Scott Gottlieb is in a unique position to write a book that covers a broad spectrum of the mistakes that were made, early on in the pandemic. As a physician, former director of the FDA, and currently sitting on the Board of Directors for Pfizer, he has the ability to provide a broad perspective on a number of complex and critical issues related to our pandemic response. As previously mentioned in other reviews, he takes great care to avoid "blaming" Trump, or any of the other top officials such as Alex Azar, Robert Redfield, Dr. Fauci, preferring to focus on systemic failures, especially CDC. Particularly impressive is his chapter on improving national security, and how national security and public health agencies need to merge together to avoid another disaster. In this same chapter is an excellent outline of the various theories related to the origins of the virus, and he provides a good roadmap for future policy officials to follow. The sad conclusion, however, is we never will truly know how SARS-CoV2 originated unless the Chinese government had some miraculous change of heart. Having some background in medicine and science clearly makes this book enjoyable, but the layman also can gain valuable insights that will help to clarify some of the mis and dis information commonly seen on social media.
