An introduction to African American Art History for Kids

We don’t see enough African American art in museums and in text books. Artists like Faith Ringgold have actively worked to bring attention to the need for a more diverse representation of artists in museums, galleries, and education, but there’s still a lot of work to be done.

A recent study found that artists in 18 major museums are 85% white and 87% male.

But we don’t need to rely on what the museums are displaying… we can curate a diverse representation of artists for our kids to explore.

There are so many amazing African American artists we can introduce to our kids, and I have a brand new workshop course that introduces the work of six artists that every child should know.

Together, we’ll dive in and discover more about:

Faith Ringgold

Gordon Parks

Alma Thomas

Jacob Lawrence

Augusta Savage

And Horace Pippin

This workshop consists of pre-recorded kid-friendly video lessons and a pdf guide with extra information and a variety of project idea suggestions for you to choose from.⁣

Your kids will get to know a little more about the artists’ backgrounds, and what inspired them to create their art.

We’ll take a close look at one work of art for each artist, and your kids will be invited to observe the art, and then learn more about the piece.

There are NO live meetups or classes to attend, so you can bring the art into your curriculum when it’s convenient for your schedule.

Your kids will learn about photography, painting, and sculpture, and textile arts... and we’ll see how historical events including The Great Migration, The Harlem Renaissance, and Civil Rights Movement impacted these artists’ work.

Registration is open for the African American Art History Workshop, and I’m so excited to hear your kids’ responses to the work and see the sensational art they’ll create!
