. Сукупність цих та інших історичних подій сприяла заснуванню та діяльності у XVІІІ ст. чотирьох українських чернечих осередків на Афоні, зосереджених у скитах Чорний Вир та пророка Іллі, Костянтинівській обителі та в монастирі Симонопетра, їхнім зв’язкам з українським козацтвом та чернецтвом, участі Запорозької та Задунайської Січі у ктиторській підтримці цих обителей тощо. Встановлено, що це сприяло як зміцненню контактів з центром православного чернецтва на Афоні, так і посиленню його популярності серед українського чернецтва та козацтва, забезпечуючи взаємний духовний і культурний обмін і вплив один на одного.
Наукова новизна полягає в тому, що у дисертаційному дослідженні використані маловідомі архівні джерела, на основі яких комплексно досліджено процес заснування і діяльності українських чернечих осередків на Афоні у XVIII – перш. трет. ХІХ ст., їх зв’язків з українським чернецтвом та козацтвом в Україні. Наголошено, що українські афонські обителі, зокрема скити «Чорний Вир» та пророка Іллі, є важливою складовою історії, духовної культури і спадщини українського чернецтва на Афоні, прямим свідченням тісних зв’язків Запорозької та Задунайської Січі з Афоном. Зазначено, що ці історико-культурні та архітектурні пам’ятники присутності українського чернецтва та козацтва на Афоні мають духовно-культурну і науково-історичну цінність. Подальше вивчення феномену української присутності на Афоні є одним з перспективних напрямків у сучасній українській науці. Також це сприятиме формуванню українського афонознавства як окремого наукового напрямку.

SUMMARY

Shumylo S. V. The Development of Spiritual and Cultural Ties between Ukraine and Athos from the Seventeenth Century to the First Third of the Nineteenth Century. – Qualifying scientific work on the basis of manuscripts.

Shumylo’s thesis explores the history of the spiritual and cultural ties between Ukraine and Athos, and the activity of Athonite spiritual centres in both mediaeval and earlymodern times – from the seventeenth century to the first third of the nineteenth century.
Drawing on a wide range of archival and published documents, it outlines the onset and development of the spiritual and cultural ties between Ukraine and Athos, and shows how these ties influenced the Ukrainian Orthodox revival giving rise to ecclesiastical, cultural and political developments in Ukraine from the seventeenth to the eighteenth centuries.
In particular, the influence of Athos hesychastic tradition during this period was important for further spiritual awakening and cultural development in the Ukrainian lands. Athos monks joined the restoration and spread of hesychasm traditions within the Kyiv metropolitanate, making a significant contribution to the formation of ancient Ukrainian culture, literature and art.
It was found that in the late XVI - early XVII centuries (after the events of the Brest Union in 1596) Ukrainian Athos monks took an active part in the revival of Orthodoxy in Ukraine, joined the restoration of the Orthodox hierarchy of the Kyiv metropolitanate, reforming Ukrainian Orthodox monasteries, cultural and educational, literary and polemical activities, as well as contributed to the involvement of the Ukrainian Cossacks in defending the rights and freedom of the Orthodox religion in the Commonwealth.
It is proved that during the second half of the XVII and XVIII centuries the spiritual and cultural ties of the Ukrainian monasticism and the Cossacks with Athos became noticeably more active. An important role was played by the Ukrainian Cossack foreman, who considered his participation in the material support of Athos monasteries as a certain attribute of his status. Analysis of sources shows that donors of Athos monasteries during the Hetmanate were often Ukrainian hetmans and Cossack officers.
These developments led to the foundation of four flourishing Ukrainian monastic sights on Athos: the Cherny Vir and Prophet Elijah Sketes, the St Constantine Kellion and within Simonopetra Monastery. Ukrainian Cossacks and monks played an important part here, as did benefactors from Zaporozh´ya and Zadunayskaya Sech´. The thesis shows that these ties increased the popularity of Athonite monasticism with the Cossacks and in Ukraine, facilitating mutual spiritual and cultural exchange.
In particular, it was found out that the monastery "Black Whirlpool" was an important Ukrainian center on Mount Athos, and its founders were Ukrainian monks and representatives of the Cossack elders. The monks in this monastery were mostly natives of Ukrainian lands, in particular the former Zaporozhian Cossacks. The existence of close contacts of the Chorny Vyr hermitage with the Zaporozhian Sich and of the waterway from Zaporozhye to Mount Athos in the XVIII century is proved. The results of the study allow us to assert the importance of Ilyinsky monastery, which was also founded by Ukrainian elder Paisiy Velychkovsky, in the history of monasticism on Mount Athos. In that monastery he established his own seminary, and the monastery itself became a center of spirituality, education and literature on Mount Athos and beyond. Later, the Ilyinsky monastery became the spiritual and cultural center of the Ukrainian Cossack emigration, where former Zaporozhian Cossacks from the Transdanubian Sich and Kuban struggled. The decline and devastation of Ukrainian monastic centers on Mount Athos are consequences of the events of the Greek national liberation revolution of 1821–1829.
The thesis is original because it draws on little-known archival sources of the eighteenth to the first third of the nineteenth centuries. It establishes the defining role of the Ukrainian Athonite cloisters – especially of Cherny Vir and the Prophet Elijah Skete – in the history, culture and heritage of Ukrainian monasticism on Athos; and it demonstrates the strong links between the Zaporoz`ka and Zadunayska Sich´ with the Holy Mountain. The presence of Ukrainian and Cossack monks has left significant cultural and architectural traces on Mount Athos. Further study of the Ukrainian Athonite presence is an avenue to be explored by Ukrainian scholars.

This article looks at the encounters between the hesychast and Ignatian traditions. What elements of agreement are there and how can two apparently quite distinct traditions be placed side by side? The article starts with a brief introduction to the two traditions and suggests that spiritual traditions offer the chance for experience to meet experience.  It then look in more detail at some features of the hesychast and Ignatian traditions: their Christocentric emphasis, their relationship to the Scriptures, their views on discipleship, on the church and on the world. The article concludes by asking what it means to speak about either tradition or innovation in terms of spirituality and whether spirituality can serve as a test case for the discussion around the nature of tradition and innovation.

This article deals with certain aspects of the systematic correction of the
Church Slavonic translation of the Great Canon of Repentance by St. Andrew of Crete, performed in the beginning of the 14th century in the monasteries of Mount Athos, and of the further history of the resulting redaction. The problems concerning the Slavonic text being corrected, the Greek text used as a model for the correction as well as the lexical changes performed in the process of the correction are discussed. Special attention is given to the presence of several troparia from the
Canon of the St. Theodore the Studite in the end of certain odes of the Great Canon in the Athonite version.

This paper presents the missing aspect of the theology of St Maximus
the Greek that is organically connected with his biographical destiny. Especially are considered the circumstances of the second trial against St. Maximus the Greek in 1531. The author focuses on the accusation of supposed heretical mistakes in his translation of the text “Тhe Hagiography of the Mother of God” from Menologion of Symeon Metaphrastos. Consequently it is provided the textual analyse of his selected works that show a significant attachment to the Holy
Trinity with a special attention, dedicated also to veneration of Mother of God. Of particular interest here is the tradition of the Byzantine hymnography reflected in the works of St. Maximus the Greek, mainly in those that are defined as prayers, confessions and theological polemics that showed his prayer fully veneration of the Mother of God. Obviously, an Athonite monk understood the Mother of God as a part of the orthodox Holy Trinity, which he explained in his texts. He often supported his arguments for the holiness of the Mother of
God with exegetic examples from the Holy Scripture. Indeed, the verses from the Byzantine hymnographical odes, dedicated to the Virgin Mary and which flourished in the Holy Vatopedi monastery, as well as in the Athonite period of the monk Maximus, present the essence of the works and personal theology of Maximus the Greek. Therefore, this unique monastic worldview, which combined very different sources of Christian knowledge (the Holy Scripture, hymnography, liturgy, patristic, iconography, and hagiography), was also marked by the special consideration of the Mother of God in Orthodox theology, which
together make the theological system of Saint Maximus the Greek so original.

In  the  Archive  of  Xeropotamou  Monastery  a  letter  (June  19,  1906)
by the renowned teacher of Byzantine music Petros Philanthides (1840-
1915) is kept. With this letter Philanthides forwarded to the monks of
Xeropotamou  a  Doxastikon  glorifying  the  patrons  of  the  Holy  Forty
Martyrs set to music, the text of which  the monks had sent him on that
purpose. In the present article the text of the letter and the information
contained in it concerning the said Doxastikon, which remains unidenti-
Úed, as well as the relations of Philanthides with the speciÚc monastery
and the acceptance of his work from the monks of Xeropotamou and in
general the Athonites, are commented.

Apart from their productive and financial role, the athonite metochia, and especially those which were established in urban environments, were distinguished also for another function which corresponds to the spiritual nature of Athonite monasticism, which has not been studied and provided sufficiently. It’s their function as centres of spiritual activity. In this context we can place, especially during the period of the Ottoman occupation, some well educated athonite monks who were activated and distinguished during their stay as representatives or abbots of some athonite metochia in orthodox countries such as the principality of Valachia or Russia as authors of books, copyists of manuscripts, correctors of printed books in printing shops, teachers of schools and famous scholars as well.
In close relation to the presense of these athonite scholars we can add the function of libraries with not only liturgical books for the daily services but also for the needs of their spiritual and scholarly interests. The books which belonged to these libraries were either transferred there from the principal athonite monasteries or were written or bought from the athonite oikonomoi and in some cases were finally incorporated to the great libraries of Mount Athos monasteries.

O alegere ca aceea a Capetelor despre dragoste, făcută de Părintele Emilianos Simonopetritul pentru a le tâlcui fiilor și fiicelor sale duhovnicești, nu poate fi pusă pe seama întâmplării, mai ales că textele filocalice care așteptau o explicare nu-i lipseau. Această scriere a Sfântului Maxim Mărturisitorul reprezintă, după părerea erudiților, cea mai completă scriere a sa despre viața duhovnicească, fiind totodată și cea mai cunoscută printre nespecialiști, şi că tematica ei duhovnicească bogată a făcut-o extrem de căutată, astfel încât Sfântul Nicodim Aghioritul a ținut să o includă în Filocalia sa, editată în anul 1782.
  Într-un moment istoric al Bisericii, când „lipseşte cel cuvios şi s-au împuţinat adevărurile de la fiii oamenilor“, cum este cel de azi, moment în care asistăm la o sporire a aşteptărilor faţă de posibilităţile cazone ale „întăririi disciplinei“, a regulamentelor sau a statutelor şi reformelor administrative, de a „înviora“ viaţa duhovnicească în mănăstiri şi nu numai, comentariul Părintelui Emilianos vine, providenţial, să precizeze raportul just dintre faptele noastre de evlavie şi plinătatea legăturii în Duhul Sfânt cu Dumnezeu.

The article presents a study and edition of the Slavic text of a letter that provides previously unknown details about the psycho-physical method of prayer used by the fourteenth-century hesychasts. The research shows that it was written on Mount Athos between 1371 and 1392 by a follower of Romil of Vidin. The text soon made its way to Muscovy where it played an important role in disseminating the ascetic practices of Athonite hesychasm. Послание Феоктиста, списки которого часто встречаются в рукописных сборниках аскетико-монашеского и уставного содержания, содержит важные сведения о душевно-телесном способе молитвы, характерном для поздневизантийского исихазма. В статье выяснены время и место написания послания, личность его автора и язык оригинала. На основе изучения более 60 списков сочинения воссоздана история текста и подготовлено комментированное издание.

Tâlcuirile la Psalmi ale Părintelui Emilianos ne fac să întrezărim mai bine statura duhovnicească a Părintelui. Tâlcuirile, prin metodă şi duh, sunt în deplină continuitate cu exegeza biblică a marilor Părinţi ai Bisericii, că sunt o actualizare a conţinutului Scripturii, o aplicare a ei directă la situaţiile concrete prin care treceau obştile monahale ale lui Gheronda Emilianos. Dacă cel ce proroceşte, potrivit Apostolului, „vorbeşte oamenilor spre zidire, îndemn şi mângâiere“ (1 Cor. 14, 3), putem spune
că Tâlcuirile mustesc de duh profetic. Acest duh profetic aduce textul psalmilor în legătură cu împrejurările, ca rod al întâlnirii dintre ostenelile filocalice ale Părintelui şi lucrarea Duhului, care descoperă înţelesurile de trebuinţă momentului. The spiritual tradition of hesychasm is arguably one of the most distinguishable features of Athonite monasticism. This chapter explores hesychasm’s deep intertwining with Mount Athos, by following its historical unfolding from its inception in the 14th century to its instrumental role in the 20th century Athonite renewal.

Monastic life at Mount Athos  today claims to merely continue the same age-old traditions that have been at work on the peninsula for the past thousand years. This article argues that during the last few decades, Athonite monasticism has undergone a noticeable shift in orientation, becoming more pragmatic and increasingly preoccupied with the noetic experience here and now. What are the signs of this shift? How is this new approach reflected in practice? What are some of the possible causes behind it?

Our recent research in the mss and old printed books of the Library of the monastery of Annunciation at the place Leukada of Ikaria island, brought to light some new evidence for the early history of this monastery, related to the kollyvadic origins of its founders saints Nephon and Makarios Notaras.
 In this paper at first we present some testimonies  preserved in the Κώδιξ (i.e. the ms with historical information and archival material) of the monastery about the first monks who followed Nephon or travelled there during the first decades after its foundation. Moreover, in two mss we found an old narration about the kollyvadic controversy in mount Athos, which has close relation to Athanasios' Parios Δήλωσις. Finally, special interest present the old printed books of two of the most important kollyvadic publications, Philokalia (1782) and Pedalion (Τhe Rudder) which belonged to hieromonk Agathon from Chios, the successor of Nephon at the hegumenate of the monastery. Philokalia is divided in two parts, as it was planned to be published by its two editors, Sts Makarios Notaras and Nikodemos Hagiorite. Great interest presents the copy of the first publication of the canonical collection of Pedalion (1800). In one of its first pages we found an unknown text written by Athanasios Parios  which he addresses to the readers of the book, condemning the additions made in special chapters of the book by hieromonk Theodoretos. Moreover, in pp. 97-99 there was added a handwritten Certification of the content of the book which is dated to 1802s and is assigned to the ex-patriarch of Constantinople Neophytos VII.

Cartea de faţă cuprinde o biografie a Bătrânului Iosif, precum şi câteva scrisori ale sale, până astăzi needitate. În primul rând, deci, o biografie epistolară, o scrisoare trimisă de Părintele nostru duhovnicesc Iosif Vatopedinul (ucenic direct al Cuviosului) către un frate care vroia să afle mai în amănunt despre viaţa acestuia. Scrisă în 1962, la mai puţin de trei ani de la trecerea la Domnul a Bătrânului, epistola are mult farmec şi profunzime, arătând frumuseţea şi măreţia isihiei, despre care, lucru demn deluat în seamă, Părint ele Iosif nu le vorbea numai monahilor,
ci şi mirenilor, subliniind că ea trebuie dobândită de toţi creştinii; isihast nu este numai cel care se izolează de lume şi petrece în tăcere desăvârşită, ci orice om care reuşeşte, cu ajutorul harului, o bună alcătuire a puterilor sale lăuntrice, duhovniceşti.

The thesis explores history and impact of the movement of Kollybades, which began in mid-18th century at Mount Athos and continued into19th century. Among the foci of the research are monastic and liturgical renaissances, phenomena of Philokalia and Greek modernism. The thesis scrutinises the influence of the movement on the modern Greek literature and Orthodox theology in other cultural contexts.

Данная работа представляет собой попытку исторического анализа самого замечательного духовного явления в Греческой церкви восемнадцатого века – так называемого «движения колливадов», которое состояло в возвращении ко во многом забытой к тому времени в результате турецкого господства святоотеческой традиции. Это возвращение было многоплановым – оно охватывало собой монашескую, приходскую, литургическую жизнь, а также богословие, апологетику и даже церковное пение и иконописание. В этом проявилась универсальность движения – так же как и в том, что оно продолжило существовать и в последующие эпохи, вплоть до наших дней. Оно стало причиной глубоких положительных изменений в жизни Греческой церкви и приносит свои плоды до сих пор.

Выпуск №№ 5 – 6 альманаха «Афонское наследие» приурочен к 295-летию со дня рождения прп. Паисия Величковского (1722 – 1794), оставившего неизгладимый след в духовности и культуре Украины, России, Молдовы, Румынии, Греции и других православных стран.
В очередной выпуск альманаха вошли материалы проведенных Международным институтом афонского наследия в Украине научных конференций и круглых столов.
В частности, в альманахе впервые в полном объеме опубликованы неизвестные ранее письма прп. Паисия Величковского, подтверждающие факт передачи ему и его «малороссийскому братству» «на вечные времена» древнего афонского монастыря Симонопетра. Также представлены сведения о создании киевскими князьями на Афоне в XI – XII вв. древнерусских монастырей «Ксилургу» и «Старый Русик» .
Всего в этот выпуск альманаха вошло 28 статей известных ученых и богословов из девяти стран мира (Украина, Великобритания, Италия,  Болгария, Россия, Молдова, Польша, Германия, США). В них исследователи на основе архивных документов рассматривают историю взаимоотношений Киевской Руси и стран Центрально-Восточной Европы с мировым центром православного монашества и мистицизма на Афоне. Количество страниц — 406, имеется большое количество иллюстраций.
Особое внимание в сборнике уделяется роли и значению Афона, его традиций и наследия в формировании самобытной отечественной духовности и культуры, а также зарождению древнерусского монашества на Святой Горе, его связям с Киевской Русью и славянским миром.
