The interface, Francois Dagognet wrote, is a “fertile nexus.” Rather than an immaterial surface or an impartial gateway, the interface itself continually draws upon political, social and cultural sources, all which work to encourage particular productivities while suppressing or negating others. This article explores the specific properties of Amazon Alexa, the “digital assistant” for the home who plays music, delivers news, tells jokes, and plays games. Of course, Alexa interfaces with content — a deluge of diverse applications and information are smoothly brought together through her consistent voice and coherent personality. But Alexa also interfaces with history — she is part of a longer genealogy of gendered interfaces from Siri and Cortana all the way back to Bell Labs, a genealogy predicated on a subjectivity of subservience. Alexa also interfaces with capital — the “Skills” she can learn, and which the user must remember and repeat, are based on a landscape of corporate brands and commercial products. Finally, Alexa interfaces with culture — the predominantly white male culture of contemporary software production shapes the type of sexuality and subjectivity embodied by the bot. Following Alexander Galloway, the interface can thus be understood less as a mere palimpsest of previous traces, and more as a generative performance in the present. The runaway success of Alexa has established her as a universal mediator for the smart home and a model for the internet of things. As the prototype of a technical vision, Alexa’s performative interfacing — and the politics enacted through it — need critical examination.

For many years, numerous innovative housing projects (IHPs) have introduced visions on the future of
everyday life by foreseeing the success of various (smart) technologies at home. In general, these projects are
thought to be ‘futuristic, industrial, expensive and gadgetry’ (Mohammadi, 2010). However, many of the
experimental technologies of that time have already infiltrated into today’s daily activities. Therefore, the
motivation of this paper is to explore the integration (level) of technologies into the home environment. The
goal of this paper is to analyse the (level of) integration of technology promised in IHPs realized between the
period of 1920-2010. This is done by creating an overview of determined IHPs of which the innovative
technologies used are identified and analysed accordingly.
The analysis of integration is conducted by creating an overview of the existing IHPs. The sampling unit of the
study is determined to thirty-eight (38) IHPs, between the period from 1927 to 2008. The cases are examined
based on their following factors: ‘date’, ‘typology’, ‘goal’, 'initiator/designer' and 'prominent technological
novelty at that time'. Five typologies come forward in the IHPs: 'conceptual' (ideas transferred to paper),
'showcases' (open exhibition for visitors), 'experimental lab' (monitoring use/adjusted frequently), ‘living lab’
(monitored and inhabited, but short-term), and 'inhabited dwelling' (taken into production and used). Thus,
each IHP is examined individually by visually presenting its factors, and the IHPs in a shared typology are
discussed in relation to each other.
The novelty of this study is to synthesize the history of the IHPs through their contribution to the adaptation of
(smart) technologies in the home environment as well as in architectural design. The added value lies in the
insights of the factors of the cases and how they affect the integration of technology into daily life. In the
conclusion, the rate of the necessity of the technologies in the home environment is reconsidered and
discussed regarding the impact of IHPs on the architecture of today.

Smart home technologies have become, in the last few years, a very active topic of research. However, many scientists working in this field do not possess smart home infrastructure allowing them to conduct satisfactory experiments in a concrete environment with real data. To address this issue, this paper presents a new flexible 3D smart home infrastructure simulator developed in Java specifically to help researchers working in the field of activity recognition. A set of pre-recorded scenarios, made with data extracted from clinical trials, will be included with the simulator in order to give a common foundation for testing activity recognition algorithms. The goal is to release the SIMACT simulator as an open source component that will benefit the whole smart home research community.

The recent advancements in the field of embedded systems enables us to develop a reliable smart home system for easier access to home appliances. The aim is to provide a seamless integration of various methods of controlling appliances in the smart home aiding the physically challenged. This can be done by means of a non-invasive Brain-Computer Interface (BCI), text messaging and a personalized web page. This paper proposes a novel method wherein the physically challenged people can control the appliances by using Emotiv EPOC headset which reads the Electroencephalographic (EEG) signals recorded from the brain activity and communicates with an Arduino board. The proposed system has been built with the help of an Ethernet shield which runs a webserver, and a GSM shield which communicates with the Arduino through text messaging (SMS).

Visually impaired people need help to travel safely. To make this possible, many travel aids have been designed. Among them, the cane which is considered as a symbol of visual deficiency in the whole world. In this work, we build an electronic white cane using sensors' technology. This intelligent cane detects obstacles within 2m on the ground or in height, and sends vocal instructions via a Bluetooth headset. We have also built a mobile application to track in real time the visually impaired and a WEB application to control the access to the mobile one. We use ultrasound, IR sensors and a raspberry pi to process data. We use Python as programming language for electronic devices. The mobile application is Android. Though, the WEB application is a REST API developed using Python and Java Script.

As a proof of concept for anticipation based assisted living we introduce a particular kind of adaptive architecture that integrates intelligent materials within the encompassing IoT. For this purpose, data regarding the anticipatory profile of individuals and the use of machine learning in capturing individual needs, was acquired. The structure presented was tested in partial applications. Feedback from those working in assisted living was integrated in pur suant attempts at modelling adaptive architecture structures.

sebagai akses untuk keluar masuk rumah setiap anggota keluarga. Jika sistem mendeteksi wajah
dan diakui oleh sistem sebagai anggota keluarga dan di sahkan dengan pemindaian sidik jari yang
sesuai maka akses akan diberikan. Sistem yang akan diusulkan bertujuan untuk menerapkan kode
perangkat lunak untuk pendeteksi wajah dan pemindai sidik jari menggunakan raspberry pi.

Connectivity is one of the most important factor
that may affect as a great benefit to various
domains for the next era of the IoT(Internet of
Things). However, securing connectivity
requires various industry stakeholders to access
freely which cause business and regulatory
issues. The purpose of this study is to explore
challenges in implementing market based IoT
industry, focusing on connectivity issues. We
have investigated cases of the smart home
industry in Korea, presented implications based
on the literatures and the in-depth interviews.
As a result, newly emerging industry based on
technology like IoT tend to have conflicts
between service providers and network
providers. And it expands towards political
issues on data traffic and fostering spectrum
managements by private sectors. Moreover,
connectivity with device-platform-service
protocols and compatibility tend to be
monopolistic structured. Our implications
suggested supplementing ideas for improving
ways of establishing regulations.

This article analyzes recent architectural and product designs for computerized smart homes. The smart home is a sentient space where human subjects and domestic objects speak to one another via intelligent agents and internet connections. This article explores the industrial logic behind this new vision of home (i.e. the links between the hi-tech industry and the building/home appliance industries) and examines the mode of subjectivity the smart home demands. There is a growing requirement for Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure to ensure low response time to provision latency-sensitive real-time applications such as health monitoring, disaster management, and smart homes. Fog computing offers a means to provide such requirements, via a virtualized intermediate layer to provide data, computation, storage, and networking services between Cloud datacenters and end users. A key element within such Fog computing environments is resource management. While there are existing resource manager in Fog computing, they only focus on a subset of parameters important to Fog resource management encompassing system response time, network bandwidth, energy consumption and latency. To date no existing Fog resource manager considers these parameters simultaneously for decision making, which in the context of smart homes will become increasingly key. In this paper, we propose a novel resource management technique (ROUTER) for fog-enabled Cloud computing environments, which leverages Particle Swarm Optimization to optimize simultaneously. The approach is validated within an IoT-based smart home automation scenario, and evaluated within iFogSim toolkit driven by empirical models within a small-scale smart home experiment. Results demonstrate our approach results a reduction of 12% network bandwidth, 10% response time, 14% latency and 12.35% in energy consumption.

Abstract—This paper describes an evaluation framework for a smart home project that utilizes sensor technologies to detect activity levels and monitor older adults. The study setting is TigerPlace, an independent retirement community designed to follow the model of aging in place. Technologies used include a stove sensor, a bed sensor, a gait monitor and a video sensor network. The evaluation framework includes focus groups with end users (older adults and health care providers) as well as observations. Preliminary findings indicate an overall positive attitude of older adults towards smart home sensors and a valid and reliable performance. This paper presents a security framework that continuously authenticates smart homes users in order to make sure that only authorized ones are allowed to control their Internet of Things (IoT) devices while, at the same time, preventing them in case of performing abnormal and dangerous control actions. To do so, control commands under normal operation of both users and devices, are first implicitly traced to build a One Class Support Vector Machine (OCSVM) model as a baseline from which deviations (i.e., anomalous commands) should be detected and rejected, while normal observations (i.e., normal commands) should be considered as legitimate and allowed to be executed. Experiments conducted on our artificial datasets show the efficiency of such user behavior-based approach achieving at least 95.29% and 4.12% of True Positive (TP) and False Positive (FP) rates, respectively.

The main objective of this work is to design and construct a microcomputer based system: to control electric appliances such as light, fan, heater, washing machine, motor, TV, etc. The paper discusses two major approaches to control home appliances. The first involves controlling home appliances using timer option. The second approach is to control home appliances using voice command. Moreover, it is also possible to control appliances using Graphical User Interface. The parallel port is used to transfer data from computer to the particular device to be controlled. An interface box is designed to connect the high power loads to the parallel port. This system will play an important role for the elderly and physically disable people to control their home appliances in intuitive and flexible way. With the proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT), smart home concepts become popular nowadays. This paper demonstrates the real time applications with the help of IoT for smart home Concept. PIC16f676 microcontroller has been used for the system for low power consumption and a comparative analysis with the existing commercial product has been demonstrated. A remote controller is used for controlling the ON/OFF mode of different home appliances.
