Museography

In 1899 the great exhibition devoted to Alessandro Volta was meant to open a new season of richness for Como and the Lake. Nonetheless, in 1927 the second exhibition organized for the centennial anniversary of Volta's death was promoted by city's institutions and local businessmen as moment of improvement in the fields of economics, culture and tourism. Around the 1927 exhibition new buildings and facilities were built redesigning the historical downtown and its surroundings, such as the Sinigaglia Stadium built in the 1899 exhibition site, the Faro Voltiano on the Brunate hill, in the place of an ephemeral tower. The paper aims to reconstruct some events in Como's urban history in the first three decades of 19 th century, following both stylistic and architectural issues and connections with municipal identity and then fascist propaganda.

The great exhibition of Volta in 1899 and the exhibition of Ercole Ferrata and the Intelvesi masters held in Pellio in 1910 had the merit of focus the attention of scholars on a historical and artistic heritage still largely unexplored as warned Francesco Malaguzzi Valeri and Peter Toesca, engaged on the territory in cataloging campaigns and on the press in complaint action. After the end of World War I, in 1920, they were held exhibitions aimed to present to a wider audience the works of art admitted to wartime in warehouses set up in Rome and returned to their places of origin, under the guidance of Nello Tarchiani. This exhibition program had a dual purpose: on the one hand the public awareness towards heritage, on the other the celebration of victory, and the effectiveness of the protection measures implemented by the military command and the organs of the Ministry of Education. In this vein it is located, a few decades later, the publication of the Inventario degli oggetti d’arte della provincia di Sondrio, the ninth volume of a historic ministerial series, published in 1938. However, when that same year it was organized in Sondrio a big exhibition of painting and portrait from the XVth to the XIXth century, the intent were far from conservation and protection and turned to nationalistic propaganda. The article means to establish the mixed reception by scholars and the public, through the study of reviews and museographic programs, highlighting the connection with the activities of protection and cataloging in the territory and with the historical research.

Corporate Museum has experienced more than one hundred years of growth, and it has become a significant member of the museum-associated universe because of its unique character. Meanwhile, the commercialization and multiplicity of the public museum have blurred the discrepancies between them. Many corporate museums are currently popular cultural tourist sites and representations of regional identities. By depicting an image of a corporate museum’s identity, this book critically investigates the design features of this type of museum, deriving insights from an examination of both its public presentation and its corporate task. It aims to present a basic overview of the corporate museum, including its history, in order to better examine the subject in an appropriate context. With the help of multi-interface examination of selected cases, this book intends to flesh out that the corporate museum serves both a commercial nature and also the public interest.

Les visites scolaires au musée signifient la rencontre entre deux institutions de transmission culturelle majeures de notre société. Bien que l’école encourage et valorise les déplacements au musée, rien dans le programme scolaire n’oblige un enseignant à se rendre dans ces espaces patrimoniaux. Dès lors, le choix d’aller ou non au musée avec sa classe incombe généralement à l’enseignant. Quel sens donner à ces sorties hors les murs de l’école ? Comment les enseignants conçoivent-ils la complémentarité entre l’école et le musée ?

Au carrefour des sciences de l’éducation, de l’ethnologie et de la muséologie, cet ouvrage propose à la fois une réflexion théorique sur le rapport école-musée et une analyse du discours d’enseignantes à propos de leurs pratiques de visites au Musée d’ethnographie de Genève (MEG) et sur leurs représentations de l’institution. Quels objectifs les enseignantes associent-elles à une visite scolaire dans ce musée ? Inscrivent-elles la visite dans une démarche d’« apprentissage de la diversité culturelle » ? Au demeurant, que signifie et qu’implique « apprendre la diversité culturelle » ?

El proyecto Espacio Portus surge en julio de 2019 como un proyecto de educación en patrimonio para dar a conocer la historia y el patrimonio material e inmaterial del puerto y la ría de Avilés. Se trata de un proyecto innovador en lo que a espacios culturales se refiere, puesto que se abre a los nuevas interpretaciones y usos de los paisajes históricos portuarios desarrollando su puesta en valor desde las metodologías de la educación en patrimonio para todos los ciudadanos.

El autor de cada capítulo  describe el aspecto concreto en el que ha intervenido en el castillo abaluartado de Sanlúcar de Guadiana: La documentación histórica y la arqueológica, el proyecto y la ejecución arquitectónica de la restauración. En el concerniente a la interpretación, Espiral explica cómo, teniendo en cuenta los postulados de la pedagogía constructivista, los contenidos se ordenan de lo concreto a lo abstracto. Desde la praxis de Tilden se utiliza la provocación del pensamiento como forma de comunicar y cómo para adaptar el sistema de comunicación a la gestión de la visita disponemos los recursos interpretativos en tres círculos concéntricos a los que el público puede acceder progresivamente.

L'utilisation de plus en plus prégnante des nouvelles technologies dans les musées et bibliothèques (tablettes tactiles, audioguides, écrans interactifs, etc.) diviserait les publics entre ceux qui recherchent la compréhension et ceux pour qui prime l'émotion. Temporary Exhibition at the castle of Ioannina (Ic Kale) entitled: "From Apeiros Chora to the Great Continent; Epirotes following the migration wave to the USA (late 19th century - WWII)".
The exhibition -mainly photographic- also includes documents reproductions, original items dated back to that period, as well as video projections and original music. It was organized by both the University of Ioannina and the Ioaninna Ephorate of Antiquities.

A Music Instrument Museum does not exist in Mexico. A project, already more than 20 years ago already written, is still eager to be realized. This should be a museum which empaisizes "to explain musical instruments" in the museography itself, with scientifical information: acoustics, biology, chemistry, history, social sciences, musicology and many other sciences.  Modern musical instruments are now, the same as they were, in their basic structure, but broght to perfection in the course of many centuries and millennials.  This developement, must be showed. As any other museum, willingly or not, it comunicates messages in many ways, starting with what is exposed, how and why. In this museum, those inner messages are resumed in sentences like: I can make my own instruments and play them; I can understand science and apply it; music making makes me free; music is able to be practiced by all of us. This paper explains the reazons and ideas which brought us to this conception.

La presente investigación nace de una motivación personal surgida durante mi etapa de estudiante al recorrer el sitio arqueológico de Puruchuco, siendo valioso destacar la importancia histórica del museo, que en su momento fue pionero no sólo en el Perú, sino también en el resto de América, al exponer al público una unidad compuesta por una Huaca y un museo de sitio.

El estudio plantea como objetivo elaborar un diagnóstico integral, a través de un análisis del museo como institución cultural y científica, abordando diversos temas, a fin de conocer su problemática y el porqué de su situación actual, para luego plantear mejoras en las diversas áreas analizadas, proponiendo lineamientos orientados a mejorar su propuesta museográfica y que puedan ser aplicadas en otros pequeños museos similares.

Para lograr los objetivos propuestos, la investigación plantea un análisis y diagnóstico en base a una serie de componentes descriptivos que abordan distintos niveles de contexto. Bajo esta óptica se analizan diversos aspectos de la realidad del museo. En tal sentido el análisis y diagnóstico valora cualitativamente los componentes y variables que forman parte del estudio, planteándose interrogantes y proponiendo soluciones.

La investigación determina que el museo debe implementar una serie de mejoras y cambios integrales a fin de convertirlo en una sólida institución, que mediante una exitosa gestión garantice su desarrollo, permanecía en el tiempo y pueda afrontar un futuro que actualmente es incierto, pues carece de visión de conjunto a mediano plazo. Así mismo se elaboran una serie de propuestas y recomendaciones en todos los niveles, encaminadas a que el museo afronte con éxito y optimismo su futuro desarrollo.

This essay examines the conceptual development of Egyptian museums from the mid-nineteenth to the early twenty-first century. It is particularly concerned with the narrative themes and poetic structures through which colonial and postcolonial identities have been negotiated in modern Egypt. Over the past 150 years, Egyptian museum display has retained much of its traditional architecture based on Victorian aesthetics, but a new archaeological narrative has emerged in the past 50 years that redefines the colonial characterization of Egypt. Maximilian Prince of Wied’s Reise nach Brasilien (1820-1821) is one of the most important accounts of travels in Brazil in the early nineteenth century and a significant source of ethnographic information on the Botocudos and their neighbors. While both Wied’s writings and drawings relating to the latter subject matter have been widely discussed and appreciated, his ethnographic collection assembled on this occasion, now mostly preserved at the Linden-Museum in Stuttgart, surprisingly has never received the attention it deserves as the second earliest truly ethnographic collection of Brazilian ethnography (preceded only by the Rodrigues Ferreira collection in Portugal). This preview of a more detailed discussion describes its scope and contents, the history of its collection and preservation, and its potential for a better knowledge of the historical ethnography of eastern Brazil.

Il bookshop museale, fin dalle sue origini, è stato il luogo ideale per concretizzare in modo piacevole e di qualità l'esperienza della visita al museo, contribuendo alla definizione del gradimento degli utenti, alla promozione dell'immagine del museo e della conoscenza delle sue collezioni, oltre a garantire sostegno economico alle sue attività. Dopo un breve excursus sulla storia del bookshop, sviluppatasi di pari passo con quella del concetto di souvenir, è stato preso in esame il caso specifico dei bookshop dei Musei in Comune di Roma, gestiti da Zètema Progetto Cultura; una rete di musei e luoghi della cultura molto diversi tra loro, con tutte le problematiche che questo comporta a livello gestionale e commerciale. Dopo aver individuato una serie di indicatori di qualità per definire un bookshop veramente efficace e ben progettato, sono stati svolti dei sopralluoghi in tutti i musei del circuito per rilevare punti di forza e di debolezza di ciascuno di essi, e sono state compilate delle schede per evidenziare quali siano i margini di miglioramento del servizio. Tra le maggiori difficoltà rilevate, si nota soprattutto la mancanza di visibilità dei punti vendita e le effettive difficoltà, specialmente dal punto di vista logistico date le limitazioni nella gestione degli spazi in concessione, nell'allestimento di un punto venduta efficiente, invogliante all'acquisto ed esteticamente piacevole, che valorizzi il museo e i prodotti esposti. Tra le prospettive di miglioramento, oltre alla futura necessità di ripensare gli spazi fisici dedicati alla vendita, è stata individuata, in seguito alla presa in esame della situazione attuale del servizio vendita online dei prodotti dei Musei In Comune sul sito web dedicato www.museiincomuneroma.it, la necessità di una maggior presenza online dei bookshop e dei loro prodotti, sull'esempio di alcune grandi realtà museali nazionali e internazionali. Dall'analisi delle abitudini di acquisto dei consumatori negli ultimi anni, si è potuto verificare, infatti, come l'abitudine ad acquistare ma soprattutto ad informarsi online prima di un qualunque acquisto siano ormai un dato imprescindibile da prendere in considerazione per ogni attività commerciale che voglia essere sul mercato. Il bookshop museale non fa differenza rispetto alle altre tipologie di punto vendita, anzi può avere addirittura un maggior giovamento dalla presenza online a causa del particolare tipo di clientela che li frequenta (molto spesso non residenti e turisti). Purtroppo, si è registrato come, in Italia, la presenza di un vero servizio di vendita online sia una realtà solamente in pochissimi musei, per lo più gestiti da fondazioni private o organizzati in reti, per via degli alti costi di gestione di un servizio e-commerce in termini soprattutto di strutture e personale dedicato, raramente sostenibili da musei a gestione statale o, come nel caso preso in esame, comunale. È stata inoltre analizzata una tipologia alternativa di presenza online dei bookshop museali e dei loro prodotti, ovvero quella del catalogo online, liberamente consultabile e scaricabile e dal quale è possibile effettuare ordini e ricevere comodamente a casa i prodotti, sistema che presenta numerosi vantaggi dal punto di vista della facilità di gestione e dei minori oneri finanziari. In base a questo assunto, tramite una campagna fotografica di tutti i prodotti realizzati da Zètema Progetto Cultura per i Musei in Comune e di una selezione di altri prodotti disponibili per la vendita nei bookshop, è stato realizzato un listino prodotti che sarà disponibile sia in formato cartaceo, per essere utilizzato e distribuito in occasione di fiere e incontri con fornitori e professionisti del settore, sia in formato PDF, per essere caricato sul sito e permettere una visione d'insieme e dare la possibilità a tutti gli utenti di visionare in modo semplice e veloce l'assortimento dei bookshop dei Musei in Comune, con la possibilità di effettuare degli ordini sia per quanto riguarda i prodotti editoriali, sia (cosa finora mai realizzata) del merchandising.

ミュージアム研究の「展示の政治学（ミュージアムの政治学）」理論についての総覧。

科学や芸術を公に展示するミュージアムという施設にはさまざまな権力構造が絡まりあい、それらの結果として「文化」や「科学」や「芸術」は社会に形を取っている。いかにすればこうした力学を的確にとらえられるのか。こうした観点からミュージアムを研究してきた「展示の政治学（またはミュージアムの政治学）」理論について、日英言語圏を中心に論じた。関心を共有しながらもいくつかの研究領域（discipline）で分けて語られてきた研究群を結びつけるために、次の三つの潮流に体系立てて学説史を整理した。第一に、1980 年代半ばから始まる、ポストモダン文化人類学の流れを受けたポスト植民地主義論的ミュージアム研究。第二に、近代主義思想に関する制度論的研究。第三に、メディア論やカルチュラル・スタディーズの影響下に生まれた、コミュニケーション論的ミュージアム研究である。
本稿を通じて以下のことを明らかにした。第一、第二の議論では、「展示」とは意味を生成するメディアであり、そこには複数の意味が重なっていることが強調された。そして、この理解は研究・現場の双方で強く意識されるようになった。さらに第三の潮流に至り、来館者による展示解釈が、新たな調査対象として前景化する。このことで、対立・協調の過程から生じる展示がもつ意味の重層性について、来館者の観点からも理解すべきとする共通の課題が確認され始めることになった。すなわち、現在の展示の政治学は、受容理論を取り入れることで、論争的な課題を抱える歴史認識論・記憶論の議論を牽引するものになっていると結論づけた。

日本語圏と欧米言語圏の研究相互の関わり合い（や関わり合いのなさ）について日本語で整理することで、ミュージアムや展示について研究する基礎資料としての利用を想定している。

This paper is a historiographic review of the museum studies theory called “politics of display/politics of museum.” It explores the history of museum studies from the standpoint of museum politics: “museum” as a site for power politics and the social dynamics of the relevant actors associated with museums and exhibitions: curators, exhibition designers, educators, museum staff, museum committees, and visitors. This theory considers modern conceptions of “culture,” “science,” and “art”  as social constructs  emerging from these political processes. 

To shape this historiography derived from scholarly works mainly in English and Japanese, this paper narrates these discussions in three roughly chronological currents: 1) the trend of post-colonial museum studies and postmodern anthropology since the 1980s; 2) the tendencies of institutional analyses in the critique of modernism; 3) the tide of communication studies in museum fields, which was strongly influenced by cultural studies and media studies.

In the first and second trends, museums and displays became considered as political sites and complex assemblages that constitute a web of meaning. Throughout these trends, this understanding of how to interpret museums was common in both practical and theoretical fields. As the third stage goes, communication studies focused on the receptive aspect and museum theory focused on the visitor’s experience in the meaning-making process. As a result, it is nearly inevitable for museum scholars to discuss museum politics without mentioning receptions at museums. Through analyzing these three movements, this paper uncovers the historical path of increased significance on reception theory in recent museum politics.

l libro trae ispirazione da uno dei dibattiti più significativi degli ultimi anni, ovvero il ruolo della memoria in relazione al tema del Conflict Heritage. Le tracce dei conflitti bellici rappresentano un patrimonio difficile da gestire e a cui relazionarsi perchè legato a storie scomode, spesso traumatiche. Tuttavia riteniamo che esso rappresenti un tema centrale su cui riflettere, superando i contesti locali e lavorando alla costruzione di un’identità collettiva a scala europea. Il libro presenta una selezione critica di saggi raggruppati secondo tre tematiche principali, l’archeologia, l’arte e la museografia, offrendo diversi approcci e nuove prospettive sul tema del Conflict Heritage.

Con contributi tra gli altri di Sharon Macdonald, Ian Chambers, Marek Jasinsky, Luca Basso Peressut, Elisabetta Terragni.

This book takes inspiration from one of the most significant matter of debate of the recent years, that is to say the role of memory connected with Conflict Heritage. Linked as they are to unpleasant stories, they represent a patrimony that is difficult to manage. However, we believe they have the potential to resonate beyond their local contexts and work toward the construction of a collective identity on a European scale. This book presents a critical anthology of essays for the first time grouped in according to three main topics, archaeology, art and museography, and offers different approaches and new perspectives on the theme of Conflict Heritage.

With contributions, among others, by Sharon Macdonald, Ian Chambers, Marek Jasinsky, Luca Basso Peressut, Elisabetta Terragni.

Queste considerazioni e appunti introduttivi al tema della prevenzione dei rischi e della gestione della sicurezza nei musei è la rielaborazione di lezioni tenute in corsi di formazione per professionisti museali e in ambito universitario e di interventi a convegni e seminari in cui ho cercato di condensare sia gli insegnamenti tratti tanto dalla pratica quanto dalle letture che questa mi sollecitava a compiere per migliorarla. Scritta ormai molti anni fa ad uso di colleghi e allievi e circolata in forma dattiloscritta in forma di testo in progress, deve molto ai consigli e ai suggerimenti dei primi e alle domande e osservazioni dei secondi, da quando ho tenuto la prima lezione sulla sicurezza all’ISTUD di Pallanza nel 1998 nell’ambito di un corso coordinato da Giovanni Pinna, a quando, l’anno successivo ho partecipato con una relazione su questo tema al Convegno dell’ANMLI a Piacenza chiamato da Anna Maria Visser, a quando ho infine ripropostoquest’ultima nel Corso di museologia tenuto a Biella nell’ambitoDiploma universitario di Operatore dei Beni Culturali della Facoltà di Lettere dell’Università degli Studi di Torino a partire dall’anno accademico 2000-2001. Di fondamentale importanza è stata anche la partecipazione al Gruppo tecnico di lavoro per la definizione degli standard (D.M. 25.07.2000) che ha portato alla redazione dell’ Atto di indirizzo sui criteri tecnico-scientifici e sugli standard di funzionamento e sviluppo dei musei  (D.lgs. n.112/98 art. 150 comma 6) approvato con DM 10 maggio 2001, il cui V Ambito dedicato alla sicurezza si avvalse delle competenze del generale Roberto Conforti, Comandante del Comando Carabinieri Tutela Patrimonio Artistico e dell’ingegner Mauro Marchini del Servizio Tecnico per la Sicurezza del Patrimonio Culturale Nazionale del Ministero. Dal 2001 in poi il testo è stato più volte rimodulato, ampliato, integrato, anche in funzione del contesto e della funzione cui era destinato, senza tuttavia perdere il carattere di prontuario, di introduzione a un tema da approfondire sul piano teorico ricorrendo alla letteratura tecnica citata e da articolare sul piano pratico in procedure e regole scritte da redigere in base alla situazione in cui si opera. Sia i riferimenti normativi sia quelli bibliografici risalgono a qualche anno fa, avendo preferito  – nella situazione attuale – di privilegiare il rinvio alle risorse presenti in rete e dunque ai siti specializzati che offrono oggi una visione costantemente aggiornata dello stato dell’arte in materia di sicurezza.
Sono molte le molte persone che desidero ringraziare per il contributo dato alla redazione di questo testo, primi fra tutti i miei colleghi dei Musei civici torinesi, e in particolare Davide Battiston e Carla Caroppo con cui ho condiviso per molti anni la gestione quotidiana della sicurezza con le sue molte e svariate emergenze, nessuna delle quali fortunatamente così grave, i cui insegnamenti si ritrovano, pur senza essere citati, alla radice di molte delle considerazioni presenti in queste pagine

« Les mots ne sont pas innocents ; selon le contexte, ils peuvent jouer des rôles bien différents. Espace et Lieu, par exemple, peuvent parfois se comprendre comme des synonymes, même si l'un n'est que l'alter ego de l'autre, et vice versa. » Leur rapport avec les concepts d'œuvre et d'exposition s'est modifié au fur et à mesure des changements statutaires respectifs. Cet ouvrage vise ainsi à interroger le statut de l'espace d'exposition face aux propositions artistiques contemporaines. Il se développe autour des notions principales d'architecture muséale, d'œuvre et d'exposition, à partir des années 1960 et jusqu'à nos jours. Les études de cas (MAXXI, MAMCO, Fondation Trussardi, Nuit Blanche) illustrent, par la suite, la polyvalence de l'espace contemporain. L'espace, ainsi, décomposé, fragmenté, réorganisé, ouvert, façonnable, bidimensionnel, critique, virtuel, fluide, plié, emboité, nomade, a été étudié et restructuré à partir de ses paramètres fondamentaux ; cela permet d'insister sur la présence d'un processus évolutif en chaine (sorte de syllogisme) où, d'abord, l'œœuvre se fait exposition, ensuite, l'espace se fait œuvre et, enfin, l'espace se fait exposition. C'est pourquoi, derrière un espace façonnable qui évolue par rapport à l'art qu'il accueille, apparaît aussi un espace multifonctionnel, un « hyperespace », qui réclame un art spécifique et de nouvelles exigences expographiques.

The traces of war present in the urban foundation of cities as in landscapes, represent a patrimony which is difficult to manage and have a relationship with because they are linked to unpleasant memories, often traumatic ones. On one hand, people would like to eliminate all these traumatic presences and memories, while on the other hand, at the same time there is the fear of losing part of one’s history and identity which is made up of these scars (Carr 2010). There must be a third possibility, a “third space”, as H.K. Bhabha would call it, or rather a space in which to develop a different design process regarding the tangible and intangible patrimony generated by the conflicts that together can have a musealization and a therapeutic effect. The findings become not only liberation from the loss of the memory but are also used to bring to light other stories and rediscover other memories suffocated up until now. The interventions on the territory in fact have a conciliatory will in the sites and events and aim to realize the objective that the “New Museography” has: to act as the instrument of reconciliation and re-appropriation of places and people.
