Just heard from tech support. I was advised that the engineers worked on the app and now the Alexa App does not have to be open for the device to connect. Well, I checked it out and sure enough, the app was upgraded and now the app does not have to be open. Kudos to Amazon for listening to their customers. I am giving this device 5 stars because it works perfectly in every aspect. Thank you Amazon.
After many attempts and working with tech support, it turns out that the Alexa App must be open for the device to connect to your phone. What a let down. The tech support suggested that before I get into my car I should open the app. Who wants a device like that. Now I'm sure the engineers that designed this probably do not use it. If they did, they will fix this ridiculous function. Once it connects, it works great. Oh by the way, if you forget to open the app and you drive away and then realize you didn't open the app, you will not be able to open it without answering the question, are you a passenger.....what were they thinking. Hopefully someone in the tech department will read this and pass it on to the engineers that designed this. I am now using an If This Than That App which will automatically turn the Alexa App on when the bluetooth automatically connects to my car head unit and turn it off when I leave the car. It works perfectly. Don't know why they didn't think of this. Once you get around this, I think you will really like the device. Navigation is perfect, phone calls are perfect, Text messaging does work with whatever messaging app you use, however it also adds your voice to the message so your recipient can not only read your message, but can also hear you speak it. The music options are perfect ei: pandora, sirius xm radio, spotify, whatever you use on your phone. You can also give commands like your home alexa devices, ei: turn on lights, open the garage door, etc. If they fix the automatic connection, this device deserves 5 stars.

Bring Alexa and All of Its Hands. Free Features to Your Vehicle....No Wifi Needed
I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical about this device at first. My major concern was that I needed wifi or an additional service for it to work. That was not the case however, I did not need to anything other then my phone. It connects through my phone using my already existing cellular service. It mounts to your vehicle with a magnetic mount that makes it easy to transfer the device between vehicles with additional mounts in them. The mount sticks very well to my vehicle using the included double sided tape and the magnet holds the device very securely. It has not yet slipped or fell since I installed it. Connecting device is very easy though the Alexa app on your phone. It actually walks you through the set up, step by step.So fr (knock on wood), I have not had any connectivity issues. The device fires right up as soon as I turn my vehicle on. It is an extension of my home Alexa devices and works in the same manner and does the same things, bit through my phone. It is hands free and I do not need to have my phone open to use it. You will find a mute button on the device that stops it from actively listening to you.As for sound quality, it has ore do do with the sound system in your car then with the device itself. The device does not have a problem hearing or understanding my voice, even when I am driving with my window down. When I am listening to Amazon Music through it, get out of my car, return and start my car back up, Amazon Music will pick up where it left off but sometimes the song breaks up and I end up having to stop the song and ask Alexa to either play that song again or play a new one. This is minor to me.As I mentioned, I can do everything you can do with your standard Echo devices that you can do with this, minus video calls. I can make hand free calls, ask. questions, listen to Amazon Music, get sports scores, hear news by using the standard Alexa voice commands. I really like this device. My only other issue, which is minor as well, is that it takes up one of your vehicles USB ports, which may be a problem with a vehicle with just one or even two.Anyway,, I am glad that I purchased this device and I highly recommend it.

I have a 2012 Expedition and the entertainment system is way outdated. Rather than swap the head unit out, I wanted to give this a try. This little device has made me very happy. I now get to enjoy a large slice of functionality (minus the screens most new cars have), for the fraction of the price of putting in a stereo system. It has instant response and works great. I highly recommend for those who have an old "line in" system.
