    United Airlines chief executive Scott Kirby last week dropped the guard airline bosses have maintained over the past two years, talking down their sky-high profits and emphasising efforts to make flying less terrible for customers.

    Asked how difficult 2024 has been so far, he replied: “I wouldn’t describe it as a tough year at all.”
