The COLIS (Collaborative Online Learning and Information Systems) project is a DEST funded initiative based on a consortium of five Australian universities (Macquarie, Newcastle, Tasmania, UNE, and USQ) and five e-learning vendors (Computer Associates, Fretwell Downing, IPR Systems, WebCT and WebMCQ) seeking to build a broad, interoperable, standards-based e-learning environment for the future. Part of the first phase of COLIS was the creation of a "Demonstrator " or "testbed " environment to investigate and demonstrate strategies for the incremental development of levels of technical interoperability in learning space application integration. This technical report describes the operation of BGP replay tool v0.2 (BRT v02), a tool to replay past BGP updates with time stamps. Compared to other BGP replay and inject tools, BRT v0.2 does not require kernel modification at the host's OS, supports different BGP attributes, supports sending IPv6 BGP updates and peering over IPv6. The evaluation of this tool has been done using real Cisco routers, Quagga and Virtual Internet Routing Lab (VIRL) as controlled testbeds.

In a multi-service network, different applications have varying QoS requirements. The IETF has proposed the DiffServ architecture as a scalable solution to provide Quality of Service (QoS) in IP Networks. In order to provide quantitative guarantees and optimization of transmission resources, DiffServ mechanisms should be complemented with efficient traffic engineering (TE) mechanisms, which operate on an aggregate basis across all classes of service. The MultiProtocol Label Switching (MPLS) technology is a suitable method to provide TE, independent of the underlying layer2 technology. Currently, the combined use of Differentiated Services (DiffServ) and MPLS is a promising technique to provide Quality of Service (QoS), while efficiently exploiting network resources. This paper looks at issues involved in providing quality-of-service (QoS) support in a dynamic environment. We focus on a resource reservation-based approach, which we believe is attractive for military applications but is especially difficult in a dynamic network environment. This is because resources reserved for a particular flow may contract after they have been “committed” to the flow, causing the reservation to be dropped. Our approach is to expand the semantics of the reservation so that instead of being a single value indicating the level of service needed by an application, it becomes a range of service levels in which the application can operate, together with the current reserved value within that range. This provides flexibility so that reservations can be maintained as network conditions change. The paper describes the Testbed for Advanced Transport Protocols and Architecture (TATPA) developed by the University of Bologna, inside the SatNEx (Satellite Network of Excellence) framework. The aim is to provide partners, and in general the scientific community, with a powerful and flexible emulation tool to evaluate new proposal at transport layer (both protocols and architectures). In accordance with our research interests, the testbed is focused on performance evaluation on heterogeneous networks that include satellite links. The testbed architecture is based on a cluster of Linux PCs and, in addition to some widely adopted networking tools (NistNet, Ipcrf), it also exploits software packages specifically developed by the authors (Multi TCP, PEPsal, released under GNU license). The testbed is controlled by remote through a web interface, which provides both users and administrators with a ubiquitous easy access to the testbed features. A dedicated PC, acting as testbed controller, hosts the web server and the control engine, developed in PHP and bash and based on a MySQL database. In the paper, a particular attention is devoted to the description of the innovative design and the many advanced features of this controller. An example of use, seen from the final user point of view, completes the description of the TATPA testbed.

ABSTRACT A set of wireless mobile terminals, which cooperate by routing packets to each other create a Mobile Adhoc Network (MANET). MANETs are attracting attention for their potential use in several fields such as collaborative computing and disaster recovery environments. Considering mobility of the terminals, the routes change more dynamically and routing becomes a key process for operation of MANETs. In this paper, we analyze the performance of Better Approach to MANET (BATMAN) routing protocol in an outdoor bridge environment considering mobility and vertical communication. We implement two scenarios on untested and evaluate the communication in terms of bitrate and packetloss.

ABSTRACT Evaluation of Content-Centric Networking (CCN) transport protocols, especially over wireless networks, brings about new requirements for testbeds. Typical CCN transport features such as hop-by-hop transfer, caching support, and receiver-driven traffic and congestion control differ significantly from those of classical transport protocols, most notably TCP. In this paper, we highlight an implementation of a transport protocol designed specifically for CCN and demonstrating its over-the-air, real time operation using ORBIT - an open access platform maintained by WINLAB, Rutgers University, USA.

In environmental monitoring, wirelessly connected sensors form local networks and collect data, which are sent to a central repository for further analysis and permanent stor- age. In this paper we empirically evaluate the use of xed WiMAX to backhaul data from an environmental monitor- ing application. We nd that aggregating sensor readings is crucial for taking full advantage of the WiMAX back- haul. We consider application-layer aggregation for scenar- ios where sensor communication is programmable or at least congurable. For scenarios where sensors cannot be modi- ed, we consider network-layer aggregation using a perfor- mance enhancing proxy. Finally, we consider the case where application- and network-layer aggregation are combined.
