Oi Christianoi - Sezione antica, n. 27 ----- Avendo spaziato in molti campi e trovandosi all'incrocio di tante strade sulle quali ha lasciato la sua originale impronta, Agostino d'Ippona (354-430) occupa un posto centrale e, per certi aspetti, unico nella storia del pensiero, della teologia e della spiritualità occidentale. Se le sue opere maggiori sono ben conosciute, tuttavia gran parte dei suoi scritti rimane nell'ombra, anche quando si tratta di scritti importanti per l'esegesi, la dottrina e la morale. Proponendo una sintesi dei contenuti di ciascuno di essi, questo Dizionario offre un quadro completo di tutta la vastissima produzione di Agostino, permettendo ad un vasto pubblico di lettori di avere a disposizione uno strumento utile di consultazione e di orientamento.

ARTIGO Resumen: Ignacio de Antioquía expresa su fe en la Resurrección de Cristo en cada una de sus car-tas que escribe camino a su martirio. Son pocas las veces que el Obispo explicita la resurrección de Cristo y éstas se comprenden en su contexto cristológico. Las referencias se agrupan en tres grandes temas: la resurrección como un acontecimiento personal, como parte del Misterio Pascual y como una acción personal de Cristo. En cada una de ellas se aprecia no solamente la profundidad teo-lógica del mártir sino también su profunda espiritualidad y la estrecha relación entre la muerte y resurrección y el significado profundo de su martirio. ALGUNOS ELEMENTOS DE CONTEXTUALIZACIÓN E l objetivo de la siguiente investigación es desvelar el significado que tenía el término resurrección en la cristología de San Ignacio de Antioquía y tratar de entender cuál es el uso que hace de este misterio en la totalidad de su pensa-miento teológico. Entendiendo el momento histórico de la aparición de Ignacio de Antioquía pode-mos entender también sus urgencias y sus necesidades pastorales. De todas maneras de él se sabe muy poco y hay discusiones todavía sobre la autenticidad de sus cartas. Se sabe además que la categoría Resurrección es solo una de las diversas posibi-lidades testimoniales del Nuevo Testamento. En efecto, se pueden constatar por lo menos tres tipos de lenguaje para referirse a este concepto que expresan a su vez distintos esquemas cristológicos 1 : resurrección, exaltación y vida; en este estudio nos interesa el primer concepto, que a su vez encierra los dos términos utilizados por Ignacio 2 .

I Tractatus in Psalmos furono scoperti e pubblicati da G. Morin tra la fine dell’Ottocento e gli inizi del Novecento. Sulla base di vari riscontri l’editore attribuì i nuovi testi a Girolamo, di cui fino a quel momento era pressoché sconosciuta la produzione omiletica, datandoli al primo decennio del V secolo, quando lo Stridonense si trovava a Betlemme. L’attribuzione fu accettata unanimemente, fino a quando nel 1980 V. Peri non propose di intendere i Tractatus come la traduzione geronimiana delle omelie di Origene. Tale tesi ebbe largo successo in Italia, ma incontrò l’opposizione di alcuni studiosi della scuola francese, che continuarono a sostenere la paternità geronimiana.
Qui si pubblicano il testo latino di Morin, rivisto dal curatore, e la traduzione italiana, corredata da un ampio commento che consente di inquadrare i Tractatus all’interno di una corretta prospettiva esegetica, ampia e articolata, che tenga conto della paternità geronimiana e dell’innegabile influenza origeniana.

La historia de la Salvación, tal y como Ireneo de Lyon la expone en sus obras, tiene su punto de arranque en la creación del hombre. En un movimiento continuo que alcanza su zenit en la Encarnación del Verbo, toda la obra divina está dirigida a la "salus hominis". Así toda la historia de la Salvación persigue al hombre, desde su aparición en el mundo, a través de ambos testamentos, hasta su madurez como hombre perfecto en Cristo. Frente a las desviaciones gnósticas de la época, esta "salus hominis" puede ser leída como "salus carnis" es por ello que en la teología de Ireneo este cuerpo que somos, o lo que se ha llamado posteriormente la "teología del cuerpo" adquiere una importancia trascendental.

O presente artigo trata de um importante assunto que, nos últimos anos, tem retomado seu lugar de destaque no meio evangélico: os puritanos, seu conceito e relevância para o cristianismo nos dias atuais. O artigo visa enfatizar algumas verdades e trazer a aplicabilidade dos conceitos bíblicos ensinados pelos puritanos diante das necessidades da igreja evangélica brasileira.

Este escrito trata de las diferencias de concepción entre dos grandes Padres de la Iglesia, San Casiano y San Agustín, a propósito de la gracia y la predestinación en el contexto de su lucha común contra la herejía de Pelagio. Señala que San Casiano no puede ser considerado "semi pelagiano" si no es por ignorancia de su obra o por mala fe. Y critica la concepción de Agustín sobre la predestinación  (el escrito original fue modificado  parcialmente en Agosto de 2021 pero el contenido principal del mismo y su objetivo no han cambiado). 

This paper deals with the differences of conception between two great Fathers of the Church, St. Cassian and St. Augustine, on the subject of grace and predestination in the context of their common struggle against the heresy of Pelagius. It points out that Saint Cassian was not a "semi-Pelagian", so that's epithet is used by ignorance or bad faith. Also it criticizes Augustine's conception of predestination (corrected August 2021).

Ofrezco aquí algunas páginas sencillas, profundas y llenas de actualidad de los Padres de la Iglesia, seleccionadas de entre sus abundantes y ricos escritos. El propósito del libro "Caminar con los Padres de la Iglesia" ha sido proveer a personas interesadas en profundizar su espiritualidad con lecturas selectas de los santos Padres, que nutran y alimenten su fe. Nos guía el deseo pastoral de divulgar lo más posible el maravilloso tesoro de sus escritos, sobre todo entre los laicos. La selección viene acompañada de notas biográficas, breves comentarios de textos, índice de autores y tabla de lecturas para tiempos litúrgicos, y se ordena según un itinerario de vida espiritual.

Understandably, modern exegetes are hesitant about adopting the ancient church’s hermeneutical practices. Rather than attempt to rationalize or resolve patristic exegesis, this paper will propose how modern hermeneutics can incorporate the interpretive practices of the patristic era. Ultimately, a genuinely “Christian” interpretation of Scripture will conform to the “Christotelic” trajectories of interpretation exemplified by Christ, the apostles, and the patristic fathers, while recognizing that advances in biblical criticism can supplement patristic methodologies. Assumed here is the belief that a “Christian” hermeneutic necessarily patterns itself (at the very least) after Christ and the apostles (if not also church tradition). Any other exegesis that does not follow the example of Christ or the apostles, such as modern historical-grammatical hermeneutics, is essentially foreign to traditional Christianity.

Analisi del libro II del trattato agostiniano e delle complesse tematiche ivi contenute, con attenzione alle nozioni di semiologia, esegesi, filologia, allo scopo di valorizzare lo spessore culturale dell'operazione "enciclopedica" di Agostino, fra cultura antica e interpretazione scritturistica.

En este trabajo de clase estudio la primera mención de la palabra “trinidad” en la literatura cristiana, así como ver si la temprana concepción de Dios y de esa “trinidad” que éste padre apologista de la segunda mitad del siglo II d.C. presenta en sus tres libros “A Autólico”, es o no es acorde con la posterior formulación Niceno Constantinopolitana que constituye una versión oficial y ortodoxa de la doctrina de la Trinidad tal cual la entienden la inmensa mayoría de los cristianos hasta hoy.

More than 20 years after presenting his first interpretation of the mosaic from the House of Aion in a paper entitled “Uwagi na temat mozaiki z Domu Aiona w Nea Paphos (Cypr)” (Meander 9/10, 1987, p. 421-438, in Polish, and translated to English: « The Immortality of the Human Soul and the Dionysiac Mysteries in the 4th Century Allegory [in Connection with the Interpretation of the Mosaic from the “House of Aion” at Paphos in Cyprus]»), where he proposed reading the five mythological panels (1. Leda and Zeus; 2. Dionysus on Mount Nysa; 3. The Dionysian thiasos; 4. Apollo and Marsyas; 5. The Apotheosis of Cassiopeia) as an allegory of the destiny of the human soul and body, starting with conception and ending with the liberation of the soul and its apotheosis, the author now enhances his initial interpretation with numerous reflections concerning the historical context of this work of art, created in the years 320-360.
If, according to the author, the mosaic is a “Hymn” in honour of the pagan gods, Man (his soul) and his place in the (pagan) universe, then at the same time it polemicises with the Christian faith and its God, Jesus Christ.
The author puts forward numerous new solutions relating to the mosaic’s iconography and iconology. Analysis of the mosaic also leads him to propose a solution to the as-yet unanswered question regarding the absence of images of the crucified Christ in Christian art of the 3rd and 4th centuries, up until 420/430, when the first images of Christ on the cross appear.

This inquiry exhausts the Mariological description of St. Gregory Nazianzen, who designates Mary as “prokathartheisa (prepurified).” Gregory likely attempted to solve the riddle of the Purification of Jesus and Mary in the Temple.

Nazianzen's theology is traced to the Palamite Mariological movement. Surprisingly, the Palamite Mariologists gradually applied the term "prepurified" to each image of Mary as she was celebrated in the liturgical calendar. Each celebration from Conception until her First Witness of the Resurrection and Pentecost was a moment of "grace and glory" or prepurification.

I track this title from the 6th Ecumenical Council, Liturgy (e.g. Synodikon of Orthodoxy), and Fathers (e.g., St. Sophronius and St. John Damascene).

Next, Palamas' theological notions of  Marian (pre)purification are uncovered as the solid basis of Mary's privileged status in Palamite theology (e.g., Theophanes, Bryennius, Cabasilas, Mark of Ephesus). Palamism's patristic exegesis manifests an uninterrupted and consistent theological tradition and a steady metaphysical foundation for Mary's absolutely immaculate existence in every single patristic and Palamite author known to use the term. This is due to Mary's ineffable place in divine thought. After providing indications of Nicholas Cabasilas' arguments against Thomistic rejection of the Byzantine doctrine of the prokathartheisa, Byzantine Mariology culminates in the “Pillar of Orthodoxy,” (St.) Mark Eugenicus (1392-1444/5), the last great representative of this unique Byzantine Mariology before the fall of Constantinople.

Mark´s theological constitutes the climactic synthesis of Mary's privileges as προκαθαρθεῖσα (praepurgata) in his apologetic treatise: On the Distinction between Essence and Energy: First Antirrhetic against Manuel Kalekas (c. 1437).

Mark was the unique Father of the Council of Ferrara-Florence (1438-1439) in a position to meet alleged patristic objections to the Immaculate Conception of Latin “maculist” theologians prior to Mark’s arrival in Italy. These Latin debates spilled over into the Byzantine camp during the Council. Byzantines were generally aloof to physico-theological theories of Mary's conception, yet agreed on her unique predestination from the first moment of her divine-mental and natural existence, stemming from her  exalted place among the contingent thoughts within of divine mind. Relying on Palamas, Palamites explicitly linked "prepurification" with the Byzantine liturgical calendar with respect to feasts of the Theotokos, prior to the Incarnation.

Conversely, Latin Scholastics universally erred in their 12-15th century interpretation of Damascene’s designation of Mary as “(pre)purified” at the Annunciation and their "low" Mariologies followed due course. Palamites universally reverenced the prepurified, ergo absolutely immaculate Mary.

I conclude by synthesizing the web of complementarity amid the “prepurified” Virgin, the Ephesine’s Mariology, Franciscan Mariological 14th-15th century parallels, and avenues of development for immaculist theologians who adopt the metaphysical implications of the Theotokos. Scotistic and Palamite metaphysics too verge at a common point of departure with respect to St. Maximus Confessor (in divine psychology and the theology of the Incarnation) to explain the Marian parallel."

*** [ITALIANO] Con questo libro Giona Tuccini indaga in modo autorevole e familiare le ragioni della fortuna “dimenticata” di due storici capifila della letteratura italiana moderna (Giovanni Boine e Giovanni Papini) in aperto dialogo con i Padri della Chiesa e la tradizione mistica del Rinascimento. Oggetto di questo studio sono le penetranti considerazioni critiche d’autore su Juan de la Cruz, Anselmo d’Aosta, Agostino che per Boine e Papini – operatori di un drammatico svecchiamento della cultura primonovecentesca attraverso la chiamata ai fatti dello spirito – non furono solamente tre singolari vie a Dio, ma espressione di una incessante ricerca formale che, obbedendo ad un suo piano interiore, si rinnovava ogni volta come esercizio del vivere e del credere.

*** [ENGLISH] This book explores two historic leaders of Italian literature, Giovanni Boine and Giovanni Papini, in an open dialogue with the Church Fathers and the mystical tradition of the Renaissance. The objects of this study are the penetrating critical considerations of the authors relating to Juan de la Cruz, Anselmo d’Aosta, and St Augustine, who for Boine and Papini were not merely the three single ways to God, but also an expression of a ceaseless formal research that, following an internal plan, renewed itself every time as an exercise in living and believing.

Résumé :Cette analyse du thème de la filiation dans le Dialogue, puis dans l’Apologie, montre que ce thème y occupe une place différente et que ses manifestations y prennent des formes distinctes qui correspondent aux finalités et aux destinataires propres de ces deux écrits : païens pour l’Apologie, juifs et « judéo-chrétiens » pour le Dialogue. Dans l’Apologie, il est relégué au second plan, confiné à des passages bien délimités et toujours présenté de manière succincte sans que soient envisagées ses implications exégétiques et théologiques ; dans le Dialogue, il contribue à l’organisation, à l’orientation et à la signification du texte. Son étude confirme certaines spécificités déjà observées par ailleurs dans la pensée de Justin et dans ce qui distingue les deux textes.

La fe cristiana es la fe en un ser divino y humano a la vez: Jesucristo. Esa doble naturaleza divino-humana de Cristo es un misterio que supera las posibilidades del entendimiento humano. Aún así, sin pretender explicar el misterio, el dogma de la doble naturaleza de Jesús, junto a la noción de communicatio idiomatum, constituyen el resultado de los esfuerzos de la teología por dar una expresión inteligible al mismo. En este artículo se repasa el camino que llevó a proclamar el dogma de la doble naturaleza, y luego se comenta la idea de communicatio idiomatum.

The Christian faith is faith in the only one divine and human being at the same time: Jesus Christ. This double divine-human nature of Christ is a mystery that surpasses the possibilities of human understanding. Still, without pretending to explain the mystery, the dogma of the dual nature of Jesus, together with the notion of communicatio idiomatum, are the result of the theology's efforts to give an intelligible expression to it. This article reviews the path that led to proclaiming the dogma of the dual nature, and then discusses the idea of communicatio idiomatum.

A importância da obra patrística é relevante tanto para cristãos protestantes como para católicos apostólicos romanos, e seus escritos e estudos interconfessional, torna o livro História Eclesiástica relevante para a sua utilização por leigos, estudantes e teólogos cristãos, independentemente de sua orientação confessional.

Una de las razones fundamentales por las cuales la muerte causa dolor se debe a una comprensión equívoca acerca del sentido último de la vida humana. Además, la Modernidad se desliga, en ocasiones, de la dimensión emotiva y afectiva del ser humano. Así pues, toda terapéutica del duelo mortuorio exige reflexionar con seriedad acerca del sentido de la muerte, tarea en la cual la tradición filosófica y teológica occidental es un apoyo ineludible. En la primera parte se ha de revisar, desde la perspectiva filosófica de Epicuro, la concepción de la muerte según la cual la opinión ordinaria es errada y no da cabida a una vida realizada como fundamento de la tranquilidad y la salud. En la segunda parte se esbozarán los rasgos y las notas esenciales de una concepción cristiana de la muerte a partir de la obra de San Agustín de Hipona, exponiendo algunas medidas concretas de preparación para la muerte con base en su pensamiento.

Abstract: In this article, we have confronted the question of Augustinian preaching as a theological locus and a crucible of expression and transmission of a certain spirituality that he draws from its source, which is Christ, the only Master who teaches both the preacher and the faithful. Our study allowed us to show the source of inspiration of the preacher of Hippo, which is precisely the study and meditation of the Holy Scriptures. We also highlighted the humility, the love and the ardent desire to be useful to the salvation of the faithful for which he was responsible. And this characterizes the ministry of Saint Augustine. His prayer, his confessions, and his kindness in preaching, are elements that could always inspire preachers of all times.

Letters inserted into Eusebius’ Ecclesiastical History can be interpreted fruitfully within the context of the usage of embedded letters in imperial Greek literature. Elite Greek narrative texts regularly attributed letters to famous Greeks of the past in order to model elite convention and to reveal heroic character. Similarly, Eusebius’ subtle and manipulative reproduction of letters by past Christians foregrounds these Christians as exemplars of proper ecclesiastical conduct. Eusebius’ letters represent wide communication, harmonious resolution of dif erences, and conformity to past Christians’ conduct as essential to Christian identity, particularly in his narratives of the paschal and rebaptism controversies. Eusebius presented epistolary conventions so as to render Christian character acceptable to elite Greek-speaking audiences.
