The importance of Colonel Edward M. House in twentieth-century American foreign policy is enormous: from 1913 to 1919 he served not only as intimate friend and chief political adviser to President Woodrow Wilson but also as national security adviser and senior diplomat. Yet the relationship between House and the president ended in a quarrel at the Paris peace conference of 1919largely because of Mrs. Wilson’s hostility to Houseand House has received little sympathetic historical attention since. This extensively researched book reintroduces House and clearly establishes his contributions as one of the greatest American diplomats.
A kingmaker” in Texas politics, House joined Wilson’s campaign in 1912 and soon was traveling through Europe as the president’s secret agent. He visited Europe repeatedly during World War I and played a major part in drafting Wilson's Fourteen Points and the Covenant of the League of Nations. He tried to stop the war before it began, and to end it by negotiation after it had started. His greatest achievement was to lock both sides into an armistice based on American ideals.

As the largest state, surprisingly there are only two famous Texans: President Lyndon Johnson and Colonel Edward House. This book gives the latter his due. Well researched and written to engage, I recommend this to book to anyone interested in WWI.

Colonel House is usually a second violin to the musical drama of Woodrow Wilson,but this wonderfulbook brings out the drama and meaning of this most remarkable and influential man.The writing is clear, elegant and very fair to all concerned and offers and indispensable angle on things for gaining a fuller picture of the times and the people who tried to shape them ;idealistically;pragmatically or driven by forces beyond their control.

EXCELLENT story of the person who put Woodrow Wilson in the White House and guided his thoughts and policies throughout his administration. It is often what you don't see that counts. Such is the case of Edward House.

This book is a propaganda whitewash. it doesn't really paint a very clear picture of the political intrigues of the man, and those are the things most people should really understand. He was a tool for the central bankers in England, and he was used to accomplish a lot of very unsavory things in the U.S. Don't waste your money, unless you thrive on disinformation.
