Poststructuralist Feminist Theory

Enclosed is the syllabus and course notes from the upper division course I teach in PostModernism and Post-Marxist Critical Theory. It occurs to me that some of these essays--ranging from Horkheimer and Adorno, Baudrillard, Foucault, and the feminist post-modern theorist Donna Haraway may offer some insight and some tools for comprehending the dark times in which we live. While these essays may not be directly aimed at understanding the rise of phenomena like the Alt-Right, toxic masculinity, and particularly violent forms of patriarchy, I think they can show us something about the ideological trends that set us on out current morally troubling path.

ABSTRACT
This research, situated at the junction of feminist, trans and disability studies, examines the limits of intersectional feminist analyses and the difficulties faced in their consideration of gender identity and ability through an analysis of two types of body modification: transsexuality and transability (voluntary disability acquisition). In response to the question “what are the limits of intersectional analyses and how can they be addressed?”, three objectives are proposed: 1) participate in the critical examination of specific limits of intersectional feminist analyses in order to diversify their axes through the consideration of gender identity and ability; 2) question the conceptual assumptions and cisgenderist and (cis)ableist privileges informing negative discourses around these body modifications and highlight points of convergence among feminist, transactivist and anti-ableist movements in order to encourage dialogue and solidarities among them; 3) provide feminist, trans and disability studies with an enriched model of intersectionality capable of addressing new claims for justice from oppressed groups, such as those of transsexual and transabled individuals. The negative discourses of certain feminists and other scientists regarding these body modifications are mapped and critiqued through a methodology combining archeological, genealogical and critical discourse analysis. The reflections presented here, inspired by poststructuralist and queer approaches, explore neither the “origins” of transsexuality and transability nor their motivations; this is a study of the negative discourses about these phenomena and the normative systems from which they originate. The result is an important contribution to theoretical, normative and political fields of knowledge: the examination of two “extreme” cases of body modification reveals the bodily normativities of dominant regimes, specifically cisgenderism and (cis)ableism, that remain as unrecognized in our societies as in our social movements.

Cette recherche se situe à la jonction des études féministes, trans et sur la production du handicap. Elle s’intéresse aux limites des analyses féministes intersectionnelles et leurs difficultés à considérer certains axes identitaires, telles l’identité de genre et les capacités, à travers l’analyse de deux cas de figure de modifications corporelles, soit la transsexualité et la transcapacité (transformation visant à acquérir un handicap). Cette thèse s’articule autour de la question suivante : quels sont les angles morts des analyses intersectionnelles et comment pouvons-nous y remédier? Pour répondre à cette question, cette thèse propose trois objectifs : 1) Participer aux questionnements critiques entourant certaines limites des analyses féministes intersectionnelles pour en diversifier les axes à partir de l’identité de genre et des capacités; 2) Remettre en question les présupposés conceptuels et les privilèges cisgenristes et (cis)capacitistes qui sous-tendent les discours négatifs entourant ces modifications corporelles et mettre en valeur les points de convergence entre les mouvements féministes, transactivistes et anticapacitistes pour instaurer des dialogues et des solidarités entre eux; 3) Fournir un modèle enrichi de l’intersectionnalité pouvant être déployé en études féministes, trans et sur la production du (trans)handicap, apte à répondre aux nouvelles revendications de justice de groupes opprimés, comme celles des personnes transsexuelles et transcapacitaires. À l’aide d’une méthodologie alliant l’analyse critique de discours, l’analyse archéologique et généalogique, les discours négatifs de certaines féministes et d’autres scientifiques sur ces transformations corporelles sont cartographiés et critiqués. Les réflexions présentées ici, s’inscrivant dans une approche poststructuraliste et queer, ne proposent pas une recherche des « origines » et des motivations de la transsexualité et de la transcapacité, mais plutôt une étude des discours négatifs vis-à-vis ces phénomènes et des systèmes normatifs qui sous-tendent ces discours. C’est sous cet angle que cette recherche constitue un apport important aux champs des savoirs, tant sur le plan théorique, normatif que politique : en se penchant sur deux cas de figure « extrêmes », elle met en lumière les normativités corporelles des régimes dominants, notamment cisgenriste et (cis)capacitiste, occultées tant dans nos sociétés que dans nos mouvements sociaux.

First published in 1988, this volume redefined the anthropological study of menstrual customs. Examining cultures as diverse as long-house dwellers in North Borneo, African farmers, Welsh housewives, and postindustrial American workers, it challenged the previously widespread image of a universal "menstrual taboo" as well as the common assumption of universal female subordination that underlay it. Offering feminist perspectives on comparative gender politics and symbolism, the book has interested students and scholars in anthropology, women's studies, religion, and comparative health systems. Originally listed as a “Notable” book in Choice, it later won the first Most Enduring Edited Collection Prize, awarded by the Council for the Anthropology of Reproduction (a unit of the American Anthropological Association.). The book continues to be taught regularly around the world.

Historically, there has been reluctance, from mainstream IR scholars as well as feminists, to seriously engage with women’s agency in warfare. Instead, scholarship has tended to focus on women’s activism for peace or to ignore women’s agency altogether.
This book rectifies this omission by exploring the cultural understanding of actors, agents and structures of war and how we can make sense of attitudes towards women, agency and war today. By using a poststructuralist feminist perspective and by analysing empirical cases from a Western ‘war on terror’ cultural context, Åhäll argues that all types of stories are informed by ideas about motherhood and maternal reproduction as the foundation of sexual difference. This does not only mean that women are judged/read/valued based on the shape of their, maternalised, bodies, rather than what they actually do, but, it means that ideas about motherhood, not motherhood itself, function to police contemporary gender norms and contemporary understandings of agency in war. Overall, this book argues that maternalist war stories function to reiterate traditional heteronormative gender roles. This is how a ‘body politics’ of war is not only policing gender norms but actually writing ‘sex’ itself. The body politics of war told through maternalist war stories is a process in which the sexing of war means the policing of gender borders, with motherhood acting as the border agent.
This work will be of interest to students and scholars in areas such as gender, political violence and international relations.

In the new planetary age of the Anthropocene or the Age of Man (as it were), humanity is cast as a single geological force, a major force of environmental destruction, and one folding in on itself. The Anthropocene is famously defined by human-induced climatic, biological, and geological transformations of our planet, by a profound anthropogenic environmental impact and mass species extinctions. However, the Anthropocene risk also, as pointed out by a wide range of feminist philosophers and critical scholars, hides troublesome differences between humans, and also hides intimate relationships between technology, humans, and other animals. This totalization of humanity is a parallel risk in some posthuman theorizing also, and something postdisciplinary scholars of the critical humanities and feminist philosophers have paid attention to for decades. In the posthuman context of the Anthropocene, I suggest and point to postdisciplinary humanities research and theory-practices that pay careful attention to the feminist theoretical work on our equally postnatural condition as an experimental remedy.

In 2009 a US based television programme, The View, discussed the arrest of film director Roman Polanski. Polanski was wanted for six outstanding charges related to the rape of Samantha Gailey in 1977. During this episode of the The View, Whoopi Goldberg made a controversial statement that Polanksi was not guilty of 'rape-rape'. This statement along with the long history of Polanski's avoidance of incarceration, illustrates the ongoing challenges for feminists to confront the trivialization of sexual coercion and violence. Goldberg's comments initiated an enthusiastic response on online forums and reinvigorated debates around definitions of rape. In this paper, I analyse online discussions on a feminist blog using discourse analysis (Parker, 2014) and the importance of considering the interrelated concepts of consent/non-consent, pleasure/distress and power in understanding the complexity and diversity of experiences of sexual violence.

This article aims to claim ‘body size’ as an increasingly important axis of signification. In the article I draw on research from various disciplines to present an exploratory overview of the different ways in which body size categorizations – being (considered) fat or slender – intersect with other axis, such as gender, race, sexuality, social class and age. I argue that an intersectional perspective on body size adds to our understanding of the layeredness and complexity of power differentials, normativities and identity formations that co-produce inequalities. Furthermore I attempt to show how processes of exclusion and marginalization based on body size categorizations are similar to racist, ableist and misogynist logics and practices. Hereby, I intend to demonstrate the vast (negative) impact of body size categorizations, specifically but not exclusively on the lives of those who occupy the marked position in relation to this axis: the ‘fat’. I argue that an intersectional perspective helps us to see body size discrimination more clearly and can help disrupt dominant discourses about the body in order to create a truly ‘healthy’ environment in which bodies of all sizes, shapes, colors, and abilities can be celebrated

This book offers a much-needed new political theory of an old phenomenon. The last decade alone has marked the highest number of migrations in recorded history. Constrained by environmental, economic, and political instability, scores of people are on the move. But other sorts of changes—from global tourism to undocumented labor—have led to the fact that to some extent, we are all becoming migrants. The migrant has become the political figure of our time.

Rather than viewing migration as the exception to the rule of political fixity and citizenship, Thomas Nail reinterprets the history of political power from the perspective of the movement that defines the migrant in the first place. Applying his "kinopolitics" to several major historical conditions (territorial, political, juridical, and economic) and figures of migration (the nomad, the barbarian, the vagabond, and the proletariat), he provides fresh tools for the analysis of contemporary migration.

The present research will be a discussion of the ‘body’ in a setting of modernity, and how ‘belly-dance’ can be used as a tool for agency and ‘boundary-making’, following my time spent dancing and conducting fieldwork within the ‘community’ of ‘belly-dance body mind’ in Camden Town (London). I will be contributing to the ongoing feminist debate surrounding the concept of a ‘woman’. Drawing from linguistic anthropology, critical theory and post-structural feminism, I will display how ‘belly-dance’ has become a tool for women living in post-modern settings to make a political stand against categorization and essentialist ideals. There will also be a discussion throughout of consumerism, gentrification and neo-colonialism in relation to gender and cultural producers.

Breathing is not a common subject in feminist studies. Breathing Matters introduces this phenomenon as a forceful potentiality for feminist intersectional theories, politics, and social and environmental justice.

By analyzing the material and discursive as well as the natural and cultural enactments of breath in black lung disease, phone sex work, and anxieties and panic attacks, Breathing Matters proposes a nonuniversalizing and politicized understanding of embodiment. In this approach, human bodies are conceptualized as agential actors of intersectional politics. Magdalena Górska argues that struggles for breath and for breathable lives are matters of differential forms of political practices in which vulnerable and quotidian corpomaterial and corpo-affective actions are constitutive of politics.

Set in the context of feminist poststructuralist and new materialist and postconstructionist debates, Breathing Matters offers a discussion of human embodiment and agency reconfigured in a posthumanist manner. Its interdisciplinary analytical practice demonstrates that breathing is a phenomenon that is important to study from scientific, medical, political, environmental and social perspectives.

Bringing together feminist theory, girlhood studies, and curriculum theory, this book contributes an in-depth critical analysis of curriculum in single-gender schooling for girls in postfeminist landscapes of "unlimited choices" and resurgences of proper girlhood. The arguments challenge the mainstream assumptions and promotions about the guarantees of female success via small school supports, tailored curricula, protection, school choice and class advantage.

Single-gender schools are not homogenous; they have different histories, student populations, finances and organization. Recognizing this diversity, Girls, Single-sex Schools, and Postfeminist Fantasies draws on rich data collected in two US secondary schools over a two-year period to identify and explore the ambiguities of success in single-sex schools for girls. Rich classroom observations and interviews with teachers and students reveal the resounding message delivered to girls - that they can "have it all" by going to college. By exploring students’ imaginings, hopes, and doubts around college, the text illustrates how this catalyzes girls’ critiques of their futures and of the schooled storylines of female success. While teachers might trumpet college, career, and limitless horizons, girls seek to understand their social positions and try to make sense of family, passions, and future happiness.

What is the relationship between Foucault’s concept of biopower and Deleuze’s concept of control? Despite the similarities between these two concepts, there is not a single scholarly article that solely thematizes this question, nor a comparative survey of the answers given so far. This essay aims to fill this lacuna. Drawing on Deleuze's unpublished and untranslated lectures on Foucault, the original thesis of this essay is thus that biopower and control are the same concept of power in both content and form.

This essay concerns black feminist theory’s experimentation with the disciplinary discourses of chaos theory and physics to investigate the trace effects of blackness and explore the limits of conceptualization and representation in light of the particular problem that blackness’s diffuse and immeasurable conditioning power poses to thought and representation. I argue that when considering the genealogy of black feminism, it is possible to discern a black feminist poetics that anticipates recent feminist materialism’s attentiveness to the mutually-constitutive effects of discursivity and materiality. Said poetics approaches a shared worry over the problem of referentiality, not in representationalist terms, as recent materialists would suggest, but rather through a poetics attentive to the racially sexuating bases of an (anti)black sublime that conditions, exceeds, and potentially ruptures the scales of the empirical.  Privileging performativity, gesture, resonance, and metaphor over the authority and purported veridicality of Western empirical science, the poetics of black feminism investigated here is instructive for a general theory of representation.

This article argues that the use of sexual infiltration by police and criminal collaborators represents a strategic deployment of surveillance technology by the state with the aim of creating Foucault’s “docile bodies” through the development of totalising omnipresence. The insertion of police into the private sphere of activists’ sexual relationships – a site presumed to be outside of state gaze – serves to not only disrupt the target communities but also to reverberate throughout social networks and create inactivity. By exposing informants from within one’s own “family”, the state is able to collect intelligence, spread insecurity and display totalising disciplinary power to the social movement under observation.

This article employs participant definitional analysis, sensitized with feminist poststructuralism and critical ethnography, to understand three identity construction processes that members of childfree LiveJournal communities participate in: (a) naming childfreedom, (b) negotiating childfreedom, and (c) enacting childfreedom. I argue that childfree identities are contested and sometimes activist. Ultimately, I call for scholars to reconsider the definition of childfree to account for the complex and nuanced identities constructed by individuals who identify as such.

This paper applies a feminist post-structural discourse analysis to an excerpt from the DVD release Girls Gone Wild: Finally 18, vol 3 (2007) in order to investigate themes of language and gender, making salient themes of power, normativity, performativity, objectification, infantilization, humor, laughter, and self-disclosure. The study finds that both interlocutors in the scene - interviewer and interviewee - employ gendered language performances for different purposes in accordance with relevant discourses. Notably, the interviewer uses language strategies that masks his superior power.

This study aims to analyze the representation and construction of the woman subject in the novels Pepita Jiménez of Juan Valera and Memorias de un solterón of Emilia Pardo Bazán, in the light of feminist literary criticism, mostly based on poststructuralist feminist literary criticism. The analysis focuses on the main female characters in both novels; Pepita in the first novel and Feíta in the second novel. The objective of this investigation is to find out thematically and formally, through these characters, to what extent the language used in these texts corresponds to and/or differs from constructs of woman and gender discourse which were dominant in the time when the texts were written. The texts to be analyzed in this study are associated with the political, cultural and literary background of Spain in the second half of the 19th century. The study intends to find out formal aspects of the texts which will enable us to take on a critical approach towards patriarchal points of view of the time and woman's role within the system. Techniques of deconstruction and psychoanalysis will allow us to trace the construction of woman in the texts.

(*updated version) This chapter focuses on the development of critical literacy scholarship and practices in Hong Kong over the past 30 years, against the backdrop of increasing influence and control by the People's Republic of China. The chapter begins with an overview of relevant social, political, and economic developments in the Hong Kong city-state's history, and intersections of those developments with its schooling system and academia. Key issues of educational equity and social justice are highlighted, followed by a breakdown of significant works in critical literacy research literature, methodologies, and pedagogies at the primary, secondary, and university level. This chapter also tackles elements of the ongoing protest movement and possibilities for more transformative research and praxis, including through application of intersectional and transnational approaches.

Simandan D (2005) "Pragmatic Scepticism and the Possibilities of Knowledge" Timisoara, Editura Universitatii de Vest/West University Press, 256 pp.

This book distiled my own way of understanding the relation between epistemology, ontology, and politics, and the best name I found for labelling that way is pragmatic scepticism. Throughout the book, I stay away from the temptation to give a dictionary-like definition of this philosophy. I do not even like to think of it as a philosophy. Instead, I see pragmatic scepticism as a way of being and as a way of relating. A way of being human, i.e. enmeshed in language and limited by our senses; and a way of relating, i.e. crafted by the happy and sad encounters with theories, things, and lifeís happenings. The book is structured in three parts, which together give a sense of the potentials of pragmatic scepticism: as a way of thinking about the world, as a way of approaching theoretical dilemmas, as a way of mapping one's inner contradictions. The first part of the book introduces pragmatic scepticism in relation to the general questions underwriting the philosophy of knowledge and the study of science. The second part is more specific in that it deploys the pragmatic sceptical attitude to the central metatheoretical questions of the discipline of geography. The last part of the book groups under the heading "philosophies of struggle" two more applied essays on the political economy and the political epistemology of conflicts over knowledge in the globalised landscape of higher education in general and geography in particular.

What do we think when we think the ‘now’? Our paradigmatic prescription is a proliferation of “post-’s”: post-modern, post-colonial, and even - enigmatically - post-human. Accolades abound for the decentering of theoretical and philosophical presuppositions that allegedly characterizes our thinking the ‘now’.
Inevitably, a ‘now’ is produced by popular media, and is fed back through the pores of the cultural unconscious, serving as a phantasmic fog around an unacknowledged intention to project ourselves and our world into the future. That is to say that the ‘now’ is really, also, the ‘then’ and this imagined ‘then’ retroactively clouds the possibilities of the ‘now’. Imagined futurities pro- scribe the potentialities of any present - what cannot be done later must certainly be out of reach now. Such is the conceit of the Enlightenment mind, which burrows its way into the post-human.
In an effort to diagnosis the debacle of embedding the ‘now’ into imagined futurities, I propose a queering of the popular malaise. Spike Jonze’s Her (2013) is widely regarded as a post-human film. But while we may be comforted thinking that this film provides representations of diasporic bodies, in the guise of the post-human character Samantha, an infernal resurrection has occurred. In Her, I find reborn the same rigid gender-sex-sexuality axis that has plagued Enlightenment thinking for so long. In rejection this, I assert that as post-humans our popular portrayals, and our academic writings ought to provoke and promote queerness wherever it emerges. For without an embrace of the radical queerness that sits near the core of post-humanism, our imaginings serve only to reproduce old epistemic violences.

Simandan D (2005) "New Ways in Geography" Timisoara, Editura Universitatii de Vest/ West University Press, 230 pp.

The first part of the volume - "Old Ways" - addresses the question whether geography as we know it is worth keeping. The first chapter argues that traditional scientific disciplines are not as bad as we sometimes like to think they are. This argument is then deployed in the second chapter to investigate whether geography specifically is worth keeping. The chapter concludes that even if we admit a Cinderella status for geography among the disciplines, this aspect brings some secondary benefits out of which a rejuvenated geography can emerge. The second part of the book – "New Ways" – discusses some lines of flight towards this rejuvenated geography. Given the editorial constraints, I selected three possible new ways on which I have started to work lately. Thus, chapter three explores the stakes of an engagement between geography and metaphysics in the analytic tradition, chapter four makes some suggestions about how to understand the relativity of norms in geographical practice, and chapter five brings together two case studies that help explain why we need to pay sustained attention to the vicious logic of epistemic neglect.

An intellectual might argue that history is as old as time itself, but the post-structuralist individual questions the definition of time and the use of the word history. What does time refer to and what does history mean? Sources and academia also fall into this abyss of criticism. Thought and intellectualism are words that do not necessarily have a tangible basis and you as a reader making an interpretation is based on your individual biases and that may differ from the writer's intention.

Geography means earth writing, and so it is perhaps fitting that writing itself has become a primary intellectual battleground in contemporary geographical thought. This paper advocates for metaphorical earth writing, arguing that it unchains our geographical imaginations from the shackles of our disciplinary past by boldly embracing geopoetics. I hope to spark debate by promoting the un-disciplining of geography as a means to open up a theoretical space for voice, where a material space of emancipation might follow. The notion that our epistemological, ontological, and methodological choices are not apolitical decisions without consequence guides my inquiry. Accordingly I critique the accusation of esotericism as a narrative that reifies the false dichotomy between academia and society. Aversion to metaphor fails to recognize the epistemological challenge it raises and underestimates how jargon combats commonsense notions that reinforce hierarchical power relations. How we write the earth constitutes a political choice, where disciplining others into a singular way of knowing, being, and doing geography is an affront to the possibilities of space. When we make space for earth writing as a beautiful flourishing of geopoetics, we place the earth at the center of experience, releasing the light and energy of a more powerful geography.

This paper looks to Hong Sang-soo’s 2010 film, Oki’s Movie, to analyze how a middle-aged male filmmaker attempts to express the subjective experience of a woman who is three decades his junior. This semi-episodic film tells four stories from the alternate perspectives of Korean men and women of different generations. Instead of simply reversing dominant gender roles, the film’s complex semi-episodic narrative encourages the audience to engage with multiple contradictory male and female perspectives simultaneously. The effects of these strategies are demonstrated through an analysis of the interaction between gender and narrative structure within the film’s four overlapping storylines. I argue that the way that Hong’s film confuses the separation between the diegeses of each episode encourages the viewer to recognize the different webs of systemic and interpersonal power that shape all gender identities. I also survey various theories of voice-over (particularly those of Britta Sjogren and Kaja Silverman) to show how point of view is sexually differentiated between each episode. Each character is then examined as a surrogate for the director himself in order to show the vital role that self-reference plays as a tool by which the author deconstructs their own privilege and authority. Finally, my paper expands the film’s gender politics to a larger critique of “phallocentric” theories of sexual difference and cultural studies. The film’s presentation of multiple subjectivities is framed as a powerful opposition to overly essentializing approaches to sexuality, identity and film theory. This approach toward Oki’s Movie shows how an author in a majority position may respectfully speak to the subjective experience of a member of their social minority.

This article engages various works of Allan Luke that innovatively use his personal and family narratives within his intersectional, interdisciplinary, and transnational engagements of education and social science research. The article looks at some of the contributions that Luke's work makes to the literature, particularly within the context of those who come from minoritized backgrounds, and from Chinese and Asian diasporic communities around the Pacific Rim.

"In this paper, through an examination of mostly British make-over television programs we examine how the feminine has become a new site of limitless possibility and endless consumption, the fulcrum of intensifying processes of neo-liberal reinvention of continuously making over the self into successful, post-feminist bourgeois subjects. We argue that the central premise of contemporary make-over programs is the question: “Is the transformation of abject subjects possible?” We also suggest the focal object of transformation in many shows is the working class woman who fails both as subject/object of self-reflexivity, desire, and consumption. We argue it is her mind and body that represents a core site of abjection—a subjectivity designated as uninhabitable and therefore also a central site of regulation. It is upon the working class woman’s
mind and body that the drama of possibility and limitation of neo-liberal reinvention is played out. We also argue that it is perhaps in reference to that which is made abject and uninhabitable that it becomes possible to talk about class as a dynamic of identifying against what we must not be, and which fuels incessant attempts to refashion selves into generalized and normalized bourgeois
feminine subjects."

Bu çalışmada iki eser arasında esas alınacak ortak nokta ise her iki romanda da kadın başkahramanlara ses verilerek egemen söylemin bozguna uğratılmasıdır. Egemen ataerkil söylem ile kendi hayat öykülerini anlatan kadın başkarakterlerin kullandığı dil arasındaki ilişki, farklı iki kültürde ve benzer dönemlerde gelenek ve tutucu ahlak gibi aygıtlarla benzer şekilde işleyen ataerkil sistemdeki " kadın kimliği " göz önünde bulundurularak incelenecektir. Her iki romanda da nesneleştirilen kadın, Pınar Kür'de Melek karakteriyle iki erkek söylemin arasına sıkıştırılmış, kendisine ses verilse de sonunda hem gerçek hem mecazi anlamda sesini, dolayısıyla varlığını, kaybetmiş; Almudena Grandes'de ise Lulú karakteriyle kadın öznelliğini kurabilmiş ve hem gerçek hem mecazi anlamda sesini sürdürebilmiştir.
ABSTRACT
The novel Asılacak Kadın (The woman to be hanged) by Pınar Kür and the novel Las edades de Lulú (The ages of Lulu) by Almudena Grandes present many similarities. Both novels were written under similar political circumstances around the same period, both received similar reactions in the countries they originated (Turkey and Spain) and they were both adapted for cinema. In this study, the common point of the novels to be focused on is that the hegemonic patriarchal discourse is subversed by female protagonists narrating their own stories. The relationship between the hegemonic patriachal discourse and the language used by the female protagonists will be examined taking into consideration female identity in two different, yet similar patriarchal systems functioning in similar ways with apparatuses such as tradition and conservative moral values around the same period. Woman, commodified in both novels, is oppressed between two male discourses in the character of Melek in Pınar Kür's novel; although she is given voice, in the end she's deprived of it literally and metaphorically, therefore losing her existence. Whereas the female protagonist Lulú in Almudena Grandes's novel is granted the chance to construct female subjectivity and sustain her existence as a subject.

Ce séminaire intitulé Théories féministes a pour but de fournir aux étudiant-es les outils nécessaires pour contextualiser les connaissances acquises dans le champ des études féministes, de genre et des sexualités à la lumière des questionnements théoriques, politiques, sociaux et culturels les plus centraux soulevés dans ces champs et liés à des thématiques choisies (corps, in/capacités, identités, émotions et affects, enjeux intersexes, enjeux environnementaux, etc.). Fondé sur une approche interdisciplinaire et intersectionnelle, ce séminaire vise à développer une compréhension approfondie des relations qu’entretiennent les théories féministes avec d’autres théories anti-oppressions, comme les théories de l’affect, les théories antiracistes, postcolonialistes, anticapitalistes, anticapacitistes, queers, transféministes, antigrossophobie, etc. Les thèmes suivants seront abordés : les mouvements sociaux, la sexualité, la diversité de sexes et genres, la santé, les oppressions liées à la race, à la classe, à la grosseur et aux capacités, le féminisme populaire et le féminisme environnemental.
