Alcamo's Microbiology textbook really surprised me by how clear, simple, and understandable the material is. The way the material is presented is very straight-forward and doesn't overwhelm the reader at all. The diagrams are very organized and I love the "Key Concept" and the "Concept and Reasoning Checks" at the beginning and end of every section. They help me focus on the most important information. I also found the Pronunciation Key at the beginning of the book helpful. I am convinced that the quality of Alcamo's Fundamentals of Microbiology helped me get a 95% on my first exam.

If I pick up one device and read the second will automatically ask what place I want to resume from the cell phone or the tablet. Amazing for reference because you can search and it will pull up anything to do with what you have requested. (ie. Search penicillin-it will locate every excerpt that has that word in it) I definitely recommend; my only wish is that there were more text books offered.

New editions are very expensive but back up a couple revisions and it becomes affordable. A person can find answers here that a Doctor just hasn't time to explain. You also can learn more about what is going on and ask better questions.

Typically, I wouldn't review a textbook, but I actually enjoyed reading this one! Due to the nature of my class, I ended up actually reading a great deal of this book and doing the end of chapter questions. I thought this book did a pretty good job of making the material interesting and not too dry and clinical like other science books. There were frequent sections in the chapters that gave kind of "real world" examples relating the material to practical applications, historical examples (I'm looking at you, Typhoid Mary!), and other interesting microbiological encounters and applications. I found the images included in the text not only educational, but also helped to further my understanding while also adding interest to the information presented.

I used the digital version of the text using the kindle version on my Ipad. The reason I am giving this 4 stars instead of 5 is primarily due to the unusual formatting that sometimes made the text difficult to utilize for me. The text would often move around from page to page when going back and forth between pages (spatially, not chronologically). Although this seems to be a problem in many digital textbooks, in this book the problem was particularly apparent and could make quickly traveling through pages in a chapter arduous. Sometimes large images (like tables) would be cut-off or too small to read, and although a majority of them could be enlarged to be readable, some of them didn't have this functionality. Other images that seemed like they ought to be able to be enlarged similarly could not be, or would result in an extremely pixelated low resolution picture.

Overall, I thought this was a pretty good book as far as educational texts go. It was well organized (easy to outline!), provided complex information in a concise but easy to understand way, and included plenty of factual, but interesting examples to help me connect with the information.
