Don't miss voter deadline, returning officer warns

A returning officer has warned people wanting to vote in the general election they have until midnight on Tuesday to ensure they are registered.

Trevor Holden, managing director for Broadland and South Norfolk Councils, is responsible for overseeing the election in the Broadland and Fakenham, Norwich North and South Norfolk constituencies.

"We've seen a massive upsurge in applications for postal votes and registrations but tonight is the night," he said.

"If you're not registered to vote by midnight tonight, you won't be able to vote in this election."

Anyone not registered at their main address will not receive voting papers and will be turned away from polling stations.

It is illegal for anyone with more than one home to be registered to vote at both properties.

The deadline to opt to vote by post in the 4 July election is midnight on Wednesday.

"If you've any questions or queries at all, please either check with your local authority or go on to the gov.uk website, external and you will be able to register," said Mr Holden.

"It's really easy. You'll need a form of ID with you but we normally see a big uptake and I don't suspect today will be any different."

Anyone voting in person at a polling station is required by law to take a recognised form of photo ID, such as a passport or driving licence.

Polling cards should already have been sent out to anyone registered to vote, with postal voting documents due to be sent out in the next few days.
