Di Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) don assure Nigerians say no cause for alarm as dem say Omicron sub-lineages wey dey partly responsible for di rise in Covid cases and deaths for China, United States and United Kingdom neva enta Nigeria.

Dem yan dis one on Wednesday for one update on Covid-19 genomic surveillance wey di Director General Dr Ifedayo Adetifa sign.

According to di update, di Omicron sub-lineage wey dey responsible for di rise in cases for China na BF.7, while XBB.1.5 na im dey responsible for di rises in cases for US and UK.

Adetifa tok say B.5.2.1 don dey Nigeria since July 2022 and odas fit don dey hia already.

“Di NCDC continue to strengthen genomic surveillance of di COVID-19 virus for Nigeria. Since di detection of di Omicron variant for December 2021, im sub-lineage (BQ.1/BQ.1.1) don dey dominant for Nigeria. None of dis dominant sub-lineages for Nigeria wey dey also circulate elsewia don dey associated with any increases in case numbers, admissions, or deaths locally.

“Di sub-lineages partly responsible for di current increase in COVID-19 cases for oda kontries i.e., XBB.1.5 and BF.7 neva dey detected for di kontri but B.5.2.1 don dey hia since July 2022 and di odas fit don dey hia already. BF.7 and XBB don also dey circulate for South Africa since October 2022 but without any accompanying increase in cases, severe illness, or deaths,” di update tok.

“Di NCDC dey continue to strengthen genomic surveillance of the COVID-19 virus in Nigeria,” di update tok.

According to di NCDC, severe disease, admissions and deaths dey affect di pipo wey neva dey vaccinated and di ones wit established risk factors.

Dem say di most important action for Nigerians to take na to get vaccinated against COVID-19 as di vaccine na di most important intervention to prevent severe disease, hospitalisation and death.

NCDC advise pipo wey dey at risk of severe Covid-19 to continue to stick to di recommended non-pharmaceutical interventions such as di use of face masks, good hand and respiratory hygiene and to avoid crowded spaces.

Dem say dem go continue to pay close attention to di ongoing Covid-19 situation for oda kontris and gada additional surveillance data to inform dia actions.

“We dey review di situation again dis week. At dis next review and if e dey necessary, a range of actions, wey no dey limited to enhanced surveillance of travellers for airports, fit dey decided on and dey implemented,” di update add.
