"The past decade has witnessed a proliferation of writings on queer theories and practices.Drawing together established and emerging scholars in the field, this volume offers a broad, trans-disciplinary and international approach to queer studies. In the light of recent critical perspectives, it proposes a number of theoretical developments concerning three key thematic fields: theories, bodies and texts. The first section of the volume considers the embodied, sexed and gendered self and its problematic relation with queer theories, animal studies as well as with the representation of non-human and intersex identities. The second section explores a variety of modes of representation, – and/or misrepresentation – of queer embodied subjectivities, ranging from literature to media and performance. In analysing a variety of classic and contemporary texts, the contributors call into question

This essay explores the cultural geography of the Malay world writ large by examining the trajectories of texts beyond the conventional national and regional boundaries of Southeast Asian studies. Although the Malay world could be studied in relation to a number of transregional orientations, this essay highlights its interconnectedness with the Indian Ocean. This orientation offers a broad enough frame to examine the trans­ regional scale without losing sight of the local. The essay focuses on a collaborative effort at examining textual trajectories. It proposes a rethinking of the normative vocabulary of the nation­state by exploring the subterranean histories of the present. The essay proposes the term " Malay world " as a helpful vehicle for exploring the transregional connections that are not captured by the language of territory and boundedness. The cultural geography of the Malay world that emerges in this essay is multifarious as its interconnectedness with the Indian Ocean has taken complex and diverse forms. The trajectories of the texts examined have traced a world that has been enmeshed in the transregional traffic of people, goods, and ideas. The pervasiveness of the thinking and practice of the nation­state, has undermined, but not eliminated the multifarious cul­ tural geography of the Malay world.

This research article aims to survey the different methods and approaches employed in teaching English literature to the adult/college students. The present paper investigates that which methods and approaches are potential for enhancing students’ English literature learning in the classroom. This study contributes to the field of curriculum and pedagogy for reliable learning from the evaluation approaches in the classroom learning. This article tries to explore the techniques in literature classroom. Literature is a content based compulsory subject, such as poetry, prose, drama, etc. This paper reviews several tried and true innovative and exciting ideas for teaching literature in the world language classroom.

Multimedia content analysis refers to the computerized understanding of the semantic meanings of a multimedia document, such as a video sequence with an accompanying audio track. With a multimedia document, its semantics are embedded in multiple forms that are usually complimentary of each other, Therefore, it is necessary to analyze all types of data: image frames, sound tracks, texts that can be extracted from image frames, and spoken words that can be deciphered from the audio track. This usually involves segmenting the document into semantically meaningful units, classifying each unit into a predefined scene type, and indexing and summarizing the document for efficient retrieval and browsing. We review advances in using audio and visual information jointly for accomplishing the above tasks. We describe audio and visual features that can effectively characterize scene content, present selected algorithms for segmentation and classification, and review some testbed systems for video archiving and retrieval. In 1896 W B Yeats famously counselled John Millington Synge ‘to give up Paris’ and go to the Aran Islands. Yeats advised his friend to ‘live there as if you were one of the people themselves’ and ‘to express a life that has never found expression’. Synge took the advice and made his first journey to Aran in 1898. In the three months leading up to the trip, he read Pierre Loti’s Iceland Fisherman and took a copy with him as he made his first crossing to Aran. In 1917, another copy of this book was carried to another island off the Irish coast. It was taken to the Blasket Islands by Brian O Ceallaigh and given to Tomas O Criomhthain. Is postmodernism in many ways the empiricist-liberal tradition at the inevitable end of its intellectual and political tether? Or is postmodernism the ‘laughter of genius’ that art and argument in their traditional forms are dead? Can postmodernism be applied to social and economic issues whilst carrying a denial of the manner by which Western thought has shaped these issues? Can postmodernism provide moral pathways to help us with contemporary ethical issues? How can postmodernist thought encompass the activities of nurses, particularly in the area of psychiatric care? Can nurses afford postmodernist suppositions in the face of suffering and pain? If postmodernism exists, does it exist everywhere (as does nursing) or is it a more localized event?

Connected text reading is crucial to beginning reading development as this is where children apply the reading skills they are learning. The most recent version of the Australian Curriculum includes the requirement that teachers use both predictable and decodable texts in early reading instruction. As each text type is underpinned by a different approach to reading instruction, this creates a potential dilemma for teachers when implementing the curriculum. A preliminary study of the instructional practices used to teach reading in the first two years of schooling was therefore conducted to investigate how early years teachers make use of two different text types that are arguably incompatible. Abstract
This study selects novels from French and Spanish language traditions, which may not be available to English-speakers, in order to determine if specific aspects throw light on our understanding of Madrid as a destination. Marc Lambron's L'Impromptu de Madrid and Antonio Munoz Molina’s Mysteries of Madrid are taken as proof of the influence the narrative can exert on social daily life and consumption. Narrative foregrounds the fictions which are at stake in imagining the city as destination and also provides a vehicle for presenting the much broader social forces that converge in the author at the time of imagining and writing.

Background The Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission quarter-degree gridded-text product has a similar file format and a similar purpose as the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) 3G68 quarter-degree product. The GPM textgrid format is an hourly summary of surface precipitation retrievals from various GPM instruments and combinations of GPM instruments. The GMI Goddard Profiling (GPROF) retrieval provides the widest swath (800 km) and does the retrieval using the GPM Microwave Imager (GMI). This article describes a system for automatic synthesis of Polish speech developed over the last three years at the Speech Analysis and Synthesis Laboratory. The system's acoustic signal generator is a customized integrated circuit controlled from a PC AT computer which runs on original software consisting of editor, phonetic transcription, and digital parameter synthesis modules. The speech is synthesized in real time and is very comprehensible, which has opened up prospects for specific applications for the system. This study was conducted under IBPT Order No 412.

Social networking websites have been increasingly popular in the recent years. The users create and maintain their social networks by themselves in these websites by establishing or removing the connections to friends and sites of interests. The smart phones not only create a high availability for social network applications, but also serve for all forms of digital communication such as voice or video calls, e-mails and texts, which are also the ways to form or maintain our social network. In this paper, we deal with the problem of automatically generating and organizing social networks by analyzing and assessing mobile phone usage and interaction data. We assign weights to the different types of interactions. The interactions among users are then evaluated based on these weight values for certain periods of time. We use these values to rank the friends of users by a sports ranking algorithm, which recognizes the changes in the collected data over time.

In this article, we show how circulated diaries can be used as a source of knowledge about the display and normative standards of family life. The particular strength of the data lies in the circulation among members of a local public before reaching the researcher. This keeps researcher intervention low, while the data remain socially and culturally saturated. In addition, the method allows for comparative cultural research, which is illustrated by the examples taken from Norway and China. Having two sets of data from different contexts adds to the richness of the data by providing a contrast that is needed to illuminate the taken-for-granted.

El presente trabajo se propone indagar sobre los modelos de explicacion vinculados con el concepto de evolucion en los textos con destino a estudiantes del nivel polimodal en Argentina, a partir de categorias de analisis propuestas por Bar (2005). El modelo que se reconstruye muestra aspectos propios de los sistemas adaptativos, modelos que dan cuenta de fenomenos biologicos donde confluyen tanto variables endogenas como exogenas; donde el devenir del sistema no esta dado por el programa biologico, ni por las fluctuaciones ambientales en forma absoluta, sino por el libre juego entre ambos. Este modo de objetivar la vida y sus manifestaciones aportan a una vision mas total e integral sobre ella, perspectiva que la apartan del mecanicismo reduccionista y del finalismo vitalista.
