To date, the nascent consequential notion of 'multiple modernities' has been predominately grounded in historical research with the purpose of validating the theory. Yet, the notion of multiple modernities represents a radical transformation in the way modernity and, indeed, the contemporary world is viewed. As such, the central aim of this volume is to explore the implications and hidden understanding of the multiple modernitites research project beyond historical analysis in order to investigate its wide ranging omnipresent implications as they exist in communication and in the social order of societal membership in contemporary societies.
This volume collects new research about multiple modernities and globalization. Int shows the new turn of sociological theory in the contemporary scene with respect to multiple modernities, multi-centrism, transglobality, hybridization and multiculturalism, and explores it as a new area of societal communication - one that takes effect in the sectors of a global society as a 'society of societies'.
The studies in this book converge to demonstrate that the route of Western modernization, its cultural program and iths institutional structure, does not follow the pathway of modernization that we have that far observed in the emerged new area. Rather, the continuation of the multiple modernities research program is given a new design, researching the social structure and dynamic of postmodern societies, their exchange and the the debate about the flow of free resources.

Permanente Veränderung und konfliktreiche Dynamiken sind wesentliche Merkmale moderner Gegenwartsgesellschaften.

Unter dem Einfluss der direkten und indirekten Folgen sozialer Prozesse stellt sich die Frage nach der Möglichkeit einer ‚begrifflichen Klammer‘ für die Vielfalt gesellschaftlicher Phänomene erneut und vielleicht dringlicher als je zuvor.

Das Buch will vor diesem Hintergrund die Antwort auf die Frage nach dem veränderlichen Wesen von Gesellschaft in dreifacher Hinsicht aktualisieren.

Die vorliegende Einführung in die Gesellschaftstheorie macht anhand ausgewählter Theoretiker und Theoretikerinnen mit der Entwicklung der wesentlichen Grundbegriffe vertraut und verdeutlicht exemplarisch ihre Anwendung in konkreten gegenstandsbezogenen Analysen.

Zugleich ist dieser Versuch einer Debattenübersicht zur Gesellschaftstheorie aber auch ein Plädoyer für einen starken Gesellschaftsbegriff, der Widersprüche, Dynamiken und Spannungen aufnimmt, ohne das Ziel aufzugeben, zu einem besseren Verständnis des ‚Ganzen‘ zu gelangen.

Dieses Kapitel zielt auf Demokratie aus einer gesellschaftstheoretischen Perspektive. Im Fokus stehen - exemplarisch für frühe, entwickelte und späte Moderne - die Denker*innen Tocqueville, Arendt und Rancière. Dabei werden systematisierend Vergleichsebenen (bevorzugter Demokratietyp, Totalitarismusbegriff, normative Grundkategorie, Fortschrittsverständnis und Revolutionsbegriff) und verbindende Diagnosen (wie etwa explizit oder avant la lettre zur Postdemokratie) herausgearbeitet.

Αναμφίβολα, η έννοια του χρέους βρίσκεται στο επίκεντρο του πολιτικο-οικονομικού γίγνεσθαι τα τελευταία χρόνια. Καθώς βρισκόμαστε αντιμέτωποι με τις συνέπειες των πολιτικών του χρέους και της κρίσης που ξέσπασε το 2008, εγείρονται τα εξής ερωτήματα: Γιατί εγώ πληρώνω αυτό το χρέος; Που χρωστάω, τι χρωστάω και, στην τελική, τι έκανα και απέκτησα αυτό το χρέος; Ίσως, όσο πιο πολύ σκεφτόμαστε την προέλευση του χρέους, τόσο πιο παράλογο μας φαίνεται το γεγονός ότι πρέπει να πληρώσουμε. Τι είναι, λοιπόν, αυτό που δίνει στο χρέος μια τέτοια δυναμική; Προκειμένου να διεισδύσουμε σε βάθος στην έννοια του χρέους, οφείλουμε να στοχαστούμε στην εξής πρόταση: Σε κάθε περίπτωση, οφείλει κανείς να εξοφλεί τα χρέη του επειδή τα απέκτησε. Ο λόγος που αυτή η δήλωση είναι τόσο ισχυρή είναι ότι δεν είναι μια οικονομική αλλά μια ηθική δήλωση. Συνεπώς η ανάλυσή μου δεν θα αποτελέσει μια οικονομική ανάλυση, αλλά θα επικεντρωθεί στον κοινωνικοπολιτικό χαρακτήρα του χρέους. Στόχος είναι να προσδιοριστεί ο ρόλος που διαδραματίζει το χρέος στη διαμόρφωση τόσο της συγκρότησης του Κοινωνικού, όσο και στην υποκειμενική διαμόρφωση. Το βασικό επιχείρημα, το οποίο θα υποστηρίξω, θα αναδειχθεί σε δύο σκέλη: αρχικά, το χρέος θα τεθεί ως σύμπτωμα (με τη λακανική έννοια) του Κοινωνικού και ως θεμέλιο της πολιτικο-οικονομικής πραγματικότητας και της κοινωνικής συνάρθρωσης. Κατά δεύτερον, θα τεθεί ως θεμέλιο της διαμόρφωσης του υποκειμένου. Μεθοδολογικά θα εντάξω τις λακανικές κατηγορίες στη συζήτηση για το χρέος. Στο πρώτο μέρος θα τεθεί το πρόβλημα του χρέους στο πλαίσιο του νεοφιλελευθερισμού. Στο δεύτερο μέρος θα παρουσιαστεί το απαραίτητο θεωρητικό κομμάτι, στο οποίο θα αναλυθούν κάποιες βασικές έννοιες της λακανικής ψυχανάλυσης. Το τρίτο και το τέταρτο μέρος θα αποτελέσει το κύριο μέρος της εργασίας, όπου θα συνδυαστούν οι λακανικές έννοιες με την έννοια του χρέους σε αντικειμενικό (κοινωνικοπολιτικό) και υποκειμενικό επίπεδο. Το χρέος θα τεθεί στη βάση της διαμόρφωσης της σύγχρονης κοινωνίας και του υποκειμένου μέσα σε αυτή. Βασική υπόθεση και παράλληλα σκοπός της ανάλυσης αυτής είναι ότι οι λακανικές έννοιες μπορούν να καταστούν εποικοδομητικές και αναζωογονητικές σε μια κριτική προσέγγιση των ιδεολογικών δομών του χρέους. Πιθανόν να φωτίσουν ορισμένες ανεξερεύνητες πλευρές του χρέους και του χρεωμένου ανθρώπου.

Wir befinden uns am Anfang eines gesellschaftlichen Prozesses, der alltagsprachlich als zunehmende Verschränkung von analoger und digitaler Welt beschrieben wird. Die Stichworte sind das intelligente Heim oder das automatisch gesteuerte Automobil usw. Im intelligenten Straßenverkehr geben wir nur noch das Ziel ein und das Auto fährt automatisch gesteuert dort hin. Dies lässt sich noch vereinfachen, indem die Vernetzung weiter getrieben wird. Ich würde dann nur den Namen einer Freundin oder einer Institution eingeben, durch Vernetzung mit einer Online-Datenbank wird die Adresse herausgesucht, in das Steuerungssystem des Autos eingespeist und ich werde auf dem schnellsten Weg dorthin gebracht. Alle diese Prozesse werden gespeichert und können mir zugordnet werden. Diese Daten bilden meine Netzexistenz oder Nexistenz.
Neben allen Bequemlichkeiten ist die digitale Welt dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass eine Unmenge an mathematisch verarbeitbaren Daten entsteht, die in automatisierter Weise gesammelt und ausgewertet werden können. Dieses Wissen steht denjenigen zur Verfügung, die es sich technisch zugänglich machen können. Im Netz sammelt jeder, der es technisch kann, über jeden, der das technisch nicht verhindert, so viele Daten, wie es ihm technisch möglich ist. Diejenigen, die wissen können, „wissen alles“ (Hofstetter 2014). Dass hierin etwas qualitativ Neues liegt, wird deutlich, wenn man die Aufmerksamkeit darauf lenkt, in welchem Ausmaß die technologischen Möglichkeiten der Vernetzung des gesamten Lebens in die digitale Welt gesteigert werden. Der damit einhergehende Umbruch ist wahrscheinlich nur mit der Erfindung des motorisierten Individualverkehrs vergleichbar. Das von einem Menschen gesteuerte Auto war/ist das Symbol individueller Freiheit, die sich erfolgreich sozialen Kontrollen entziehen kann. Jeder konnte sich als automobiles Individuum von Ort zu Ort bewegen und die räumlichen Grenzen seiner sozialen Herkunft verlassen.
Mit der Durchsetzung der Netztechnologie wird die Ära dieser individuellen Freiheit zu Ende gehen. Denn wir treten ein in die Ära der „Totalöffentlichkeit in der Matrix der digitalen Raumzeit“, deren Selbstverständlichkeit auf der Verschränkung von Leib und Nexistenz beruht.

Which traces has Henri Bergson left in French sociological thought? Which are the effects of this author in social theory as well as in social analysis, who’s importance for the French thought in general in the 20th and also in the 21th century can hardly be overstated?

The – often implicit, but sometimes also purposely covered – effects of Bergson in French sociological thought are uncovered alongside two different traces: On the one hand, in the aversions against the (initially badly understood) Bergsonian thought. These aversions have been constitutive as within them the French or Durkheimian sociology has unfolded itself and this in both thematic and methodological respects. On the other hand, the book follows the attractions by and the productive takeovers of the ('right understood') Bergsonian thought within sociological concepts: in the works of Gilles Deleuze, Cornelius Castoriadis, Gilbert Simondon, Georges Canguilhem, André Leroi-Gourhan, but also in Claude Lévi-Strauss, Maurice Hauriou or Eugène Dupréel. This operation reveals the work of Henri Bergson as not only of philosophical, but also of sociological relevance - offering innovative concepts of ‚the social‘ and of societal life.

This book opens a hitherto unwritten chapter in the history of sociological thought – while in the same time opening a new register within the plurality of sociological theories. In its way through the Bergsonian works (of Bergson and other authors) it unfolds a singular paradigm: sociology of life or life sociology. This sociological paradigm connects a singular theory of difference (as differentiation or permanent becoming-another) with a singular perspective of immanence (in which bodies, artefacts, materiality, affects and discourses, imaginations and symbols are conceptualized both in their mutual relations as well as their own dynamics). A New Vitalism in sociological thought becomes visible, for which life is both the subject and the object of thinking - and of the social.

Welche Spuren hat Henri Bergson im französischen soziologischen Denken hinterlassen, was sind die sozial- und gesellschaftstheoretischen Effekte jenes Autors, dessen Bedeutung für das französi-sche Denken generell kaum zu überschätzen ist?

Die – oft impliziten, zuweilen auch absichtlich verdeckten – Bergson-Effekte im französischen soziologischen Denken werden entlang zweier konträrer Spuren aufgedeckt: Einerseits in den Aver-sionen gegen das (zunächst schlecht verstandene) bergsonsche Denken. Diese Aversionen waren konstitutiv, in ihnen hat sich thematisch und methodologisch die Bildung der französischen Sozio-logie ereignet. Andererseits werden die Attraktionen, die produktiven Übernahmen von Bergsons Denken in soziologischen Konzepten verfolgt, bei Autoren wie Gilles Deleuze, Cornelius Castoria-dis, Gilbert Simondon oder Georges Canguilhem. Dabei erweist sich auch Bergsons Werk selbst als eines, das nicht nur philosophisch, sondern auch soziologisch neue Denkweisen bietet. 

Dieses Buch öffnet ein bislang ungeschriebenes Kapitel der Soziologiegeschichte – und ein neues Register soziologischer Theorie. Es entfaltet im Durchgang durch die bergsonianischen Werke ein diskretes Paradigma: eine lebenssoziologische Denkweise. Diese verbindet eine singuläre Theorie der Differenz (als Differentiation, permanentes Anders-Werden) mit einer singulären Perspektive der Immanenz (Körper, Artefakte, Materialität, Affekte und Diskurse, Imaginäres und Symbolisches in ihren Verschränkungen und Eigenlogiken denkend). Sichtbar wird ein Neuer Vitalismus, der das Leben als Subjekt und Objekt des Denkens anerkennt. Wie Bergson sagte, liegt ‚auf dem Grund des Sozialen‘ das Vitale; und daher ist es ‚stets der Aufenthalt, der eine soziologische Erklärung verlangt, und nicht die Bewegung‘.

Diplomatische Praktiken findet man sowohl in der modernen Weltgesellschaft als auch in Stammes- und Adelsgesellschaften. Dieses Buch untersucht und vergleicht sie erstmals systematisch aus soziologischer Perspektive. Im Mittelpunkt steht dabei die These, dass die Hauptbedingung jeder Diplomatie in der Anerkennung von Grenzen liegt. Darüber hinaus werden auch unkonventionelle Fragen beantwortet: Wie verhandelt man etwa mit rituellen Artefakten oder mit diplomatischen Hochstaplern? Kann Unhöflichkeit diplomatische Autonomie steigern? Und wie ermöglicht Spionage vertrauensvolle Diplomatie?

Haldûn ve ilmi çabasına dair gerçekleşen okumaların büyük kısmı modern anlamda sosyal bilimlerin doğuşu ile alakadardır. Tarih, tarih felsefesi, sosyoloji gibi bilim dallarının müjdecisi bazen de doğuşu olarak imlenen Mukaddime’nin Franz Rosenthal tarafından yapılan tercümesi modern dönem okumalarda problematiğe dair düzeltici bir yorumlama getirme mecburiyeti içerisinde dâhil olmuştur. Rosenthal’in düzeltici tutumu defaten Haldûn’un gerek modern sosyal bilimler gerek de döneminin İslami ilimleriyle olan irtibatındaki epistemik çerçevenin kaynakları açısından irdelemelere konu olacak mahiyettedir. Haldûn’un epistemik çerçevesinin kaynakları açısından sosyal bilimlerle irtibatını konu edinmekten geri durarak, Mukaddime’deki toplum teorisini ağırlıklı olarak materyal belirlenim içerisinde konumlamaktadır. Rosenthal’in getirdiği yorum, Mukaddime’nin kapsamlı muhtevası bakımından değerlendirme ölçütlerinin ihlaline dair başka bir tartışmaya yol açabilmektedir. Mukaddime’deki toplum teorisinin evrensel nitelikleri başka bir deyişle toplumu konu edinen bir bilim alanı oluşturmayı ve sosyal vakıaları çok boyutlu bir şekilde tahlil ederek küllî kaidelere açığa çıkarması, toplum teorisinin kendi iç bünyesinde insan ve Tanrı merkezli toplum yapısına dair olgunlaştırmanın yollarını tartışmaya aldığı ölçüde umran ilminin neticesi ve maksadı anlam kazanmaktadır.

This article takes the failure to grasp fully the paradigmatic case of European security after the Cold War as an example of how International Relations (IR) would benefit from reformulating not only its empirical research questions but also several of its central conceptual building blocks with the aid of Bourdieusian sociology. The separation between theory and practice and the overemphasis on military power and state actors blind IR from seeing the power struggles that reshaped European security. Instead, a Bourdieusian reformulation adds new types of agency, focuses on the social production of forms of power, and stresses the processual rather than the substantive character of social reality.

Die sozialtheoretischen Diskussionen der letzten Jahrzehnte haben zu neuartigen Anforderungen an eine allgemeine Sozialtheorie geführt.
Wie muss eine allgemeine Theorie des Sozialen aussehen,
• die den Kreis legitimer Akteure als historisch variabel, d.h. als kontingent, begreift, statt ihn selbstverständlicherweise auf den Kreis lebendiger Menschen zu beschränken?
• die die Natur-Kultur-Unterscheidung nicht als gegeben voraussetzt, sondern als eine mögliche Ordnung des Zugangs zur Welt begreift?
• die Ordnung nicht nur als eine Ordnung des Sozialen analysiert, sondern auch Materialität und die Dimensionen von Raum und Zeit einbezieht?
• die Gewalt als ordnungsbildende Kraft begreifen kann?
• die eine Perspektive für die Formulierung einer Gesellschaftstheorie erschließt?
Mit Blick auf die allgemeine Theoriedebatte werden in diesem Buch drei Diskus-sionstränge zusammengeführt: Zum einen das Konglomerat an Debatten um die Notwendigkeit theoretischer Neuorientierungen (»turns« oder »Wenden« wie z.B. linguistic turn, material turn, body turn, pictorial turn oder spatial turn); zum anderen die Problematisierung der Grenzen der Sozialwelt bzw. des Akteursstatus nichtmenschlicher Entitäten; drittens die immer wieder aufflackernden Auseinandersetzungen um die Bedeutung von Gewalt für die Gestaltung sozialer Prozesse.
Die Theorie der Weltzugänge führt diese Aspekte zu einer Theorie mehrdimensionaler Ordnungsbildung zusammen und entwickelt dabei zugleich eine Perspektive für die Ausarbeitung einer Gesellschaftstheorie. Dieser Schritt ist theoriearchitektonisch notwendig, denn dadurch lassen sich die Sozialtheorie und damit auch die durch sie angeleiteten Forschungen reflexiv historisch situieren – dies ist die Voraussetzung für eine rationale Theoriekonstruktion.

Περίληψη:
Στην παρούσα εργασία εξετάζονται οι κοινωνικές αντιθέσεις που προκύπτουν μεταξύ παραγωγικών δυνάμεων και παραγωγικών σχέσεων στον καπιταλιστικό οικονομικό σχηματισμό των αστικών κοινωνιών, και οι οποίες δύνανται να οδηγήσουν στην αξιογένεση της αλληλεγγύης. Στη βάση της διαλεκτικής υλιστικής μεθόδου μελετώνται ενότητες του Κεφαλαίου που αφορούν την παραγωγή απόλυτης και σχετικής υπεραξίας, τα είδη συνεργασίας στον κεφαλαιοκρατικό τρόπο παραγωγής, την ιστορική τάση και τους νόμους της κεφαλαιοκρατικής συσσώρευσης. Αντιστοίχως τα συμπεράσματα στα οποία καταλήγει η εργασία είναι τα εξής: αφενός στην ύπαρξη ενός πλεονάσματος παραγόμενου από τη συνολική κοινωνική εργασία εξαιτίας του μηχανισμού παραγωγής υπεραξίας, επί του οποίου εγείρεται το αίτημα για μετατροπή του από ατομική σε κοινωνική ιδιοκτησία στη λογική της αλληλέγγυας οργάνωσης της συλλογικής ζωής. Αφετέρου στην ανάδυση μορφών αλληλεγγύης κανονιστικού τύπου-εξαναγκασμένες μορφές-κατά τη διαδικασία διαμεσολάβησης άναρχων οικονομικών διαδικασιών από έλλογες πολιτικές θεσμοποιήσεις. Τέτοιες είναι: η ρύθμιση της εργάσιμης μέρας, η καθιέρωση υγειονομικών και εκπαιδευτικών ρητρών στην εργοστασιακή νομοθεσία από το κρατικοδικαιικό στοιχείο ως εγγύηση για τη διατήρηση των βιοτικών όρων της ζωής. Επιπλέον, καταλήγει στη συνεργασία στην καπιταλιστική παραγωγή ως ιδιαίτερη δύναμη αύξησης τη παραγωγικότητας της εργασίας, που συγκροτεί τη συνολική, κοινωνική παραγωγική δύναμη που μπορεί να οδηγήσει τα Υποκείμενα της εργασίας-έμψυχο στοιχείο της εργασιακής διαδικασίας-σε κοινωνικοποίηση των μέσων παραγωγής. Αυτό επιτυγχάνεται με τη συλλογική οργάνωσή τους-συνδικαλιστική και πολιτική-και την αλληλέγγυα δράση τους. Επιπρόσθετα, στις δυνατότητες του καταμερισμού της εργασίας έτσι όπως προκύπτει ως συνέπεια της συνεργασίας: αύξηση της παραγωγικότητας, συντόμευση της εργάσιμης μέρας, αύξηση του ελεύθερου χρόνου για προσωπική ανάπτυξη κα εξυπηρέτηση κοινωνικών αναγκών. Τέλος, η εργασία περιγράφει τους ιστορικούς νόμους της κεφαλαιοκρατικής συσσώρευσης  σύμφωνα με τους οποίους: το κεφάλαιο προοδευτικά συγκεντροποιείται και μετασχηματίζεται σε μονοπωλιακό,  συσσωρεύεται χωρίς να μπορεί να αξιοποιηθεί, μεταβάλλεται δομικά με το σταθερό του μέρος να αυξάνεται εις βάρος του μεταβλητού,  έλκει και απωθεί ακανόνιστα εργατικό δυναμικό ρυθμίζοντας τον νόμο της προσφοράς-ζήτησης προς όφελός του. Ταυτόχρονα όμως με την αναπαραγωγή του, το κεφάλαιο αναπαράγει και τις αντιφάσεις του, εννοούμενες ως ανάδυση κοινωνικών σκοπών που υπερβαίνουν την καπιταλιστική αναπαραγωγή που τους γεννά: τέτοιου είδους αντίφαση αποτελεί και η δημιουργία του εφεδρικού εργοστασιακού στρατού ο οποίος,  με συνείδηση της ταξικής του θέσης, αν συμπράξει αλληλέγγυα με τον ενεργό θα απορρυθμίσει τον ιερό νόμο της προσφοράς και ζήτησης με απώτερο σκοπό τη ρύθμιση της παραγωγικής διαδικασίας προς συμφέρον του συνόλου του κόσμου της εργασίας.

Abstract:

The present dissertation examines social oppositions due to the contradiction between productive forces and productive relationships of capitalistic economic formation in the civil society. The aforementioned oppositions may lead to the birth of the value of solidarity. The dissertation, based on the dialectical materialism, displays those sections of Marxian Capital which deal with the production of supervalue, absolute and relative, the different kinds of cooperation in capitalistic productive procedure, the historic inclination and the laws of capitalistic accumulation. Accordingly, the dissertation comes to following conclusions: on the one hand there is a surplus, outcome of total social work thanks to the produced supervalue. On this surplus rises a demand: to be transformed from individual to social property after a solidary organization of social life. On the other hand, many forms of regulative solidarity emerge, during the procedure of political intervention in order to smooth ungoverned economic procedures. Therefore, we have a number of rational institutional changes that have to do with the regulation of the working day, state laws for elementary health care and the education of industrial workers. In this occasion the state rises as the guarantor of social interest. Furthermore, the dissertation studies how cooperation in the capitalistic production is developing as a social massive force that enhances productivity and may lead the subjects of work (the workers themselves) to the socialization of  the productive means. This can be achieved by the common political and unionist solidary organization and action, which intensifies the productivity, shortens the duration of working day, increases free time for personal development and support of social demands. Finally, the dissertation describes the laws of capitalistic accumulation and how these affect the destiny of the working class. According to these laws, the capital is gradually concentrated and modified to a monopolistic form. It is also accumulated while it is deprived of the capability to reinvest itself;  it sustains structural changes-a fact that means increase in the stable capital at the expense of the changing capital-and attracts and repels irregularly working forces. This way, the capital regulates the “sacred” law of “supply and demand” in its own interest. However, while the capital reproduces itself, it also reproduces also its inconsistencies. These are all those social goals which arise unconsciously and are not planned during the capitalistic production. A kind of such an inconsistency is the existence of unemployed industrial workers which, once realizing their social position and acting together with the active working class,  will achieve to disorganize the law of “supply and demand”  in the interest of the entire working world.

Rad se bavi postavkama ideje javnog uma u filozofskoj tradiciji, i istoriji razmatrajući istorijski razvoj ovog pojma, i pokušava da ga pozicionira u odnosu na korelativan pojam privatnog uma, razmatrajući u modernom značenju građanski pojam javnosti koji analizira Habermas. Ideja javnog uma u radu je razmatrana na najvažnijim tačkama razvoja filozofske misli, kroz spektar problema koji se presecaju u ovoj tački. Rad predstavlja pokušaj da se kroz analizu različitih fenomena dođe do razumevanja strukture javnog uma. Ispitivanje pojavnih oblika onoga što je nazvano ovde krizom je možda dublje ekspliciranje teškoće da se unutar postojećih koncepata misle odredjene ideje. Postavke ideje javnog uma ( unutar dihotomije javno- privatno) ukazuju na izvesne protivečnosti i probleme na koje ova ideja nailazi. Papir nije kompletan rad. Sadrži jedan deo mog diplomskog rada odbranjenog decembra 2010.

For the sociology of the present society, the problem arises that the traditional partial system-typical descriptions of modern society survived, for example, as an economic society, a knowledge society and a state-centered society. We can now see that.

The sociology of the next society should help to take into consideration its changed basic situation of the self-description of social communication and its social structure. It should not evade the realization that social communication cannot be perfected. In this respect, we are beyond the cultural programmes of modernity and its paradoxes. This situation is to be classified as a new "saddle time" (Koselleck). We do not know their evolutionary consequences, since there is no Laplace demon from which we could observe evolution and, in retrospect and looking ahead, calculate and determine in its past states and future events.

Globalization research is now broadly based. The sociology of membership is a new research programme which, in comparison with the present approaches, integrates insights into the existing research and the research group of the Research Programm of Multiple Modernities since the 1990s.

Deindustrialization is a major burden on workers’ health in many countries, calling for theoretically informed sociological analysis. Here, we present a novel neoclassical sociological synthesis of the lived experience of deindustrialization. We conceptualize industry as a social institution whose disintegration has widespread implications for the social fabric. Combining Durkheimian and Marxian categories, we show that deindustrialization generates ruptures in economic production, which entail job and income loss, increased exploitation, social inequality, and the disruption of services. These ruptures spill over to the field of social reproduction, generating material deprivation, job strain, fatalism, increased domestic workload, anomie, community disintegration, and alienation. Gesa Lindemann zeichnet im vorliegenden ersten Band ihrer Theorie der modernen Gesellschaft die historische Entstehung des menschlichen Körperindividuums und seine Institutionalisierung in den Menschenrechten nach, analysiert die Strukturmerkmale der horizontalen Differenzierung und rückt schließlich die allgemeine Legitimationstheorie des Ethos der Menschenrechte sowie die dadurch ermöglichte und strukturell notwendige Kritik in den Vordergrund.

Für die Autorin sind drei Aspekte von besonderer Bedeutung. Erstens: Die moderne Gesellschaft zeichnet sich durch eine moralisch aufgeladene Grenzziehung zwischen Personen und anderen Wesen aus. Zweitens: Eine Analyse der modernen Vergesellschaftung muss die konstitutive Bedeutung von Gewalt für soziale Ordnungsbildung einbeziehen. Current sociology of knowledge tends to take for granted Robert K. Merton’s theory of cumulative advantage: successful ideas bring recognition to their authors, successful authors have their ideas recognized more easily than unknown ones. This article argues that this theory should be revised via the introduction of the differential between the status of an idea and that of its creator: when an idea is more important than its creator, the latter becomes identified with the former, and this will hinder recognition of the intellectual’s new ideas as they differ from old ones in their content or style. Robert N. Bellah’s performance during the “civil religion debate” of the 1970s is reconstructed as an example of how this mechanism may work. Implications for further research are considered in the concluding section.
