Evelyn Brent's life and career were going quite well in 1928. She was happily living with writer Dorothy Herzog following her divorce from producer Bernard Fineman, and the tiny brunette had wowed fans and critics in the silent films The Underworld and The Last Command. She'd also been a sensation in Paramount's first dialogue film, Interference. But by the end of that year Brent was headed for a quick, downward spiral ending in bankruptcy and occasional work as an extra. What happened is a complicated story laced with bad luck, poor decisions, and treachery detailed in this first and only full-length biography.

Thorough biography of actress Evelyn Brent - who was a big star in the late silent and early sound era but ended up fading away into oblivion. The author did a great deal of research into her life which shows in the biography portion of the book. The filmography portion is the mos detailed of any filmography I have ever seen, letting us know if the film is lost or if not, in what archives it exists, information on director/writers/cast, a plot summary, reviews, and a brief synopsis of some of the major players in the film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating exploration of the life of enigmatic Hollywood star

Evelyn Brent by Lynn Kear is a fascinating read. Brent starred in many films, both silent and early talkies. Her time at the top however, was fleeting. She starred in two silent films directed by the legendary Josef Von Sternberg (The Last Command and Underworld) and starred in Paramount's first all-speaking film, Interference- but within a few short years, her career was in decline and she was faced with seemingly insurmountable financial difficulties. Brent's story is, as it were, the antithesis of those almost mythological stories of fame; of a star shining brightly to be extinguished in an instant- taken far too soon. Brent endured, but her's was a slow decline, exacerbated by unwise business decisions and associations and bad luck. Kear charts this journey, and it's not always pleasant, and sometimes frustrating- but it's always intriguing. The book is divided in two parts- a full biography as well as a film by film guide of Brent's career. An essential reference tool for anyone wanting to delve deeper and learn more about this sadly forgotten and under-rated Hollywood actor.
