Manchester City's Japanese defender Risa Shimizu has been ruled out of the remainder of the Olympics with a knee injury.

Shimizu, 28, joined City this summer after her contract with fellow Women's Super League side West Ham expired.

She suffered the knee injury in Japan's opening game at Paris 2024 - a 2-1 defeat by Spain.

A statement from the club said: "Risa will return to the City Football Academy for further assessment by the club’s medical team."

Gareth Taylor's side begin their WSL campaign against Arsenal on 22 September.
