Subtitling of televised foreign‐language material not only changes language; it also switches from the spoken to the written mode, and it presents itself ‘in real time’, as a dynamic text type. Hence, due to the complex, ‘diagonal’ nature of subtitling, the subtitler must possess the musical ears of an interpreter, the stylistic sensitivity of a literary translator, the visual acuteness of a film cutter, and the esthetic sense of a book designer.The author discusses subtitling in the context of language transfer, and suggests nine basic fields to consider when creating ‐ and evaluating ‐ interlingual subtitles for television and video.

We present the development and use of a novel distributed geohazard modeling environment for the analysis and interpretation of large scale earthquake data sets. Our work demonstrates, for the first time, how earthquake-related surface deformation measured from satellite images using imageodesy algorithms is coupled with analysis and simulation using finite-element numerical models.

The increase in traffic intensity and complexity of the railway system demands new methods for real-time traffic control. This paper introduces the architecture, the approach and the current implementation of an advanced Traffic Management System (TMS) able to optimise traffic fluency in large railway networks equipped with either fixed or moving block signalling systems.The TMS takes into account both the actual position and speed of each train in the area and the actual status of the infrastructure, and the dynamic characteristics of the train and the characteristics of the infrastructure such gradients, admissible speeds, signal positions and signal patterns.Potential conflicts can be predicted in advance and solved in real time, by managing the order of trains, or using alternative routes if possible, and by issuing proper speed recommendations to train drivers. In this way, the TMS prevents or limits the number of unplanned stops and the accompanying journey time loss.

ABSTRACT In this paper we discuss issues in real-time image processing, including applications, approaches and hardware.
