Web Based System

The expanding role of the Web as a content and applications deployment platform and the appearance of new computing paradigms, such as thin-client computing, require now more than ever the introduction of concrete development frameworks. Although new approaches, technologies, tools, commercial applications appear daily, limited guidelines or frameworks exist that can assist Web developers in selecting the proper methodology and tools for the design, implementation and maintenance of flexible Web content and applications. Our work, triggered from our experience in implementing the Web presence of several large Greek Governmental organisations, attempts to address the major current and forthcoming problems that Web developers face. We propose a framework (RDF/XML based) that will act as a malleable development support environment, incorporating specific guidelines, which Web developers should always consider. The primary goals are achieving scalability (modular, component-based architecture), re-usability and technology independency in Web development. We focus on hypermedia content and applications.

Learning style models constitute a valuable tool for improving individual learning by the use of adaptation techniques based on them. In this paper, we present how the benefit of considering learning styles with adaptation purposes, as part of the user model, can be extended to the context of collaborative learning as a key feature for group formation. We explore the effects that the combination of students with different learning styles in specific groups may have in the final results of the tasks accomplished by them collaboratively. With this aim, a case study with 166 students of computer science has been carried out, from which conclusions are drawn. We also describe how an existing web-based system can take advantage of learning style information in order to form more productive groups. Our ongoing work concerning the automatic extraction of grouping rules starting from data about previous interactions within the system is also outlined. Finally, we present our challenges, related to the continuous improvement of collaboration by the use and dynamic modification of automatic grouping rules.

This study investigated students’ motivation and perceptions of learning in relation to the use of a web-based homework tool in one College Algebra course. While several studies have been conducted examining web-based homework, few have moved beyond the examination of “equivalency” of the methods. A quantitative research design, specifically a survey design, was employed. Research questions examined (1) if student backgrounds or prior experiences impacted their perceptions of the use of web-based homework tool affecting their learning, and (2) if the web-based homework tool influenced students’ learning strategies or motivation to complete their homework. The results suggest that students were motivated to complete more homework using the web-based tool than with traditional paper-based methods. Zydeco is a mobile and web based system that allows students to collect and annotate multi-modal data. With the support of Zydeco, students are expected to connect their learning experiences across different learning settings. In this case study, we shadowed four 7th grade students with different achievement levels from a science class and observed how they utilized Zydeco in a science center. We analyzed their data collected with Zydeco and their final project posters to explain how students connect learning experiences in nomadic inquiry.

SUMMARY This paper discusses the architecture of an Advanced Traveler’s Information System (ATIS), which uses the internet to disseminate real-time travel related information. The different parts of the system are integrated through the use of GIS (Geographic Information Systems) technologies. As the workforce in state-funded pre-kindergarten programs continues to grow in the United States, the promise of these and other early education opportunities (e.g., Head Start) depends in large part on in-service professional development and training in key instructional and interaction skills. In this paper, we describe effects of MyTeachingPartner (MTP), a web-based system of professional development resources, that include video exemplars and web-mediated consultation on specific dimensions of interactions with children for 113 teachers in a state-funded pre-k program. Teachers assigned to receive on-line consultation and feedback targeted to their interactions showed significantly greater increases in independent ratings of the quality of interactions than did those only receiving access to a website with video clips.
