The phenomena of machine failures, defects, multiple rework loops, etc., results in much difficulty in modeling rework systems, and therefore the performance analysis of such systems has been investigated limitedly in the past. We propose an analytical method for the performance evaluation of rework systems with unreliable machines and finite buffers. To characterize the rework flow in the system, a new 3M1B (three-machine and one-buffer) Markov model is first presented. Unlike previous models, it is capable of representing multiple rework loops, and the rework fraction of each loop is calculated based on the quality of material flow in the system. A decomposition method is then developed for multistage rework systems using the proposed 3M1B model as one of the building blocks. The experimental results demonstrate that the decomposition method provides accurate estimates of performance measures such as throughput and Work-In-Process (WIP). We have applied this method to several problems, such as the determination of the optimal inspection location and the identification of bottleneck machines in rework systems.► We propose an analytical model for manufacturing systems with multiple rework loops. ► We solve problems such as inspection allocation and bottleneck identification. ► Bottlenecks of rework systems migrate differently compared to systems without rework. ► We propose a continuous improvement strategy in the paper.

The aim of this work was the evaluation of conductivity assessments for the monitoring and controlling the release study process of chlorhexidine and lidocaine hydrochloride from the ionic polyacrylic gel, applying different temperatures. According to performed measurements of release, the chlorhexidine, characterized by very low water solubility, is observed in the acceptor compartment in the amount of 2.0-3.0% and its level depends of the temperature. The amount of well soluble lidocaine hydrochloride released in parallel conditions was between 60 and 70%. Beyond, the assessments confirm the presence of a specific bond between the chlorhexidine imine groups and polyacrylic acid carboxylic groups. Presented method may be applied in the prediction of release rates, before actual release analysis, and may assure better evaluation of the systems.

Operating system's performance and throughput are highly affected by CPU scheduling. The scheduling is considered as an NP problem. An efficient scheduling improves system performance. This paper presents and evaluates a method for process scheduling. In this paper, we will discuss the use of genetic algorithms to provide efficient process scheduling. We will evaluate the performance and efficiency of the proposed algorithm in comparison with other deterministic algorithms by simulation. The results shows that proposed GA-based algorithm gives better performance measure. This paper attempts to present evaluation of proposed GA based scheduling against existing traditional algorithms.

An implemented system for on-line analysis of multiple distributed data streams is presented. The system is conceptually universal since it does not rely on any particular platform feature and uses format adaptors to translate data streams into its own standard format. The system is as powerful as possible (from a theoretical standpoint) but still efficient enough for on-line analysis thanks to its novel rule-based language (RUSSEL) which is specifically designed for efficient processing of sequential unstructured data streams. The generic concepts are applied to security audit trail analysis. The resulting system provides powerful network security monitoring and sophisticated tools for intrusion/anomaly detection. The paper presents an attempt to evaluate the effectiveness of the implementation of a needs-based approach to ESP course design in the context of Greek tertiary education and to measure the impact of the influence of pre-existing English knowledge in relation to the students' performance in ESP. Experimental research design was employed; the students' scores in the Oxford Placement Test and the pre-and post-tests were analyzed by means of ANOVA and ANCOVA. The post-intervention data revealed that the experimental group outperformed the control group in terms of total test scores even after adjustments were made by removing the learners' previous linguistic competence as measured by the OPT while between-groups comparison indicated statistically significant differences. The results thus, provide support for the efficacy of the adopted needs-based approach to syllabus design.

Supplementary Cluster Activities constitute an important organisational part within the structure of the German Cluster of Excellence “Tailor-Made Fuels from Biomass” at RWTH Aachen University, because they focus on the entire clusters efficient networking process and successful strategic cluster development. As research teams from different scientific fields collaborate, the strategic management of interdisciplinary processes becomes necessary to enhance scientific cooperation. Therefore, amongst other measures of cluster development, a Balanced-Scorecard-Approach is implemented to measure the performance of the entire Cluster of Excellence. With the annual implementation of the Balanced-Scorecard-Approach, crucial key performance indicators have been collected, compared and analysed for the strategic management of the Cluster of Excellence, to facilitate innovation activities through adequate measures.
