How to study art WITH your kids

Yesterday I got to learn all about the music from Hello Dolly… alongside my kids.

It was so much fun!

I took two years of piano in high school, but I never studied music appreciation. My 11 year old son knows MUCH more about classic music and composers than I probably ever will.

Music is what he’s interested in. And, luckily for him (and me) there are plenty of amazing teachers out there sharing what they are passionate about. Whether it’s music, science, literature, or any other subject… there is someone out there teaching it in a fun way.

To me, this is one of the most spectacular benefits of homeschooling.

Not only do I get to have fun learning new things WITH them, but we get to learn from people who LOVE what they are teaching.

Art (and especially art appreciation) is what I’m passionate about. I LOVE exploring art with kids. They have such a fresh take on paintings and sculptures that have been around for decades or centuries, but are new to them. Kids interpret art in such fun ways – ways that historians and curators haven’t thought of all these years.

Way back when I started homeschooling my kids (they were 3 and 5 at the time), we had so much fun doing Jackson Pollock inspired drip art, painting flowers like Georgia O’Keeffe, and learning about Andy Warhol as we made our own silkscreens. These lessons quickly became everyone's favorite part of our homeschool routine! I realized that other kids (and moms!) could benefit from these fun projects, too!

If you know you’d like to explore more art with your kids, but you don't feel confident in your art knowledge, I'd LOVE to take you and your kids on a guided tour through the amazing world of art history.

The Studio is Art History Kids monthly membership program. We study a new topic or theme each month, and you get easy to implement lesson plans delivered to you every Monday.

You don’t need to know anything about art.

You don’t need to have any special art supplies on hand.

And I promise you will LOVE the way we explore art… you’ll have just as much fun as your kids.

The Studio isn't about training kids to draw or paint a certain way.

It’s about exploration.

It isn’t about memorizing a lot of dates and facts.

It’s about getting curious about the art, and seeing where that curiosity takes you.

Right now the membership is open for enrollment, so I wanted to give you a quick peek inside, and show you around a little. Watch this video for a tour of the site…
