John Kerry

Former Special Presidential Envoy, Climate

John Kerry is the former special presidential envoy for climate in the Biden White House. In this role from 2021 to March 2024, he was the first principal to sit on the National Security Council dedicated entirely to climate change. Previously, he was U.S. secretary of state from 2013 to 2017, where he negotiated the Iran nuclear deal and Paris Climate Agreement. From 1985 to 2013, Kerry was a U.S. senator representing Massachusetts and chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee from 2009 to 2013. He served in the Navy and completed two combat tours in Vietnam, for which he received a Silver Star, a Bronze Star with Combat V and three Purple Hearts. Kerry is the author of “A Call to Service, This Moment on Earth” and “Every Day Is Extra.”
