Split

In this work, the author’s starting point is a maximum quality and functional territorial organisation of Croatia, especially its littoral area. Adriatic Croatia, as well as Eastern (Pannonian) and Northwestern Croatia, is one of the three defined (future) Euroregions NUTS II in Croatia. It was suggested in its current territorial coverage by the Republic of Croatia, and accepted by Eurostat in 2007. It includes all littoral counties (7) of Croatia, covering 24.7 thousand km2 with 1.4 million inhabitants (2011). The paper discusses a possible differentiation of this strategic littoral Adriatic area on three functional (gravitational) regions of the third level (NUTS III) according to the criteria of the Croatian Government on efficient decentralisation and new regionalisation of Croatia. U članku se analiziraju vojne operacije na području Podvučjaka i bitka za Odžak kojom krajem svibnja 1945. završava Drugi svjetski rat na europskom tlu. U prvom dijelu prezentiraju se geografska i demografska obilježja ovog prostora, a u drugom borbe koje su se ondje vodile između 1941. i 1944. s posebnim osvrtom na organizaciju obrane, ali i međusobne odnose partizana i četnika. U trećem dijelu analizira se položaj Podvučjaka u završnim borbama 1945., a u četvrtom bitka za Odžak koja je okončana padom grada 27. ili 28. svibnja iste godine. U posljednjem dijelu pokušavaju se identificirati lokacije logora i grobišta, ali i počinitelja ratnih i poratnih zločina nad hrvatskim stanovništvom zatečenim na tom području potkraj svibnja 1945. Slijedećeg dana predale su se i preostale njemačke postrojbe u Čehoslovačkoj. Garnizon na otoku Alderney u kanalu La Manche predao se 16. svibnja, a manja skupina njemačkih vojnika izgubila je radio vezu te ostala izolirana na norveškom otoku Svalbard sve do rujna 1945. Da Spalato, Salona, Šolta a Venezia e Padova, tra una costa e l’altra dell’Adriatico: questa è la proposta di Iter marulianum, un viaggio speciale sulle tracce dello spalatino Marko Marulić (1450-1524), umanista cristiano di fama mondiale, considerato in Croazia “padre della letteratura” nazionale. Il percorso compiuto lungo questa ricerca si snoda perciò attraverso luoghi e scritti della formazione di Marulić, altrettante testimonianze della vitale ricchezza di rapporti intrattenuti dall’umanista sull’una e sull’altra sponda, dell’importanza del centro e della periferia in cui si collocano, della felice simbiosi tra otium e negotium, patrio e universale, che ne caratterizzano l’opera.

The elites of the cities of northern and central mainland Dalmatia – Zadar, Trogir, and Split, claiming the origin in the Antiquity, and in some cases with genealogical ties stretching at least to the tenth and eleventh centuries, constantly demanded “fresh blood” in order to be able to sustain their existence. The immigrant families who can be identified as such in the sources came already as an accepted elite in their communities of origin, whether of Croatian, Venetian, or some other background. As being already members of an elite, regardless of their origin, helped by their wealth and acquiring landed property in the district, they integrated quickly into the circle of the Dalmatian urban elite, using the marriages with the “old” elite. The offspring of these marriages was guaranteed places in the Great Council, membership in which was mandatory for recognizing of noble status since the first half of the fourteenth century. On the other hand the political support of structures of power from outside, whether by the Croatian magnates or Venetian government, did not play important role in the acceptance of the immigrants by the old elite nor could influence the creation of the noble standing of urban families.

Literature and psychology are two disciplines that should draw nourishment from one other, since their area of concern is essentially human. While psychology uses its techniques to explore what lies in the human mind, literature turns over the same ground using symbols and images. In other words, the mind creates ways to express its thoughts. Hence, art can become a tool of psychology, revealing what the artist otherwise supresses. Marble, color, letters, or visual symbols can be used by artists to create moods and change emotions, but to see the underlying reality it is necessary to understand why an artist creates art. Even though the form might change from age to age, there is one question that always remains relevant: what is the source of creating art? In this thesis, although the correlation between them is highly complex and incontestable, the relationship between psychology and literature in both written and visual works in the 20 th and 21 st centuries will be analyzed. It is widely accepted that Freud is among the most influential psychoanalysts, and that is why this study seeks to analyze the significance of Freudian concepts in the films "Psycho" and "Split" and in the novel Mrs. Dalloway. It attempts to provide close readings of these films and book through the lens of Psychoanalytic Literary Criticism. This work will try to show how human psychology is affected by society and its problems. Either war or the conduct of parents shaped the behaviours of the characters, generally in a negative way, and made them troublemakers for society. Ultimately, in this thesis, the effects on artistic creation of feelings, pain, inner conflicts, identity confusion, personality clash, and identity disorders that war, society, and parents brought about, will be viewed. The relationship between psychoanalysis and literature and their effects on the texts and the creators of those texts will be shown through the lens of Freud's ideas. That is, in this study, the characters of "Psycho", "Split", and Mrs. Dalloway will be analyzed through the Psychoanalytic Literary Criticism of Sigmund Freud.

The Canadian personal income tax system does not pay much attention to whether the amount of money an individual brings home is supplemented by the income of a spouse or not. That means that families where one spouse earns more than the other get taxed at a higher rate than families where two working partners earn the same total income split evenly between two paycheques. In fact, a family with just a single earner making $70,000 a year pays 30 per cent more in taxes every year than a family with two partners making $35,000 a year. A single-earner family taking in $120,000 a year pays the same income tax as a dual earning couple making $141,000 between them.The federal Conservative government has at least suggested it wants to finally level that playing field — nearly six decades after a royal commission recommended that the income tax system be changed to recognize total family household income, rather than focusing on each individual’s income. The “Barbican of Europe”. The plague of Split and the strategy of defence in the Adriatic area between the Venetian territories and the Ottoman empire (Eighteenth century)

In 1731 Split, a Dalmatian port under the rule of Venice, and its province were struck by the plague which, according to the Venetian magistrates, had arrived transported by infected merchandise coming from Jaice, an Ottoman domain. With the onset of the epidemic the Venetian authorities sent Simone Contarini, Governor-General in Dalmatia and Albania, with the task of blocking the spread of the epidemic. This article focuses on such an outbreak. The goal is to evaluate the impact made by the institutions on the spreading of the plague and discover what that could reveal about the biological environment. Highlighting the ways in which the risk was constructed socially allows us to advance hypotheses on the spreading of the plague, giving us a way to identify the actors capable of introducing and/or avoiding the norms. The analysis of anthropic factors (institutional behaviours and interventions) side by side with biological factors allows us to offer explanations able to shed some light on the apparently casual ways with which, in the context of Venetian health policies, the plague struck or spared cities, villages, homes and families.

Cilj rada je prostorno-povijesnom analizom izgradnje i širenja grada Splita u razdoblju od kraja 19. do kraja 20. stoljeća, ukazati na značaj rimske centurijacije na teritoriju salonitanskog agera kao prostorne osnove za rast grada. Unatoč dosadašnjim istraživanjima, antička izmjera i podjela zemljišta nije dovoljno prepoznata niti kao osnova urbanizacije pojedinih dijelova grada Splita, niti kao arheološko naslijeđe kontinuiteta organizacije prostora od antike do danas. Brojni sačuvani i kroz povijest transformirani tragovi centurijacije ukazuju na njenu trajnost, urbanističku prilagodljivost te višestruku vrijednost u formiranju antropogenog krajolika. Doprinos istraživanja uključuje prostornu reinterpretaciju dijelova izgrađenog gradskog tkiva Splita, polazišta za odgovarajuću valorizaciju i prezentaciju tragova centurijacije te moguću primjenu u suvremenom urbanističkom planiranju.

This paper presents three thus far unpublished epigraphic monuments used as spolia. All three were registered in the narrower urban core of Split, i.e., in the area of Diocletian’s Palace.1 Two are on the façades
of buildings, and one is built into a courtyard wall. All of these fragments were originally parts of grave monuments: a funerary altar, a stele or titulus, and a sarcophagus or stele. The origin of these spolia cannot be established with any certainty, since they were all built into structures that considerably post-date Diocletian’s Palace. It is assumed that the two fragments built into façades had not been published until now
because they had previously been covered with stucco which had been removed in the meantime. These two monuments may be dated to the 1st to 3rd centuries, i.e., prior to Diocletian’s Palace, while the remaining
fragment may have possibly belonged to a later period. The texts of the inscriptions reveal several names that are rather rare in the inscriptions of Dalmatia.

Ovaj rad predstavlja koncept istraživanja obrtničke svakodnevice na temelju serija podataka sačuvanih u notarskim spisima srednjovjekovne splitske kancelarije. Prije svega, predstavit će se ukratko sačuvana privatno-pravna građa splitske komune s polovice 15. st. i razložiti njezina paleografsko- diplomatička analiza, dok će glavni dio izlaganja biti usmjeren na samu metodologiju istraživanja notarskih dokumenata. U tu svrhu predstavit će se vrste i obrazložiti važnost pojedinih bilježničkih ugovora, prikazati metode njihove klasifikacije te način sistematizacije najvažnijih notarskih podataka, a glavni će dio rada prezentirati digitalnu bazu podataka sa svim varijablama relevantnim za proučavanje obrtničke svakodnevice kasnosrednjovjekovnog Splita. Naposlijetku, ovaj će prilog predstaviti i kvantitativnu metodu analize prikupljenih podataka, a potom će iznijeti i neke mogućnosti njihove interpretacije. Pojedinačni dokumenti, naime, ne mogu u potpunosti objasniti složene pojave i procese komunalne svakodevice, ali se proučavanjem većeg broja notarskih spisa, njihovim međusobnim uspoređivanjem i uočavanjem stalnih ponavljanja u njima, mogu donijeti pouzdani zaključci o srednjovjekovnoj stvarnosti. Stoga ovaj rad želi naglasiti važnost privatno-pravne građe u medievističkim istraživanjima, posebice u proučavanjima komunalnih društava istočnog Jadrana.

The monastery of St Peter de Gumay was founded sometime around 1080. Its cartulary contains notes written mostly before 1105 and not later than 1241. There are a few notes from the 14th c. Ethnic names were only rarely used by the scribes of the cartulary. Although we could expect a more often use of designations 'Croats', 'Dalmatians', 'Slavs' or 'Latins', in the first part of the cartulary there are only three mentions of Croats and never any of the other three identities. There are also designations of local origin. The most frequent is 'de Tugari', meaning people from the village (district) in the vicinity of the monastery. In a similar way there are described also other people living in nearby villages or districts. A somewhat broader 'circle of identification' comprises of inhabitants of different Dalmatian towns.
The lapidary genealogy of the family of Rusin Morsticus poses the question about the relation between Slavs and others (as does the 1176 charter regarding a dispute between the monastery and certain 'Slavs' and 'Latins'). Rusin Morsticus was a Croatian dignitary who's brother was Slauiz rex. In the 1176 charter Rusin's donation was confirmed by his son, Petrus Slauus and by Peter's uncle Slauizo. This means that the designation 'Slav' was used for the members of this lineage through two generations. Why was exactly this family highlighted as being Slavic, in a surrounding in which the majority had Slavic names and obviously spoke Slavonic remains unclear. By the second half of the 11th c. even the citizens of Split were strongly Slavicized. A few decades later the Split historian Thomas the Archdeacon will distinguish clearly between Latins (citizens of Dalmatian towns) and Croats (or Slavs, whom he sometimes identifies with Goths). The last part of the cartulary, containing notes from the 14th century, differs from the previous parts in mentioning more often the Croatian name. The organizing and strengthening of the lesser nobility which gathered into the 'Brotherhood of the twelve Croatian tribes' resulted in an early expressions of 'national' identity among all strata of nobility and found its way onto the pages of the cartulary.
Ethnic labeling was not a usual practice in Croatia and Dalmatia in the second half of the 11th c. Split was incorporated into the Croatian kingdom and the only differences among people recorded by the authors of the notes were local ones. Only 'real' foreigners, the Lombards, were labeled with their ethnic name. With the growing separation of the communes from their hinterland, during the late 12th c., ethnic differentiation became more expressed. But again, it was tending to describe territorial separation, rather than the ethnic one. Finally, in the Late Middle Ages the expression of ethnic/national identity became more common.

The paper deals with gravestone inscriptions of Armenian and Greek merchants from the Dominican church in Split. The Armenian inscriptions, along with a Greek one from 1637 from the tomb for foreigners, are respectively dated to 1624 and 1678. The inscriptions, recorded in the 19th century by Francesco Carrara and Mijat Sabljar, are an interesting testimony to the lively trade that took place via the Lazaretto in Split. They
tell of the fates of Christian merchants and their forgotten role in Levantine trade. The names of Philipos, son of Mkrtich, Grigor, son of Karapet, and Giannoulis, a merchant from Pogoniani, have all been brought to light. In the case of Armenian and Greek inscriptions from Split, the phenomena of marginality in art, first systematically dealt with in Croatian art history by Ljubo Karaman, confirm the multiculturalism of Split’s heritage and specifically pave the way for the idea of memento mori – an after-life of the Baroque period.

Thomas the Archdeacon (13th c.) left a convincing account about the translation of the bodies of Ss Domnius and Anastasius from the ruins of Salona to Split, which had allegedly been undertaken by the first archbishop of Split, John of Ravenna, presumably in the 7th c. This account has influenced scholarly writing on this topic till the present day. The belief that the two bodies were deposited in the cathedral of Split was also the reason for the Pope Leo VI in 928 to grant the metropolitan position to the (arch)bishop of Split in spite of the existence of the chapel of St Venantius within the Lateran complex, in which pope John IV (640-642) had collected relics of different Dalmatian and Istrian martyrs, among them Domnius and Anastasius. The author tries to prove that there is reason enough to doubt Thomas’ report.
Thomas also writes about two different saints with the same name Domnius. The one who rests in Split was believed to be a disciple of Peter, while the other was a martyr from the time of Diocletian. He was buried in the place of his martyrdom, near Borgo San Donnino, not far from Piacenza. The citizens of Split stole his body, believing that this was their saint protector. This confusion was Thomas’ invention, an attempt to reconcile different traditions about two martyrs with the same name, in the genre of furtum sacrum. The first report, describing how John of Ravenna and his companions brought the relics from the ruins of Salona, hiding in fear of the pagan Slavs, belongs to the same genre. Neither of them should be treated as a report on actual events.
By describing how John had first discovered the body of St Anastasius, and only after realizing the mistake unearthed also Domnius’ relics, Thomas maybe reveals a possible priority which St Anastasius enjoyed over Domnius, before the latter became the most important protector of Split. Thomas story served several purposes: it legitimated the church of Split as one having roots in apostolic times, it showed that Dalmatia was one of the provinces from which relics originated, it prevented Hungarian rulers or Croatian lords from eventually claiming the relics, and it supported the communal identity of Split by ascribing the discovery of the relics to “all citizens”.
The analysis of the sarcophagus containing Domnius’ remains shows that it has been reshaped around 1200, which might be an indicator of an intensification of the cult in the time of the formation of the Split commune.
Thomas knows nothing about the (arch)bishops of Salona and Split between 602 and 787, except for John of Ravenna about whose existence and dating scholarly opinions vary. On the other hand, almost all of the Salonitan cults, including the one of St Venantius, fell into oblivion sometime after the mid-seventh century. Split had its own cults, like the local cult of St Felix or the Byzantine military cults introduced in the time of Justinian (St Theodore, St Martin). There is no trace of Salonitan cults in Split before the mid-ninth century, and then only of Ss Domnius and Anastasius accompanied by Ss Cosmas and Damian who were also Byzantine saints popular in Justinian’s epoch.
The author argues that there was no direct continuity of urban life from Salona to Split, because in Late Antiquity both urban settlements existed next to each other, and the extinction of Salona did not necessarily mean the translation of its function and its identity to Split. This would mean that the church of Split was not a continuation of the archbishopric of Salona but that it had an origin, development, and identity of its own. Thomas’ story about John of Ravenna, supported by other evidence, seems convincing regarding an attempt to raise the church of Split to the rank of a bishopric, but there is no evidence that this attempt was successfully continued after John’s episcopacy. It was only by the end of the 8th century that material and written sources testify to a renewal of the church of Split.
It seems that Thomas was not aware of the existence of the Passion of St Domnius, contained in the manuscript known as Historia Salonitana Maior and dated into the 16th c. HSM is a version of Thomas’ Historia Salonitana, with some chapters left out and a number of sources added into Thomas’ original text. This Passion tells a more detailed story about the life and death of St Domnius than what Thomas tells us. This Passion was most probably preserved not in Split, but in Zadar, although it is plausible that its author was, as some believe, Hesihius, the 5th-century bishop of Salona. Other evidence also supports the thesis that Zadar was the place where the oldest documents regarding the ecclesiastical history of Dalmatia survived the turbulent Early Middle Ages, while the archive of Salona perished together with the city. From 7th and 8th century Split, too, only few documents most have survived until Thomas’ time. One of them was the legend that the bodies of Ss Domnius and Anastasius were kept in the cathedral. It was probably composed around 800 as an argument in the competition with Zadar for the primacy in Dalmatia. Thomas used it as a core for his more developed account which primarily served for the strengthening of communal identity.

This study examined the association between leg flexibility, leg length, jump height, and split leap movement scores at various levels of rhythmic gymnasts. U životu srednjovjekovnog Splita važno mjesto zauzimala je i njegova hagiografska baština, legende o mučeničkim životima i čudotvornim moćima svetaca što ih Splićani, u stoljećima kasne antike i ranog srednjeg vijeka, prigrlili kao svoje zaštitnike. Nekima od njih utjecalo se društvo u cjelini dok su drugi, pak, postali posebno omiljeni u pojedinim slojevima splitskog srednjovjekonog društva. Ovaj rad proučava štovanje svetaca prema podacima sačuvanim u oporukama splitskih obrtnika sredine 15. st. te prema njima pokušava utvrditi razinu pobožnosti splitskog civilnog društva u srednjem vijeku. Na temelju podataka u sačuvanim oporukama rad pokušava utvrditi koji su sveci splitskim obrtnicima bili najomiljeniji, kojima se od njih najviše legata oporučno ostavljalo te koji su se sveci smatrali zaštitnicima pojedinih obrtničkih djelatnosti. Rad ujedno pokušava ocrtati utjecaj hagiografskih legendi na oporučno ostavljanje legata pojedinim splitskim obrtničkim bratovštinama.

Zvonik splitske katedrale prije restauracije bio je pravi lapidarij, s velikim brojem antickih i kasnoantickih stupova, kapitela i natpisa te s jednim reljefom. Ugradnja spolija imala je i simbolickih razloga, kao dokaz starine i ugleda grada Splita koji se, posebno u crkvenom smislu, smatrao nasljednikom Salone.

U nizu doseljenih altarističkih radionica u Dalmaciji 18. stoljeća svoj je trag ostavila i radionica braće Pia i Vicka Dall'Acqua iz Chioggie. Zahvaljujući dosad istraženim arhivskim dokumentima koji svjedoče o njihovoj djelatnosti moguće je pratiti njihovo polustoljetno djelovanje na dalmatinskoj obali, otocima i unutrašnjosti gdje su podigli značajan broj mramornih oltara. U novoj je sredini ta radionica pokazala izvrsnu moć prilagodbe volji naručitelja, njihovim mogućnostima i potrebama, a modele i sheme usvojene na prostoru Veneta i Furlanije u određenoj mjeri transformirala. Njihova su djela bila pristupačna naručiteljima slabije platežne moći, a u provincijskoj je sredini njihova manira vrlo brzo postala poželjna.

The workshop of brothers Pio and Vicko Dall'Acqua from Chioggia left its trail within the phenomenon of settled altaristic workshops in 18th century Dalmatia. Researches of the archive documents that testify to their activities made it possible to look into their half-century activity on the Dalmatian coast, islands and inland where they have erected a large number of marble altars in the sacral interiors of Zadar, Šibenik and Split areas. In new environment the workshop transformed models and schemes adopted in the area of northeastern Italy, showing its excellent ability to adapt to needs and aspirations of local donors. Their works were accessible to modest donors, and in the provincial environment their mannerisms quickly became desirable.

The development of towns during the transition from Classical Antiquity to the Early Middle Ages is the least known stage in the entire poleogenesis process on the territory of Croatia. Although Croatian Classical archaeology has researched a number of significant towns, there are still no completely excavated urban settlements. This makes the study of the early mediaeval stage of towns with a Classical Antiquity nucleus and the transmission of the Classical Antiquity urban tradition into the Middle Ages rather difficult. The paper gives a historical overview of campaigns significant in understanding the poleogenesis of selected towns.

Diocletian&#39;s palace, built at the beginning of the 4th century, is the best preserved Late Roman palace in the world. The Palace, as all urbanized spaces, had its water supply and sewerage and, as an imperial building, the best one. All the former knowledge and findings of the sewage system, inside and outside of the Palace and new conclusions on project and realisation of this important, detaily planned and built roman infrastructural facilty are gathered in this article.
